A nice little cafe. Friendly stuff. They serve a good cup of cuppa (cafe Umbria). I was just stopping for some breakfast and got myself a chicken salat sandwich on whole wheat bread. While I found the bread a bit to try the sandwich as a whole was quiet good. The chicken salad seemed house made with a delicious hint of lemon in it. Loved it. Also it comes with Dijon-Mayonnaise and a fresh slice of Tomato. I had a side salat instead of chips but that ended up just being a few greens with a delicious balsamic reduction. All in all a good sandwich I'll take one star away for the bread - but I'll have to give it to them that it is hard to find good bread in the us lol. Also a few leaves of greens are hardly a side salat :) But if would be in this area I would go back in an instand. You can normst outside what was a bit of a pitty but of course nothing that speaks against the cafe it self :) read more

Cute cafe. Really close to where I was staying. About a 5min walk. I couldn't decide between the capini or the rose garden panini. I ordered the rose garden & now I wished I ordered the Capini. The rose garden tasted like a pizza to me. It was ok. I only ate half of it. The tomato basil soup was good. The panini comes with a side salad, soup or chips for $13.99. Stopped on and ordered a Machiano and an Iced coffee over drip. Both were excellent flavor, but the Machiano only came in a small 8oz size, disappointing my friend. The iced coffee was 20 oz and was excellent. So lost a star from my friend, but I loved them. Would recommend and will return for my iced coffee! read more

The paninis were actually pretty good. They had lots of cheese and the bread was toasted nicely--very crispy. We came in at 10:58AM and were able to order off of the breakfast menu. Water stations were self serve, which I appreciated because I drink a lot of water. The cashier bussed our table, which was nice. Overall, not a bad place! read more

I was in Portland for a conference and I have to tell you that J Cafe is a hidden gem. I ended up going three times for lunch while I was there. Having some unique food allergies can make eating out a challenge. I ended up getting a grilled cheese and would add bacon to it on sourdough bread. It was really good. You can tell that the owner really cares about his patrons and puts a lot of effort love into his product. I can see what was packed each day I came to eat. Delicious lunch options near the Oregon Convention Center! I visited twice during my conference and enjoyed having a cafe walking distance. The line was quite long but considering it was one of the only walking distance lunch options, I understood. I wish they stayed open later as I stopped in for a late lunch and to get some work done but they were closing early that day! The indoor seating is limited so avoiding the lunch rush is recommended. read more

We were in Portland for a few days and found this café close to our hotel. The coffee was fabulous, the food was prepared fresh and everything was delicious. Service was awesome. My sister and I were sharing the bagel so they split it for us and served it open face. I loved the Umbria coffee they served. We enjoyed our visit so much we went back the next morning. Hidden gem in a literal 'food desert'. Here for a conference this week and was very disappointed with the lack of open restaurants (or open ANYTHING). I've never been to Portland, and while it appears to be a once-thriving place, it now is post-apocalyptic weird. SO SO SO happy to find J Cafe! Delicious, quick, and made-to-order - unlike the grab-and-go garbage at my, otherwise lovely hotel (Hyatt Regency) with zero open restaurants. THE COFFEE HERE IS DELICIOUS! Great sandwiches, but cramped. Stopped in for lunch with a colleague. This is a very small place and the seating is cramped. With rain gear and thick coats, the tight seating area can get a bit uncomfortable. I had the Caprese panini (mozzarella, pesto, tomatoes). It was deliciously prepared and served with a generous portion of mixed greens and chips. Service was a bit slow for the number of customers (we waited about 15 minutes), but they may have had to-go orders that we didn't see. As we were eating, the server came out to inform the line that they had run out of bread. It wasn't quite 1pm on a Thursday. I'm glad I got my sandwich, but was surprised that they ran out of a key ingredient so early in the day. read more

Close to the convention center and some nearby hotels. Small anecdote that I love: They use compostable straws and have signs discouraging the use of plastic straws. Very Portland! The drinks were just okay though. My friend got a classic espresso in a small white cup and I got a home brewed iced tea. I had high expectations since it was home brewed but it had no flavor. My friend's espresso was fine. They had run out of food when we went there because of a big conference happening that weekend, so we didn't get to try anything. read more

Parking is very difficult. But it's a cute open cafa, minimum seating. It was $30 something or more for two sandwich, soup, and two coffees. The food was definitely worth it. Bagel sandwich was pretty meh. Sesame bagel was barely grilled, and the eggs were so soft and fluffy as to be without texture (microwaved?). Add avocado and cream cheese and it was a bland soggy mess (good luck keeping the egg in place with cream cheese on both sides of the bagel). No perceptible seasoning, but they at least had salt and pepper shakers and Cholula available. P.S. Their menu says they stop serving breakfast at 11, though this information is conveniently absent from their website menu. +1 star for making an egg sandwich at 11:30 without question. read more
