I love J-Gilberts! If you want a great steak, go here. Customer service was fantastic. Very helpful and provided recommendations for sides and what not. I've had the porterhouse and the KC strip, both steaks go for $45+, expensive but well worth every penny. The lobster mac n cheese is a must, even thought it's a $4 up charge. The creamed corn is another must, so so so good. Cocktails are very good too, the only thing that wasn't so great was the Moscow Mule, too tart and watered down. The steak and scallop combo prix fixe was amazing. The food was the product of quality ingredients and a very talented Executive Chef or Sous. Wedge salad was plentiful, cold and crisp. Service was excellent - a home run all around -- Adding to review for the dessert -- Got Frozen Flavors which in my case was three scoops of homemade Sorbet. Had my birthday dinner there. Markie was our server. She was for the most part excellent. My husband had the filet and wedge salad, both of which he enjoyed. I also had the wedge salad along with the barbecue ribs. The ribs were tender and a good portion. My only complaint about the food was that the ribs were not hot. They were barely warm. I had also ordered onion rings which never arrived. I was surprised also that no birthday dessert was offered. I guess that is no longer done? I finally found a decent steakhouse. They serve Prime cuts, not choice (like other restaurants in the area). The steaks and seafood are cooked over a mesquite wood fire. The portions were fair sized. The food was great, as well as the service. I'll be back to try more menu options:) read more

After shopping, we were looking for a place to eat dinner. So of course I looked on yelp for near by places. Due to the great reviews, I suggested J. Gilberts. I'm so glad I did! We didn't have reservations obviously, but they found us a booth in the bar which was fine with us. Our server was great. I had the Caesar salad, hubby had the wedge. We both had steaks, mine was the filet and he had the top sirloin. They were cooked perfectly and had a wonderful grill taste. The sides are unique and delicious. What a great place especially the bartenders at the main bar. I walked in alone sat down immediately had service and a placemat without asking for it and service with a smile! Most impressive aspect is that I walked into a steakhouse and asked for vegetable options and struck up a conversation with half of the employees that set me up with appetizers and a great time. This place is solid. They've got great steaks and seafood, grass fed beef options, rich sides, and from-scratch desserts. The atmosphere is cozy with a large fireplace in the main dining room. The service fits the venue. The ribs are tangy and fall-off-the-bone, with way more than you can eat in one meal. The scallops are also perfect. They come atop a light risotto so another side to go with them is good. The filet is great! All our steaks were great, perfectly seared and melt in your mouth. The potatoes au gratin are probably the best potato on the menu. For cheesy potatoes, they're not as heavy as you'd normally see and they have a lot of flavor. The BF and I stopped by here on Sunday for dinner for the 1st time. I was surprised but the place was pretty empty, which was a plus for us because we got to pick where we sat. I love the ambiance and decor. It's an all purpose occasion restuarant, great for date night, girls night, celebrations, etc. You can either go dressed to the nines or casual. The BF had a beer and I tried the Sparkling Blackberry Martini which was awsome!!!!! For our first visit we stayed on the appetizer menu and indulged in their amazing Happy Hour. They offer Happy Hour Sunday-Friday 4pm-7pm. We ordered: calamari (jalapeños, carrots, sweet n' sour remoulade), sliders (Au poivre sliders- deliciously wonderful, which come with your choice of either sweet potato fries or regular fries), smoked salmon rillette (spread of house-smoked salmon, dill, chive, red onion, capers, egg & mustard with crostini & cornichons) and pretzel crusted onion rings ( which include a trio of dipping sauces: mustardthyme, parmesan garlic and their original steak sauce). Second time coming to J Gilbert's and what an amazing experience, again! Customer service was fantastic. Very attentive, helpful, and provided recommendations. Manager stop by a couple times to make sure everything was going well and it was. Our server was Sarah D., and she was super nice and always accommodating. The steaks here are fantastic. After a week of terrible eating in Springfield this place was a gem on our last night before our flights out of St. Louis. My friend wanted me to mention that the lobster mac and cheese was some of the best she has ever had from here but the dessert, although made in house, did not taste like it and I would have to agree. She had the three ice cream choices and I had a chocolate cake. None of the desserts were particularly amazing. Since I'm starting backwards with dessert, I'll move on to entrees. I had the ribeye. It was huge and cooked perfectly but extremely salty for my tastes. I ended up leaving the majority of it which is a shame since it runs around $50. For appetizers we started off with the house made chips and blue cheese and those babies were the real winners here. They were fantastic. J Gilberts is a solid 4 stars. A regional group of restaurants they do a fine job of not feeling like a corporate chain... because they aren't. Don't let the fact that this restaurants attached to West County mall detour you as the atmosphere is nice,comfortable dimly lit and very inviting. The menu is a bit different than some with either a ala carte menu or a prefix which offers a soup or salad for starters, an entree with various proteins and sides and then desert of your choice. This adds up to be quite a varied and nice meal for the money. Surf n Turf seems to be sort of the focus on many of the combos offered which is fine by me. Steaks and Seafood have proven to be above average here with One of the things they do really well is their Iced Tea! NOTE TO THE MANGER OF J. GILBERT: This Friday past, I was part of a six person party. My meal and the experience of my meal was one of the most disgusting eating experiences I have ever had in my life. The shrimp cocktail contained only five shrimp which where the exact size of Costco's 20-22 count. Currently $19.99. You charge $17. Not much of a cocktail. Served in an enormous silver bowl they were dwarfed by the garnishes. Three of the shrimps were arranged in a shrimp "heart" and the other two looked like they where facing off in shrimp "football." It would have been laughable if it wasn't so sad. My steak came (8ox. Filet) and three sides. I ordered one extra. The lobster mac and cheese was good. The mashed potatoes were scrapped from the bottom. Including little black bits of what tasted like burned saucepan. The creamed corn was crunchy and gorgeous...but I had to endure corn silk in every other bite. The corn preppers were very lazy and obviously don't care about their jobs. For the price of the meal...more care should have been taken. The steak. I cut into the steak of which I ordered medium well and took a bite. I cut up the steak in three pieces and laid them cut side up so the waiter could see. The steak was rare. I was left with the simple fact that J. Gilbert does NOT know how to prepare steaks. A steakhouse that doesn't even know how to grill its namesake item. I told the waiter to take the steak off my bill. Four minutes later the manager came bumbling in, and apologized and said that "we" will correct the steak and he would take the charge off the bill. The plates were cleared. Manager came back and seemed proud of the fact that what he laid before me was indeed cooked. I look down at the four shriveled pieces of beef so unappetizing it looked like it came from the back end of a Cocker Spaniel. Why in the world would a manager do something as moronic as this? I was so insulted. Not a smart move. Not only did he TRY get me to eat the steak...but my steak sauce was cleared from the table. The steak sauce was left ON the bill ($6 for two 1T. plastic prep cups). I paid it because I wanted the nightmare to end. The sauce was a Foyot sauce. A lazy cousin to the classic béarnaise, which was tasteless and watery and cold. The bread, the dessert and the service was good I went home and tired to find a way to send my observations to corporate or even the manager via FB. J. Gilbert seems to go out of their way as to NOT receive feedback. I later learned they are owned by Houlhan's (the smallest step up from Appleby's) but at twice the cost. The problem is when you charge twice as much you need to deliver that much more. And you didn't. Not even close. Ponderosa knew when it was done and closed its doors. Now it's your turn. BEWARE of the take out service!!! I LOVE the food at J Gilbert's and in dining service is OUTSTANDING, however, sadly I will NEVER return. We tried to order a very special dinner to celebrate my son's 25th birthday. I only get to see him a couple times a year now that he lives out of town. Because my husband is high risk and COVID is raging in this city, we ordered carry out. When we got the food home, 1/2 of my son's dinner- the fillet & scallops was missing. I was so incredibly frustrated- we were trying to make this a special night for him. I immediately called the restaurant, and although they were very apologetic, and promised to refund the meal, they did NOT..I checked my credit card statement and the full charge is there with NO credit back for the missing dinner. Mrs K and I wanted to celebrate our 36th anniversary so I picked J. Gilbert's. I know it is somehow connected or related to Bristol's. I was comfortable enough with Bristol's to know I would like this place and I did. For starters I ordered oysters on the half shell and they were very sweet and delicious. The cocktail sauce was the same as Bristol's. Tangy with horseradish that you would stir into the sauce. I then proceeded to order their bone in rib eye with Brussels sprouts and baked potato. The steak was cooked to order and the sprouts and potato were first class. Mrs K. ordered the fillet with green beans and baked potato and hers was slightly undercooked from her preference for medium well. But it did turn to medium well after being on the plate for a few minutes. The service was attentive and the server was very informative on all of our choices. He really did a great job. What a great happy hour... First of all their happy hour lasts until 7pm. While the discounts are not as significant as some other places, you are getting some pretty quality food for reduced prices. We tried the sliders, calamari, shrimp, and lobster claws. Everythign was good... the sliders were the best. I'm not much of steak eater, so to be honest I can't tell you what a good steak tastes like. Guilty! Came here on New Years Day because it was the only place that was open and I've also never tried it. I played it safe and made reservations but after walking through the front door, I saw that reservations probably wasn't needed due to the almost empty restaurant. Did I mention it was at West County Mall? What the heck! I was almost kind of embarrassed but okay, I'll give it a try. For appetizers I tried the Charcuterie & Cheese board which came with an assortment of meat and cheese. I'm a cheese head, of course I liked it. Also if you check in on Yelp! you get Maytag Potato Chips for free with any entree. They were OK if I were lounging in front of a TV. For my main entree I tried one of their specials of the day which was the Surf and Turf that came with a 6oz (I asked for a 4oz) filet mignon, lobster tail, and choice of two sides. I chose their Yukon mashed potatoes and sauteed spinach. I know, I'm SO original. Steak was cooked the way I liked it and was nicely seasoned. Mashed potatoes were a bit dry and the spinach was watery? After the appetizers, I can say I didn't finish my whole meal and left with a box to go home. I went there to eat dinner. The first time my friend and I visited I enjoyed it. When I went by myself it was the total opposite! As I entered the restaurant I was not greeted by the hostess. I was thinking to myself," maybe she has cataracts and cannot see me." Other people came in and she "came to herself " to greet all of us. She then asked "who's first?" All of us laughed at her. People who were seated after me ordered before me. The table I was sitting at wasn't thoroughly clean. I pulled out my Clorox wipes. I ordered and when my food arrived it was lukewarm, no heat. I sent the food back to be heated. When the food arrived I was asked "what else did I want ?" I thought woooooooow! Did I upset them by coming here to eat. I was not going to give them the satisfaction of me asking them to pack up my food. It really upset my stomach so I did not enjoy the food. So, I really don't know what to make of this restaurant. Normally, it would take something akin to a plague to get me to make the trek to a county chain restaurant attached to a mall for a bite to eat. So, I'll man up and just say it - I really like J Gilberts. I'll start with two pluses. The ambiance is pretty cool. Very dark and classy enough without being too formal. The fire wall is my favorite amenity. Adding to the ambiance is the service. I have always had outstanding, attentive service in both the bar and restaurant. It's always a plus when your server can discuss suggestions with you and give you informative feedback. I have been to J Gilberts twice so far - once for dinner and once for happy hour. DINNER: It is true what other reviewers say. J Gilberts offers excellent value for the price. This is because, with many entrées, you get to choose two sides at no additional cost. They have about 10 sides to choose from, making it easy to get a potato and veggie for a well-rounded meal. I tried the 6 oz filet mignon, medium, with pablano au gratin potatoes and grilled asparagus. Everything was done to perfection. At $29 for all of that, it was a steal. We happened to be dining on a Sunday evening and also benefited from their Sunday wine special, where all bottles under $100 are 1/2 price. Dinner was a wonderful experience. HAPPY HOUR: Happy hour, although not cheap in general, is a good deal to try discounted J Gilberts items and does last 4-7 pm Mon-Fri. They offer a variety of appetizers, many of which are seafood (which I don't care for). My favorite was the filet sliders. Two tenderloin sliders with watercress, shallot jam, and blue cheese, accompanied by house-made chips. At $7 (down from $9.50), you can easily make a meal out of these. The shining star of happy hour was their cocktails, though. They have some very unique and intriguing mixed drinks to try, so I skipped wine, and tried a few at the $6 happy hour price. My ultimate favorite was the lemon, basil manhattan. Tart, smooth and delicious - especially on a hot summer day. I also tried the French 75, which was served in an adorable champagne glass and certainly packed a punch. Parking can be a bitch but, all in all, I'd recommend that you give J Gilberts a try. My BF and I are both veterans of 2 other of J. Gilbert's sister restaurants so we decided to go investigate the new establishment before Christmas shopping. We sat at the bar and were warmly greeted bar the female bartender. She made me one perfect dirty martini and made the boy a special barrel whiskey old fashion (or was it a Manhattan? I can never remember the difference!). Anyway, his drink knocked my freaking socks off. It was amaze-balls. So the female bartender walks off and next thing you know, this male bartender is taking our order. That's cool, but he's not writing anything down and he doesn't bother to repeat our order... so I am already guessing that he's not gonna remember everything. We ordered a plethora of appetizers: sliders, mussels, sushi grade tuna tartare, oysters on the half shell, a couple of lobster claws, and shrimp diablo. Everything was on happy hour but it was evident that we were going to be drinking and noshing. Heavily. After we are well on our way to the bottom of our glasses (second drinks, that is), the food begins to come out of the kitchen. But, wait, not all at once. It's staggered out. Are we at a tapas bar? Were we forgotten? After a few minutes we have come to the conclusion that we are missing 1 lobster claw. We tell the male bartender and he disputes with my boyfriend, arguing that we only ordered one! Wow. Then I ask him which sliders he has brought us, when he responds, I correct him politely, stating that was not what we ordered. He walks over to the computer screen and begins investigation but never follows up with any reasoning as to why the wrong sliders were brought out. We also point out that we wanted sweet potato fries, not the regulars, and he blatantly flakes out on everything!!! As we finished all of our food, I realize that we never got our shrimp diablo and mention this to my BF who is no longer concerned as we both are nicely intoxicated and full of seafood. We both order desert and champagne. Then the shrimp comes out. I say something to the bartender because at this point I AM HEATED UP. We are full. Why is this coming out now, 15 minutes after we finish eating? I was staggering your meal. How is it staggering if 5 out of 6 plates come out at once? Seriously? I could not believe this kid! Great food and fun for our work Christmas party When the team had our Christmas party at J. Gilbert's last year (2015), they had so much fun that they talked about it all through the year. So when it was time for our work team to pick a location for a Christmas party this year (2016), it was no surprise that we picked J. Gilbert's. We selected the bar area, which offered both seating, tall tables for standing and eating, and plenty of space to move around. It was house salad, Duroc pork chop, augrauten potatoes, a cream corn and squash vegetable medley with chocolate cake for dessert I had my standard bone in ribeye and it was perfect. perfectly cooked, outstanding flavor and a texture like butter. I also had the augrauten potatoes with braised spinnach. I opted for the creme Brule as my free birthday dessert. This was a perfect meal. There's not much bad to say about J Gilberts. They have a very nice free wine tasting on Wed evenings and offer a $15 off coupon for signing up for their email club. Food: The price is pretty decent for a nice surf and turf. A 4oz filet and ~5oz salmon with 2 sides was only $32. They serve a very good warm sourdough bread with 2 different butters. The filet had excellent flavor and seasoning and 1 of the 2 medium-rare we ordered was cooked perfect. The other came out more med-well but still was moist with nice flavor. The salmon had a good lemon-pepper seasoning and was crispy on top. It was very moist and flaky and melted in your mouth. The green beans with pecans was awesome as well. It was slightly sweet because of the sweet onions and savory with the olive oil. The slightly disappointing items were the Poblano au gratin potatoes and lobster mac and cheese. Although both were good, they didn't have the wow factor as the other items on the plate. The potatoes were a bit too greasy for me and flavors were amateur. The mac and cheese was ok too, but not as good as other restaurants in the area. There wasn't as much cheese as we like and the lobster flavor was lost in the dish. If it wasn't up-charged $3.50, it might have been a decent value. We didn't order any salads since the waitress said they weren't large portions and the price didn't seem right. The soup was a bit overpriced too. With that said, their prix-fixe menu could be a good value since it includes dessert and one of these overpriced starters. I signed up for the email club since our visit and received my $15 off, so we will be coming back for sure on another Wednesday to take advantage of the free wine and great food. read more

Foodie here ‍ this is our go-to for a nice dinner date. Of all the local places, this is the best bang for your buck. We started our experience with the espresso martini, as you drink this martini topped with cream, a wonderfully balanced combination of sweet froth to espresso ratio is created as you sip through the martini. We also enjoyed wonderful whiskey cocktails garnished with candied bacon and luxardo cherries with a touch of sea salt to really elevate the flavor. For our first course I had the lobster bisque, upon bringing to the table our attentive and knowledgeable server poured the bisque over a bowl of freshly steamed lobster, the flavor was robust and creamy. Perfectly paired with their house salad, the appetizers didn't serve justice for the main course. It is hard to cook scallops right but J Gilbert's turned my scallops into pillowy smooth bursts of flavor. He got the porter house, nothing less than delicious, the wood fire facilitated a depth of flavor for the beef. We went on 1/8/21, the first Friday of reopening.
