So, I had dinner at a place that I didn't even know existed until last night - J. Gilbert's @ West County! To say it was an unbelievably wonderful experience would not do this establishment justice! Immediately upon walking in, we were greeted warmly in an absolutely beautiful environment - honestly, one of the prettiest restaurants I've been in, and I grew up in the business. Our server, Joey, was the epitome of professionalism and yet very personable as well, so we had an enjoyable time just due to that. The food itself was off the charts, although a little pricey, I do understand why. Everything was absolutely cooked to perfection! I am not overstepping when I say this was absolutely and by far the best ribeye I've EVER had, and I mean EVER! I even encountered the manager briefly and he was a true gentleman, although I wish I caught his name, as he went out of his way for us as well. This is dining as it used to be...no rush, whatever you need, however you need it, what can I do for you - this was our entire experience and it was just superb. Truly it was. I also appreciated J Gilbert's card of acknowledgment and complimentary birthday dessert option. I started with the Lump Crab Cakes. These were 2 large cakes served with a rémoulade and another house dipping sauce. The crab was superb and not overpowered by the breadcrumbs that can sometimes dominate crab cakes. They were so filling I split the cakes with my dining partner and was still satisfied. Next, I ordered a small dish of George Bank Scallops with grilled asparagus. Solid steakhouse! Intriguing preparation of the steak whereby it's barbecued to bring to temp and finished on high flame. Makes for a nice smoky flavor and there is a crust of some type that is sweet and salty. I had the ribeye and it was a perfect medium, medium rare. I had the accompaniments of mushrooms which were satisfying, though not spectacular. Also had the mashers, which were good. Started with lobster bisque, flavorful and they pour it in front of you. The chips with cheese sauce was comforting, which left our party wanting more sauce. The Oysters Rockefeller were on point. No liquor for me, but glad they had some ice cold Heineken 0's. The dessert was forgettable, cake that was dry and incommensurate with the rest of the meal. Service was pleasant, supportive and attentive. Bartender took our family picture on the way out and was sweet about it, even in the midst of closing up shop. The person that checked us in was friendly but the tall young lady who sat us down was kinda snooty... to the point it was the first time I felt unwelcomed at a restaurant. I thought to myself maybe it's because she's really young and she doesn't know how to be professional. Being from Chicago and having tried beef in Argentina, I feel like I have high standard when it comes to steaks. After asking our waiter, he informed us that the beef were not grass fed except for the special Kansas strip they had that night. 1) my bone in rib eye was very fatty, big and good but more on the rare side for medium rare. This Thanksgiving I was thankful for J Gilbert's. I was thankful that I was able to get a reservation at the last minute at the time I wanted. Most importantly, I was thankful for an amazing Prix Fixe Thanksgiving Menu, that satisfied me need for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. I liked that J Gilbert's did a Prix Fixe menu instead of a buffet like so many other restaurants that were open on Turkey Day. Buffets usually are overpriced and overwhelming. Where do you start? What should you eat? and the hardest question of them all, "When do I stop eating?" Our dinner was reasonably priced at $38 and included three courses. The first course was a choice of two types of salad and two soups. I choose a Caesar Salad and my friend Norma went with the Maryland Crab Bisque. The size of my salad was appropriate for a lead in to a large meal. I enjoyed the dressing, which was proportionate to the amount of Romaine lettuce. The asiago cheese crisp was the perfect carb match up to the salad. The second course was the main attraction; a Traditional Thanksgiving spread. When the plate was first placed in front of me, I thought it was skimpy servings. As I started to eat, I immediately realized I was wrong. I needed a to-go vessel, that provided me a nice lunch for the next day at work. The traditional spread included; roasted turkey (both dark & white meat), yukon mashed potatoes, cornbread and sausage dressing, gravy, glazed yams, green beans with pecans and cranberry orange relish. I had everything that I wanted and if I closed my eyes, I would have thought I was down home on the farm instead of an upscale steak & seafood house. The third course of course was dessert. You got to select from three of their most popular desserts and of course pumpkin pie. Miss Norma went pumpkin pie, but I had to stray off menu. I saw a Vanilla Bean Creme Brûlée pass by our table and instantly knew I had to have it. When I asked our server if I could substitute she was accommodating to my request. It was so delicious with the fresh raspberries on top. Actually, the serving portion is so huge that two diners could share. Let me back-up to the beginning of our evening and tell you about our appetizer and cocktail. One of my favorite cocktails is the Moscow Mule, so I was thrilled when I saw J Gilbert's made theirs with my favorite vodka; Tito's and my favorite ginger beer; Fever Tree. Most MM's are $8, but to have my two favorites in my favorite cocktail was worth the $10. Plus, they poured heavy, it was a good strong cocktail. Being a fan of crab meat, I couldn't resist ordering the Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes. Excellent! You are served two huge cakes and if you order this item for lunch, for me it would be the complete meal. They also served up a small loaf of piping hot house bread with two types of butter. The service was; friendly, attentive and not rushed. A couple of friends have told me J Gilbert's does a great job on lamb chops and scallops. So I know I will be back, as those two entrees are on the menu of my last meal on earth. This is where I always schedule my business lunches. It's very nice, somewhat quiet and never over crowded for lunch. Our waiter took our drink orders immediately after we sat down. We received our drinks and a plate of warm bread. Not good for a low carb diet, but so delicious. I seem to always get the salmon roulette (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) which is a ground salmon with capers that you use for a spread. Small dill pickles and sweet purple pickled onions. We had a great experience here! Went for our 3 year anniversary and we're looking for a nice way to celebrate. We each did the 3-course meal option- I got the wedge salad, 4 oz filet combo with scallops, and the coconut cake. The salad was one of the best salads I've had in a long time, the bacon, blue cheese crumbles, and dressing were great! The filet was seasoned well, however mine was a little over cooked, but still tasted good. The scallops were wonderful! By the time the coconut cake came out I was so full I could only have a few bites, but the frosting and crunchy topping on the cake were the best parts! Simply fantastic! This is my first time visiting J Gilberts in Des Peres Mo, but I have been to J Gilberts in Overland Park Ks a handful of times now. Both locations are fabulous, however there are some slight differences between them. As I've come to expect from J Gilberts, the ambience here as well as the staff were amazing. I personally love the sense of intimacy you get at upscale places like these. The restaurant could be at full occupancy yet you feel like it's just you and your date and the waiting staff treats you like you are there only table. I have received this type of treatment from many upscale restaurants but J Gilberts seemingly sets the bar. Outstanding job guys and gals! On to the food... For an appetizer we ordered the blue cheese potato chips. I must say this is a favorite of mine. The chips were perfectly crispy, and the sauce was as tangy and sharp as it was ample. In my review of the Kansas location I mentioned that they were a little light on the sauce, not so at despres. The cheese sauce was just the perfect amount to weave its way through the pile of chips, coating the majority of them with no pool of waste at the bottom of the plate. I realize that by volume it's almost certainly the same at both locations but for some reason (maybe as simple as the way it was poured) despres just did something better. First course was the Maryland crab bisque. This is by far my favorite bisque of any restaurant ever. The bowl I was served last night conjured up memories from my first Crab bisque experience at Overland Park. I specifically say first because there have been slight differences between each visit. I understand this may be because each batch is made from scratch which is something I could hardly complain about, but if I'm being honest my last bowl at OP was a little on the salty side. Des Peres however, was perfect! (Plus it had more crab too...) Moving on to the entrées... I ordered the Fillet and salmon combo with mushroom risotto and lobster mac & cheese. My wife ordered the fillet and scallops combo with Yukon Gold potatoes and asparagus. Both dishes were absolutely perfect! Steaks were cooked to the EXACT temperature we ordered, the scallops were fresh and sweet, and the salmon was as buttery soft as it was smoky in flavor. The sides were just as epic. Yukon Gold mashed potatoes were heavenly, and the lobster mac & cheese was loaded with lobster but if I'm being 100% honest the mushroom risotto was slightly lacking in flavor. Don't get me wrong I devoured every last piece of mushroom and grain of rice, but folding in just a tiny bit of (or simply more) Parmigiano-Reggiano, would have made it perfect. Honestly it was one of the, if not THE BEST dinner we have ever had out together. Finally dessert... Unfortunately we were so stuffed that by the time it came to choose dessert we just had them box them up to go. I chose the chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and my wife chose the cheesecake. By the time we got home our stomachs had settled enough that we devoured the sweet desserts. Just like everything else at J Gilberts, the desserts (even 45 minutes later) were fantastic as well. Let's start with rude denial of our dinner reservation...my companion had to display his iPhone screen before we were seated. From the get-go service to our table was at best perfunctory and condescending. Our waiter spent 90% of his time schmoozing tables near us and practically throwing our orders onto our table and returning to schmoozland. The food: Oysters Rockefeller...oysters the size of a Lima bean; a minimal amount of a white sauce with a few dots of Spinach.Very disappointing. Crab Bisque: a large shallow bowl with approximately 1 large teaspoon of crabmeat landed on the table...a busboy then poured what would be less than a cup of Bisque in any other restaurant over the crabmeat and then disappeared. My companion asked for a bit of sherry since it was missing from the bisque. He was brought 1/2 a shot glass of sherry for which we were charged $10.00 on our bill. Two positive notes: my steak was tender and perfectly prepared and coconut cake was a delicious desert. Our final tab was $236.00 for two with no bar tab except $10.00 for 1/2 shot of sherry!! They have coat check, so we were able to sit comfortably at our booth. Our waiter (I hate that I can't remember his name) was very nice and knowledgeable. The menu had so many options to choose from. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants, not only for personal dinners, but also entertaining customers. I rented the banquet room and had 12 customers. I told them 24 hours in advance of the head count. The day of my event, the waitress told me she won't overwhelm the kitchen staff w all the orders at once. It was a disaster. Some got their entrees immediately. Others 30 min later. And I had FOUR guests who sat for an hour with no entree during the entire event and it was served while everyone was leaving. They took it to go. Instead of spending time w my guests, I was constantly tracking down my waitress and the kitchen staff, and/or Trip, to try to show my guests respect and that their meals were never served. Trip, the GM, kept telling me the entrees were coming, but they were not. The waitress was probably stretched too far, as she was also tending bar tables. The service was horrible, as they brought entrees "here and there". I paid extra for the private room and told them 24 hours in advance of my group size. I was still charged 18% gratuity. Four of my 12 guests sat for over an hour watching everyone else eat, and I could not conduct my business discussions because I was chasing down staff, who kept telling me the food will be right out, but never arrived. Trip & Staff tried to minimize my concerns and said they ordered their food to go. They did not. One did, but not the four who never received dinner. I was constantly out of the room tracking down missing dinners and was dismissed by Trip, the waitress and all service staff as "it's coming". But it was not. This a dramatic drop in quality of service, and especially disappointed with Trip, who excused all these problems as minimal. He even touted the waitress as "top notch". I am sad to say entertaining guests here is not like it used to be. They cannot handle a business meeting group of 12 without "overwhelming the kitchen staff", even w 24 hours notice on a WEEKDAY! So sad. This used to be a favorite for a decade. No more. The service was inexcusable. Only reason I gave any stars is because the food that was served was good, but that was lost by all the other problem. It got busier as the night progressed. So reservations would be preferred. I ordered ribs with a side of fries and Brussel Sprouts. It's was all right, not the best I ever had. Things have gone further downhill at J Gilbert's. It's no longer our favorite place and I doubt we'll eat there again. We ate there last night to celebrate our anniversary. The service was sloppy and the food was meh. First the food. We ordered the onion ring and the artichoke dip appetizers. The rings were good but the dip was strange and a bit chalky. We had the chicken tortilla soup - which was one of our favorites, the broth was bland, the soup was missing lime and had too much cheese and onions. I had the kc strip, Yukon potato's, and lobster mac&cheese. The steak was okay, the mac&cheese was tasty but the mashed potatoes had a heavy film coating- I didn't eat them. My wife's filet was okay, but she didn't like her shrimp or her potatoes. The desserts were good. The service was really poor, our waitress was okay, but everyone else was way off. First our drinks were delivered to the wrong table, I flagged the server down when I saw her walking away from the wrong table with our drinks. Second, they served our soup before our apps. Before we'd finished the soup they brought our entrees. I told the server we hadn't gotten our apps yet and she took away our entrees and a few minutes later we got our apps. When we finally got our entrees it was obvious they had been kept warm, which congealed the potatoes. After this experience, we'll celebrate our next special occasion some where else. read more
