I decided to try this steakhouse for my birthday as it was a promoted post on my instagram. I was disappointed for sure. I ordered an "off the menu" steak which was a 14 oz Bone In Strip, green beans and au gratin potatoes. The green beans had pecans but no glaze to bring the flavor of that and the green beans together, the potatoes were burned on the edge so i'm assuming my piece came from the edge of a pre made pan, the steak was not tender which is weird since I requested medium. The seasoning on the steak wasn't all that either. My husband ordered the Blackened Chicken Penne which was flavorful but he immediately had bubble guts. He didn't finish the meal. My free dessert choice was the "seven layer" coconut cake which is really 4 layers of cake so I guess the 3 other layers was the filling in between. Smh. .I appreciate our server, Scott, for being knowledgeable and pleasant, the service of the food was timely & the ambiance is perfect for a romantic night! I really wanted to like this place and give it excellent reviews however it just didn't meet expectations. The service and ambiance were amazing. Drinks and food timely. It was our wedding anniversary (and apparently everyone else in the restaurant ) and we wanted something special and we like steaks. I've been trying all the steakhouses we can and this was on our list. However due to the food we will not be back. We get a calamari appetizer which was delicious. Iceberg salad meh ok but I was hoping it would be a thick ranch and it was pretty runny. Just my preference but not bad. Then on to the steaks. My favorite cut is the ribeye which was only offered in the 18 oz, really wish there was a smaller cut. I got the asparagus and Yukon mashed potatoes. Nothing on the plate tasted good. The steak was cooked under, I asked for medium and the steak was almost rare with the center not even hot. No seasoning or flavor. Maybe people get the offered butters for extra but we usually just enjoy the steak. I ate some of my steak before I realized how under it was so I didn't bother sending it back figuring I would just heat it up at home since there was no way I was eating all that. The mashed potato were very waxy like that had been over beaten. The asparagus had no seasoning not even salt but tasted like someone had poured liquid smoke on it. It was not good. Desert was yummy but not the best I've ever had. My husband got the porterhouse special at a whopping $95. It was similar to mine with a lack of flavor. The first one they brought out was cooked to a medium and he asked for rare. The server did have it quickly remade. The manager even came over and apologized. Very rare on the next steak but it worked ok. He also got the poblano cheese potatoes and green beans. The gb were meh but the potatoes were freaking delicious. He then had the Apple crostata and again it was ok but didn't rank in our memorable dessert's. Overall we walked away disappointed, especially with the money we spent. Compared to similar priced options like twisted tree etc the food was subpar. However they seemed very busy and most people looked like they were enjoying their food. We did have a lovely time in our booth talking and enjoying our wine. Maybe the flavor of everything was just below our expectations and so we were overly bummed out but if you like bland steaks with butters on them then maybe this is your place. My husband, son, granddaughter and I celebrate most holidays at J. Gilbert's. It's our favorite place to eat steak--filet, prime rib, cowboy cut and strip. They're all delicious, but so are the salads, vegetables and desserts. Our favorite desserts are the Creme Brulé and berries with cream. Even when every table is full at J. Gilbert's the restaurant isn't noisy and it doesn't feel crowded. For over a year when we have made a reservation we ask for Katie to be our server. She makes all of our special occasions even more special. She remembers what we drink and even how we like our steaks cooked. I love that she is as friendly to our 10-year-old granddaughter as she is to the adults. We all look forward to seeing her. We'll be going back soon! read more

Great food and portions!! I got the prix fixe meal opting for the crab bisque, maple plank salmon, and coconut cake with pineapple ice cream. I was extremely pleased with EVERYTHING except for the coconut cake which was dry and dense in my opinion with little cream cheese icing (not like what I'm used to in the south). The side of potato asparagus hash that came with the salmon was average (I was expecting something more creative and flavorful). My friend got the creamed corn and poblano au gratin potatoes which were both amazing and paired with the roasted chicken. They serve sourdough bread and butter for the table which was nice. The cocktail menu looked very appealing, but I chose not to indulge on this visit. I highly recommend the restaurant and will certainly return the next time that I am in the area. read more

My husband and I celebrated our 10th anniversary here. It was great for us. Our server, Monica, was very patient and extremely helpful. We enjoyed a couple of cocktails to start. The sourdough bread was nice and warm. Monica said the next round of fresh bread would be better and she was right. We enjoyed the small seafood tray as an appetizer. We ordered the 8,oz filet with mushroom risotto and asparagus and the lamb with risotto and spinach. Both entrees were cooked to our liking. We also enjoyed a bottle of riesling with our food. The wait was quite long considering the place was not crowded. I ordered the scallops - for $46 dollars I received small scallops - not the usual large sea scallops -- the pork belly on them was tough and over cooked. My daughter ordered a filet and lobster. She received the filet which was cooked great as for the lobster tail it arrived after we were all done with our meals. And for $56 dollars was not worth it . No explanation for the timing no manager came to talk to us regarding this. The other meals were average. We are from the Chicago area and have many good restaurants that have much better service and good food the cost. Would definitely not return. read more

The interior design is upscale, and the lighting is subdued and intimate. I'm pescatarian, so I can only speak for their seafood which I found to be delicately prepared, flavorful, and not salty. The wait staff and servers are professional, and the various courses come out of the kitchen within reasonable time frames. I've never ordered an appetizer and then wished I hadn't because my entree came out too soon. Don't be fooled by a steakhouse in a mall! J Gilbert's is the go to for a great meal and a great happy hour. We prefer sitting at the bar where Daniel and the team are always welcoming guests with a smile and a good word. The appetizers from the oysters to the shrimp to the calamari are excellent. You cannot go wrong with the wedge salad generously served with bleu cheese or the Caesar salad. The wood fired filet is her go to and I prefer the sirloin. If you can't decide I can recommend the combo paired with some salmon. Make sure you get the pablano au gratin potatoes. The Prix Fix menu is great if you are hungry as well. A good selection of wines priced reasonably on happy hour and then 1/2 off bottles on Sundays are a great deal. I recommend highly! read more

The food, the cocktails, the atmosphere, the service! Thumbs up all around. My family and I came to STL for a wedding, and the night prior happened to be my mom's birthday. In search of the perfect restaurant near by to celebrate, J Gilbert's came highly recommended! We were told to put in reservations, so that we did. We booked for patio seating at 8pm but a few of us figured we'd make our way there early to grab cocktails at the bar and wait on the rest of our party. We soon realized it was happy hour (on a Friday!? #bonus), which meant half-off beers, discounted wines and signature drinks. I was feeling extra so I ordered the Sparkling Blackberry Martini. It was a delicious blend of vodka, Chambord, fresh-squeezed lemon juice, and Prosecco. I also sipped on my mom's Bourbon Basil Smash, which was truly delightful. Once everyone else arrived, we were seated on the patio. Due to how busy it was, and to covid, their patio is split into two sections. I was kind of bummed our table was across the courtyard and away from the restaurant's atmosphere, but oh well. Out came baked bread accompanied by fancy butter options to enjoy while we perused the menu. Quick disclaimer: you WILL be spending quite a bit on dinner here, like upwards of $40-50 per plate, but you will get quality in what you pay for. The Maple Plank Roasted Salmon was divine. Perfectly cooked and flavored with bourbon glaze, and the slightest bit of crisp on the top. It came with herb roasted potato and asparagus hash - a great pairing if you ask me. I came here for a group dinner in one of the private rooms at J Gilbert last week. My favorites were the blue cheese potato chips and the bourbon maple shrimp appetizers. The crab bisque had a good amount of crab meat, was creamy and flavorful but not too heavy. For my main course I ordered the 12 oz Kansas City strip which was served with grilled asparagus and Yukon mashed potatoes. My steak was cooked just right, but it had a smoky flavor on the outside that made it a little too dry for me. After I went home with my leftover steak, my husband fried it again with butter and said it tasted much better. The cheesecake was delicious, although the berries and cream and creme brulee that my friends ordered also looked like really good options. My husband had weight loss surgery, so his capacity is rather small. He presented a card to the server, indicating that due to his diminished capacity, he requested to order from the kids menu. We've been going to J Gilbert's for years and enjoy it! One of my daughters chooses it for her birthday dinner every year and we go other times as well. We've been there in groups of two to eight people. The place always looks very clean and is decorated in an understated manner. We're always greeted warmly and seated right away. Our server always come for front orders within a few minutes of being seated. I'm not sure we've ever had a bad server there. This past weekend, we had Chris and he was great! We feel a server can make a good meal even better. He had a great personality and meshes well with the six of us. The cocktails are yummy! I usually have trouble deciding which I want. They bring out some good bread with regular and flavored butter. We had a few appetizers for the table. All of our food was pretty good. I could have given them four stars after this visit, but almost every other time it was a five so I went with that. My husband got the Chilean sea bass and it was over cooked. I had the appetizer crab cakes as my entree and one of them was way too salty and I couldn't eat it. This is an unusual occurrence.
