I enjoyed the food at J Gilbert's. The filet mignon with truffle butter was cooked perfectly and the mashed potatoes were nicely done. The wedge salad was typical. The creamed corn was nothing special and the bread they brought us was unremarkable as well. While the food was above average, the service was lacking. Both orders in our party were messed up. My friend pointed out he'd gotten the wrong sides and they never did bring the correct sides. I've dined here a few times and happy hour is always my favorite but this place is a hit or miss. It's either they get it really good or bad, inconsistent is a good word! This Wednesday we came for happy hour and our server, only girl server in the bar area was not receptive. I mean she did her minimum lucky both my hubby and I were in a generous mood coz one of the other server (a guy) was nice and I think they work as a team. He was attentive at least... As for the food- has great potential- we had shrimp durango twice but second order definitely lacking, first was superb; thus, the inconsistencies! Sliders were good but our calamari looked malnourished compared to the next table, it was half empty and noticeably smaller, in comparison. The cab sav 6 oz looks more like 4 oz, the Hemingway lacked alcohol, another drink was good, again, with the inconsistencies!!! Anyway, it's a hit or miss for sure! I really don't want to say anything more bad or good so a 3 is appropriate. we went to the recent wine dinner. the food was mostly terrible. the wine were delicious. the melon soup was good , the scallop with a sweet potato purée was tasty buy served lukewarm at beast on cold plates. the duck pate was good. the corn and ricotta ravioli was terrible the pasta was tough and again served chilly. cold plates. the dessert was the only stand out rather tasty. we will not be doing this again!!! the previous dinners we have tasted were remarkably good. this dinner lives up to our opinion of gilbert's. not good . service was slow took a long time between. courses. for the money we should have been impressed. read more

I had posted a review a while back. A very favorable review, but I mentioned that they did not have creamed spinach on the menu. And that is a staple of steakhouses. The manager got back to me and said the next time you come in, as you check in, just ask the host or hostess about getting creamed spinach. Well, last night I did. And the manager came over to our table and then spoke to the chef and we had delicious creamed spinach! Now that's Service! The rest of the meal and the service Was also exemplary. Two reviews for the McLean, Virginia location Brunch: With covid, j Gilbert's had to switch from the buffet option to a la carte. Options are fabulous and quite filling. A nice variety of sweet and savory. I always order chicken and waffles (I can never decide if I want sweet or salty for brunch!) and let me tell you, the chicken was sooo good. A bit more "tender" like but it paired with the sweet syrup and there were also a few pieces of andouille sausage The shrimp and grits. Wow. The grits were perfect consistency. Not too salty and definitely not too sweet. The salmon Benedict and carrot cake waffles are a great option for a more standard brunch item. Dinner: I ordered the date night deal during the promotion. The crab cakes and sour dough bread were great starters. The crab cakes had huge pieces of crab, no filler. For entrees we ordered the KC stir and scallops and lobster risotto. Takeaway is hard, but j Gilbert's did an awesome job! The scallops were perfectly seared and the KC strip was exactly how I ordered it! Nice and pink. My family is a regular at J. Gilberts and we've been coming here for years. However, our meal on 6/2/24 was an awful experience and not what we've been accustomed to. We had 7:15 reservations, but arrived a bit early and were seated at 7:10PM. The restaurant was not crowded. Our waiter Brandon, came by right away, and took our order by around 7:20. The drinks came out along with 1 appetizer right away. My wife and I ordered steaks and my son ordered scallops. We sat there forever waiting for the main course to come out. We asked Brandon what was going on and he said "Your order is next up". We continued to wait until past 8PM. No food. Finally I went to get another waiter and ask what was going on. She got our waiter who went to get a manager. The manager came by and said she "had no excuse" and could not explain what the problem was. Nothing. I told her the restaurant was not crowded and I did not understand what was taking so long. She agreed, but offered no reasons, no excuses, nothing. An hour after our order went in, our meal was served. Steaks were lukewarm as was the mushroom risotto. We finished our meal quickly, and the manager asked if she could make it up by offering a complimentary desert. Instead, we said we're ready to leave. She apparently was not sensitive to the fact that this had been a terrible experience and no, we didn't want a "complementary" desert. We were offered a 20% discount - thanks to our waiter Brandon who was great. Did we receive a follow up from the manager? Nope. My takeaway is this: Until the manager of J. Gilberts gets this fixed, don't plan to go here on a Sunday night. read more

Came to utilize my birthday coupon that they send for email subscribers. Haven't been here in a while and noticed they offer prix fixe meals now. For $61, I got a wedge salad, 8oz center cut filet with mashed potatoes and broccolini, and coconut cake. I thought it was a pretty good deal! The wedge salad was huge and great. I rarely get filets since I love a good ribeye, but this was exceptional. Very tender, moist, and cooked perfectly. I was able to share the 14oz Durac pork chop and it was great too. The cake was awesome, its a huge slice with some mango(?) sauce drizzled underneath. Service was quick and efficient and made for a great meal. read more

Came here with the co-workers and I've been a hand-full of times as well. Fun fact! Both my cousins got married here! One had an actual wedding and the other once has a reception here. This place has consistently delivered above and beyond quality of food and the service. The reason for the 4 stars and not the 5 is because of the missing orders we had. I have been dying to get to this restaurant for years. Finally made it to celebrate my dear friend's birthday dinner - do-over. Definitely make a reservation to ensure you have nice table to enjoy some amazing service and food! For starters, we ordered the Shrimp Durango, which was devoured within seconds. It was such a flavorful surprise of spice/sweet in an amazing sauce. Both of us ordered house salads (that's our thing) and crushed them too lol I ordered the Maple Plank Roasted Salmon - whoaaa it was soooooo delicious! It melted my mouth with every bite! I cannot even remember what my friend ordered but am sure it was a fish ("which is his favorite dish, but without the money it's still a wish...") dish that he crushed within minutes. This was my third visit to J Gilbert's in McLean for a work function. The first two were good, but not so good that I felt compelled to write a review. The third visit was bad. I will say that the bar and bar staff are great, and the appetizers were very good. But things went quickly down hill from there. We had a large party in a private room, so we had multiple servers. I ordered a Caesar Salad and asked for anchovies (why that isn't an option in a steak house is beyond me). They didn't have any, which I can live with, but that request somehow made my salad very late, coming almost with my meal, and only after we reminded them that I had ordered it. We ordered several nice bottles of wine for the table. One of our servers forgot which bottle was in her hand, and poured the wrong wine into a guest's glass, on top of a completely different wine. Not cool when we're talking about bottles that are north of $150 each. We had a vegetarian in our party who ordered a pasta dish with no chicken. It was brought to him with chicken. It was sent back and returned correctly, but when the bill came, we were charged twice for that dish. I ordered a filet medium rare, which was brought to me medium well. One other person in our party ordered his steak medium rare, and it was brought to him barely cooked at all. He sent it back and it was returned well done. Bringing dessert out was total chaos; it was as if the servers had just written down everything for the table (incorrectly) and forgot which person any of it was supposed to go to. And instead of providing individual plates and silverware for dessert, our server put a stack of plates in the middle of the table and dumped a pile of forks and knives on top, expecting us to just grab things on our own. I could maybe understand that if we had said we were going to be sharing desserts, but no one ever made such a statement. When spending four figures on dinner at a nice restaurant in a private room, I expect the food, the service, and the attention to detail to be far above what we got at J. Gilbert's on this trip. Unfortunately, I think we will be looking for alternatives for future outings with this group. read more

Came to J Gilbert's for my birthday with a group. The restaurant decor is nothing to write home about,m. It has a typical family steakhouse feel to it. Our server was nice and accommodating and gave us a great wine recommendation. I ordered the tomahawk steak with a side of potatoes and risotto. Both of the potatoes and risotto were a bit salty. The steak though, was delectable. I ordered it medium rare and it was definitely a top 5 serving of steak I've ever had. For the prices of the meals, I don't think I'd particularly come back to a J Gilbert's restaurant. I think they need to think about modernizing the restaurant feel to provide a more upscale experience. read more

We asked to be reseated and it was done, no problem. The waitress was very engaging.... but also INCREDIBLY slow. we arrived for a 5:30 reservation and didn't get out until about 8:45. While I really liked her, and she was happy to fulfill our various requests, she would disappear for long stretches of time. Due to the wait, our kids got a bit rambunctious and we let them play with some toys on the carpet (we had been re-seated in their private party area, so they weren't in anybody's way). Both came home with huuuge black smudges on the knees of their pants! The food was... ok. Oddly, they kept getting the orders wrong in very small ways. My mom ordered a side of mushroom risotto, and they gave her an order of mushrooms. I ordered a salad, they didn't bring the croutons. Nothing major, but not what you would expect from a restaurant charging high end prices. Mainly though, the food wasn't worth the price. The bill for five adults was over $300.00. But frankly, the steak wasn't good enough to justify the pricetag. When I pay that much for steak, I want a melt in your mouth, otherworldly experience. And I just didn't get it here. My go to brunch spot! I'm impressed by the variety 20+ dishes in the brunch buffet with lots of vegetarian options. I really enjoy the omelet station and load mine up with veggies, spicy penne pasta, spinach quiches, fluffy biscuits, and pastry galore with mouthwatering chocolate chip cookies, chocolate covered strawberries and marshmallows dipped in fondue. There are also a variety of meats, fresh cheese, fruits, and more. Can't count how many trips I made to the buffet tables and plates I cleared, $30 well spent! The ready to order cinnamon donuts and waffles are really tasty! I love the donuts, they are so fluffy and pipping hot! They remind of funnel cake, while my husband devoured the waffles. The $5 bellinis and mimosas are delicious and a great way to start brunch! My husband enjoyed the Irish coffee (I wish it was part of the $5 deal!) The service is always on point and very polite and cordial. They servers were refilling out glasses or clearing our plate throughout brunch. Unless it's Mother's Day or a holiday, you typically don't need a reservation. As the rush ends around 12:30pm, I recommend coming shortly thereafter. The food starts to get cold after 1pm (still tasty though!) as brunch ends around 2pm. If you are looking to impress you mom, I recommend making a reservation for Mother's Day a month in advance. I waited unless the last minute and the 6 of us sat at the bar, my sister-in-law wasn't too pleased! The Mother's Day brunch is well worth it though, there's a chocolate fondue where you can dip fresh fruits and a larger selection of pastries. I think the other dishes in the buffet are the same. First time here tonight for my birthday. I've heard good things, so I brought my out-of-town parents to also celebrate. Let's just say, we won't be back. I hate writing bad reviews, but this one was needed. Horrible service. 2.5 hours sitting at our table...I'm not even kidding! The hostess was rude and rolled her eyes at us when we asked to sit at a booth. There were plenty of booths available. Not a great start to the evening. Our waitress didn't check on us at all. She seemed very spacey and distracted. We had to flag down other servers for water refills, salt, etc. Our table was never picked up. We had bread plates on our table when our dessert was delivered. Other tables seemed to have wonderful service, so this was quite disappointing. I had the crab cakes. They weren't anything special and burnt on the bottom. The creamed corn with bacon was good. One other odd thing about the restaurant ambiance -they only put a white tablecloth and a real lit candle on your table if it's your anniversary. Very odd. We had to ask a waiter why all the tables had a tablecloth but ours. Strange. The restaurant would look much classier with tablecloths on everyone's table. Floors were dirty, slippery walking back to the restroom. You pass the kitchen galley to get to the restroom and my mom and I heard a few workers in there cursing. Just a strange evening. Saturday,11/26/23, I met four lady friends for lunch at J Gilbert's in McLean, Virginia. We meet once a month and have a difficult time finding restaurants to our liking. We all work/worked nearby and were familiar with J Gilbert's having dined there many times. Well we are happy it is as good as we remembered. For a large restaurant it feels cozy. Warm fire in the fireplace. No loud music. We were seated in an area apart from the more dense number of booths. It was perfect. We could actually talk without shouting. The food was excellent: from the crusty bread loaves, soups, entree salads and salmon dinner to the carrot cake dessert. The food was all attractively plated and delicious. I have been coming to this restaurant for years to celebrate special occasions. The food is consistently high quality and the service top notch. However I recently took my whole family there to celebrate a birthday. Although our reservation was at 645 it was almost 715 and my kids were getting antsy. I went to the host stand where a very nice person ended up getting French fries for the kids which really helped the wait. Then we sat down at the table and ordered. My son asked for a straw about 3 times before it came. Nobody ever came to fill our water cups. Then in one of the strangest things ever the valet who we dropped the car off with came and gave us our keys back with no explanation as we were eating. Next came asking for the bill about 3 times. When I finally got the bill I noticed that it did not include the restaurant offer that I had just shown to the waiter. Another 10 minutes. Still no water and still no waiter. Finally he comes back and we get a new check. He then tells us our kids dinners included ice cream. The kids obviously want it. Another 10-12 minutes he comes back and again asks what ice cream they want. Now another 15 minutes. Still no water and no ice cream. Just as we got up to just leave the ice cream shows Overall moral - good food but I don't think I will ever return the experience was so bad this time read more

Kind of disappointed to be frank, used to hold this place in such high regard but seems like it's had a rough go during the pandemic or something. Cocktails obviously made by someone who doesn't bartend, food presentation has gone down too, beer selection lacking, but at least the prices haven't changed so I guess that's a huge plus. It was my first time going in for lunch so maybe that's it, usually night crew has the most veterans on staff. Dinners in the past were always a 5/5 experience so it's possible this was just a fluke, so I'm going to compromise on a 4/5 and still recommend Gilbert's to people looking for a nice steakhouse in McLean. read more

Lead to confusion when the checks come. Make sure to check your check against the menu. They're sliding in fees.
