She was attentive, kind, funny, and we really enjoyed our conversation with her. Our water cups were always filled, which is greatly appreciated. Everything we ordered was delicious! Complimentary bread is included, but you will have to ask for it. It came out warm and fresh out of the oven, with the most delicious butter on the side. Their Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes are a must try. The steaks, seafood, sides, and dessert were all well executed. Flavors and consistency are on point. Our steaks were cooked to perfection and incredibly flavorful. Dessert was perfect! B, who isn't a big fan of coconut really enjoyed their Seven Layer Coconut Cake. It was so natural tasting. The cake was soft and not overly sweet. The coconut flakes are the real deal and don't taste like the preserved stuff from a bag. The pineapple ice cream and passion fruit coulis on the side really brings this dessert together. The Chocolate Velvet Cake was also a hit. You can't go wrong with chocolate mousse, chocolate ganache, and raspberry ice cream. Yum! I am so glad we got a chance to visit. read more

We had a reservation and were seated promptly. The ambiance gave standard dimly lit steakhouse vibes. Nothing over the top or out of the ordinary. Our server was a gentleman with a very serious countenance, but assuming this is just his presentation, at the end he ended up being very nice. Decided to reserve a table for three for celebrating Father's Day. The online system for reservations was smooth and easy to use couple clicks and my reservation was confirmed even when booking after hours arriving at the restaurant, it took us about 10 minutes to get our table. This delay was understandable given the holiday itself. Upon meeting our waiter, Tim B. he guided us through the menu and made us feel at home with the service. The waiter was very courteous, very reserved and very well dressed in mannered. Despite this, he was also very entertaining and fun. He recommended we give the Father's Day special a try which included a select few meals along with appetizer and dessert options all for one price. There was also a special cocktail available only for Father's Day: a maple bacon and bourbon whisky. After placing our orders, I went with the crab bisque, which was okay, I'm not normally a fan of seafood and was attempting to try something different. I ended up with the 6 ounce filet mignon which included a rosemary glaze along with grilled asparagus, a loaded baked potato, and creamed corn with bacon. I also added the blue cheese butter topping to my steak, which was very great. The overall meal was amazing. The steak was nice and juicy and very tender. I was so excited to go with my family for my birthday. I ordered a cocktail, then the waitress just stared at me without moving to the next person. I was like yeah? And she put her hand out for an ID. That rubbed me the wrong way. Use your words and kindly ask for an ID if necessary. Then my beverage when it came was like half filled. This is where things go wrong. We wait almost an hour for our food to come out. Our order was very basic and a party of 4. It was also a Wednesday night only, not a weekend. My food was also not good. It was like chewy. I got the mixed seafood platter. It also only came with one scallop when it says in the menu it comes with "scallops". That was disappointing as I was looking forward to those the most. You can see this in the attached picture. Lastly, dessert took another 30 minutes. We sat at our booth for a total of 2 hours and 20 minutes. It should not take that long. Not once did we hear sorry or anything. The waitress was just MIA while we waited for our food. Then she magically started to be attentive when the food finally came. Poor situation handling skills. She was clearly avoiding us since the food was taking so long. We never even had a manager come to our table. You would think the server would have involved the manager in this situation. I will not be back to celebrate my birthday or anything with the plenty other options that are available. read more

Finally decided to give this steakhouse a try, and we were not disappointed. The inside feels like a very typical steakhouse, with dark wood tones everywhere. Service was quite attentive and friendly. The bread with the herb whipped butter was actually a great start, and my partner and I split a wedge salad and a steak, both of which the restaurant split nicely into two different plates. The TLDR version is: Hugo is the best waiter I think I've ever had. He saved what could have been a 1/5 disaster on a double birthday dinner and made it a 5/5. The longer version is: my mother had a birthday over the weekend, and it was her boyfriend's birthday yesterday 10/22. So we decided to do the birthday dinner together at J. Gilbert's. Hugo waited on us and everything went fine. He has a great personality and a good sense of humor. My mother asked for a wine recommendation and his recommendation was spot on. The appetizers were great and come out quickly. The trouble began when it was time for the main course. 2 huge parties totaling about 90 people got seated around the same time we did. So the kitchen got very backed up and it took an extremely long time to get our main dishes. I'm pretty patient when it comes to this stuff - I worked in a restaurant kitchen in college and know what it's like. However, my mother's boyfriend, an older Italian gentleman, while normally quite cheerful, started getting extremely frustrated and agitated about the wait time. He complained about the wait time and it could have gotten very ugly. Hugo was extremely gracious, apologized for the wait (even though no fault of his own), and brought over his manager. The manager was nice and comped some of the meal, but my mother's boyfriend was still very agitated. Hugo found out my mother's boyfriend was Italian and it turns out Hugo can speak some Italian. He conversed with my mother's boyfriend in Italian, made some funny jokes, and got the mood lightened up a bit, and got the whole occasion back on a happy track. I don't think there's another waiter on Earth that could have done what Hugo did, given the circumstances. In the end, we had a great time, the food was great, even if we had to wait longer than normal, and on the way out, we laughed that this whole wait hiccup was a funny story we could tell in the future. On the whole, good value. Steaks are excellent, and they come with all the trimmings. However, service can be spotty. Sometimes it's very fast, other times it's excruciatingly slow. And if you come for Happy Hour, don't expect competent bartending. Sometimes it's excellent, sometimes you don't get what you ordered, or the drinks are not made properly. Sometimes servers are attentive, sometimes they disappear for extended periods. Management needs to get a handle on this. read more

We chose to have brunch at J. Gilbert's in McLean today based on the wonderful brunches and a meal delivered by Uber Eats that we had eaten in past years. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by the friendly hostess who seated us in a comfortable booth. Marsha, our server, was welcoming and obtained our cappuccino, Mimosas, Bloody Mary and waters right away. The seafood buffet offered excellent Chesapeake oysters, spiced shrimp, encrusted tuna, and smoked salmon. The hot buffet included delicious biscuits with sausage gravy, house-made spinach quiche, Chicken piccata with sauce, and two salads: pasta with sundried tomatoes, spinach and feta, and cherry tomatoes with mini mozzarella balls. The prime rib station offered hot, fresh prime rib as well as custom-made omelets. Two cold salads such as a Caesar salad, a fruit salad, and a charcuterie and cheeses display were available. Custom-baked mini desserts included carrot cake with whipped cream and pecan, strawberry cheesecake, creme brulee, panacotta and chocolate mousse, in addition to chocolate-dipped strawberries. Marsha was attentive and made sure that we had clean plates through our brunch. She was a delight to speak with and we felt well taken care of! We have been wanting to try this restaurant since we moved to Tysons a year ago. I can't believe we waited so long. The food is amazing. In terms of ambiance, it's a classic steakhouse and can get a bit loud during busy times. We went on a Friday night and it was packed, which is to be expected. Our server, Weselin, was very friendly and had a funny, light hearted attitude. Next time we go we will definitely request him. Now the good stuff...the food! We did the prix fixe. My husband ordered the wedge salad, 6 oz filet combo with scallops, and the chocolate cake. He loved all of it. The wood fired grill flavor on the steak was amazing. Seriously the best steak I think I've had. The scallops were cooked perfectly and literally butter in your mouth. And the mashed potatoes....yum. It ended up being restaurant week so we did the their deal. I started with the crab bisque which was very good! Then I had the lobster tail - perfect! And ended with the chocolate cake, very rich. Update on my Thanksgiving experience as a helpful tip to those who will come on holidays: be prepared for the extended wait after your reservations. Of course, coming on Thanksgiving, you can expect that the restaurant will be hectic as it is one of the only restaurants open, and you can depend on J Gilberts to have a nice steak and/or Thanksgiving options. It may just be that eating out on Thanksgiving will always give you the con of having to wait for extended periods of time no matter where you go, but if you hope to get dinner here on holidays such as Thanksgiving, likely Christmas, and Mother's day, consider making your reservation at 3 or 4 with the expectation to eat around 630 - 7, especially if you have a party larger than 2. Food was good but after waiting for an hour and a half for it come out, I didn't get a picture since I was too hungry at that point (930) despite our 7 o'clock reservation. Again, it seems all restaurants may overbook on this holiday and don't leave a time limit on guests who are reuniting. Service and food was good, though by the time our food came out, they were out of the creme brûlée. Overall, for my foodies out there, the food is consistently good but not exactly life changing. Even still, you can't go wrong here on a regular day. read more
