This is a over the top great restaurant. Good food, good service, good time. Many TV's perfect to watch a sports game, a full bar, a variety of options from apps to desserts. I really do like J Macklins food it is just WAY over priced ;/ I ordered the cobb salad and with a small tip my bill was $17... Although it was good, the salad wasn't big by any means. Dinner here was a mixed bag, but not very good. Our server was very friendly and efficient. The cheeseburger lacked much beef and any taste. The small fries were OK. The happy hour pricing on craft beer was over the top. A glass of Deep Ellum IPA was $8 for happy hour. Our two Margaritas were only $5 each. The Hummus appetizer consisted of olives, green onions, celery and carrots in a tasty setting. The Pesto chicken was good and the sweet potato fries were very unique. The Southwest salad was good as were the kid tenders and kid pizza. The Margaritas were rather weak and they were very small. The white cheese/queso was creamy but not worth the price. This place is a very noisy bar in the PM and it's not recommended for children. read more

This is a review only from their catering. We have had their food catered here at work a number of times and have been very pleased. I have done double takes and asked where did this get catered in from? Macklin's is the response I've gotten a number of times. The catered food has been divine over the last number of years! What I really remember is the answer; J Macklin's has catered this order for us today. I remember some very tasty sandwiches to some tasty salads. Great presentation on the foods as well. I have never been to their location, but in the north Dallas, Lewisville area to get great catered food, I would suggest J Macklin's with out hesitation. I like this place, but tonight was not a good experience. I got the Avocado Tempura Tacos like I always do because they have a very light taste. But tonight they tasted fishy. Now I don't mean fishy like something was wrong (although it was), but fishy like they tasted like fish. It was actually pretty gross. I hate to complain, but in this case it seemed like something needed to be said, so I told the waitress that the tacos did not taste good at all and that they taste like fish, and maybe the chef needs to be alerted because they are clearly cooking the avocado with fish. Her response was "that makes sense, tonight's special is trout". At that point I was done and ready to leave. I would have turned down any attempt to give us the food without paying since we ate half, but she never offered any kind of recovery. I seriously hope this finds its way to the management, because I love walking over for Friday dinner, and that was my favorite meal on the menu. But, sorry I am dropping my 5 star down to a 3, but with hopes that they get it together. Come on guys. read more

I have been dining here since they opened and I think last Thursday will be the last. After waiting for around 15 minutes to have a waitress finally come take our drink order, she disappeared for another 15 minutes. We had two kids with us and it was 7:00 pm when we came in. When she ran past our table we still had no drinks and had been there for a half hour, my 9 year old caught her eye and said we are ready to order. The look the waitress shot her was a mix between pissed off and shock that a kid would address her lack of service. She did however come take our order. The special appetizer was a Thai lettuce wrap, and trying to maintain a Lo carb diet, I ordered them and my daughter did as well. When they were delivered, the three silver dollar sized pieces of lettuce with nearly still frozen shrimp bits did not live up to their $13 per order price. My friend ordered the grilled cheese and tomato soup and said the sandwich was good, however the saucer of soup was ice cold. Yes, like fresh out of the fridge. She sent it back for some heat and eventually they brought a decent sized cup of hot soup. The kid burger was only half eaten and my daughter didn't eat any of her lettuce wraps because she said the over cooked shrimp bits were way too cold. I ate hers out of sheer hunger. Sadly this used to be one of our go to places but now we will be going somewhere else on our 4 or 5 times that we dine out per week. read more

I've passed by this restaurant a thousand times so I figured it was finally time to swing by there and check it out. They have a cute patio with the misting fans going in this Texas summer heat. I ordered to go so went inside to the bar to pick up the strawberry goat cheese salad I ordered with shrimp. Since the prices aren't listed online I figured a salad would not be too pricey but they ended up charging me an additional $7 for shrimp (on top of what was already nearly a $10 salad). The salad was okay but the shrimp was not as tasty or fresh as I imagined...a little disappointing. I'm already leery of ordering any type of seafood living in the landlocked Dallas area...meh. There are lots of other interesting looking things on the menu though (jalapeño cheese grits for example) and I may come back and give other items a try but the salads are probably not your best bet here. read more

Our waiter was friendly and seemed to sense that we were in a hurry -- trying to catch a movie in fact -- and was prompt without being frantic. Unfortunately, I just wasn't a fan of my dish. I ordered the Grilled Mahi Mahi, which came arranged on a small pile of lemony orzo and grilled asparagus. I am not exaggerating when I say it was possibly the smallest piece of fish I have ever been served at a restaurant. It was quite bland and dry as well. Even with the pasta and veggies, I honestly think I was hungrier after finishing my meal than when I started. For a $16 entree, it definitely left something to be desired. The tacos have a mix of coleslaw, Granny Smith apples, and enough spicy to combat the sweet and tangy flavors. The corn tortillas were fresh and homemade. Everything tastes fresh! -THE PORTIONS: plenty of food for either lunch or dinner. My meal was three tacos with one side. I chose the cup of fruit which had strawberries, grapes and pineapple-- more than just melons which I appreciate! -THE SERVICE: from the second I walked in the door, to the moment I left I felt appreciated and well taken care of. We got our food in about 10 minutes! -THE PATIO/ATMOSPHERE: great dining options both inside and out. Comfortable booths, tables or patio seating. I have been going to JMacklins for many years and it has always been a pleasant experience. Today was not that. Today we had to wait for menus, for drinks and we had to wait 50 minutes for our food. When we asked for the manager he was rude and condescending. He blamed printer problems for many other tables getting their food before us, who were seated after us. When a nearby table complained that the food came out cold he told them "If you ate it you are going to pay for it." This manager, whom I've never seen there before, has NO idea what customer service is all about. I'll be eating elsewhere from now on! read more

We dined here tonight for the first time. Our server, 'Nathan H' according to the receipt, was rude and inattentive. It's a shame, because his lack of service ruined our dining experience. The situation was not helped by how attentive he was to our neighboring table. We learned about his golfing experience from his boisterous conversation nearby, so he's obviously capable of being very personable; how strange that he chose not to show that side to us. He didn't make eye contact while we were ordering, and did not even ask us how the meal was until we were both finished eating. The friendliest thing he did was to ask if we wanted desert, but by that point, we just wanted to leave. I enjoyed the food, but I don't think we'll be back due to the terrible service. I specifically created a yelp account so that I could leave this feedback, because our experience was that horrible. We were nervous to come here due to reviews being unimpressive, but tried it out anyway and loved it. The service, especially by the bar staff, has been great. Highlights are a great atmosphere, friendly staff and awesome food. The dr. Pepper short ribs are my favorite, very tender with a bed of well seasoned mashed potatoes and brown gravy, topped off with crispy onion straws. Their brunch shouldn't be missed, either. My wife ordered the grits as a side, and could immediately taste that it was made with chicken stock. This was very upsetting Conclusion: Although we had fun, we won't be going back to eat. I've heard really good things about J Macklins, the food and happy hour specials (which for the record i didn't indulge in on my lunch break) so I was relatively excited. however, I feel like we made the mistake of telling our server that our meal would be free before ordering because she was not very attentive, personable, or really even pleasant for that matter. she took our orders and brought out our food. (which was really good) and that was about it. so needless to say I was less than impressed by the service. the food however was tasty. I ordered the J's greens salad and added salmon. very good! so luckily I didn't have to spend any money, aside for my tip for the lackluster server, so I'm not too disappointed. This is pretty much my favorite place to go for lunch during the week. I'm in love with their Strawberry & Goat Cheese salad. The goat cheese is very lightly breaded and warm. GEEZ it's awesome. If you're not watching your calories, get their grilled cheese. It is several types of cheese and is served with a little bit of their tomato soup (enough for dipping). We had their chocolate layer cake for my friend's birthday, and it was to die for....it has some kind of raspberry flavor in there that makes it drool-worthy. Their menu items change a lot, so it's always exciting to see what they have now. I had some sort of fish sandwich that was awesome, but they didn't have it on the menu this week. Weekday lunch with co-workers. I got the chicken club, very yummy - like yummy times many - however, this was not good for me at all! Lots of bacon, mayo and butter. I didnt feel very good about myself after wards, and I felt like I wasted a whole week of cheesy exercise videos on this one sandwich. Stick with the sandwiches, the tuna sandwich was really not bad. Pork was very dry. Salads were good. Avoid the dinner entree's.
