Had dinner at J. Paul's for the first time tonight and I must say that this place is the best kept secret in Saugatuck/Douglas. Chef Steph's cuisine is out of this world good...Had the chef's table dinner and from the salad to the dessert we were just blown away with it. The flavors, the textures, the overall ambiance of the beautiful vintage dining room, all worked together to make a very enjoyable evening. Excellent service and friendly staff. Excellent all the way around. Our party of five was seated early for our reservations. Our server was prompt and attentive. We shared the cheese and charcuterie plate which was a little sparse for the $18 price but oh so good. The three soup sampler was terrific with my favorite the cucumber and lime soup. Amazing! Between all of us we tried just about all the entrees on the menu: pasta, scallops, beef, salmon and pork chop. Everyone's meat and seafood was cooked perfectly as was my pasta. Wine selection was good and three bottles later we were happy, full and ready for dessert. The guys had port and bourbon flights while the girls had creme brulee and sticky rice. We stopped in for wine and dessert tonight and just loved the experience. The atmosphere is warm and relaxing, the wine list was fantastic, the dessert (chocolate layer cake) was perfect. Mindy, the chef and sommelier came over to the table and filled us in on her background (very impressive experience in Chicago at various well-known restaurants) as well as the history of the building (a hospital until the 1960's). We have heard great things about the brunch and dinner service, we will be back. read more

I'm really torn. I really loved all the food. The risotto and pork chops were amazing. They had a great selection of wine. But the service was absolutely horrible. Took about 30-45 minutes to take our order. Then when we paid, it took about 20-30 minutes for them to charge our cards and let us go. We had other plans and were running late as a result. I would recommend for the food but they really need to work on service. read more

A diamond in the Douglas/Sagatuck area! A must for anyone who wants a fantastic meal with ambience to match. The tuna poke was delicious, flat iron steak out of this world! The menu is inventive and even the roast chicken, that at many places would be bland, was succulent and paired with an outstanding spetzle with mushrooms and spinach. We have dined here several times since they opened. Mindy, Kim and crew do an outstanding job creating fantastic food in a warm, unique and inviting atmosphere. I would not hesitate to try anything on the well-thought-out menu or the fabulous wine list (crafted by Sommelier Mindy). If there is a fresh fish special, have it. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! Period! Now I'll be specifc with the multiple ways this dining experience was lacking: Our reservation was for 7:45 (a party of 6) we didn't cash out until almost 10! There is no reason it should have taken 2 hours. We were 2 couples eating together with our 17 year old sons so it's not like we were hanging out ... drinking a bottle of wine or anything. So service was terrible, not rude, just really non-existent with our server disappearing so often that he was unaware that our appetizer had even been delivered... more on this later. The food: Ironically, $10 for "truffle fries" might be the bargain of the night (even though the fries are clearly frozen and not hand cut). The Porterhouse steak my son ordered was seriously less than the thickness of my pinkie finger!!! I've eaten a lot of steak in my life and know my way around a Porterhouse, usually it's somehing to behold when ordered at a restaurant. I've never even heard of a steak in a restaurant being 1/4 inch thick. The Shrimp Linguini my wife ordered had undercooked pasta and overcooked shrimp...and there were only 4 shrimp in the dish. The Creme Brulee is a laughably small portion and the Apple Turnover tasted like the filling was out of a can and don't let them tell you it's a big serving..it's "normal" and could/should be enhanced with a dollop of creme fraiche or a scoop of ice cream. How about a little insult to injury? Since we were a party of 6 they automatically add a 20% tip... which they don't say anything about on their website and it wasn't mentioned anywhere in my reservation confirmation. By this point I just wanted to get out of there and chose not to debate the integrity of springing this on us at the end of the meal. Did I mention that this debacle of bad service and decidedly below average food took over 2 hours?!?! I could also tell you about the awkard placing for our table of 6, but that would just be piling on at this point. I have eaten here several times in the last few months, and my experience has always been top notch! The menu and the selections are refreshing and slightly different from the surrounding restaurants, which all seem to offer just basic fish/beef fare. I've had the privilege of sampling almost all the apps and entrees, and they've always been fantastic! Service is always great, and the atmosphere is casual yet upscale elegant at the same time. Seriously good food, inventively prepared and attentively served, in a stylish interior and on a delightful outdoor deck with a scenic pond. Live music on the deck for dinner hour. Good wine list, with flights. Our party of 6 sampled many items from the menu--we just kept going they were so good! Special highlights were the tuna poke, charcuterie and cheese plate (have you had elk salami?), crab cakes, and truffle fries. For mains the spicy tiger shrimp, the red snapper, and the lamb sirloin were outstanding. We didn't make it to dessert, alas. We want to come back in the fall to dine inside in the warm, comfortable stylish interior. A great addition to the Saugatuck-Douglas dining scene. A seriously special find to be enjoyed. We have been visiting Saugatuck regularly now for about 6 years and we have our favorite "go to" places. This visit we added another! We had New Years Eve dinner here tonight and would not eat here again! Started with beets thin as tissue topped with nearly invisible goat cheese. It was like they were running out of food. My husband got TWO brussel sprouts with his meal. Ridiculous. And Overpriced! Freezing cold inside and a parking lot that was an ice rink outside. Decent service....waitress was nice. But so disappointing overall and it was our anniversary! read more

What a gorgeous and exciting restaraunt! JPauls is outstanding in every respect. The staff was very attentive and professional. Food was delicious, wine selection phenomonal.
