It looked really good and apparently was also delicious but unfortunately not gluten free. The Charcuterie Board with cheese, salami, pepperoni, and smoked salmon was yummy, as were the brussel sprouts and chicken kabobs. The server said the marinade was not gluten free but I decided to eat it anyways. The chicken was juicy and seasoned well. I really liked the brussel sprouts too. The Dirty Martinis and Paper Plane were great. My friend had the Cucumber cocktail but opted for soda water instead of Sprite and she said it was really good. It looked pretty. The restaurant offers a nice vibe for hanging out and has a great selection of cocktails, wines, and food. I didn't get a chance to try an entree but I'm sure they are good. You will barely notice the extra expense. * * * The Caddie Shack is probably closer to the look and feel of a British pub than are most of the fake British pubs you find in the United States. No - it is not because they serve British beer. They don't serve bitters or microbrews of any kind. They serve Bud Light and Shiners and Coronas. No it is not because they have wainscoting or tartan carpets or the British Premier League on TV. The building is prefab aluminum sheeting. The decoration is negligible. They have basketball and baseball on TV. They got air hockey, shuffleboard and pool. This place could be a military canteen on an army base. It could be a rec room in somebody's house. * * * So what's so British pub-like about a prefab aluminum shack with bar games and cans of lager beer? What makes a real British pub is the sense of community. It is THE public house in the village. There is no other common place to meet - except church. There is no McDonald's. There is no Starbucks. Where do you go to meet your mates? The local. And there is one and only one local. The minute you enter the pub - you feel like you have walked into a family living room - Because this is where the whole family is hanging out. * * * Point Venture is at the very very tippity tip of Lago Vista. It is a good seven miles of twisty-turny driving from FM 1431. It is surrounded on three sides by water. It is far from everything else in the state of Texas. So the only people who go to the Caddie Shack are the people who live in Point Venture. There is one other restaurant near the marina in Point Venture. But otherwise - the Caddie Shack is what there is. So this is where people come and this is where people hang out. Management makes a point to have music most nights. There are regular poker tournaments. (Big cash penalty if you show up late.) There are big sheets of paper on the wall marking everyone's bet on who is going to win the NFL Divisional Championship games this week and what the point spread will be. A lot of people have signed up for bets. It is not that everyone is buddy buddy with everyone else. (People aren't buddy buddy with everyone else in a British pub either). Married couples sit at their tables by themselves playing Buzztime trivia or watching what's on TV. Groups of three and four play the various bar games. Some couples have conversations, soulful or otherwise, just sitting at the bar. This is the place you go in Point Venture, if you don't want to stay home and watch Netflix. Hanging out here is as routine as hanging out in the snack bar in your dorm. * * * I am not a Point Venture kind of a guy. I could never afford the spectacular houses on the lake. Those houses look small from the road. They go down three or four stories BELOW street level. The lower lakefront levels are palatial and magnificent. I don't play golf. I don't like boats. I don't drive a pick-up truck. (The mansions have two or three.) But Caddie Shack just melds in nicely with the Point Venture lifestyle. Any place that brings people together, serves the function of bringing people together. I like the vibe and feeling of Caddie Shack. * * * Now being a twisted Austin yuppie, I can go back to pursuing my obsessions. I like eight ingredient cocktails. I like unsigned bands with songs in 8/17 time. I like violent Korean movies. I like Iranian braised meat dishes with sour lime. What passes over my plate changes every day. Sitting along the marina with boats gently coming and going, The Lighthouse has all the ingredients for an afternoon you don't want to end. Unfortunately, our experience never quite found its sea legs. We arrived with a party of five and walked up to the host stand where several young employees greeted us... sort of. We let them know there were five of us. They nodded. That was it. No "What's your name?" No "We'll get you on the list." No "It'll be about a 30-minute wait." Just... nodding. As more guests started filing in behind us, I finally walked back up and asked if they needed our name or phone number. The group looked at one another like I'd asked them to solve a calculus equation. Eventually someone located a scrap of receipt paper and a marker to write our information down. I'm choosing to believe it was someone's first day because otherwise, it was a genuinely confusing start. The patio was bustling, but considering Texas had apparently opened the Gates of Hades that afternoon, our group requested indoor seating. A plus? There was only one table seated inside and they were just having drinks. We thought it would be a very short wait. About thirty minutes later, one of the hosts finally asked, "Would y'all be okay sitting inside?" Our entire table answered in unison: "YES." Once seated, things improved... at least initially. The dining room overlooking the marina is comfortable, with large windows that let the view do most of the decorating. The televisions were on without dominating the room, making it easy for our family to settle in and enjoy something we hadn't done in years--simply sit around one table together and catch up. Thankfully, we had plenty to talk about because the food took a while to arrive. My brother and I decided to split The Shipwreck, the restaurant's signature sandwich. On paper, it sounded incredible: fried chicken, fried cream cheese, ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato, homemade blueberry jam, and an order of their truffle fries. That's a sandwich that practically dares you not to order it. Unfortunately, reality didn't quite match the menu. The biggest disappointment was the "homemade blueberry jam." It wasn't jam. It tasted exactly like canned blueberry pie filling. That one ingredient completely threw off the sandwich for me. (thankfully, just in case, we had asked for it on the side) Beyond that, it was... fine. Not bad. Not memorable. Just an average fried chicken sandwich wearing a few extra accessories in hopes of becoming something special. For more than twenty dollars, I wanted something that made me think about it on the drive home. Instead, I mostly thought about how much potential it had. The truffle fries were another miss. They arrived barely warm and were cold before we made it halfway through the basket. The promised truffle flavor was faint, there were a few shavings of Parmesan, and instead of the garlic aioli listed on the menu, we were served plain mayonnaise. Meanwhile, our server proved elusive. After taking our order and delivering the food, she seemed to disappear entirely. When she finally resurfaced to greet the table beside us, we took the opportunity to ask for our check before she vanished again. To be fair, two members of our party ordered the chicken fried steak and both enjoyed it, so there were certainly bright spots on the menu. But as a whole, none of us walked away particularly impressed. It's disappointing because The Lighthouse has so much working in its favor. The location is wonderful. The view is exactly what you'd hope for on Lake Travis. The atmosphere invites you to slow down and stay awhile. Now it just needs food and service that rise to meet the setting. As for me? The Lighthouse didn't quite guide me safely to shore. Next time, I'll be looking for another place to dock in search of a better meal.

My dinner mate did address the staff and he came back very apologetic which was nice that he did at least address his tardiness. I believe they were understaffed which is about norm for today's restaurant life. I had the wood fired artichoke hearts, deviled eggs, and my guest had the airline chicken. All dishes were spectacular. The deviled eggs were very unique and full of flavor. I think they were my favorite, but the other two dishes were just as grand so I would definitely get these again. I unfortunately did not get any pictures of my breakfast items. All in all this was the highlight of the stay. I must say that for an old resort in this part of Texas, I was mighty shocked that it tasted so good.
