So, I'm not from Chicago. I am visiting from Houston. I went to Ja for the first time maybe 3 years ago back when it was on the north side. Long story short, I've been WAITING to get back and this trip I was able to make it. Unfortunately this visit wasn't as exciting as my last time coming. I was first turned off when we waited longer than expected for someone to take our drink orders. Once I did order, I was told I couldn't order a combo even though the menu online clearly states I can. I then try to order plantains as an appetizer and I was told they have a "shortage" and so I couldn't get them. I'm just disappointed that it had to be this way, and I doubt I'll return. If something is on the menu it should be available. read more

I'm in love with their Curry Shrimp. The entree comes with the basic rice & beans, and plantains... along with steamed cabbage. Food is very tasty and descent size servings. The atmosphere is very loud. With everyone talking loudly and the music playing the wait staff has to squat down right beside you to even hear your order. On this particular weekend night, the restaurant was crowded and very loud so it's best to sit outside if you want to have a conversation with someone without yelling. I been to this location twice. First time I ordered over the phone and picked it up. Well today my guy and I sat down to eat at the bar and had a drink. He ordered the honey jerk wings and had a issue with his food and after that the bartender attitude changed. Before taking the food to the back he asked for another drink she replied maybe and left. The food was good!!! The only thing I did not like about this place is that it's too small. I made reservations in advance, but when I got there on Friday it was extremely packed! So even with having reservations you still have to wait for a table. Overall DJ was good, food was good and the environment was good, just too overcrowded for me. It's nice.My wife had the Ox Tails...very tender & tasty(..my wife let me have a taste..) I had some Beef Patties for an appetizer(..very good), and I had the Honey Jerk Wings with Rice. The wings were sweet(..the honey..) and kinda spicey(..the jerk..) I got exactly what I asked for. However, it was really good!!. Didn't have room to try the Bread Pudding. I'll try that NEXT time. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We plan on going back. It was good. I'll try the Brown Stewed Chicken next time. It's usually not that hot in Jerk cuisine. Great customer service! I visited here a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday and was in a complete rush to eat because I was trying to make it on time to the movies to see American Sniper. Now if you have ever been to a Jamaican restaurant before, you know that there is no rushing. Us caribbean people are a little laid back and a little slower than the average american. Slow down and live a little! But this is actually a normal paced restaurant. As far as parking goes, hyde park is congested in general but people are always coming an going so it isn't that hard to find a parking spot. If you are lucky, you will find a spot right in front, but if not, there are also parking lots in the area but we always catch someone pulling out of a parking space. Ok, now back to this restaurant, they have hosts at the door right when you walk in so you are immediately greeted and seated! You can pretty much tell that we were in a rush so the manager came over, greeted us and we explained what a rush we were in and he took our order right away. WOW... I was seriously impressed. I mean, this place was packed so we did not think that we would be putting an order in so fast. Now I've visited this place when they were on Armitage street on the north side and WHAT AN UPGRADE. I am excited for them. I ordered the oxtail dinner and my bf ordered jerk and curry chicken. Oh, and I also ordered the Ja'rum punch. The oxtail was great, seasoned perfectly and the punch was so delicious, if we had more time that day, I would have ordered another. Anyways, this place made me want to skip the movie and go to a party because they have the music blasted and all of the televisions going (sports of course) I guess it's kind of like a sports bar in there, a nice one. So guys, if you want to eat, drink and watch sports, they have televisions EVERYWHERE. They are very welcoming and kind here. You can tell they really care about customer service, especially the manager. I will definitely be back. Maybe I'll have my b-day dinner here! First and last time at this restaurant last night. The service was maddeningly slow, which, had I read the reviews, I would have seen is par for the course for this restaurant. Everything took at least 30 minutes, and one order took so long that we couldn't even eat it at the restaurant. But that's not what left the bad taste in my mouth. When we called the manager over to speak with him about the experience, he was full of excuses, several of which placed the blame on my party for the quality of the service. That's just poor customer service and one of the most insulting things I've ever experienced at a restaurant. Only after an extended conversation did he finally offer a somewhat satisfactory discount for our trouble. Food quality aside, this sort of service and response are not what I expect when I chose to dine out, and it is not an experience that I wish to repeat. This was my first time at this location, but I have been to the one in Lincoln Park plenty of times. The restaurant looked really nice, with great music playing, good décor and pleasant staff. Our server, April was attentive and Brian, the manager hooked us up in the end. No surprise here... I ordered the curry goat, my favorite. The plate was massive - filled with goat, cabbage, rice and beans, and delicious ripe plantain. My greedy self, ate all of it. I also had a few Kingston Cosmos that were well made by the bartender. As if we needed to eat more food, we got to try the rum cake and bread pudding too. Don't worry, it was just a taste before boxing them up to go! The food was outstanding, but unfortunately overshadowed by poor service. This was a 2 1/2 hour dining experience. Our server, Nelle, was only seen twice throughout the night. Once to take our orders, and a second time to provide us with incorrect billing. Once the orders were taken, it took 1 hour for the food to come out. Granted, it was absolutely delicious and I was willing to overlook this. However, when it was time for the check, we told the server that we wanted two checks; one for each couple. When he returned with the check there were multiple errors. I took it upon myself to go to him and ask for a revised check since I knew he was busy and would likely not be back at our table for a while. With an attitude, he asked me to explain who's meals were who's and walked away mid explaination. "Okay! He must understand then" is what I thought....until 10 minutes later when he again asked who had what drinks. When he came back with the correct checks we split the payment among two cards. My card was in the check jacket and the other card was given directly to Nelle along with the check. Nelle took it upon himself to toss this card on the table, made a point to dramatically open the check jacket and insert both the card and the receipt while staring at my guest directly in the face as if he could not comprehend the audacity of someone handing him a card without the cover. We sat, stunned at the service we just received- but still tipped him well over 20% because that bad attitude stops with him. I really don't know how or why this guy is still employed here. He really made the whole experience regretful. Please get adequate servers, Ja'Grill. I would love to come back again. read more

I haven't received the food yet, I'm just pissed that the service is severely lacking. My waitress is terrible and forgot to come to our table. We had to have someone get her attention. I asked for limes to go with some ginger beer, she never brought them. We had to get someone else to get them. I set a timer, there's no reason it should take 15+ mins to get limes when I steadily see you doing NOTHING. I'm in the process of walking out because this is ridiculous. The food will in no way compensate for this bad service. The people sitting next to us asked to speak to the manager, I think I might too...I've been here an hour, this is pathetic. UPDATE: Food came an hour after we asked some other waiter to check on our food. Also noticing people that came in after us getting their food at a fairly decent time. Food was 2 stars out of 5, had to pull off charred pieces of chicken. Rice, cabbage and plantains were luke warm. Ginger beer had to have been part battery acid...way too strong. Let me first start off by saying that I've gone to the location that was in Lincoln Park and it was amazing. So my review is not so much of a comparison but my overall experience at this particular spot. My friends and I came here on a Saturday night...definite must to make reservations ahead of time. It cuts back on the wait time for a table. Also make sure that you plan accordingly for time if you have a reservation because parking was terrible. It took us almost 45 mins to find a park. So we finally got in the restaurant and it was LOUD...I mean I couldn't even hear the hostess at the door it was so loud. The place is smaller but no one really bumped into our table so that was no big deal. We did order drinks...the Jamaican Rum Punch was excellent. I highly recommend that drink...only one is needed (want everyone to be safe driving home now) and we tried a special drink they had Mango Martini. That was not so good. The service was great. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and was very friendly. She was also very attentive. The food; however, was not so great. I had the cabbage, rice and peas and plantains. The cabbage was so bland that I had to put some salt and pepper on it, the rice and peas were also bland and dry...I had to put some jerk sauce on them to spruce them up. The plantains weren't so bad. They were sweet but I wish they cooked them a little longer to get caramelized glaze I love. My friend ordered the Jerk Catfish (small) and she said the fish was very good but the sides again were blah. My other friend got the Jerk Ribs which she said were amazing. They were tender and you got a good portion. The sides again were terrible. All in all, would I go back....probably so just for the drinks not so much the food.
