This review and rating is strictly based on the service as me and my family never actually got to ordering. We came in around 2 pm on a Tuesday and sat down. We waited ten minutes without any one in the main dining room paying attention to any of the customers. After asking hello into the kitchen one of the cooks, who was busy texting, replied that our server was "in the bathroom." When she finally arrived our waitress helped everyone but us. We got the message loud and clear and left. We understand that "summer crowds" can be trying but the service was world class in it's rudeness. It was like the staff wanted the place to close down. We went down the street to the Monkey Bar and had the special, Pork Cutlet sandwich, which was outstanding. read more

Great, juicy burgers and wings. I usually just get a bacon cheeseburger and/or buffalo wings. There are tons of other burger varieties, but I personally don't like tons of different toppings piled on. Same menu as Rabbit Hole, minus the alcohol. read more

Always looking for a great burger, I stopped in one evening - a few minutes after they closed. Boo. But just next door is a bar connected serving the same food. Nothing fantastic, very simple place. I have to say that although the food was pretty good it's totally not worth the money. Teeny tiny boneless wings - 8 of them - for $8. A burger without any sides at all (and the size of a wendy's jr cheeseburger), $6....and then a delicious 60-min on tap (yay) for about $6...I don't know, it's not really CT pricing. But it is Old Saybrook and it is pretty touristy... It's a great addition to the same old same old in the area but just not exciting enough for me to go back again. read more

The burger was good, but not outstanding. The fries were very good, but extremely salty. They were over-salted with some kind of sea salt or something. If you are salt sensitive, consider ordering fries without the extra salt. Two hours later, and my tongue is still stinging. This place is very cold during the winter. Tables are positioned within a few feet of the door, and every time the door opens, there is a cold breeze. As far as service - I watched one of the servers drop part of a take out order on the floor as she tried to balance the containers while texting on her phone. Nothing spilled out, but still... Also, with plenty of tables available, they were turning away customers beginning at 7:30, saying that they close at 8:00. Interesting business strategy. read more

Actually a 3.5 This review is about Jack Rabbits Tavern. I recently stopped in with a group of friends, two of which live in Old Saybrook and who have been previously. It was exactly what I expected, and as my friend who lives in Old Saybrook described it eloquently as a "Chill bar." We arrived early enough where we all sat comfortably at one of the tables. The food was decent, I got a burger (with a fried egg on top!), which was slightly overpriced, and chicken wings which were decent. The burger price would be fine if it included fries... or chips... or a salad, or something other than just the burger! The wings were good, just could stand to be a bit more crispy (I know that's picky, and low class... but I LOVE wings). The ambiance was fine for a place that you go to sit and have a few brews and shoot the breeze with friends... The beer selection was more than adequate with an EXCELLENT house ale they had on tap when I went (I had 3 pints during my experience). I will definitely return, but most likely only to drink a few brews and catch up with friends. You can't expect more than that, plus, everyone needs a local "Chill bar," and my friends and I found it (with an above average beer selection!)! read more

Was looking for a quick lunch with my father in law and decided to try Jack Rabbits. Great selection of dogs and burgers. The "Chicago " was spicy and fresh. The "Atlantic city" was everything father in law was looking for. The onion rings were good also. Look forward to trying more. read more

An hour and 15 minutes for a burger and a dog. People were coming in eating and leaving before we got all of our food. I had to bring the check to the register to pay, the girl looked at me and turned her back and snapped "i'll be right with you." Went here on a Friday night with my son. Only one waitress working the tables and the counter and it was very busy. She was non stop but could not keep up. Burgers are good but small for the price. Greek salad is my favorite- try it! The fries are good but not great think they changed the fries since it first opened. My son loves the milkshakes. read more

Love the wings, sweet potato fries and burgers. Two For One - Jack Rabbits and Rabbit Hole Tavern are next to each other and share the same kitchen. Jack Rabbits is brightly lit and very suitable for lunch dining, whereas "the hole" is much darker... and well its a bar. Depending on your attitude at that moment, and if you need to return to work afterwards, you may choose "the hole" so you can imbibe in an adult beverage or two along with some tasty wings, burgers, etc. Either way, its good food, decent value, and your choice of environments. If you have been on the water all day and need to get out of the sun for a little cool down, check out "the hole." read more

Driving down 95 and looking for a non-fast food restaurant, we pulled off into the town of Old Saybrook looking for a decent dinner. Great service, yummy food, and can't beat the price to quality ratio. The sliders are better than the original (Blue Manna in NJ, not White Castle). Best hamburger joint I have been to! The different types of toppings and sauces make it hard to make a choice. The food is high quality you can tell the buns are not those cheap store brand. It is best as a takeout but if you want a quick bite minus young children its great! Plus the prices are reasonable. I would definitely recommend this place. read more

We have been going here for years- usually it's a decent local hang for a decent beer and decent food (food is never great, but fine, with the exception of the guac which is bomb). Usually I'd give them 3 solid stars, mostly because there but aren't many other options around. We went recently and ordered wings. The first time they came out wrong (we asked for bone in and it came out boneless). Sent back. Came out second time with wrong sauce (we ordered regular wing sauce, they came out drenched in something super sweet). Sent back. Came out a third time and the kitchen had simply dumped the sauce we ordered to begin with on the wings we had just sent back... So now they were extra gross tasting and soggy. Possibly the worst burger I've ever had.i ordered the burger with an egg on top and asked for it to have pink in the center.i also ordered onion rings with it.it was delivered well done and floating in oil at the bottom of the basket.since the cheap roll absorbed some of the oil as soon as I tried to pick it up it fell apart.i didn't finish eating it.my onion rings were fried nicely but,very heavily salted.i hate to say I left hungry. read more

My new favorite burger joint! Just dropped by today to check out this so called best burger in CT. First the place is a nice-small informal joint right on main street in nice Old Saybrook. I sat at the small stainless steel bar and ordered a basic cheddar cheeseburger with LTM and pickles. It was cooked pink to perfection and just soooo tasty! They don't have beer or drinks I believe it's just a small privately owned joint. The cost was about 5$ for a burger and they have gourmet recipe burgers too. The cook and owner is an educated chef which makes all the difference. I have tried Louis, Prime 16, Bobby Flay's at Mohegan and Plan B. All are good BUT I really prefer Jack Rabbits burgers to any place. This is a quick stop while you head up north to Rhode Island and Cape and no added expense of waiters or over the top decorations to jack up the price like Plan B. For me this is the place to go for burger lovers. Delicious burgers-love it!! read more

This place is great. One of the top 5 burgers that I've ever had. We come here fairly often. You need to try the MAGIC SAUCE....so damn good. The Boston Burger is what I get everytime (of course it has the magic sauce). Fries and rings are great, they have a bunch of great dipping sauces, everyone I've tried is like crack...can't stop eating it. This is a lunchtime burger joint, no frills. Don't try the wings, they're not very good. If you want a place with great burgers, hot dogs, French fries, onion rings, and shakes then this is the best in the area. read more

I've been to Jack Rabbits a few times since it's opening and every time I get the same thing - California turkey burger - and every time it's been good. I usually share a basket of sweet potato fries (yum!) with a friend and they always like whatever they get as well. Sometimes it feels a little cramped because all the tables are in a row and close together, so maybe go during irregular eating hours. Better for two or three people rather than a group, but you can always do takeout. Inexpensive and good for summer rather than winter. read more

Love the food but the service needs attention. Came in about 2 weeks ago with family (4 of us total). There was a large table, which would have been perfect for us, but there were 2 people at it. So we figured we could all squeeze onto a smaller table against the wall. However, moving chairs is against their rules, as it blocks the walkway. If they have such stubborn rules about moving of tables, then they should really reserve the large tables for larger parties. makes no sense. Anyway, we sat at the bar (we were jus tlooking for a casual lunch anyway). We sat for 10 minutes without being acknowledged. The two servers were running around like chickens with their heads cut off...they passed us multiple times. Aboutt 15 minutes into the ordeal, a couple came in and sat at a table. The server greeted them within 2 minutes of walking in the door...we left immediately. there seemed to be no order/organization to their service.. Now that I have tried their milkshakes, hot dogs, wings, and burgers it is truly a great small local place to go. Very family friendly and the waitress working was so nice to my wife and I even though we couldn't make up our mind on what to get, very polite. The original Jack Rabbits expanded into the closed down tavern next door, it is now called Jack Rabbits Tavern. The idea is great, serve beer with burgers and fries. Unfortunately, the great idea ends there. The burgers do taste good, but are tiny and overpriced. The service is HORRIBLE!! The owner, whose handsome face is splashed on the website and declared the best chef in the northeast, has poor customer service skills and is a grumpy mess. It is no wonder why his previous attempt at food in Old Saybrook failed miserably. We may go back on September 15th each year to treat our dog to her birthday dinner. She likes the burgers and doesn't really care that the owner is unhelpful and an angry man! read more

Came in for lunch around 1pm on Friday, July 1. Sat at a table, bartender/waitress immediately shouted that we'd have to wait because she was slammed. The place was less than half full. We cleaned our own table and sat waiting for 10 minutes before we got menus or any service. After getting menus it was another ten minutes before we were able to order drinks. After our drinks were dropped on the table, with no eye contact, we had to wait again to order. While we sat, we observed the bartender attending to other tables (she visited one table that seemed to have a friend at it two or three times) and cleaning other empty tables. After getting her attention we were finally able to place our order....and then we waited approximately half an hour for our two burgers (no special requests) and onion rings. During this time three other parties who arrived after us received their food before us, including one gentleman who walked in as we were ordering. Eventually the bartender noticed we had been waiting and "went to check" but it seemed clear that our food had never been put in. We finally got our burgers about 10 minutes later and finished eating in about 15 minutes. Overall the experience lasted approximately an hour and 20 minutes, which is unacceptable, particularly at a restaurant that specializes in burgers and hot dogs. The food itself was fine, but overpriced. $9.50 for a burger (with apples and brie cheese) on a run-of-the-mill bun and no sides is steep. We cannot completely blame the bartender for this horrendous service. It is clearly a managerial issue as well. Why would a restaurant have one person, who is clearly not a skilled server, cover the entire bar and high tops on the Friday of a holiday weekend?? At one point a server from the other side of the restaurant came to "help", but only attended to two tables and left. Needless to say we won't be back. read more

We came here one afternoon for lunch after the craft fair. It was a busy day, and even with a line out the door the owner offered my 3 year old some ice cream after his meal, on the house, which was really sweet. I got the veggie burger California style which was very good, husband got the nachos which were huge, and my son had the grilled mac and cheese (SOOO good!) we will definitely be back and next time I want to try one of their lobster "hot dogs" which are lobster meat rolled into a casing like a hot dog. read more
