Bar next door is available to eat if you want to accompany your fried food with locals and down some beers in a low key, kind of grungy but in a good way if you are into that sort of bar scene thing. this spot, (kind of like 5 guys,) creates a misconception that the food is somehow better than McDonalds but it's really the same type of food, slightly tweaked, in a different setting. Horrible service! This place came highly recommended as friends of mine know the owner Jack and claimed that he is an accomplished chef. The food does not reflect that. Great food, the flavors are well put together, I honestly love their food but my only gripe is that I pay $10.50 for a medium sized burger with no fries. I understand that it's Old Saybrook and that everything is expensive in the area but I would definitely bump that $10.50 to $11 and throw some French fries in the bag with the burger. I only go here on occasion because of this exact reason. If they did that I'd be there once a week and I'd make it a 5 star rating, until then maybe once a month. I absolutely LOVE Jack Rabbits! I'm a local and a "pescatarian" and this is the best spot! You can get vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, or carnivore pub cuisine and it's all delicious. If you gave up red meat and wish you could still have a juicy burger, love different things or just want some awesome tuna give their tuna burgers a try - they are out of this world. Their meatless hot dogs are amazing. Fries are outstanding. Pretty much everything I have ordered at Jack Rabbit's has been fantastic. Friend's have tried their wings and have been pleased as well (at Rabbit Hole). The options are endless too - get your burgers or dogs a slew of different ways and they have lobster dogs too! I've enjoyed every burger and hot dog I've had at this picnic-style joint in Old Saybrook, a few blocks down from Starbucks. The burgers were excellent; juicy, tasty, perfectly-cooked. My family also loved the hot dogs. There is a big selection of both which I think you can see on the menu they posted online. That said, Old Saybrook and Essex have plenty of young children. It would be great if the manager could find a way to accommodate families a bit better. I mean, the menu is all hot dogs, hamburgers, and shakes - but when we ate there the first time, we felt like we were rocking the boat by bringing in our two (well-behaved, I think) kids. When we returned for a second visit, everything went more smoothly. The service was very fast and friendly, and my 4 year-old was perfectly comfortable in his chair. It looks like a problem remains, though, if your kids need a high-chair: this restaurant isn't allowed to stock them. (So bring your own seat-adaptor thing.) The restroom is next door, in the back of a dimly-lit bar, which kind of feels like a tough-guy saloon. I concur with the other reviewers that on my first visit, the waitstaff seemed like they had better things to do than take care of the patrons. However, on the second visit things went just fine. I don't mind this place having 50's decor, but I kinda mind the plastic tables and chairs. They're just really chinzy looking. I'm not saying the owners should spend a fortune on furniture, but given the high failure rate of restaurants, decent second hand furniture can be had at closings and auctions. The place looks like someone went to Job Lot and bought $25 worth of cheaply made plastic patio furniture. You know the type; the type that blows off your patio and onto your neighbor's lawn in the slightest breeze. It's a burger joint, and the burgers and french fries are very good. The french fries are shoe string style (very close to McDonalds style actually). A burger, fries and drink will cost you about $10. I agree with the other reviewer that the whole set up is kinda confusing. It would have been helpful if the girl employee told me what to do when I walked through the door (instead of gossiping with her girlfriends). So I was left pondering, "Do I seat myself?" I went with two friends of mine during an outlet shopping trip at the neighboring outlet malls. The service was good - our waitress was very personable and helped one of my friends out with choosing a burger. I got the Boston Burger - the burger itself was delicious, but it was NOT "red" in the center - closer to a medium all the way through. Also, I was a little disappointed in the shortage of bacon on the burger - I was really hoping for some delicious porky goodness. Finally, I was not super impressed with the grilled mac and cheese - it was on the bland side, and a little dry. Also, the price for the mac ($5) seemed a little steep. $4 would have been a little easier to swallow (pardon the pun). Good burgers and fries - done to order, which is not to be discounted today haha. I've had too many "rare" burgers that have no pink at all let alone the done-ness (or not-done-ness?) that I like. We ordered 2 burgers, a Cowboy Burger with beans, onion, and avacado and a Boston Burger that had mushrooms, bacon, American cheese, and "magic sauce". I was trying (albeit unsuccessfully) to keep it on the lighter side of the calorie scale with a Buffalo turkey hot dog - because I didn't realize I could get a turkey burger until too late. The onion rings were of the frozen variety, which is kind of a shame as fresh battered ones would have really gone well with the motif. They were serviceable but nothing about which you'd write home, the same for the fries. The burgers were the standout though, good flavor and (as I've mentioned) cooked correctly. Thought it was a nice spot. Turned out to be not what we expected. $18.00 for a 4 inch lobster hot dog with no sides. The drinks were weak and they charged us a dollar for a tall drink but the waitress never told us that there were two different prices. The shrimp and lobster firecracker was underwhelming for $14. Easily the best burgers in town. Retro setting and simple service and setup are paramount for success, and Jack Rabbits has hit it on the head. Stopped here for lunch with the kids on the way home from the Long Island Ferry, and was very pleased. Great spot for a quick lunch with kids in tow -- fast service, clean room, and pretty damned good burgers. The patties were super juicy and flavorful. Took me a while to figure out what to order, as there were several delicious-sounding choices on the menu. I ended up going with the "Hawaiian" burger, which had sweet (allegedly Maui) onions, prosciutto and a spicy mustard-honey sauce of some sort, and it was great. Onion rings were disappointing (thin, possibly pre-frozen), and the sweet potato fries were good but not great (nice crunch to them, maybe they batter them first?). Jack is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and you will know this the first time you see his creations. Unreal combinations of ingredients that work together like a symphony. Everything on the menu is awesome! Burgers are better than 5 Guy's and Plan B and the dogs are incredible. You have to try the Atom Bomb hummel hot dog. Been going weekly for lunch since they opened. The service has slipped since Ashton and Ashely are gone, but the food is still great. Would be 5 stars but Jack looses 1 for the average service . We've been a few times and really enjoy the food. I'm kind of surprised by the reviews saying the staff isn't helpful because we haven had those issues. We also haven't had seating issues either. Our 4 year old manages fine in the lawn chair seating. And we're slightly germ-a-phobes so we have a small portable high chair for our infant daughter that straps easily to any chair. Foodwise we're happy here. Pretty farm good burgers and innovative dog creations. The pepper relish and corn relish are both excellent on either dogs or burgers. Really terrific place for burgers of all kinds but I had a wonderful Greek salad with grilled chicken that was delicious. They served it in a vertical arranged presentation with warm chicken on top. Sadly, Jack Rabbits has become a miserly dining experience--and that's even with my lowered expectations after my visits over the last few years. This most recent meal (October 2016) is my last there. I ordered sliders--while the topping options were great, the patties themselves were underwhelming, just about 1/2 the size of the bun. The slider is essentially a bread/topping sandwich with very little beef flavor to recommend it. On the plus side, the tiny little patties of beef were cooked well and the french friends were great. But, that said, the miserly slider is enough to make me seek out my burger and slider fix somewhere else. read more

Great spot for burgers, dogs, fries and shakes!! They have a great menu here of gourmet burgers and dogs. I get the diablo dog every time, its spicy and has a kick, but it is great. Been here several times with family and friends, and it is always an enjoyable experience. My mom loves the cobb salad. I'm a big fan of the dirty wings. The waitresses and cooks work their butt off, and it shows! The aesthetic is bright, casual, clean, friendly and reminds me of an old-time diner. Fantastic burger place . They have great food and the staff is always super friendly . Whenever I am in Old Saybrook I like to stop here . They have a kinda rustic bar next door which is more for the locals . They have lobster hot dogs , not my cup of tea but fun to try . Good milkshakes as well .
