We've enjoyed having lunch and dinner at Jack's Monterey over the past few months since its renovation and totally enjoyed it, both for client meetings and just relaxation. Last Sunday, a friend and I decided to try the Jacks Monterey Brunch and absolutely loved our experience! We ordered delicious blintzes, chicken and waffles and eggs benedict. Everything was flavorful, fresh and sustainable. Accompanied by our caffe lattes, we were good to go stroll a festival in the Custom House Plaza. The service was excellent and attentive, from our waitress, Rebecca, to Dylan, the Manager at the restaurant. The ambiance is so spacious, comfortable and airy with the gorgeous trees and high ceilings as opposed to more claustrophobic, cramped restaurants we've tried. The validated parking was appreciated too. We will definitely be back and look forward to trying the earlier breakfast with the bottomless mimosas, too. One of the best Monterey has to offer! This was our anniversary getaway and of all the restaurants we ate at over 4 days this was the absolute best. My husband found a coupon through Travel Zoo so we thought we would give it a try. The service (ask for Lauren) was above and beyond from all of the staff and hostesses. The food was excellent. Portions were perfect. Try the Skillet Rolls with artichoke dip appetizer or the calamari with was tender and coated with tempura that was amazing. The filet's we has were perfectly done and very tender. We will be back. The atmosphere was open and inviting. Though you may want to ask for a table away from the main door as it can get cool and windy. The bar was busy and I heard the drinks were good. Wine by the glass is a bit expensive so be aware but very good selection. read more

I arrived Sunday night on a business trip and hasn't had much to eat all day. I was being late but the gracious and cheerful woman at the desk said they'd be serving until 11. Score! Lauren was my waitpetson. She was attentive and cheerful. I had what had to be one of THE best Manhattans I've had in a very long time. I had the Portola burger - cooked to perfection with fabulous fries. I ordered medium-rare and by Gum I got medium rare cooked perfectly. Just a lovely late-evening experience all around. Fast-forward two days and I'm in the bar, not wanting to go to the conference event that evening. I reprised the Manhattan and also enjoyed their Old Fashioned and their Sazerac. I promise I'm not writing this while being three sheets to the wind. But the drinks were perfect. So was the salad and so was the Jack's Cheese Bake. Great food, great cocktails, great waitstaff and a friendly energy made for a nice evening. I'll be sure to visit next time I'm up here. Highly recommended. read more

The star was for the super friendly and attentive waitstaff lets start with parking there is none its in a super busy hotel that already has the smallest two story parking garage ive seen in my life that isnt free. The restaurant is literally in the middle of the lobby table everywhere members walking past dogs walking past yes i saw three non registered dogs in one dinner setting wtf and loud as could possibly be i could literally see the front desk from my table weirdest set up hands down, if they wanted to they could have taken up the closed up club members only swanky breakfast lounge for the restaurant but its obvious the restaurant is last and incomplete thought of the hotel and its new....macaroni-and cheese dish for my son tasted like milked down velveta and the sauce had little lumps of un blended cheese the pot of bread said it came with artichokes and romano um thats a lie it was a sloppy huge pile of cream cheese with little tiny overly cooked artichokes and tasted non exsistent i dont like pepper and i had to pepper it to even eat it for flavor the huge pile came slopped over 4 small humhah rolls what a joke The sauce that came with the brick chicken had a tang that only uncooked alcohol could provide absolutely nasty and my turkey pot pie? 16 for an entre and it was about 5 inches wide 2 inches tall(super small like appetizer) the pastry literally had separated egg yolk on top wtf i picked off a piece to show my mom SOLID OVERCOOKED YOLK like boiled eggs a complete joke the inside had barely anything in the thick small cup hardly any veggies if u could say veggie it was a few peas and celery one small cube of carrot a few oddly shaped turkey pieces and bland soupy sauce. The Riesling was overly acidic and the wine glasses where not tall enough or full enough at the bottom to do a correct tasting- if it wasnt for us coming out of town to stop by after the bistro we wanted was booked up as soon as we walked past what i thought was the bar in the lobby that was actually this restaurant we would have walked right on out- not fine dining and a true technical disaster oh and the beautiful trees that grow around almost every table with drop leaves all over you while you eat- goodbye!!!!!!!!!! read more

We parked at the downtown west parking lot at Tyler St and just spent the day at the Cannery and the aquarium. It saved us navigating the construction at Portola Hotel. It was just a block away. The restaurant is right by the lobby. I would have given this review a solid 4 stars for the food but the service was just not quite there. First, I made reservations 3 days ahead because of a special occasion but when we arrived, there was no special table. It's as if oh yeah, just sit where ever. Next, the drink order took a while to get out. We ordered specialty drinks which sadly were just ordinary. We ordered appetizers --crab cakes and veal cheeks. There was a misunderstanding because I ordered crab cakes to share. Anyway, the server said she'll fix it. It took a while and when it came out the cc was burnt on one side, on the plus side the dish included a half of a boiled egg which the first order did not. Now, I know the chef is not consistent. Next the entree came out, they were stellar! Salmon, scallops and steak. 3 different dishes all executed well. Portion size was just right, no doggy bags here. But like a roller coaster here comes the down part, water was not filled, no check in from the server and took a long time to get the bill. I've just had a horrible experience here at Jacks Monterey, I knew as soon as I walked in that I wanted a Lemon Drop, my husband however wasn't sure. Our waitress was pleasant and got my drink right away. My husband walked over to the bar to read the specials and was snapped at by the bartender to make his order and to sit down. Then the bartender proceeded to talk about my husband to another male waiter. After returning to our table he expressed that he wanted to leave. We will NEVER dine here again. Being a local we will NEVER recommend Jacks to our visiting friends or family. read more

The atmosphere is great. Very relaxing and quiet. It's like eating in an aviary with no birds. The menu looks delicious but I must have ordered the wrong thing. My husband's steak sandwich looked delicious but I ended up with horribly dry quiche. I didn't know quiche could even be that dry. Their thousand island salad dressing also was not great. Whoever was the cook last night, was absolutely amazing. My boyfriend's New York strip and my chicken breast were both cooked to perfection. We were so happy with our meals this evening and highly recommend both dishes. I used live in monterey and worked in the restaurant business and was looking for somewhere off the beaten path. This was the place! It's inside the portola hotel but it's pretty neat inside with the trees and the lighting. The bar is beautiful and modern. We also ordered a portola-rita to share for 20 and it consists of 3 drinks in one. It came in this cool copper pineapple with a ladle. It was delicious!!! The price is great for what you get compared to the overpriced restaurants on the wharf or cannery row. Truly was happy with the food and we will be back. read more

We had eaten at Jacks restaurant many times in the past and enjoyed it very much, but had not been there since they had made all the changes. The wife and I arrived early for our reservation and was greeted by the hostess. We observed the main dinning room was closed off for a private party so we were shown to a table in the atrium area. I was very disappointed in the seating it was like eating in a cafeteria with hotel guest walking through the open areas and in and out of the doors leading outside the hotel. The noise level was extreme with sounds echoing through the restaurant. The actual tables and chairs looked like those used in a cafeteria. So dissatisfying that we chose to leave and go to another restaurant for our 43rd Anniversary. Sorry Jacks we won't be back, the changes made were not for us! read more

Not sure if we came here on an off night, but we were seated for quite awhile before someone asked us what we wanted to drink and it wasn't busy at that time. We never quite knew who our server was, I had to ask someone if they could take our order (I hate that). If your staff isn't paying attention that a table has been sitting there for awhile and the menus are down, someone should be asking if they're ready to place their order! The Cesar salad was quite good and it's a large serving, the scallops were also good with the mushrooms. I enjoyed the sauce. Whatever my boyfriend ate gave him food poisoning! He had a burger, but he thinks it was the papaya that was in his mixed drink that got him sick. The bartender took a LONG time making his drink and the server said the bartender had to get some papaya or make some papaya concoction but it took a ridiculous amount of time for his drink. Coming for a romantic getaway and getting food poisoning pretty much kills the mood. So thanks for that. I enjoyed my meal, service was sub-par and obviously I have to give 1 star for the food poisoning. read more

"A little piece of heaven!" Newly remodeled restaurant inside the Portola Hotel. Gorgeous indoor atrium seating, bar, fire place and outdoor seating as well. Magnificent ambience as we dined under the indoor trees! We ordered the hot cast iron skillet rolls w/warm artichoke cheese spread~magnificent!! There was some sort of miscommunication in the kitchen and two orders came out, so they wrapped one up for us to take home!! Also tried the side of asparagus (fantastic!) I ordered the 3-way sea scallops....my goodness!!! They were to die for!! Cooked to perfection and each so very different and tasty!! My daughter ordered the Monterey bay salmon, served on a mile-high pile of vermicelli, mushrooms, and vegetables (more than she could possibly eat, so my granddaughter took half home)....she RAVED about the salmon! The service was spectacular--quick and effecient--dishes clear immediately and replaced immediately, with such grace and consideration. This is truly and VERY SPECIAL new restaurant that will be calling you back again and again. I can't wait to go back (even if it is a two-hour drive!! read more
