Classic Filet Mignon
Nellie P.

I'd like to start off by saying the service was great and the place was beautiful. But if I'm being honest, I had high expectations for this place, and left feeling underwhelmed. I ordered the Classic Filet Mignon and was actually a little disappointed. The flavors of the filet were just not there for me. The potatoes felt stiff and lacked butter, cream, or broth, and also didn't have a lot of flavor. Unfortunately, I kinda wish we ate somewhere else. This place wasn't worth the price. Side note: They validate parking.

We came back to Portola hotel and spa and had to try Jacks again. We had the Philly cheese steak sandwich, prawn scampi pasta, huevos rancheros, and the breakfast burrito. Everything was delicious. The pasta got better than before. The sandwich is not your normal Philly steak sandwich it looked more like a steak burger but it was good. Their breakfast was hands down the best I've had in a long time. We ate outside so we took the food to go since in the morning there is no service outside but the hostess was very accommodating with our needs. The outside sitting is great and relaxing as well. The inside of the restaurant is very pleasing to the eye and clean. Will totally recommend eating here.

HUMMUS & ORGANIC VEGGIES

We've been coming here for years. It is a perfect spot to dine with car week and other big events going on around town. All the action around is fun! The hummus plate is one of the best I've had around. All of the food is good, and the prime rib on Friday and Saturday's is delicious!

Clam chowder was not very good. Bread and butter was tasty! Always appreciate good fresh butter. Hotel lobby style atmosphere but they have a couple of tvs for sports which is nice. Paid for a $59 check with a $100 and the server brought back two $20s as change and scurried off basically forcing an overtip which was annoying....

The service was pretty meh and very unfriendly. Seems like all the waiters and hostess were in a bad mood and that kind of made my birthday dinner with my family unpleasant. Food was pretty bland but the drinks were great. The restaurant and hotel are absolutely beautiful but everything else was lackluster

Huevos rancheros was the best I have ever had. Server Plu was the best! No need to leave the hotel for this breakfast!

We just stopped for a quick visit before going out with friends to a different restaurant. We ended up grabbing a couple of drinks from the bar and had the bread. Our female bartender who had been working for 19-20 years was amazing and had great service with super sparkly nails. The drinks are good and the bread was outstanding or as the kids would say (that was gas). It's in the lobby of the hotel so perfect if you don't want to go far to eat. They have breakfast then closed till dinner and I heard live music one night.

Dessert & beverages at the bar is always my favorite way to end a night in downtown Monterey. Sooo many options & the best bartenders in town. They acknowledge me immediately, even when they're busy. Not like Cibo's where the bartenders spend more time on the phone just watching their customers from the mirrors. Jacks prices are good. Latte is served in a soup bowl. Sorry, I forgot to get a pic. Warm yourself by the fire & don't forget to use the super clean bathrooms before you leave. Ample parking & location is great for accessing everything in Monterey. Check out the hotel, too.

The mezcal mule, Asian Persuasion, and Brussels sprouts were all awesome! Best bar in Monterey by far (now that 1833 is closed).

The restaurant feels a little hidden. The food was great. Service was nice and friendly. A little pricey but tasty.

The inside is very cozy feeling, with the entire wall behind the bar being basically a library of whiskey. My first visit, I had a flight of Redwood Empire bourbon & rye. It was god, RE makes great stuff. For my second visit, I had their Islay Trio flight, wanting to try something different. Best one was by far the Lagavulin 16 year (glass on the right), as it has a rich peaty flavor to it. They even allowed my dog to sit inside with me, although we were limited to the counters at the front of the lounge. Nonetheless, the staff were very accommodating to my pup and I, even bringing him water. This is a fantastic place to visit if you're a whiskey connoisseur, or just want a good cocktail. Cheers!

As a whisky enthusiast going back to 2017, this place is fantastic for trying and trying and trying…read more...and trying. Mitch the owner knows things, has stories, and can point you to bottles to try. And if he's gotten to know your palate, he'll start suggesting some bottles you should buy from his shop. And if you're a little tipsy, you might buy that bottle even if you really didn't want to. But then you'll taste the bottle later and curse Mitch for being right about the damn bottle. Anyway, always a mystery visit when I'm in town.

The vibes are here but it all stops there…read more.. Let me start by saying that I love this place. Just needs a bit of cleaning up on their transparency. The 'keep it open' policy is something I appreciate but would also appreciate an itemized receipt when you close out. Here's why to keep your eye out when drinking at this establishment. 1- when you close out, it's helpful to verify what you consumed to ensure you're corrected charged. My receipt was the merchant copy and the customer copy. Itemized? Really had to ask for it. 2- the merchant copy - it asked for a tip and the total amount. When we closed out our beer and well drink, it was ~$28. Weird, right? So my thought was that they clearly charged something incorrect. 3- when there's something automatically charged, it had better be communicated to me upfront. The gratuity was automatically added and IT WAS 20%! No sign, no way to notify me that it was already added. It didn't even say so on the merchant or customer copy. On top of that, the copy asked for AN ADDITIONAL TIP. For something like that, I had better get great service. 4- The service here is spotty at best. There's usually one bartender for the often busy bar. Not a problem, usually. But with that high of a price, better serve your customers well and have a fully stocked bar. 5 - the options were lacking. Two things you'd think would be stocked but weren't - espresso (come on, even Kahlua) and apple liqueur for an espresso martini and appletini were too much to ask for, I guess. Overall, a disappointment. Good thing they have the vibes nearly right. But awful business practices.

I stuck with a classic martini, but others in our party of five explored the cocktail menu and were impressed. The bartender was warm and welcoming and greeted us right away for our reservation. Unfortunately, the experience took an awkward turn at seating. We had requested a view and were about to be accommodated when another staff member (auburn hair) interrupted abruptly and loudly, insisting we not be seated up front due to other reservations. It was uncomfortable and felt unprofessional--especially in front of guests. As it turned out, she was our server. Throughout the evening, her demeanor didn't improve and felt out of step with the otherwise welcoming environment. Having spent over 25 years in the industry and as a restaurant owner, I know how important frontline staff are to the guest experience, and this simply didn't reflect the level this place is capable of. That said, this feels like the exception--not the norm. I've had pleasant experiences here before and will return, hopeful that this was just an off moment.

Yet the ambiance, service, and food are very good! I love the various aspects of the decor, as well. Other than parking challenges on a busy night in the downtown, we were lucky to get a table for 5 relatively quickly, as this place isn't that large, with some additional bar seating, and it seems very popular. 5:30 was a great time, as we watched the waiting line grow longer after we were seated. Our server, Michael J., did a great job of greeting us, providing menus, and taking initial drink orders while we decided what to try. We decided to try BBQ honey wings, fried artichoke hearts, and onion rings for appetizers. The main courses were two orders of kids' cheese pizza and tater tots, a small dinner salad, a cup of New England-style clam chowder, and a NY Steak sandwich. The food came in a reasonable time, with appetizers and salad first, then the rest. The apps were good, but the onion rings were a bit greasy. The honey wings were well-liked, as well as the artichoke hearts, which, strangely, were not oily like the onion rings. Yummy! The cheese pizzas paired with tater tots were certainly different, but the pizza was more like a reheated frozen pizza. The tots were okay. The NY Steak sandwich was good as well, with a side of steak fries - obviously! Overall, we enjoyed the meal and would definitely consider dining here in the future when in town.

We made a reservation the day before and got a table outside on the pier right by the water during sunset. We started with the half dozen oysters and the coastal clam chowder bread bowl. The oysters were some of the freshest I've had and tasted really clean. The clam chowder was New England style without bacon, which I liked, and it was buttery with plenty of clams. The bread bowl had a nice crunch and paired really well with the soup. I got the grilled chicken piccata for my main. The chicken was too dry, but the piccata sauce was really good. It came with mashed potatoes and vegetables, and both were flavorful and cooked well. I also got the China Cove Mai Tai. It was nice and strong. For dessert we got a chocolate cake with ice cream. The cake itself tasted good, but the ice cream was flat, not very flavorful, and too crumbly. The view from the pier during sunset was hard to beat, and the staff was really kind, took pictures for us, and let us stay well past closing without making us feel rushed.

We got a bit early before our reservation, and we sat at the bar for a couple drinks before dinner. There was plenty of room and bartenders were super attentive. After relaxing for a bit, we joined the dining room for our reservation. We got a beautiful spot right on the water. Our waiter Hannah promptly came to check on us and get a drink order started. My partner continued to have some very cold coors light like which he appreciated. I switched it up from Prosecco to having a Hugo spritz, which felt very refreshing. We started with truffle fries and a Caesar salad. My partner rated the Caesar salad and the fries assault eight out of 10 on both both very flavorful dressing was fantastic on the salad lettuce was very cold. Good sign of freshness. Moving onto our entrées he had the seafood pasta and I had the cioppino pot. Both very hearty in their portions. I was shown in Photos that cioppino pot I had was overflowing with different proteins from rock fresh to shrimp, clams, mussels, and crab. It was extremely flavorful, definitely one of the best cioppino I've had. My partner thought his seafood pasta was cooked perfectly also had plenty of protein to satisfy him. Only room for improvement was that it seemed our server got pretty busy with some other tables getting all set at once. Along with the fact that they had forgotten to bring me a spoon for my soup and it took a minute to wave someone down. And an honorable mention was us being able to see in otter finishing his own dinner while we were having ours very cute super fun evening for us.
