The place was definitely a hole in the wall and tiny inside. But, the food is delicious and the place is warm and friendly. The bacon is perfectly cooked - crisp and warm. The blueberry pancake is large and fills the plate, is a bit cake like and the fresh blueberries inside are amazing. Oh, the prices are great as well; money well spent. Fantastic breakfast! Tiny place but if you get there early you might be lucky enough to get a table or a spot at the counter. My husband had corned beef hash that was excellent. My eggs were cooked to perfection, sausage patties were great and the hash browns were nice and crispy. It's definitely a neighborhood staple. I checked out this little hole in the wall first thing on a Saturday morning in Old Town Alexandria, close to King Street and the riverfront. Very nice! I had an omelette for breakfast - it was large, tasty and STUFFED full of sausage, onions, and green and red peppers. The two Mongolian women working there (new owners) were friendly and efficient. Several regulars came in while I was there, and some came in for carry out. Real coffee cups and plates by the way. And they do accept credit cards (one review said cash only - not so, at least not now). Recommended for a quick bite - but it's little, don't go with a big group. read more

Everything here is the best you'll taste anywhere. His homemade corned beef on rye with slaw & Russian dressing is a delight unsurpassed by any Kosher Deli in the country. I am 63 and have never had better. My only problem is parking is hard and the place is small and usually crowded due to the great food and low prices, but despite this it is well worth going through the obstacles as I do at least six days a week. If your near Old Town Alexandria give him a try. (Caution!) Eating at Jack's Place can be addicting. read more

This place was just okay. I've had better sandwiches. I ordered a sausage, egg, and cheese toasted sandwich. My husband ordered a western omelette and he said he's had better as well. Their menus have lots on them so maybe we just ordered some "not so popular" items. First come first serve seating. Limited seating. Place fits maybe 20 people. Cash only. 1 cook on the day we visited-so service was slower....not sure if this is how it normally is. 1 cashier/waitress. This hometown spot is a great place to enjoy good food and great company. Be ready to wait, since this place only seats 12 at a time. Had great conversation with a few other customers, the hostess and good 'ole Jack, who man's the grill. This is a place where you come to enjoy the company. The menu is straight forward, and the prices are very cheap compared to the area. The food took awhile while Jack was slaving away on the single grill top, but there was no lack of great conversations. Once we received the food, we were definitely pleased. It was an awesome start to a D.C. sightseeing day. I recommend this to anyone looking for a great breakfast in the area, since breakfast nooks are scarce. Please note this place doesn't take any type of plastic cards, so bring cash, or be prepared to leave your first-born as collateral, while you run to the ATM. read more

Jack's Place is the perfect neighborhood spot. The food and the ingredients are high quality. Great rolls/bread for breakfast sandwiches. They make their own corned beef hash. The dining area is small - bar and a few tables (two outside on nice days). The people who work there are friendly. Realizing it was cash only, we headed for an atm. 5 minutes later we were back and were told we couldn't be served 'food' because the grill had been turned off with 40 minutes til closing. I'm a long-time Saturday morning regular here, so my affection for this place is so hard-wired that I can't fairly review it for better or worse. But I can offer a couple perspectives to help w/ your first visit: 1) The "breakfast usual" sandwich ---- egg + american cheese + bacon-lettuce-tomato-mayo --- is really excellent and a nice, and a satisfying but not large breakfast itself. I usually get it on rye; sourdough good as well. If you don't know what you want, that's a good place to start. If you're especially hungry, get an order of home fries (not the hash browns, which are pre-made patties) with it. 2) Pancakes are large + thick - one is enough for most folks. Blueberry version almost always available and good. Generic faux-maple syrup, however. French toast (choose the Italian bread version) well-liked. 3) There's a pretty regular set there, but it's a friendly crew, I think. Seems busiest around 9:00 am - can be a little slow at the "rush" period around then. 4) Really hungry? The corned beef hash (served w/ two eggs) is pretty good - it's made w/ chopped corned beef and large chunks of potatoes [it's thankfully NOT the canned/minced style w/ small potatoes that are served in some places]. Not always available, but usually available. 5) Jack's is about a 5 minute stroll from the northeast corner of Alexandria City Hall plaza, where there's a pretty good farmer's market on Saturday mornings most of the year - so if you're looking for another reason to come to Old Town, that's a good thing to add to the itinerary. Probably best to park near Jack's, walk to market, then come back for breakfast (parking is less available in blocks just adjacent to the Market/City Hall). read more

I first started going to Jack's actually before Jack even bought it. My history with this deli goes back to 1986. 24 years ago....doesn't seem possible. I live in Chicago now, but until June of '03 I lived in Bowie, Md and at least once a day and sometimes twice a day I would eat at this deli. Loved it. Loved the comraderie of the 'locals'. Watched a couple Super Bowl games there, my picture is on the wall in the restaurant as well. To all my 'regulars' of an era gone by....Hi there...it's Jerry-D. We arrived at Jacks at about 20 after 8am on Sunday the 2nd(1/2/11). There was a hand written note on the door saying they were closed the previous three days. Even though we weren't rue they would open it seemed like a car was waiting for them too. We sat on their bench, and "jack" himself came around the corner. We went in and sat down, it's a tiny little place. We ordered, and jack was cooking very quickly. While we waited we looked at all of the pictures on the wall. My company is new in the neighborhood and I tried a breakfast sandwich the first day I went. Very filling and satisfying. The second morning I ordered the same sandwich, it was about half the size and dry. I understand it was a different cook, but seriously for almost $5 consistency isn't a lot to ask for. I watched as the cook made it cutting corners and I guess I made her uncomfortable because she stared at me and had the audacity to ask if something was wrong with me. Oh no!! That's not rude to a paying customer. Needless to say, I was looking for a new spot to cater weekly breakfast, that would at least appreciate my business. This wont be a contender. Went there for breakfast on a Sunday morning, with my girlfriend. She was drinking tea that she had made at home. The tea was in a ceramic St. Elmos coffee shop mug, which I had given her as a gift and she uses every day. The owner told us that we could not have a competitor's cup in his place. Huh??? We thought it was a little ribbing and he was joking, but he was not. I have travelled the world and eaten meat on a stick from street vendors, but never heard a request this weird. Is Jack afraid to compete with better establishments, insecure, or just a little "off"? His behavior was childish, unprofessional and more than a little strange. I vacillated between incredulity, anger, and concern for his state of his mind. I actually ended up just feeling sorry for him. Scary. I dropped in this afternoon because a sign on the window said fresh squeezed grapefruit juice. While I watched, the woman dropped a knife on the floor, picked it up off the floor with no gloves on. She held the knife under running water for one second, and then proceeded to cut and handle the grapefruit. Obviously the person had not been given a single bit of training in the regulations regarding dropping a knife on the floor or wearing gloves. Truly scary. I paid in advance because I was in hurry but I walked out without receiving my juice. I don't think anybody should be offered anything that was cut by a knife that had been dropped on the floor without being washed. I'm sure if I had been an inspector that place would have been closed down immediately. read more

I can not speak about the quality of the food at this small cafe but I can say that the help and the manager are both extremely rude individuals. It is not a pleasant place to enjoy a meal. My husband, daughter and a friend entered and sat at the counter. We were immediately ordered not to move the chairs and spoken to in an extremely rude manner. I am sure any establishment has the right implement rules but this place specializes in just being rude and ill mannered.
