The owner is friendly, but obviously a business man. When I went in, I let him know specifically that I was there cause I'm exploring a new neighborhood and would like to make my purchase and take a picture for my review. He cringed! I told him that he was polite and ran a nice establishment, thusly he's got nothing to worry about. This store has everything you might expect. Travel size pain relievers, baby powder, I phone chargers, snacks and beverages. What you wouldn't expect, is the tremendous selection of beer and wine. The beer rivals what you would see at your everyday Freddy's. I mentioned that to Jae, he laughed and modestly accepted the complement and in the good spirit of a small business owner, listed off places that might be "more to your liking". At this market, you'll be greeted by a great selection and a friendly guy (usually), and if you're like me and seek out small businesses to help out, explore the immediate area. The prices at Jae's have gotten so high that I actively avoid going there whenever I have another option. Everything is a dollar or two more expensive than nearby convenience stores, and some items, like cereal, are priced at nearly $10. On top of that, the prices at the register often don't match what's advertised on the shelf, and I've had to point it out multiple times so it could be corrected. I don't blame the cashiers. That's not their job. Management needs to do a better job keeping prices accurate and staying competitive. At this point, I'd rather go to Plaid Pantry, which is disappointing because I'd prefer to support a local business. read more

Oh yes, oh yes. 5-stars for a mini mart. Yes, I do say so myself. Jae's gets 5-stars for one reason and one reason alone - the beer selection. While Jae's selection is not as extensive as it's sister, the 39th Street Market, Jae's has a pretty phenomenal selection of beer for a mini mart. Jae's offers your standard run-down kwik-e mart options of snack food, necessities, and beer. You can find lots of great micros, belgians, and local beers that are usually only available at the better beer stores or places like New Seasons here at Jae's. Would you ever be able to find a Stone bitter chocolate imperial stout 22 at your local random convenience store? No. The best part? The prices are not a rip-off. While this is not a destination place for niche beers for me, I definitely would stop here before any other local mini mart. Check it. It's worth your time. read more

I have been going here for years and it will always be my favorite convenience store. Great selection and even greater staff.

I asked if he took card since I only had huge bills, he said yes. He ran my card and asked if I wanted a receipt. I said yes and notice he charged me extra. I asked him why, he pointed to a old hand written sign on the counter indicating an extra 50 cent fee. I informed him I don't mind paying it, but he should be up front about the fee to his customers. He told me it was my fault and I need to look as he pointed at the sign. I told him no need to be rude because without his customers he wouldn't have a business and all I was asking that he be up front with customers about the credit card fee. Love this market so much. It has been in the neighborhood since I can remember and has an amazing beer selection for a market (as it should be in SE Portland). I am always greeted with a big smile and hello by Hector when I come in and it seems he really goes out of his way to make his customers happy. I tried to make a purchase with my visa check card and was told that all card purchases were given a 50 cent fee. I informed the clerk that both visa and MasterCard say that stores cannot do this. He persisted and I left without buying anything. I reported the store to both companies. I would have liked to frequent this place but looks like I wont be back. read more

I have never written a Yelp review because I work in customer service and try to be understanding. As an essential worker in customer service, I know we are all stressed and on edge right now so I am never one to judge. That being said, my experience here last night was incredibly unprofessional and I've never experienced anything similar. Last night at around 10:30 pm, my significant other and I went in to purchase a couple of the small pina colada chillers. Both of us are young (21 and 22 respectively) and have state-issued IDs that say "Under 21 until xx-xx-xxxx." I have been 21 for about a year and have never had problems in any bars, restaurants, liquor stores, or convenience stores. The cashier gave my partner an extremely hard time about his ID, even saying "you're under 21, man." I myself have an OLCC Server's Permit and calmly attempted to explain that my partner's ID read "under 21 until 07-01-20" and that it was July 10th so the ID was valid for the purchase of alcohol. The guy stood there nervously and told us he didn't have a scanner when my partner told him to scan it. My boyfriend calmly asked him a few times what was wrong with it and the cashier wouldn't say anything. At this point, it had been a few minutes and the guy behind us chimed in and said that his ID had the same thing when he turned 21 and that he never had issues with it. The cashier would not budge. He asked who was purchasing the alcohol, implying that he would sell it to me but not my partner despite the fact that we both had the same "under 21 until xx-xx-xxxx" statement on our IDs and the same kind of ID. The main difference between us? My partner is a gender nonconforming man and had a gay pride bag and dangly earrings on. I really and truly feel that my partner was discriminated against. I have worked in customer service and supervised alcohol sales in a concert venue and have never seen something like this happen. Had I been behind the counter, I would have served both of us. We ended up leaving and purchasing hard seltzer at the gas station on 39th and Belmont with no problems. I would never handle a situation the way this cashier did. His handling of the situation was extremely unprofessional at best and discriminatory at worst. I will not be returning to this establishment. read more

This place is great in a pinch. They have a pretty decent beer and wine selection. Some of their items are way more expensive than other convenience stores/grocery stores, but they're "honest" about it... as in the owner/manager will straight up say, "we have to stay in business." As with any business, as long as you expect them to be how they are, what's to not like? (aka, I only go here when I have to :P ) read more

Jae's Market is wonderful. The owner is nice. I asked him if he could order grapefruit Perrier for me because I never see it at Fred Meyer's anymore. He ordered it for me and had it later that week in the shop. It is an awesome store with a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
