They do a very good job. The food was also excellent. Our lunch consisted of fish tacos and the seafood pot, both were delicious. Parking is available on the street, valet parking is out front. The restaurant has a lot of natural light and it looks like it's always packed. I really enjoyed this restaurant. Top marks in my opinion! Probably our best meal in the Del Mar/La Jolla/ SD area. We brought a house guest to Jake's for lunch by the sea. It was a Monday afternoon so that it wouldn't be too busy. Parking across the street costs $15 for one hour, but things are expensive in Del Mar. No table right at the window so we were back a bit. Not a problem for me since Del Mar is my home, and I always see the ocean. The problem was the noise. I could not talk across the table and had to strain to speak to the person beside me. Then they tell me they have no Mexican beer - Thanks, Trump Then they tell me we can't move to the patio to escape the noise. Then we got up and fled down the street to Chin's for a much better lunch. What people see in crowds of people making a hellish racket while you eat is beyond me. read more

Didn't enjoy the entire "experience." Jake's used to be a nice seafood restaurant. But it seems as if it now wants to be a high-end, expensive place with small over-priced plates. But it doesn't have the atmosphere and the food isn't up to it. The greeting and service was mostly fine. They charge $10 to valet. That is, they charge customers to park there. The food was mediocre considering the price. The grilled shrimp had bacon wrapped around it--yuck. A good way to ruin shrimp. The bacon overpowered the shrimp. It ought to be named shrimp-stuffed bacon. $31. The scallops seemed bland. $39. Considering the quality, the food is way over-priced. The Vibe: Everyone goes to Jake's because it overlooks the beach and to see the sunset. However, it's not an "intimate" environment. The place is LOUD. My dinner mate and I couldn't have a nice conversation--we had to yell at each other. When our server handed me the check-paying device to select tip % and sign, it defaulted the tip to 22%. I went here for my mom's 70th birthday and left very very disappointed. We got sat by the terrace, so the view was more than amazing, however everything we ordered was below average and I was surprised at how this restaurant has 4 stars with this type of mediocre food. I ordered ceviche [great], Caesar salad [great, but how can you go wrong], lemon garlic roasted fish [very bland, no flavor/seasoning inside the fish or orzo], chefs burger [patty was not marinated/seasoned and was very bland as well, we left most of it] Not sure if I picked the wrong day where they didn't have the main chef, but everything was very disappointing and not what I remembered from years ago. Only thing good was our server, Juda. Honestly, wanted to return everything, but also didn't want to make a scene on a good day. I met my niece for lunch and one of the reasons is because we ate at the Hula Grill on Maui and the Ahi Poke bowl was the BEST we had ever eaten! Why I only gave 4 * is Jakes doesn't use the same recipe. BIG ? Why not? Their bowl paled in comparison and I would never order again. But on a + the service was great by Michael S! And he suggested the Lemon garlic roasted fish which was a 10! Please tell me why a sister restaurant wouldn't use the same Poke bowl recipe? Ah Jakes, we have returned for our department holiday lunch after a 2 year hiatus. It was good to be back. Pro-tip: Want the best bang for you buck of an adult beverage? Get the canned Cutwater mango margarita. Cutwater's pre-made margaritas in a can are over 12% alcohol. Thats basically two drinks for the price of one at $8. Two years ago I got a beer on tap and had no idea it would arrive in the dinkiest size glass. I felt so foolish back then and I have learned from my mistakes!! And yes its tasty. Have it poured in a cold glass and you are good to go. Anyhoo, we got to sit at the same large party table right on the window edge looking out the beach. I thought I had perfected the dining and followed Heather of the past in asking for bread for the table. The way the server responded and asking about how many orders for the table gave me pause... um, this is complimentary, right? Big no. They now charge for requested bread (due to post-covid life). That wasnt expected and a first for me, esp at a fne dining spot. So it goes. The big hit of the table was ordering the calamari. Its really a solid choice. I went with a caesar salad to start and it was crisp and enjoyable (not a whole lot of surprise with that item). For my meal, I once again when with the fish plate (Achiote roasted fish), that was mahi mahi along with farro (which I love). The meal was perfection even though mahi wouldnt be my first choice if I had one. I added a side of brussels sprouts with my meal instead of as an app, after research and a lot of rave reviews. Same feedback from those at my table who got it as a starter. I will say... good, not great. WAY too much sauce and acid in it. I guess Im just a purist. The server totally forgot to put in the entree order for the person at my table who ordered first...then she was pretty adamant that person never ordered it and she did everything right. Weird response. I was right next to them so I know it was ordered... but then a bunch of other things were added so maybe she just got confused. Only issue but it wasnt like there wasnt other food to eat. I know serving for a large group is tough. They didnt add the gratuity to the bill even thought it was a party of like 12. We made a spontaneous stop at Jake's for a light lunch after hiking at the beautiful Torrey Pines State Reserve. What a great choice! It is located off Coast Hwy right on the water. Since we did not have reservations and the restaurant was packed for a Tuesday afternoon, we decided to sit in the bar area. Great beach house ambience! Our servers were friendly and the food was good! If I had one gripe, we always had to hunt down our server to refill my ice tea but we were enjoying such a beautiful day today we didn't mind as much. All in all we will definitely stop here again when in the area. Note: try to valet park or park in the metered street. We parked across the street in a public parking lot and paid $20. My partner had the Norwegian salmon plate and the polenta with it was magic. I got the lemon garlic fish plate with orzo rice and this Squid ink vinaigrette I believe that had the perfect amount of spice and hotness. My partner and I had a lovely date night during Restaurant Week. First of all, we felt a little out of place - everyone around us looked a little different from us and older than us. Nonetheless, the ocean view is hard to beat and I can only imagine how beautiful it might be to dine here while it's light out. We found street parking but noticed that valet was a popular option. The our first course, we had the crispy calamari and bbq ribs. Calamari was different than what you'd usually get from like an Italian restaurant, but it was fine. Bbq ribs were fall of the bone tender and I liked the sweeter tones of the sauce. My partner had the achiote roasted fish for main, which was a little overcooked in my opinion, but flavors were fine. I ordered the braised short rib which comes with a charred pineapple vinaigrette and served atop garlic whipped potatoes. We ended with some fruity sorbet and of course, the hula pie. Neither of us are huge about chocolate, so the pie ended up being too indulgent for us but I really enjoyed it! I think for a regular night, this is definitely fine dining prices and you do pay for a view. Nothing made me think wow, amazing, but it was great food nonetheless and I'd recommend it. read more

Jake's is one of San Diego fav spots. Great views of the ocean - especially for sunsets. Food is good - they get busy so sometimes things come out rushed. Also, be sure to make reservations and plan on being stuck in the parking lot until your table is ready - took us about 40 minutes - we came during the prime hours (7 pm). I got seafood pot - mussels, fish, shrimp on a risotto base. Very good - but I hate to say this because it IS seafood - just a bit too salty. Selection was decent, we shared a couple of starters. Since I had seafood for the previous three days, I was eager for something else, so I ordered the Chef's Burger (sirloin & brisket), which came with fries and was outstanding. Our guests loved their Mixed Seafood Pot, Surfing Steak, and Lemon Garlic Roasted Fish (halibut). Our only beef was the valet ($8) vs. public ($20) parking 'option', which is pretty much a Del Mar thing, as nearby street parking is pretty lean. Dear Jake's Del Mar Management, I'm writing to share my recent experience at your restaurant, which unfortunately fell far below expectations. During our visit, we waited over 30 minutes just to receive our appetizer, while multiple other tables around us--who were seated after us--received their food well before we did. It was frustrating and confusing to see such an imbalance in service timing. It was clear that the zoning and scheduling of your waitstaff needs serious reevaluation. Our server, while absolutely amazing and doing her best, was stretched far too thin. She had to constantly go back and forth from the deck to inside, which seemed completely inefficient and unfair--to both her and us as guests. We appreciated her effort, but the long wait times for food and service made for an exhausting and disappointing dining experience. To make matters worse, when the food finally arrived, it was underwhelming--bland and far from the quality we expected from a restaurant with Jake's reputation. I hope you'll take this feedback to heart and consider improving your service structure and kitchen coordination. The service was fantastic and it is right on the beach for some gorgeous views while enjoying dinner. I was so looking forward to eating here after talking to some friends. Our server was nice and she sat us by the window so we could see the ocean. We did not place a drink order and our waitress did not offer water. So, I guess you have to ask for it because it is not offered. My friends ordered the fish and chips ($23) and they were not happy. On one plate the fish was not cooked all the way through. The server said she would redo the plate but by the time the food would have come out we would be done so she asked for her to just bring one piece of fish. We all thought she would just discount the plate. The waitress brought back an entire plate. It was cooked this time but it was just okay. My other friend also said she was not impressed. What is sad, is that my picture make it look like it is really good. I ordered the turkey sandwich which came with melted brie, apple, tomato apricot chutney, arugula on a rustique roll. It was like two sandwiches with a bag of chips for $17.50. The bread was a little hard so I wasn't crazy about it but the sandwich itself was good. The best part were the chips. In fact, as good as we make them back in NC. I know I am paying for the Oceanview, but probably won't be back. It was just okay. Parking is valet and I would suggest you use it because across the street the price for parking is outrageous. I have looked at the reviews and it appears it goes from 1-5 stars.
