Newly remodeled and looking fantastic, Jakes is a beautiful place to dine. Poseidon next door has an open patio. Jake's is great when it is a little cooler. Their patio is covered. "Food enters through the eye first", and the presentation is fantastic at Jakes. Had a crab appetizer with avocado mouse last time. Ridiculously good. Splurge with a half bottle of Veuve Cliquot with this gem. Enjoy. read more

My husband and I along with two friends dined here a couple nights ago. We mainly wanted to come to enjoy dinner with a gorgeous view of the beach and sunset..unfortunately we weren't able to get to dinner til about 8pm but the view of the beach was still nice! We thought it would be dark but the restaurant's lights from above gave the perfect amount of lighting to see the waves. This place has great views and great ambiance! Food : delicious! My hubby and I were obsessed with the ahi tartare tacos appetizer! Omg it was so good with their wasabi cream cheese! So so good!! We also got their dinner specials for the evening, lamb chops and opa Hawaiian fish both very very good and prepared perfectly! Also loved that it didn't feel stuffy.. Nice but casual. Our server, Christian was really great. He was very friendly and attentive! The restaurant closed at 9pm and since we had a late start we were there til 9:30..never ever felt bad or rushed! I came here on Easter and it was busy but we scored a seat with an ocean view! It was awesome. The food was so good. The calamari was the best I've ever had. We all had the Kobe burgers and they were cooked perfectly. The service was top notch and everyone working there was so friendly. read more

Having another amazing dinner at Jake's thanks to Nate who made me his personal spicy sauce to go with the thickest most mouthwatering Calamari you will ever wrap your lips around and Chucky in the bar who let me turn the spicy cucumber margarita into a martini with Tito's vodka. You're paying for a world-class ocean view and white table cloth service, not great food (it's good, but not great). I felt like I was eating at a hotel restaurant (probably because I've been to Duke's on Maui, a sister restaurant in this family of restaurants). Appetizers: Fried calamari strips with the sweet chili sauce was fine...better than the brussel sprouts (come on - everyone is doing brussel sprouts nowadays and these were only ok...I can do this kind of roasted brussel sprouts at home). I didn't enjoy my pan seared fresh fish entree--the sea bass was nicely cooked, but it was on top of a blackbean quinoa (? I don't remember, I barely took more than a few bites) patty (think veggie burger) and served with sauteed greens, coconut cream, pomegranate seeds, and grilled tomatoes.....huh? It just didn't go together for me, so I ate all the bits separately. When I reach for a second piece of bread at the end of the meal, that's not a good sign...I like alot of different types of food, but this fish would have been better with more traditional side dishes. We shared the popular hula pie, which is really just a giant wedge of ice cream with a tiny chocolate cookie crust and a generous pour of hot fudge on it. It was fun to share and eat. But the best part of the meal was going out on the grassy green lawn and catching an amazing San Diego sunset. That is what I'm going to remember about this meal. The menu is always fresh, drinks are fabulous, and the service (whether at the bar or tables) is great. I typically would not leave a review for a place with sooo many reviews. But my food and experience challenged the status quo on every account! If price is a consideration, visit on Wednesday and take advantage of appetizers at the bar. Food is priced fair for offerings. Parking is challenging due to popularity and a $5 valet fee is a small set back. First, our server Daniel is the man and earned every compliment I could offer. He was spot on with his recommendation of the mixed pot fish dish. And the scallops are the best on the west coast! I made an online reservation for Jake's and asked to be seated as close to the water as possible. Though we didn't get an outside table, they placed us next to the window where we had a great view of the beach and water. Unfortunately, that table came with a collection of flies that did not seem to go away no matter what we did. It was disgusting. Flies were on the window and the floor as we ate. The service was alright, the waitress repeatedly tried to rush us while we were eating leisurely-and there were plenty of other tables to seat other patrons. The food was good and the drinks were alright. This restaurant is best for the views! read more

Very disappointed. Food was AWFUL - Service just so so. Went there for a special occasion. Eight of us there, each ordered a different item on the menu. It was terrible - even the hamburger was inedible. Asked for it medium well and it came to the table very bloody. Ugh! First time I've been to Jake's in Del Mar. You can't beat the location, especially if seated by the window. The tables by the windows are packed way too close together. I felt like I was bumping into a neighboring table the entire time. It was also incredibly loud. I think the server felt like she had to yell at us the entire time. I was recommended the fish tacos but wasn't too impressed. They tasted pretty standard to anywhere else I could get them. My wife had the shrimp scampi which she said was "amazing". My 4 year old son got the kids cheez-it breaded chicken. I'm guessing they don't serve to kids often because his plate was extremely hot. It's typically not a good idea to get a small child a hot plate. I'm guessing it was sitting under the heat lamp for too long. This is something the certainly needs to be addressed by the kitchen/serving staff. Service was also pretty slow. It took about 10 minutes to get my bottled beer. I probably won't be back unless someone else forced me to. Food for me was average and over priced for what I got. Service wasn't great. Lacked common sense for kids. Packed too tight. read more

We had lunch at Jake's today and I needed to share our experience On the pro side the weather was beautiful outside and it is such a gorgeous view from inside the restaurant and from the patio. The service was very good. I think it has a nice ambience and although we don't drink I can see that the bar was very busy and people were enjoying the white variety of cocktails and wine available to them The reason we gave this a three star is because of their meal we had. We both ordered the seafood bowl which came highly recommended by our waitress. She even said it was on the dinner menu as well is that lunch because it was such a favorite. We found this dish tasteless. Someone describe their experience as being bland but this was not even up to that standard. We asked for some spices that we could add to make the dish palatable. They did give us some Tabasco sauce but the broth the seafood was cooked in made all the seafood also tasteless and mushy. Very disappointing. We did not order any of the other dishes would Suggest you stay away from this dish. The waitress did say that maybe that chef hadn't prepared it quite right. Maybe they had a substitute chef that day but that is hardly an excuse for a restaurant that had such good ratings read more

We love Jake's! Our family loves the location, food, and service. Parking is awful, but the low-cost valet parking makes it easier. We always have a truly delicious meal. My coworkers had the ahi tuna entree and the vegan dish. I tried both and loved those as well. If you have room for dessert the sea salt creme brûlée was so good! Worth sharing!! Jake's is hands down my favorite restaurant in Del Mar. The location is perfect and the food is delicious. Must try dishes include the brussels sprout appetizer, macadamia nut salmon and hula pie. Be sure to book a reservation as this place can be difficult to get in to, especially during the summer months. Enjoy! read more

I took my gf here for our 2 month celebration type dinner. Though we didn't get the window table that has some spectacular ocean view, we were happy to be there. My new york strip was cooked just right and was very good. She enjoyed her grilled salmon as well. Romantic ambiance. They have great selection of wine. The server was very homely and professional at the same time. Although we only went here for fine dining experience + atmosphere, we were surprised that the quality of food far exceeded our expectation. They have stairs in the back of the restaurant where you can go down to the beach. My gf thought it was extremely romantic when we had a walk next to the beach where they had benches. I would go here once in awhile for special occasions. When I made my reservations through OpenTable, I put a note in there that I would like to sit somewhere conducive to a second date. It's a good thing that I'm a VIP member on OpenTable. It's also a good thing that when we showed up the dining room manager checked us in. He asked me if we could wait a few moments, because they were bumping us up to first class. My date and I were seated at the best seats in the house. Corner table, just on the other side of the glass from the beach, away from the noise (well, as away as we could get). The food was great. We went during restaurant week, so we both took advantage of the great deals. I had calamari in an orange tamarind sauce for an appetizer, Macadamia nut Salmon for a main course, and Creme Brulee for dessert. She had the same, except she had the prime rib. Personally, I am a dessert snob, especially when it comes to Creme Brulee and Tiramisu. Jake's was the best I've had outside of Finale in Boston. So, any Finale or Creme Brulee fans, you have to try Jake's Creme Brulee. Finale edges them out but just barely. Okay, service. The service was great. At times, a bit on the slow side, but I am going to excuse that. First, it was busy, and our server was slammed. Second, he knew it was a special occasion, so I think he was partially playing the role of wing man. He was also very apologetic for not getting to us pronto all of the time. Though, as I said, I think all of it was more circumstantial than anything. So, my only suggestion would be about the wine. It was great. But I had white, and she had red. I had salmon and she had prime rib. The servers should recommend wines based on what entrees guests will order. Partially, it's my fault for not thinking of this until our food came, but then again I didn't know what I wanted for an entree when I ordered my wine. I believe it would lead to a greater dining experience if servers paired whites with fish and reds with meat (with exceptions such as in the choice of chicken). read more

My favorite place to go when I'm back in the San Diego area. I used to live there, but now live in Chicago and make it a point to go and have lunch or dinner whenever I am in town. The view is amazing and the staff and service are superb! Located on the beach you get to enjoy the fabulous pacific ocean while you dine. I highly recommend starting off with the calamari - a classic favorite of many. I ordered the halibut and it was the best halibut I've ever had in my life....SERIOUSLY!! It is usually one of the specials, so if it is...don't pass it up! Don't forget to leave room for dessert. The Hula Pie it unforgettable. Went to go try this place out as a part of SD Restaurant week and was very impressed. The parking isn't ideal but you can't ask for a better scenery as you are right on the beach. I had the burrata with heirloom tomato and albacore crudo(highly recommend) as an appetizer and braised short rib for dinner. The braised short rib was very savory, juicy, and went well with the horseradish mashed potatoes. For dessert they had a special Maple Bacon Tiramisu which was absolutely amazing, not the best tiramisu, but you can't go wrong when you mix anything with bacon. The Hula pie was very good, per usual. Our server, Daniel, was very diligent, nice, and very personable as we had about a 10 minute conversation mid-dinner. All in all a great experience with excellent service, atmosphere, and food. read more

Came here a week ago when my husbands parents were in town and had a great time. Not only is the view gorgeous at sunset but the food is AMAZING.
