Oh boy! I mean I originally wasn't a fan going with larger groups, but it became a wonderful spot for dinners with my hubby. The steaks were big, the plate was full, you got a salad, bread, veggies, all around just fantastic. I know restaurants have to tighten their belt, but we were just there a couple of months ago and going from full meal deal as always to a super sad plate of pre-cut steak and a handful of fries... this is no longer the Jaks we love. Had to come here for a second year of having the Beef Wellington. If you enjoy this dish, I would recommend giving Jak's a try. The beef medallion was good sized and cooked to a perfect medium rare with a nice flakey puff pastry shell and savory beef gravy. Came with asparagus and I chose the baked potato. Place was very busy for the holidays but we were seated quickly due to reservations. Ended up with a good booth in the back which helped with the noise. Server was friendly but a little hard to understand because of a language barrier and also lingered a little long at tables which made the service longer than normal. This place used to be so so good and a bargain compared to the higher-end steak houses in the area. I told all my friends about this place and they and their families and friends became regulars. But like a lot of restaurants after Covid, quality went down despite prices going up. The ribeye here used to be phenomenal--better than any steak I've had at higher end steak houses (El Gaucho/John Howie etc) in the area. That steak was so juicy and tender with a great smoky and fatty flavor. On my last few visits, the steak has been bland and tough (relatively to what a good ribeye normally tastes to me). Based on the menu, they changed their sourcing (previously from Nebraska, now California). Despite that the price went up around 50% The other way the value went down is with their side dishes. Previously any steak came with a potato side (potato pancake here is still pretty good), steamed veggies (the carrots were always amazing), and a side salad. At some point after Covid they made it only a potato and either a side salad or a side veggie. Then it became only a side veggie (carrots no longer an option) or potato. Next I'm sure no sides will be the standard. Maybe I could tolerate the price increase if the quality was what it was before. But I can't tolerate an increase in price while both quality and quantity have decreased. Won't be back read more

It was a special wedding anniversary and we love to go here for them. We have been regulars for about 15 years. Yesterday was the worst experience ever by far. What happened to this place? It was so good for so long. They lost our reservation by canceling it when it should not have been. The lady at the reception was flat out rude and treated me and my wife like very unwelcome interruptions. It was instantly stressful. We said it was our anniversary and would like a booth to celebrate nicely but instead she refused and forced us to sit in the noisiest part while half the place with many booth were empty the entire time we were there. The prices are higher which is true everywhere, but that does not justify the poor treatment and horrible attitude of the staff. Our server was clearly overworked and hard to fault that person. We really don't know if it isn't better just to find a new favorite at this point. JaK's completely ruined what should have been a nice special time with simplicity. Darkly lit, always packed... our special place to go! They have a decent wine selection, but the bartender makes fantastic martinis with the good kind of olives. I think that's a Washington vibe. I personally think you should dress up a little bit for the special place. Yes, yes they are known for their steaks and they are fantastic. But if you're not in the mood for a steak, I will tell you their french dip sandwich and french fries are the bomb. They are sinfully delicious. This is probably my favorite meal on the menu. It is melt in your mouth delicious. Also, I'm not a giant, heavy meat eater, but these are the best burgers in town by far. I don't know how they do it, but their secret recipe is absolutely out of this world sensational. I'm trying not to walk around the earth, eating burgers, but this place is begging me too. Let's talk about the service... we have been coming here for 15 years, and I have never had anything less than exceptional service. These waiters and bartenders are very talented. They are truly on the money... They don't rush you, however, they are highly efficient, highly aware and they leave you alone and let you have a conversation as well. The service is definitely five star. This is probably the best service in town. I've always felt that the hostess stand is a little lacking, however. Saying that I think the hostess at this place has a very difficult job, juggling the waitlist and the crowd and trying to get the tables turned over. I wish they had a hostess that greeted you with a big smile and made you feel like you weren't the next problem walking in the door. However, I'm sure it is an exasperating job dealing with so many people who want to eat here every night. So I get it. For years, this place did not take reservations and you just had to stand in line, sometimes outside. I am so grateful they now take reservations. On super busy nights, we've never had to wait more than 15 minutes... And we usually squeeze into the bar. Yous who follow my reviews know, that as a chef, I'm a tough one to get four or five stars from, but this was an easy four stars! It is a higher end restaurant, more towards fine dining, so you won't go here to get Taco Bell prices. That being said, it's an amazing date night or night out with friends location. They have a full bar and wine by the cup or bottle (if that's ur thing), and the servers seem to be well versed in pairings. The food was excellent, I took a bite of the steak and told my hubby it "made my soul happy"!!! I would definitely go back there for a steak dinner! When you consider what it costs to buy a good, clean, steak and the time you have to take to prepare it and all the trimmings! This was well worth the price! My hubby had the fried chicken sandwich with a house salad. It was a lovely meal and quite well priced. Lovely sourdough bread came with our salads! We were both nearly full by the time our meals came! That's ok, because we both have leftovers to take home for tomorrow! Vanessa was a great server and quite pleasant! She had a beautiful smile, and was helpful in every way. We both look forward to going to Jak's Grill again, and hopefully having Vanessa as our server! The only two things that kept them from having five stars was that it was freezing inside. To be fair we were one of the first few couples to arrive once they opened, so I'm sure once it's filled with people it probably gets a bit warmer. The feel is slightly corporate, but don't let that deter you. As a breakfast place, Jak's rocks! The food is good, the service is good, and it's just plain comfortable. We went on a Sunday morning after an early hike ... the restaurant was just beginning to fill ... it's clear that reservations are a good idea, though we were early enough to be seated without one. We had a crab-cake Benedict (yum, with lots of crab) and great smashed potatoes (roast potatoes, smashed just enough to aid in eating them), and the Baja scramble -- not sure we'd get the standard flour tortillas with these (I'd recommend toast or an English muffin instead), but the scramble was good. we ate here last night with a 7 pm dinner reservation on a Tuesday night. It was far more crowded than we expected! but we were seated right away. Our server came to the table almost when we sat down to give us attention, and then left us to consider the menu. (Unfortunately I did not get his name.) When he returned we had selected two entrees: the 6 oz. filet mignon (medium rare) and the 6 oz. Wagyu bavette (medium rare). I had the bavette because I wanted to try the Wagyu, and my wife had the filet because it is her favorite cut of meat. I also ordered the peppercorn demi-glace. Our salads arrived first. They were cold and well prepared. My wife had the "wedge" salad (which was really just a chopped-wedge salad) and I had the Caesar. The touch of lemon in my salad really highlighted the flavor. Then came our main dish. My bavette was served in slices. The taste was so very good, and the sauce (served on the side in a nice gravy "boat") was tasty and I could put on as much or as little as I wanted. (Note that the cut of the beef means that it's cut along the grain so it has more mouth texture than a steak cut against the grain. The long fibers gave a great mouth feel.) My wife loved the filet. it was perfectly cooked with a nice dark brown crust (not charged) and when cut open there was about an 1/8" line of cooked meat and then the rest of the meat was uniformly a dark pink. Our side dish was a shared order of onion rings. I know. Something so pedestrian! But it was really a perfect note with the meat, increasing the savory-ness of the meat. We took our time and the server came over frequently to make sure that we had no requests and kept our water glasses filled. (I also had a nice glass of Merlot which complemented the meat.) Then we split the dessert - carrot cake. It was not as we expected, being less oily or "moist" but it had a great flavor - a mix of the carrot and pineapple, with an orange creme frosting. The frosting also had orange zest mixed into it so there was a definite high note or orange when tasting the dense richness of the carrot cake. We enjoyed our experience, and while we do not often go to Jak's due to scheduling, we do want to return soon. read more

First, in a 5 tier rating, 3 is average and what you expect whenever you go out. 5 is Superior, with walking on water involved. A 4 is an excellent rating, something to be proud of. This is our second time to Jaks, and even on our anniversary, which says something right there: the place is special and worthy, especially for being so close to home! We showed up without a reservation (our anniversary is midweek and on a whim we moved the celebration forward) on a holiday weekend and they were able to squeeze us in with only about a 10 minute wait. For starters, the Cucumber Mule cocktail is outstanding. Our first time, we had a bunch of competing menu selections. This time it seemed the menu was a bit tighter. Still good. Looking through the starters, we couldn't decide between the Brussels sprouts or the stone fruit and cheese, so we got both. Brussels were the winner even as the fruit was still very good. I had the Steelhead trout, a yummy decent sized piece served with potato pancakes and something else. Wife had the Moroccan Skewers, which was a real winner since it seemed they used filet chunks for the one skewer and the server said sirloin for the other, but even that second skewer meat was a very high quality cut seemingly more premium than sirloin. Minor points lost for a fairly long wait delay for the food, which is OK if we're updated but we weren't, and the starters arriving only a little time before the main. The server recognized this and gave a nice concession There is a nice front section overlooking the newly-completed pedestrian mall, making great seats. The bulk of the building is a windowless hall: comfortable but not anything to rave about. We consider Jak's a newfound favorite for us, and will be returning again. Jak's...what happened?! One of the things you proudly promoted on your menu was "All our portions are large & dinners come complete with a fresh green salad, seasonal veggies, fresh bread, and your chose of potato". I get restaurants have to change with the times, but do you have to completely change who you are?! This has been of our favorite date night restaurant. Good food, good prices, good portions. Or that's what it used to be. It used to always be a wait to get a seat on a weekend night. We made reservations for Friday night at 6pm. While we were there around 7 we noticed a lot of empty tables - maybe they were between dinners? We've been going here for over 10 years (Over 15 years if you include the location by UW). We've sung your praises to everyone over the years. We used to be able to get a full meal for one price. That included bread, salad, huge side of vegetable, potato, and steak. Now we've had to ask for bread the last few times (it's always been served ahead of time, so not sure if they've "forgot" or what but we've had to ask the last few times for it). The vegetable has been removed from the base price and so has the salad. Prices used to be a lot more reasonable, especially since it included everything. I get prices have gone up (from $28 for a NY Steak 11 years ago to $60 for a NY Steak). Now a New York steak is only $12 less than the New York you would get at the Metropolitan Grill - both include a potato side. You used to have a "Jaks size" and a normal size for steaks. Now it is one size only. You must have just removed the artichoke dip as it's still on the website menu but not the menu in restaurant - we always got this! We were looking forward to getting this again. We asked the waitress about it and got a fairly short answer that they don't have it anymore. This set you apart from Melrose for us (since I don't eat seafood) as Melrose doesn't have any appetizers. Now for about the same price you can get a steak, veggie, salad, and potato at Melrose for the same price as your steak and potato. Don't get me wrong, the steak is still great (and whoever seasoned it and cooked it last night did a great job - a lot better than the last few times we went and it was missing some flavor), the service overall is great (our waitress was a bit short but may have been a cultural attitude - everyone else was great), wine options are great. We just miss the value the restaurant used to provide (and the artichoke dip - can you bring this back?!). read more

I was super disappointed in the menu changes. The halibut was always my favorite and I was disappointed that it was no longer on the menu along with some of their other signature items. There is no longer any chicken items on the menu and for people that don't like steak or seafood there aren't a lot of options. We tried JaK's 15 years ago and weren't impressed. Re-tried it again several years ago and were pleasantly surprised. We're big fans of neighborhood steakhouses like JaK's, Melrose Grill, and The Keg (back when those were around). We understand businesses need to operate and costs increase, but as another reviewer mentioned, it feels like you get barely anything for what you pay for now. $60 for a steak and potatoes, no veggie, no salad. To say the $11 caesar salad is a disappointment is an understatement. Tonight we had to ask for bread - they don't just bring it, they don't offer it, you have to ask for it. We've had hit or miss experience with the quality of the food both in the cuts themselves and/or how they're prepared the last few visits. I usually order medium and my husband orders medium-well, yet sometimes his comes out more red than mine. Tonight's service was a huge disappointment. Our waitress must be newer and she was not very good at reading the table (I say this as someone who waited tables). No check on how things were until we were 2/3 the way done with our food and she kept taking my dishes when I was still working on them. Of course then when we're ready to check out, it took several minutes for her to come by despite visiting the tables around us multiple times. So we spent $220 tonight for a dinner for 2 adults & 1 toddler. From here on I think we're going to stick with steaks at home from Costco and when we want something nice then we'll spend a little extra to enjoy something at El Gaucho, Daniel's Broiler, The Met, or even John Howie. Maybe we'll try JaK's again in a few years and hopefully by then they'll have found a sweet spot where customers don't feel like we're paying too much for too little with a mediocre experience. read more

Time for an update after multiple stellar return visits. I get all the hype and love for Jak's now. This place is consistent. Like, every subsequent meal here has been great. Service is fabulous, the food is always good and our steaks are always prepared perfectly. On our last visit, we were notified that they recently changes/updated their menu and concept a bit. In an attempt to elevate their menu, they've added some new menu items (wagyu) and even removed some (halibut). Steaks still come with sides, but it's not just your regular potatoes, carrots and broccoli. You can get mac & cheese, sauteed wild mushrooms, crispy brussels sprouts and grilled asparagus, to name a few. We will definitely continue to dine here whenever that steak craving hits. read more
