It was decent but I've had a whole lot better. The chips and salsa are nice. I like the cilantro in the salsa. It is a good restaurant salsa. I ordered the fajitas mixed with beef and chicken and charro beans. The charro beans lacked salt and seasoning. These are generally my favorite thing at a restaurant and they were just very bland here. The chicken and steak on the fajitas were alright but I could tell them were precooked and reheated. I got my food within 5 minutes of ordering. You can easily tell when chicken has been reheated. The meat also lacked seasoning. Even with all of this it was still good, it could have just easily been better. The flour tortillas were okay. The guacamole and rice were both really good. The service was great and everyone was really friendly. I'd give it another try in case it was an off day. read more

I've been to this restaurant several times because there simply isn't much available in this small town. The restaurant itself is not very clean and the food is mediocre at best. Had a terrible experience here while trying to eat dinner and a table of VERY loud, obnoxious, drunk and vulgar women were dropping F bombs left and right while families with kids are sitting all around them. Meanwhile the staff is sitting around on their phones not handling the situation. I will not be returning. My husband and I frequent this restaurant as often as we can. Servers can be bad sometimes but usually we get good service. I haven't had the issue of severs not speaking English. When restaurant is full the kitchen takes a little longer to get food out, which is expected due to the size of the restaurant. We usually order enchiladas, quesadillas, and my husband gets the pastor tacos. All of which is always amazing. The salsa is great also, hot but not overwhelming. We were tired from our road trip and checked in at the Holiday Inn Express next door. Starving, we looked at the McDonald's and Jalisco Mexican restaurant and said, "It can't be worse than McDonald's." WOW were we surprised. The Margaritas, queso, fajitas and tacos were all terrific. The refried beans were also good. I don't usually eat the beans but these were great. I would skip the rice though. We ordered frozen margaritas because we were skeptical and they were better than most restaurants we have visited. The fajitas were smaller strips than normal but the taste was great. I'm a little surprised it is not rated higher. Everything including the service was great. Tips to management, put macaroni and cheese on your kids menu and use your queso as the sauce. The queso is more bechemel and not straight up queso but it actually works for both. I promise the kiddos wanting something else will love the mac n queso! Also, cut out the refill charge. Is $.50 really worth upsetting your customers? Good luck...these Houstonians really enjoyed the dinner. read more

Well when you get to Elgin and you're not in the mood for sausage, there's a quaint little Mexican place right behind McDonald's called Jalisco. It's not Chuy's, but hey at least they still have a soul. Very nice people with good food that is afford-ably priced. There's not a lot to say about it except that their salsa is out of this world - you can buy it to go and we've even taken it to family outings and it disappears very quickly. I drive through Elgin quite a bit so I try to find some good *local* food... not Taco Bell. I ate here a few months ago for lunch and I remember the meal being so-so. After finding out that Maxine's closed down, options were limited and decided to stop here for breakfast for the first time. I wish we hadn't. We got there around 9:45am on a Sunday, just two of us. Before my ass was adjusted in the booth, salsa was brought to the table. Without chips. And we never got chips. Ever. Really? Giving a table a bowl of salsa without chips like giving a table a bowl of butter without the bread. I noticed other tables had chips.... so what the hell? We ordered. He got the "Bastrop breakfast", I got the migas plate, no beans. (I'm a vegetarian and their beans are not.) Coffee comes out, very watered down and almost flavorless. Order comes out about 15 minutes later and there's bacon on my plate. Before it was barely off the tray, I sent it back telling him no bacon. He left with both meals. Less than 2 minutes later, our waitress comes back with our meals... and attempts to hand me the same goddamned plate! Again, I told her NO bacon and sent it back a second time! Then I asked her if 'bacon' was on the menu for the migas plate thinking maybe I overlooked that and failed to tell them no bacon either... she said yes. (Which it was not on the menu as part of the plate... I double-checked as we were walking out the door, so she lied... or doesn't understand basic English. Who knows.) Finally my food arrives, no bacon, no beans. Good. Or not. Welp, it was semi-warm. The potatoes were terrible and my food was barely warm, lacking in flavor or any spice, so I smothered the eggs with the cold salsa mentioned above. I had to ask for my tortillas a few minutes later... which should have come with my meal. My guy's plate was just as lacking of flavor, stating that everything tasted the same, very dry scrambled eggs. I will never be back. This was one of the strangest dining experiences I've had and it's almost as if it was a "hell, they're white, they won't know the difference!" attitude. The staff were polite, but seemed unconcerned for the sub-par dining experience in their establishment. I've been eating Tex-Mex my entire life; kinda unavoidable when you're born in Harlingen and have lived here your entire life... I know what to expect. Migas are my benchmark for a sit-down Tex-Mex breakfast, yet they succeeded to fuck that up on something so simple. This sucked. I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt by trying them a second time thinking a simple breakfast would be alright. Sending back a plate TWICE for the same issue regarding an ingredient that isn't even listed as part of that meal on the menu?? No excuse. None. read more

Jalisco is average, and it's comparable to the other Tex-Mex places that are around. There's ample parking, lots of seating, and they have (bad) karaoke nights. Their happy hour is pretty generous and house margaritas are $1.99. The thing that makes it two stars rather than three is because the service is just awful. The servers are nice enough, but the waiting is just unnecessary, and to make matters worse, the servers sit down in plain view of the guests in a group at another table. At least when they're out of sight I can imagine they're busy. When I can see them sitting there talking to one another and I'm waiting for a check or a refill this is frustrating. If you're hungry, on 290 and looking for "fine". This will fit the bill - I just hope you're not in a hurry. read more

I was a little hesitant, having read the reviews before I went, but on the recommendation of a friend, we tried it, and I'm so glad we did. I haven't tried the other restaurants in Elgin to compare, but certainly have eaten my share of Tex-Mex elsewhere. For starters, the first time we went, they had the $1.99 margarita special. The ritas were maybe a little small, but tasty, strong, and clearly made fresh, not from a mix. Chips were fresh and crispy, and their salsa is fantastic (for an extra treat, ask them to bring you some salsa verde too -- they have that nice creamy style). I had shrimp diablo, which were big, tender and spicy. My wife had some kind of plate with a taco and a cheese enchilada...I dunno, she was happy with it. :-) Their beans are terrific, and the little bit of guacamole was good and the diced tomatoes very fresh and flavorful. I especially liked the little bit of nopalitos (cactus) that came with mine -- I now order it as a side sometimes. Since then, we've been back several times, including breakfast (both sit-down and tacos to go). Omelets -- Fantastic! Just the way I like them - very thin egg layer, with ample filling. Pancakes -- Excellent. Nice and fluffy. Migas -- Perfect. I get mine with a side of chorizo, which is generous and nicely browned/drained so it's not too fatty. Huevos a la Mexicana -- My wife's favorite. Tacos -- Tortillas seem hand-made -- not 100% sure. They're not quite as nutty as I'm used to for freshly hand-made, but they also seem a lot fresher than store-bought. I prefer my breakfast tacos w/ no egg (I know, weird, right?), and I've been very happy with their beef fajitas, barbacoa, and chorizo/potato/cheese. Those aren't on their breakfast menu -- just ask. My wife had huevos a la Mexicana tacos -- those didn't survive the 15-minute drive home so well -- kind of steamed in the aluminum foil. That's not on the restaurant -- just reality. Oh -- and the tacos are less than $2 each, which is great. Dessert -- Awesome! The tres leches and the flan are both terrific. Service has been good every time -- not always overly friendly, but very competent and timely. I'll try to make the rounds of the other Mexican restaurants in town (why does a town of 8,000 people have like 10 Mexican restaurants??), but for now, I'm a regular at Jalisco. read more

My husband and I went here for a nice dinner Sunday May 29. 2022. We placed an order for drinks and got those and chips fine. When are drinks came, we place our dinner order. After and hour went by and nobody came back to deliver our food or check on us. I flagged down a waitress. By this time the resturant was crowded. I told her that we had been waiting one hour for our order and wanted to know how much longer it would be. We were already done for a while with our drinks and chips. A little while later another waitress came over and told us that she was the manager and she was sorry but our ticket had fallen on the floor ( NOBODY NOTICED?) so then why is it nobody even bothered to check our table during the entire hour? I asked her for the name of our waitress and why she never checked on our food. She said her name was Mia and that she was in the powder room. Ok I'm calling BS. The manager apologised many times and she gave us are meal at no charge and had the kitchen do a rush order. We didn't want a free meal we wanted good service. By this time I wanted to just pay for our two drinks and leave. My husband was hungry and wanted to stay. This cause tension between us of course. This nice dinner out tonight turned out to be a big disappoinment because of the poor service and explanation we received from the manager. We will NEVER eat at this resturant again. I plan to contact the owner so he knows what is happening in his resturant. The manager only gave me his first name and no contact information. I was able to Google it. read more

Went in on a moderately busy night I was very patient at the fact that our waiter took a long time to ask us for our order. Went to the restroom with my daughter and as we came back our table had been cleared out of our drinks, chips, and my daughters book. A group of four was sitting at our booth. A lady had came from the back with our food and looked puzzled. My waiter seemed distracted so I asked her what was going on and she anxiously answered with suggesting I sit at a different table with no answer as to what was going on. So, I asked them to put our food to go so we could leave. They still wanted to charge me for the drink they cleared from my table. I had them correct it. I will not eat here anymore because of the unorganized and unapologetic staff. The food was definitely not even worth the wait or the trouble I had to go through. This is our go to place when we are hungry and want something wonderful and fresh. I lived in El Paso for 30 years and Jaliscos Chips and Salsa are as good or better then any I have ever had and they will refill my salsa as one bowl is NEVER ENOUGH, Not saying they scrimp. More that I cannot get enough. My daughter and I are hooked on the steak Fajitas. The pepers and onions are so bright and flavorful along with the marinated skirt steak. The service for 2 is always more then we can finish and LORD KNOWS , WE TRY. What ever left over makes it home gets fought over.We eat there so much the staff barely has to ask what we want so we mix it up by adding the steak Nachos or an enchilada plate now and again. I come here with my infant son because he likes the music they play (it calms him and puts him to sleep). I also bring my laptop and work here sometimes because the Wifi is fast. Absolutely no complaints. The food was great. I was with a "regular" and he knew the staff and they were extremely kind and welcoming. He swears by the Mexican Martini. I had a carne asada burrito and the meat was marinated perfectly and was delicious. I was told that yes it can get loud in there especially on karaoke night but we were there at 5:30 pm on a Saturday night and there was absolutely nothing wrong with the atmosphere. I like this place. It isn't the best food anywhere, but its pretty good and the prices are reasonable. The steak ranchero is delicious, they know how to put together a good menudo, and the lengua tacos are some of the best I have ever had. If you find yourself in the Elgin area and are in need of some Mexican food, go here.
