It's been awhile since I've visited Jamaican Kitchen because we live so far. With that being said we were in the mood for some good Jamaican food so we took the 45 min drive (one way) to get the best South FL has to offer. As always Jamaican Kitchen did not disappoint!!!!. My wife had the curry chicken which she says was great (but didn't let me have a taste ). I ordered two dishes...yes two...one to eat there and one to taste and take home. I ordered the Curry Oxtail and Stew Peas lunch size. I'll start with the stew peas...the pig tails were tender and unlike most restaurants..the peas weren't salty which is a plus. I took a few bites and packaged it for home. The Curry Oxtails were simply delicious and like always cooked to perfection. Unlike some restaurants where you get a few tender pieces and some tough....these were fall of the bone tender. The Curry flavor along with seasoning used set this dish apart from other restaurants. I've been coming here for years. If you've never tried Jamaican food, this is the place to do it. I haven't had anything I haven't liked. The Patties are a must. The mild beef is the perfect start to any meal. The brown stew chicken is amazing. You can also go more adventurous with the goat or oxtail, which are also great. Having been featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives I expected more... I ordered off of Yelp thinking I would save time as we were going to drive from Miami to Orlando, but the mark up to be able to order on Yelp for take out is ridiculous. Since most items are premade as they are stews, I recommend walking in to order. For 3 plates, I got upcharged over $17 for using the Yelp app to order for pick up. $53.15 before tax for pre-ordering on Yelp then I added a 15% tip on that. For me to learn that it would have been $36.50 before tax had I waited til I got there to order. Then I remembered I also wanted meat pies after I already placed the order and wanted those too creating a second order. I expected a small service fee for using Yelp to order for convenience but being upcharged that much is a shame really. I've ordered off Yelp before, the upcharge was not that significant. So I don't believe it was Yelp that made it that high. Food is 1 - 4 stars, depending on the item. Meat patties- I got the jerk chicken, spicy Jamaican Beef Pattie and curry chicken. I liked all of them. Particularly the jerk chicken and spicy beef ones. Pastry used as the pocket is semi flaky. 4 stars. I ordered the Oxtail Stew lunch. It's good. 4 stars. Tender and flavorful. Not the best I've had though. It wasn't spicy at all, which I was expecting bc of the first Jamaican oxtail dish I've had was spicy (from a different restaurant). So I was a little disappointed. The fried plantains (1 star) that came with I didn't care for. It tasted like it was fried in old oil. I could taste that rancid oil flavor on it. Rice and beans was decent. Plate as a whole.. 3 stars. My son's Curry Chicken plate was good. Chicken was tender and flavorful. 4 stars. If I were to go back, I would only order the meat pies. Food is always really good. My son and I were so hungry besides placing our order we had to have their homemade pattis. Spicy beef was our initial choice and then my son tried the curry chicken and it was amazing. We had the lunch oxtail with peas and rice and slaw. When you have the craving you just need to get it satisfied and they did not disappoint. We never took pictures but trust the food is great. It's not the type of place you'd sit and eat in but more of an order and go. So many traditional Jamican food options to choose from as well as drinks and seasonings for sale. We tried the jerk chicken chicken of course. You can get a lunch or dinner portion with rice and peas and steamed cabbage or sweet plantains. We had the dinner portion. The chicken and rice and peas were good and plentiful. The only thing was we were looking for a more of the jerk flavoring and maybe even with some heat/spice. Man listen here! I have 3 other reviews to write out but they can wait a bit longer because I had to write this one first! Today after having a long 9 hour day at work, I decided to treat myself. I knew I was going to come here today because where I ended up working. That's besides the point, when I say this place is one of the best places for Jamaican food, I mean that. It's a Jamaican Chinese establishment. I knew about this place eons ago when I was watching Guy Fiery's Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and I had it on my bucket list ever since. I tried it about a year ago, and my first dish that I ordered from here was Jerk Chicken with rice and pie and a couple of Jamaican patties. Today was my 2nd time here. I don't live near that area at all so it was a treat for me. I ended up ordering, two orders of Jerk Pork fried rice, two mild beef patties, one spicy beef patty and one cheesy beef patty. I had to wait quite a bit for my order because they literally had to make my food from scratch, which I gladly waited for and I'll do it again damn it! One of the cashiers was very nice, he offered me a free patty for waiting so patiently and I appreciated it a lot. He was friendly to all customers that walked into the establishment. Back to the Jerk Fried Rice, I see why it took a while for me to get, a dish like that is worth waiting for, when I finally got home I inhaled that rice, I was the most delicious thing I've had to date. The guy that did it, did an amazing job. It had a tiny bit of spice to it, if you're afraid of spicy food of any level this is not for you. This is a DDD (Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives) restaurant, which disappointed me in regards to flavor. Every worker that I came in contact was friendly and helpful. Seating is limited, but we were able to grab a table directly outside of the restaurant. The prices were fair and our food was prepared rather quickly. Here's what we ordered: -Stew Oxtails with rice and peas/beans: The oxtails were ok, but not enough spice or seasoning. The rice and peas were bland. -Jerk Chicken: Was extremely light on the jerk seasoning and again, the rice and peas were bland. -Spicy Beef Jamaican Patty: Noted by a red dot on the outside of the patty. This wasn't spicy at all. Not a hint of spiciness. We both agreed that the outside of the pastry was the best part as it was nice and flaky, but the inside was lacking flavor and spice. Here's What I Think... I spoke with a Jamaican local and asked what he likes here and he didn't name anything we had except he did say that the jerk chicken is ok. He had ordered the Ackee & Saltfish and the Brown Stew Chicken. He said that he also really loves the Brown Stew Fish. So, the next time I'm in Miami, I would try the Ackee & Saltfish or the Brown Stew Fish. read more
