I been coming to this spot for some years now. Over the years they have added more authentic Jamaican choices to their menu. Usually go for the chicken soup and fruiti tuti cakes lol. Because I enjoy Jamaican food and have experience most of the Jamaican establishments in the DC metro area, I wanted to try this location. I finally went, I order jerk chicken meal. I placed my order over the phone, and I was greeted by warm and welcoming customer service upon my arrival. My order was ready upon walking in, and I checked out with ease. Now onto the deliciousness! I ordered a Small Jerk Wing platter, and I also grabbed a homemade pineapple ginger juice! When I got home I was so excited and ready to dig in! Upon opening the jerk wing platter I was delighted at how generous the restaurant was with the portions! I drizzled some pepper sauce over the food that I asked for on the side, and took my first bite into the wings and WOO LAWD!!! My eyes lit up like a Las Vegas slot machine!!! The jerk seasoning coupled with the grill char of the wings was enough to make me want to jump for joy! The sweetness of the plantains, coupled with the crunchy texture of the cabbage, as well as the delicious comfort of the rice and peas!!! One of my favorite spots to stop for lunch after I get my nails done. Usually there's a line but today it was just me. I had a lovely conversation with the cashier, who I believe is also one of the cooks & possibly an owner, about some of the menu items I wasn't familiar with. She schooled me on fish fritters, boiled dumplings with potatoes & yams, & fried fritters. I really enjoyed the exchange. For my meal, I got stewed chicken lunch special. I've had the curry chicken before so I know that's good. This was my first time trying the stewed chicken. In my mind, I'm trying to determine if I like it more than or equal to the curry chicken. Today I went here and bought the stew chicken dinner with plantains, rice and peas and cabbage. The staff were friendly and greeted me when I first walked in. It is nicely lit inside and the food was displayed so you can see what options are available. I looked at the food and it didn't look appealing, but I said I'll give this place a try since I am on the hunt for finding a Jamaican food restaurant in the DM area that I like. I ordered the stew chicken dinner and it was not all that tasty. The chicken was lacking salt, the rice and peas were ok, but the plantains were dry and the cabbage wasn't seasoned well. I am so irritated at this travesty of a Jamaican spot. First off I called and said I just wanted a piece of fried red snapper, some cabbage and instead of fried plantain (which were sweet), I asked for provision (which is usually boiled green banana and some root vegetables). I get there not long later to pick up my order, and the older lady opens the container and shows me fish with peppers and onions on the top. Before I even said anything she said she could remove the peppers if I didn't want them. Frankly, this was someone else's order that she passed off on me - because how do you just decide to give me escovich fish when I ordered on fried red snapper?? She proceeded to tell me she could remove the peppers and add brown stew sauce. How in the WORLD did she think I was NOT going to know that escovich has a tangy marinade that would not have been covered up by brown stew sauce. When I paid my food was $60 for the fish I ordered, an order of cabbage, one plain fried red snapper for my daughter (which is exactly what I ordered for myself - $17) and a quart of grape nut ice cream. Instead of replacing the fried plantain with just one green banana - which would be the logical thing to do for a customer, I happened to see the receipt as it was printing and I was charged for 2 green bananas - because she decided I needed two bananas instead of one - because it put more money in her pocket. So my fish order was $10 more than my daughter's plain fried and I called her back to ask why (because I paid extra for the "provision" so all that was left was cabbage. She said that's the price for the fish. So you mean to tell me that a side order or cabbage is $10??? She had the opportunity to provide me with all of the information when I called to ask. Perhaps she thought because of my non-Caribbean accent she could play me, On top of all of this, th fish wasn't fresh - it was dry and hard (which is probably why she threw the sauce on without m asking. I don't like to post bad reviews if things aren't terrible. The food wasn't terrible but it was just sooooo bland. No flavor. No taste. We tried the curry goat and jerk salmon. Both were just ridiculously bland. We've had lots of curried dishes both in the states and throughout the Caribbean including Jamaica. This was so bland. Not bad but bland. My biggest pet peeve is when restaurants thi k making super spicy food makes it Jamaican. This didn't have any heat at all. Hardly any salt. Again not a bad taste just no real taste at all. The oxtail was much too fatty and the meat portions were small. The meat was also overcooked and tough to chew. Similar to the truck, the rice and peas and other sides were not very good. (After being right here over a dozen times) I'm not about the review stating rude service, bad food ..etc...but I ordered the oxtail meal large and it was during lunch hours in which those deals were amazing. But I had to plan my meal accordingly. The food after splitting it up was delicious. All this just for me...at least a couple meals. I was amazed with the portion size with everything. Why, why, why JCC???? I want to support my people soooo badly but they consistently make it hard for a sister. I've been here more than a dozen times but decided to hold off on doing a review because the service is always inconsistent. Nonetheless, I am always supportive of small businesses and will gladly spend my hard earned money on any place that has good food and a half-way decent experience. What I have enjoyed previously: the curry goat (very well seasoned), curry chicken (somebody finally got the message and decided to season it) and their beef patties which has an authentic taste and great crust. What I'll pass on: Ackee and salt fish (no flavor) and cakes (tastes like it's been sitting around for a while). What I'll give another shot: oxtail was pretty ok but the portion size left me wanting more. This last experience has me questioning if I will ever go back. I never expect outstanding service in any mom and pop Jamaican spot because "we" just don't know how to give top flight service -- in most cases. There's a certain expectation you'll get attitude and some teeth sucking but overall we mean no harm. And yes, I can say this as a true Jamaican who has frequented many a Jamaican mom and pops. I'm all for giving leeway but when people are down right rude, it's a bit much. On my last visit the girl at the counter gave me attitude out the gate and i don't know why since I greeted her instead of the other way around. I ask for the curry goat lunch special with white rice (a delicious deal at $6.99) and in response I get, "No white rice." Whotf runs out of white rice????? There's a whole country dedicated to making sure the world never runs out of white rice. But I digress ... So I order the jerk chicken with rice and peas begrudgingly (but wait, don't you need WHITE rice to make rice and peas???. OK. Nevermind ...I digress again). Fyi, Ms Attitude wasn't nice to me but was a lot nicer to my dude when he asked her a question. No sweat. I just chock that up to that old woman-on-woman hatin' BS we gotta deal with sometimes. So my food comes out and Angry Bird asks if I want jerk sauce on my chicken. Since I'd never had their jerk chicken I asked her to put it on the side. The sauce is in one of those red squeezable plastic containers ketchup usually comes in. She tells me they have no lids for the containers and I'm like "no problem, we're eating in so I don't need one." Then she starts to hem and haw about how she'd have to put it in a big cup and blah, blah, blah. I'm thinking, dam woman, just put some sauce in a container already! She made such a production I just told her to not to worry about it. I go to sit down and realize the jerk is dry as the Sahara so I go back to the counter to have them put the sauce on the chicken after all. Angry Bird is sitting down in the back and when she sees me, she does this hand motion like she's brushing me off, snarls like a dog, rolls her eyes and tells the other lady to go help me. Ummmm, okkk ... So the older lady comes back out with the sauce and I ask if I can put it on the chicken myself. No, she says. She has to do it. Huh?? Really? There's a mandate that doesn't allow people to pour their own sauce on their own food? Ummmmm, okkk ... By this point I'm irritated but decided to try to enjoy my food. Well a picture is worth a thousand words so I'll wrap up my review here. Let's just say my jerk chicken was inedible and my bf had to take it back. The older lady offered him some fresh chicken but that came out half cold and half warm. At this point I just gave up and feasted on my non-white rice and peas. Patience is a requirement if you decide to try this spot. They're so hit or miss I can only give them credit for trying. But good luck to them. Should I ever be in the mood for a whole lot of attitude with a side of piss poor service, I'll definitely go back. read more

Preface: My fiance is Jamaican, and I've spent countless years hanging out in his family's kitchens. So I'd like to say I'm an authority on good, AUTHENTIC Jamaican cuisine. That's all to say that this place is the real deal Holyfield. The Jerk seasonings will burn your lips off if you aren't careful, but is flavorful enough to stand on its own merits without it. I don't know if they've got a grill back there or what, but it's got that good Char-broiled taste that you can ONLY get from real Jerk Chicken. They've also got a bunch of traditional fare, Ackee and Saltfish, four different kinds of porridge...Cow Foot(?!). They've got it. Future Hubby had Jerk Pork, which was just as good (though I preferred the Chicken). Rice and Beans were decent and the mixed veggies were AMAZING. Also had a glass of homemade Sorrel, it was the BUSINESS. Hands down best Jamaican Food in the area that isn't coming from Mom's kitchen. Something about an unswept floor made me think twice about ordering. Anywho, it was 2:50 p so I decided to try the jerk chx lunch special and fruit punch. There is nothing fruity about this fruit punch. It simply tastes like ice cold sugary syrup & water. That's it. If you want good, real Caribbean fruit punch, try Negril Eatery. The "special" included what looked like 1/2 thigh, 1/2 drumstick cut up. There was barely any meat. Man, I wish I would have taken pics. I can't really tell you how it tastes because I didn't receive an adequate portion of chicken to say. :(. Major disappointment. The rice & peas were ok... Dry, but ok. Veggies... Cabbage, broccoli mix were crisp and AWESOME! This was the best part of my "meal". It came with 3 of the tiniest, skinniest plantain I have ever seen. Hands down the best "authentic" Jamaican restaurant in town! I moved to this area from Brooklyn New York in the late 90's and I have searched for Jamaican food that is close to or the same as the food I had when in NYC with no success. Red stew peas with pig tails and white rice - my best dish there, they only do it from Fri-Sun I was told. This dish taste the way my aunt used to make it. They must have Jamaican/Panamanian roots. Curry Goat with rice and peas - delicious Jerk Chicken - this is my partners favorite, very tasty and spicy just like the ones in NY in the big smokers. The customer service is average which is what you get usually at Jamaican establishments. It just is the culture to have B face in my opinion but I got to know the two ladies behind the counter and there quite pleasant to me now. The only reason I would give this place one less star is the beef patties. I typically try the restaurants beef patties and that is an indication if they really put their elbows into their food. The beef patties at this place are the typical frozen unfrozen patties. I only found one place in Maryland that "use to" make homemade beef patties which they brought in from a lady in Columbia Maryland daily. That place was Montego Bay on Rogers Ave in Baltimore. Unfortunately, they started using frozen patties a couple years back so I would not run there to try them. I love this place! They open early which is awesome for Ppl in my occupation. The staff is cool and are very friendly. I've had pretty much everything on the menu from jerk chicken to curry goat. My favorite tho, is brown stew chicken with rice and peas. The prices for the prices for the lunch specials are reasonable.
