James gave me a Brazilian Blowout & a trim & I'm really happy with the results. I always love my hair after a BB & I LOVE the trim he gave me. My last cut by another stylist was about a "D-" & I'm so happy James shaped it up & gave me an "A+" trim. The salon is small & cute tucked into Westcliff Plaza. He was also playing some great '80's tunes and not at an ear splitting decibel. After you get your hair done you can wander over to Haute Cakes, the Red Balloon and the other great boutiques in this plaza. Getting my hair done always puts me in a good mood & I drove down 17th Street & hit up a few other boutiques & spent some money. For those of you who have never shopped or driven down 17th Street it's full of great boutiques, hair salons and restaurants. Years ago my hubs and I lived in Newport Heights & 17th Street has undergone a huge makeover since we lived there. So tired of reading negative reviews, so here's mine to counter them all... I first heard about the James Albert Salon at a Newport Harbor High School Awards ceremony because he offered 2 scholarships for graduating seniors. That award including a basket of high-end hair products and free hair services while the student was in college. That would have been a dream in my low budget college days! What I appreciate about this salon - They're VERY good yet not showy about it. There is no a la carte pricing for each individual treatment (low lights, high lights, eyebrows, etc.). For $120, you get whatever services you need for amazing cut and color. James has a Chemist background, which gives him expertise to create his own products and knowing exactly which color blend works well for your hair type and skin complexion. He is by far the fastest stylist to do color too. I was nervous at his speed at first but am always grateful to not have to spend the entire day at the salon for each appointment. Another stylist (Juls?) is so personable and sincere that it makes me feel like I'm talking to an older sister. Her background was at a prestigious salon in Europe that it's an honor to have her work at this salon too. On one visit, I watched her style a wig for a cancer patient friend with such care and attention that it was as if the client was in the chair too. All in all, the history of the James Albert Salon is that they had various schools throughout Orange County as well. Although they have returned to their roots of one main salon, you can tell that James still instills education in all his stylists, treats everyone professionally, and maintains a clean work space. Appointment with James Albert. Asked him for lighter blond highlights all around. Also, specified that if the only way to achieve the blond is by bleaching my hair then I do NOT want to do it! James Response: "don't worry, I'll make you pretty" If you ever hear any variation of this phrase, just RUN from him!! But hopefully you will reconsider even going after my review. James proceeded to foil my hair and apply color as he said. After he stepped away I asked his Persian assistant - "is this color or bleach??!!!" and she refused to respond to me. This whole experience is way too long to type in as a review but my next day pictures stand as proof of what James Albert did with my hair!! I also had two witnesses with me. Check the pictures under this salon. James is the biggest scam artist and doesn't know Jack about hair. Moreover, because he over processed my hair it is now damaged, dry and brittle. I have spent over $200 on hair repairing products alone just to sustain my hair and not cut it all off. That's in addition to what I had to spend in order to fix what he did, since the trust was already gone and I would never let him touch my hair again! NOT a ton of product scattered over the stations, wall length mirrors, smelled very good & fruity, James' own products! **Facial & Micro-dermabrasion w/Sue: normally $70ish. OMG can you say HEAVEN!!!!!! The room is large & VERY clean, table is not bunched up in the corner & a little vanity for purses, lots of room for Sue to maneuver & atmosphere was GRAND. Sue's been there 15 years, gentle & nice, soft voice. Spoke slowly & calmly as her amazing fingers did their magic & the products smelled awesome! 1-hour FLEW! Tip $12 (which I hope was ok for this salon). I didn't hear the music and goings-on of the hair salon section, wasn't interrupted by phones & people 'popping in' to tell her this or that. IT WAS VERY NICE and worth the regular price! ***Hair - Wash/Cut/Dry/Style with Sam (Sami) - normally $70'ish She reminds me of Pink! I'm not quite as adventuorous as she is so I opted for a little off, some layers, and a flat blow dry instead of a straightener. She did a FANTASTIC job on the shampoo/scalp massage and hair cut and a SUPER AMAZING job at blowing out my hair to straighter than any flat iron. I was in between cuts and too impatient to wait to get in to my regular stylist so I called James Albert salon on August 13th to see if I could get in that afternoon. I'd been to the salon before many years ago and remembered it being large and busy. They were able to get me in that day with the owner, James Albert himself! I was excited!! When I arrived I noticed the salon had actually moved, and shrunk to about 1/4 or 1/2 of the original size. There were no other customers there - just James, and two other employees. This should have been a sign... I showed James photos of cuts I liked and he said my hair was too short to do those styles...ok, fine. He talked to me about what would work and got started. We were going to do a slight angled cut at short/medium length. We went to the sink, where I had no cape, towel, anything to keep me dry while he washed my hair. I got wet, and continued to do so while he brushed my hair out back at the chair. Dripping water everywhere! The cut was extremely fast - like 30 minutes tops. He was like Edward Scissorhands with the scissors and I was really nervous, but trusted he knew what he was doing. About halfway through I finally got a cape on but it wasn't properly closed in the back until the woman working there came over and closed it up. (Side note - the employees there were painting the walls?!). Even though the pictures I showed him showed super straight styles with no curl and I told him I liked super straight, he blew it out with a crazy under curl that did not look good at all. I looked like an old lady! The layers were SUPER short (did not ask for layers) and very choppy. I smiled, paid, and darted to my car. I was COVERED in hair due to not having a cape on properly. As soon as I got home I straightened my hair and didn't think it looked too bad...until I saw the random layers in the back that were ridiculously short. They were square cut which didn't really go with the angle cut I was trying to get. And I had to shower due to bits of hair stuck in my clothes and glued to my neck and back. I realize I should have spoken up and been more assertive during the cut, but I trusted that as the owner of a business he would know what he was doing. I'm not sure why the salon has significantly downsized or what drama is going on there, but I will not return and will definitely not recommend it to any of my friends (enemies maybe...). I made my appointment with Juli and I had a ScreaminDailyDeal. I told her over the phone what the deal included (cut and highlights). Set the appointment but due to circumstances at work, I wasn't going to make the appointment. I called her and told her that I would be 45 minutes late and if it's better to reschedule. She was really sweet and told me to come on over! I arrived at the salon and only one other client was there. James Albert himself was there too. He was really friendly and funny. Juli greeted me at the door with an amazing smile and she's really down-to-earth. I told her I've never had my hair colored before and I'm in the process of interviewing for work so whatever she'll do to my hair can't be too wild (I work in admin.). She suggested that I add "Toner" to my hair because color tends to show up orange in dark Asian hair. It was only $20 and I didn't want to interview with orange hair so I agreed. I told her she can do whatever she wants with my hair. I have straight, Asian hair, done in a graduated bob that's starting to grow out and look messy. My hair tends to be very limp and flat too, so I wanted a bit more volume. Juli ended up highlighting my hair in a hint of deep red, it doesn't show up very well until the light shines on my hair. Some parts of my hair looks lighter than others (brownish) but the top of the hair looks more deep red. She did a longer graduated bob, trimming my old hair but she shortened the back and layered the top to give it more volume. I really LOVE what she did to my hair! I feel so polished and the color is there without screaming "color," just what I wanted. I will be back to Juli! She has a great personality as well, very friendly and warm. Some Yelp reviewers warned about possible tip issues and upselling, so I was a bit concerned coming in but there was no such thing with Juli! I'm really glad she mentioned the extra "Toner" for my hair, and I appreciated that she put products in my hair and asked if I needed any but when I said no, she simply puts them away. Made an appointment after i purchased the Living Social deal for cut and partial highlights/single color for only $39!!! Usually I am paying $160 for cut and color so I couldn't beat/miss this deal! Made an appointment on a Monday and got Alexis. She is very sweet and meticulous about her work. I wanted blonde peek a boo chunks so I could dye them green when I head to Miami in March (yes I am CRAZY!). She gave me 5 huge chunks, I would have preferred them smaller, but I guess they will look different and better when I dye them green. She thinned my hair out as much as possible and it is STILL big. I guess I just have too much damn hair. :/ Anyone know if any hair thinning places?! I also got a great deal on the shampoo and conditioners!!!! I bought two 33 oz bottles for only $20 bucks. They're regularly $20 a pop! Apparently the machine that pumps the shampoos into the bottles malfunctioned and there are some partially filled shampoo bottles. So instead of throwing them away or going through the hassle of emptying the random defected shampoo bottles, he sold 2 for the price of one. Luckily...i got a FULL tea tree shampoo bottle! Hurrah! This owner is terrible. He stands in the parking lot of his business screening customers telling them they can't park in the lot. It's a very off putting greeting. I was looking for a place to balayage my hair and there's also a super cute design studio upstairs in this building that I love using for my home. I will not be coming here in the future. Take your business elsewhere so you don't get harassed trying to get your hair done. I won't recommend a business until I experience myself. WHAT A GEM! Tucked away in the Westcliff Court in Newport Beach, I have found my stylist! Nicole was AMAZING, professional and friendly. She was genuinely interested in my hair and look and took the time to recommend steps I should take to improve the health of my hair. In fact, I added the hair color (matte brown), which is a gorgeous selection. It's been too long since I took care of my hair. I will definitely go back to this salon and get other services in addition to having Nicole take care of my locks. I live in Lake Elsinore, so it's about a 57 mile drive for me...but worth it! I came here for my prom hair style because of the cheap price... well I sure made the biggest mistake on that. I wanted to get an updo and he did what he did but literally he left all the pins out on my hair EVERYWHERE! I was very confused and he told me it's because I have the thick and long hair so he had to leave the pins. My head was so loose and unstable and so Ugly! Thankfully I had an appointment for my makeup and that person fixed my hair beautifully. Another thing was that He charged me $50 for the tip which I gave him $5 in cash. I called him right away and the first thing he said to me was "NO that's not possible" like?! I see my bank statement right in front of my face and I see that I got charged. Very rude. He couldn't figure out the system the second time I went to the store so he just got upset and gave me all cash which I really don't mind. WORST EXPERIENCE I'VE EVER HAD When I got there I told the stylist what I wanted done. He convinced me to do something else I was skeptical and did not want to do it but he showed me a picture that I liked. I told him I did not want something extreme because I had a photo shoot the next day. He went on to tell me how bad I looked now and that boys aren't interested in me because of my horrible hair and said "You're okay looking, but you were a brunette you'd actually be good looking"(Seriously...) Never a good sign when a stylist says... oh no, how long has this dye been in here? My hair turned out horrible. I am a blonde and he died my hair with huge brown streaks in the front like a skunk. I did not like it, but he convinced me that it looked good but when I got home I realized how bad it really was. It looked NOTHING like the picture he had showed me and it was not what I asked for at all. I rescheduled my photo shoot two days later so I could fix it. I went to Adiana's Salon in Orange and they fixed all the damage he did. To make matters worse. I texted the stylist (because the shop had closed) and asked him if he could fix it and that I was kind of panicking about how it looked. He told me "Panicking about a master piece that was created today. Are you for real" and then he stopped responding to me. They would not return my money or fix what they did. After 7 years of being a loyal customer I just had a truly shocking and awful experience at James Albert Salon. I bought a $39 certificate (value $140) through Screamin Daily Deals in February, for a cut, single process color or partial highlights and blow dry at James Albert Salon. I called to make an appointment and learned that my favorite stylists permanently left the salon. As a result, I was scheduled in April with a new young stylist named Katie. I just came in for a single process color and quickly realized that Katie not only was inexperienced but also immature with a big chip on the shoulder. Towards the end of the application, I made some suggestions to her about the 'crown' area to make sure that it will be covered. You, Ladies out there, know what I am talking about. She disappeared and simply left me unattended. After a while, James, THE boss came to me and insulted me because I made some suggestions to Katie the colorist! Not only is he a moody, rude and arrogant guy but he also bluntly told me that they were 'making no money on these coupons and it was a big mistake'. To top it all up he also mentioned that my coupon expired and that it was for first-time customers only! I had to show him on the Screamin Daily Deal Voucher that it was valid until May 14 and that there was no 'First-time customers only' mention on it! That was not the end: he told me not to come back to his salon nor to his school (never been there) and that he will no longer honor such coupons anymore. Needless to say that, at that point, I was shocked and gobsmacked by what I heard. Wow! I came in for a color and the result of that: - I got insulted - I left James Albert Salon stressed (great way of starting the week-end) - And on top of that when I came back home, I realized that there were some uncolored patches on my head (Nice the checkerboard look!). No wonder why his salon has become Ghost Town! The former, excellent stylists were the ones who made the Salon's name. I will definitely follow them elsewhere. I've had my hair cut by James twice. The first time was about 5 months ago. I told him to just trim my hair and add a few more layers to frame my face. At the end of the haircut, he blew it out but was distracted talking to a friend that came into chat. He parted my hair on the opposite side I came in with and his lack off attention during the blow dry left me with a frizzy undercurl. I went home and immediately restyled my hair. Surprisingly, it looked great. I got so many compliments on my hair after this first cut, I forgot all about the bad blow drying job. I went back to James a few days ago and asked him to cut 2-3 inches off my hair, not to give me too many layers and to make my bangs a little longer than brow length. I also reminded him that I part my hair on the left side. He began cutting my hair and I was pleased with what I was seeing. My bangs were a perfect length and I did not see too many layers. He began blowing it out but then asked his assistant stylist to finish the blow so he could begin another customer's haircut. I was pleased with my cut even though I could see the assistant stylist didnt do such a great job blowing my hair out. But THEN... James came over and picked up my bangs once they were dry and before I could say anything he cut into them!! He literally layered my bangs and then motioned for the assistant to flat iron my hair.. I wanted to cry. I came in with naturally curly hair and during my cut he even talked about cutting it a certain way to compliment my curl. Now I had shag bangs and I let the assistant straighten my hair to see if it would settle my bangs. Nope. Today I washed my hair to see what it looks like curly. Everything but my bangs looks fine...the bangs look terrible. I will be pinning them back for the next month or so until they grow in and will not be coming back to this salon. Avoid. Avoid. It's always a tricky proposition... looking for a better cut, color, and style. Especially when you've found well enough at another high end salon. That said, I found James Albert online - through Yipit. I was able to book with James directly and let me tell you, I couldn't be more impressed. I had walnut / auburn hair and although I liked it, I wanted a more healthy, shiny look. I also wanted a more youthful (not to be confused with cute or girlish) cut. James delivered. I have the perfect blend of chestnut, my hair has never looked healthier, and the cut - I have been getting compliments all weekend long. And the frosting on the cake... unlike other high end salons, I left with my wallet intact. Would I pay more for James... absolutely! But since I'm saving so much, I'll opt for weekly conditioning and styling treatments. I hate to say it, but sometimes cheating (on your stylist ;) is a good thing. Thanks James!!!! I always feel welcome at James Albert! ...then again, maybe it's because my hair is easy to style, and "my kind" is liked there, but anyway, here goes my review. I was referred to the stylist Bruce at James Albert by a co-worker of mine. I was growing out my hair to get it donated and was reluctant to find a new stylist in Southern California because I'm from up north. I also had recurring nightmares about my hair getting botched by a crappy stylist. So my friend puts in a good word, and I'm convinced, and I'm really happy that I was. My hair was ssoooo long, dull, and I seriously needed something exciting in my life. When I entered, it was all smiles and hellos; then again, they could have just been ecstatic by the volume of hair I had that any stylist would have been happy to get rid of. Regardless, I was seated immediately and Bruce got started with my makeover. I had NO idea what I wanted to do, just that I wanted my hair to reflect the punk-ass that I am. I trusted Bruce because I knew he knew what he was doing. He gave me a wash with lovely smelling shampoo and conditioner, and began snipping away. Throughout the appointment, staff members kept coming up and expressing how excited they were to see the results. They were so positive! He ended up giving me an asymmetric cut, which I got SO many compliments on at school. It was just so different! When that cut grew out, I went back for a "trim", which ended up being a full on new style with color. The price is a bit high; HOWEVER, the quality is absolutely the best! I'd say the price is just right for what you're getting out of it. James Albert salon is very clean, roomy, and has a nice warm feeling. It is also a school, which is down the street. There are four washers in the back, and a pretty restroom. Their staff is totally nice, and try to converse with everyone. There are also a few nail stations, which were always occupied while I was there so I'm pretty sure they do a good job. I got a deal for a haircut and color for $49 and really enjoyed my experience here. Unlike some other salons, they didn't treat me differently since I was using a deal. I got a nice haircut and color and would come back again if there was a deal...the regular prices are a bit too high for a student like me, but when they have deals, they are really worth it! read more

I have been getting my hair cut and colored by Kim Schultz at the James Albert Salon for over 10 years.....she is the BEST!!!!! I can honestly say that every time I sit in her chair I can trust that I'm going to walk away with an amazing hair cut. Alot of times I don't even suggest a certain cut, I'll just trust Kim to do what she things best....and every time it's fantastic!!!! We have experimented with different colors, different lengths and I always walk away happy!! I receive alot of compliments on my hair and the color. I would highly recommend Kim to anyone who is looking for an experienced stylist who really knows what they're doing. Before Kim I've had people layer my hair and it would never look or feel the way that I had hoped. Kim is very talented and superb at all aspects of styling. I have moved from Orange County to San Diego and I still drive to visit Kim. Kim also did all of my bridesmaids hair styling for my wedding last June and all of them looked great!!! Not sure what the other's expectations are/were...but I've recenlty been to James's salon after having been a regular customer years ago. Traveling job kept me in other places or having to do it myself. What a relief to come back to James! He is a master at color and I never worry about the outcome. Sure he's downsized...who hasn't in this economy, but he is still the most talented person I trust with my hair. Thanks James! Will be back soon. read more

My son and I recently got our haircuts here and we couldn't be happier. James is a natural and seems to know exactly how you want to look after getting your hair styled. Nicole Christian at James Albert Salon is amazing. I have seen many hairdressers in the past (some really great) but Nicole is the best. She gave me the best haircut I've ever had and my color and highlights look fantastic. She also give you an incredible head massage (bonus!). Nicole is sweet, smart and listens to what you want. James Albert salon is in a really neat cozy area with trees and flowers and it's right next to Haute Cakes that serves delicious food and the best "blended mocha" you'll find. I purcahsed a hair cut style blow out, deep conditioning treatment and bottle of conditioner thru LivingSocal. My main reason for getting this was for the deep conditioning treatment. When I called I made sure to request someone who works on curly hair, and told her I had the voucher, and what was on it. Nicole said she works on curly hair and she was to be my stylest. I got there for the apointment. It was tucked away and thought I was lost. The receptionist was - okay. Nicole came in talked to me, asured me she cuts curly hair ALL the time. I stressed I want my hair to remain long. Told her horror stories of stylest that cut my hair short. Yes I pointed out no more than 1 inch off the length. (always be specific I learned the hard way) Now part of what happend was my fault. I should never assume anything ad i did. My hair was washed, and we sat Nicole started to trim my hair. I watched her - she took small amounts off. What I failed to notice is how many times she trimed the same spot. The manager was paying bill and yapping about all kinds of stuff. Yeally - I don't want to know one of your stylests can't pay her electric bill and she needs to just pay to get a sitter so she can work more hours. The owner John - is at the station next to me. Calling his car finance companies. Don't need to know how much you owe on both of them. Another stylest brings in food, and eats it on the floor. Manicurist is applying acrylic nails on the other end of the salon - no ventalation. I don't want to smell that. By this time Nicoloe is done with the hair cut, and must realized she took too much off and ofers to blow my hair out straight. For something different. THAT is when i noticed how short my hair is. I tell her yes okay. I am sick to my stomach, to see how short it is. Barly to my sholder blades. When I came in - it was almost to my waist. I want to run. Now my assumtion was - the deep condiditon treatment was after the hair cut. by bad for not asking. At this time - I just want out. I gave her the voucher - (she didn't want it at the begining) Paid - FULL price basically for a hair cut that I was sick about. And left - couldn't get out fast enough. The hair cut wasn't bad - just not what I requested. Other said it wasn't that short. that was December and I am still waiting for my hair to grow out enough I can tie it up on it's own and not give me a headace from it being so tight. Just pay attention and speak up. Don't assume and you may have a great expeciance. read more
