Since lobster rolls are a Boston specialty, my husband and I wanted to try one of the best while we were visiting. James Hook was in an article I found and was the nearest one to where we were hanging out that day, so we decided to try it. My first impression was... skeptical. There was a food truck on the patio that wasn't open. Ample outdoor seating but also very crowded that day. The restaurant itself looks kind of like one of those construction trailers or something. Not very appealing. But there was a line to order, so we got in it. The line went relatively fast. I think we waited maybe like 15 minutes. We ordered a large lobster roll, large clam chowder, and two beers. I think it was like $80 or something for just 4 items. Yeah... Went outside to get a table and waited for our food. Since you order at the counter, there's no table service or anything (although there should be at those prices). But there was a girl bringing out orders.They were so busy though that she didn't really stick around to see if you needed anything. And we needed forks for the lobster roll. So I had to go searching inside and they were out. I only found 2 plastic spoons. The food itself was good but not particularly memorable. Clam chowder was tasty. The only thing that stood out to me was how fresh the lobster tasted. They certainly pile it on the roll, so you definitely need a fork to eat it all. They should bring some with your order or the order girl should at least have some on her so she doesn't have to make another stop. Overall, I don't think we'd return. It wasn't a bad experience. The hot buttered lobster roll was divine. The regular sized roll had plenty of scrumptious lobster meat to satisfy my appetite. The chowda was nice and hot but I thought that it could of had more clams. It was a great location for sitting outside as the sun was out. After lunch, I was able to order my fresh live lobsters (5) for packing to be carried on my flight back to the West Coast. Those lobsters were the best when I boiled them to eat back home within the next two days. I would recommend anyone to take lobsters back with you even if you're flying. At first, I was leaning towards the regular size and butter option, but the person at the register recommended large and mayo. They are generous with the amount of lobster they add in. The synergy with the roll, mayo, and lobster was perfect. Mayo wasn't too overpowering, the roll was soft, and the lobster tasted super fresh and tasty. It's hard to swallow the price tag: the large lobster roll will run you ~$40. This is no cheap lunch. James Hook draws in a crowd, so keep that in mind if you want to plan ahead of the lunch rush. I am partial to the hot lobster roll, the lobster is doused in butter and so tender and juicy. They are generous with their portions so definitely worth the price tag. The clam chowder pairs very well with the lobster roll, it is not thin and is filled with clams and potatoes. Don't sleep on the crab cakes, either - they are huge and bursting with crab. The inside has minimal seating since it's still a fully functioning seafood market, but the outdoor set-up is nice on a sunny day. There are a few parking spots out back which are handy if you are driving into the city to grab some food. Service is relatively quick so you can be back on the road in no time! read more
