Since we were visiting Boston, we wanted to try out one of their lobster rolls. We happened to be passing by and heard that James Hook was a frequently recommended spot. We got the large lobster roll with butter, which ended up being around $40. The lobster roll itself comes with a large amount of lobster, and it tastes pretty good! Everything was so yummy!! I came here with my cousin and we started off w the mussels which were so delicious and lemony. We got these margaritas which were very well made, a good amount of alcohol :) and then I got a lobster roll w mayo which was so good and fresh!! Best lobster roll I've had so far :) the fries were crisp and the coleslaw was amazing with my meal! The staff were very nice and checked in on us frequently. Lobster roll: 8/10 Lobster bisque: 1/10 Lobster roll: $40 Bisque: $15 Bisque didn't have a single piece of lobster, and that price is ridiculous without any lobster. I think the place used to be good and now it's just a tourist trap. Should have asked for a refund on the bisque but we had to leave and catch a flight. I was recommended to come here by a long time resident from the 90's, and let me tell you that it was just as good as he described it. We went on the last day of 2024, and it was full, but well worth the wait. The employees were friendly and there was plenty of space to sit, not inside but outside. I noticed that every time I have a lobster roll is because someone is visiting from out of state. I've been to a few places but never been to James Hook. And recently someone who lives nearby mentioned it so sure, why not. When we got there, there was a long line but since we're here already, we waited while catching up. Service was terrible, with more than one staff being rude and slow (but fast when closing the umbrella half an hour before closing time). And I've had some in Boston and it's been pretty good, not as good as Maine but when in New England, you gotta grab a lobster roll. It wasn't busy, lots of outdoor seating. We got the large 1 pound lobster roll in Mayo. It was a lot of lobster! Well for almost $40 you bet your butt it's a lot. It didn't disappoint. We added a a little salt to it. Fantastic and absolutely packed lobster rolls. Getting a good lobster roll in Boston is a bit of a gamble. There's lots of tourist traps around. While James Hook certainly draws a crowd, it did deliver when it came to both quantity and quality. The lobster was fresh. The pieces were large, recognizable claw and tail meat chunks. And the rolls were packed high. Each giant mouthful was delightful. Stuffed clam and lobster bisque were OK. Clam chowder was not the best, but a pretty good version. The place is casual, it's a fish market with some indoor and outdoor seating. Service was friendly. Definitely worth a visit. Small shop for both fresh and prepared seafood! Service was quick you order at the counter and they call your number when it is ready. They have some seating in the shop but also indoor seating in two separate enclosed pavilions on the property right outside the shop itself. Our favorite lobster roll in Boston! Lots of menu options, and fresh and frozen goods to purchase too. But we always go for a large lobster roll plus chips. The large comes with lots of lobster (though it seemed less last time I visited) so regular is also good for one person depending on how hungry you are. Also recommend the clam chowder! Went for highly rated lobster rolls yesterday, Monday. First issue is no facilities, only 2 portapotties in the blazing sun. Rustic patio is fine but come on! The 2 covered areas to eat have no air and no breeze. Both of us had the cold lobster roll and lobster honestly tasted spoiled. Like canned tuna. They remade them and it was better but a looong way from even "good". $100 for 2 rolls and 2 drinks in the hot sun. MUST GET LARGE LOBSTER ROLL W/ MAYO! They DO NOT skimp on the amount of lobster. The bread they used was excellent and gave the sandwich a great bite/texture. Lobster chunky and juicy and nicely mixed with the mayo. I absolutely loved it and was what I came to Boston to eat. Wasn't too much of a fan of the corn chowder. My go to for Lobster roll! The chunks of lobster are amazing! I got the lobster roll with butter. The butter was on the side. Very fresh and the bits of lobster kept falling while eating! This is a great place to go if you are not interested in the fillers and looking to enjoy a good lobster roll. Their are other dishes available. The crab cake is really tasty as well. The most unfathomable experience. Hook and company was my family go-to spot for live lobster for well over 50 years. I will never return and will spread the word about how they treat customers and cut every possible corner. Last evening, while sitting on the back patio eating dinner at Hook, a man suddenly appeared on the other side of the fence and turned on a leaf blower, which he then placed on the ground. He walked through the fence and told us and the other tables it was time to leave, the place was closed. He walked up to another table and picked up their tray and walked away with it. it did not matter to him if anyone was still out there finishing their meal. I asked if that leaf blower was really his way of telling us it was time to leave and he said yes! So I walked into where the offices are and there was a man sitting at one desk and a woman at another and I said "excuse me, is it really your policy to have someone start a leaf blower out on the patio and tell us it is time to leave? Even if we're eating?" And unbelievably, both of them said yes! And then they continue to have "an I don't really care about you little customer" attitude. No warning that the place was closing and needed to be cleared out at such and such time when we ordered our $250 worth of lobster rolls. No server came around and said hey by the way, we know you're still eating, but it's time for us to go home so you must leave now. As for the food, the owners are incredibly cheap. The mayonnaise style lobster roll is literally just watery mayonnaise and lobster meat. No seasoning whatsoever and nothing like celery or anything in the mix. Not even a garnish of a lettuce leaf. Average quality lobster meat. There are dozens and dozens of better places to find a lobster roll in the city of Boston. Do not waste your time at Hook- they do not care about customers, or I suspect even lobster. They only care about the $$$$$ they can make running a third-rate tourist trap. I came here with a friend a few weeks ago. It's perfect for a nice day because the seating is all outside but if it's cold or the wether is bad, I'm not sure it would be too enjoyable. The food is very fresh, you can go inside and see all of it, I think you could even buy some if you wanted. However, my lobster roll was just okay. The bun was not great and the cold lobster roll is just lobster and Mayo which is kind of boring compared to other cold lobster rolls I've had. The do give you a decent amount of meat which is nice. The service was great. You order and the window of the food truck and it comes out the side, you can also order in the trailer and inside might have more food options... I couldn't be sure though.
