Carlos is a superb plumber. He recently repaired our furnace that was not efficiently operating, replaced valves and pipes, and other details were carefully attended to. He repaired the water softener that had stopped allowing water to run through it - he undid the numerous blocks and communicated with the company - was a many hour job yet the price remained manageable. Our water heater needed repair as well - he was quick and detail oriented, replacing what was needed. Carlos is unusual in that he is able to think about the whole picture, checking for safety, long term operating issues, sees what is needed for our high altitude desert home that has plumbing issues simply due to harsh weather and rapid wear and tear. I hired a plumber from this company in October to fix a leaking pipe. At the time, the plumber said the job was complete, but the pipe was still leaking and I had to point it out before he left. He fixed it. Now, three months later, the same spot has started leaking again. I shared photos of the issue, and I'm very disappointed with the quality of the repair. The leak was never properly fixed, and the problem has returned. I would not recommend this service based on my experience. read more

Carlos (with James Pluming) did a fantastic job replacing a cracked frost free hose bib. This was a difficult problem which could have turned into a very big issue, but due to Carlos' 33 years of experience, it was resolved within 2hrs. Carlos worked quickly and efficiently to cut a hole in the side of my hose and replace the damaged fixture. He did so without hitting the water line or other structure and the hole was easy to patch up afterwards. This is a review for work done a few years ago. I had James Plumbing and Heating do the plumbing and heating/cooling work on a major remodel on a home I bought to live in. I have had a series of problems with their work ever since. Here is a list of those problems. 1. They never hooked up the drain from my laundry room and power room to the septic system. This resulted in a large flood of water caused by backup from the washer being used. This cost me thousands of dollars to have them repair and attach the drain lines properly. 2. The failed to install a cover to the under sink clean out in my guest bathroom causing a strong septic odor. Once we discovered this, it was an easy fix. However, please see below. 3. Somehow, James Plumbing did not install a proper functioning pea trap in my guest and master bathroom showers. This has caused a persistent problem with septic odor in those bathrooms that was difficult to sort out. The repair would require tearing out tile and shower pans and trying to replumb those drain lines. I've just covered the drains when not using them for now. The proper solution is just too expensive. 4. James had their "minisplit technician", Gabe, install my minisplit system. This has become the worst, most dishonest, and most expensive problem I've had to deal with. Gabe recommended a Daikon (decent budget brand) system. However, he spec'd a system designed for a warmer climate. It is not sufficient to heat a home in our Northern New Mexico climate. He then installed it by burying it in the walls and failed to test it for refrigerant leaks. It has had a constant sle leak, now a fast leak. It has never worked properly, has required multiple service calls which only provided temporary relief and at significant expense. Now the minisplit system, after only a few years, will be replaced by a properly rated and properly installed system. Additionally, the replacement system technician pointed out that the compressor was insufficient to power the head units...so I received a smaller compressor than what I paid for! I'm not an ignorant person. But I trusted James Plumbing and Heating to do a professional job. The only thing professional about their work was that they were paid for it! I have hesitated to post a negative review, but this minisplit fiasco is the final donno in a series of incompetent, neglectful. and unprofessional work that I received from the James Plumbing and Heating company. read more

The weather suddenly turned cold so I tried to turn on my boiler to get radiant heating started. However, the boiler wouldn't start. I called James Plumbing and they sent Carlos to check out the system. Although James Plumbing was fully booked, Carlos made a special trip since I couldn't face another cold night. He arrived, assessed the problem, and made repairs quickly and efficiently, plus he was a very pleasant person. The service tech (Daniel) was outstanding. He had the new water heater installed within 48 hours. His time and product descriptions were spot on. He cleaned up beautifully. Carlos first came out to address several major issues in our mechanical room. His inspection was thorough and accomplished in a professional manner. He replaced a toilet during his 2nd visit. We found him to be conscientious, precise in his work, and very competent. The motor for one of my coolers quit working last week. James Plumbing had done a good job of replacing the pump last summer so I called the company again. The dispatcher was professional and efficient in making the appointment. She called a couple of days later when an opening became available to move it up if I wanted. Carlos, the technician, was attentive and thorough in assessing the condition of the cooler. He kept me advised of what was needed and recommended additional cleaning that had built up over time as well as servicing the water line and cooler pads without replacing them. He worked diligently to scrape and sweep the sides and the pan. He is knowledgeable and confident regarding his work and easy to work with. I am writing to recommend their services. read more

Lets put it this way, they did plumbing work for me and I had to redo everything they did. When I sent them a very detailed letter outlining my issue, including returning their incorrect parts, they never responded. Not a word. I spent over $300 dollars with them, on a really simple problem (shower valves). They installed the wrong parts that failed 2 days after installed. They had already been back to try to correct and failed. The technician had a bad attitude. I wanted to give them time to respond to my complaint, and the fact they failed to do so further supports my case. Listen we all have bad days, no one is perfect. I requested a service visit to start my boiler at a commercial business that opens at 10:30 AM. I said that staff could be there a bit earlier. The technician was in such a hurry that he didn't wait for the store to open. Hate to think what he would have done with the boiler, being so rushed. Critical: Professionalism, Value Carlos was my technician. Totally capable guy. I liked him. Labor at $160 per hour is fine by me. However, James plumbing and heating charged me $300 for two Supco 90340 General Purpose Switching Relays. These relays cost $12.10 per on Amazon or $12.50 per at Supplyhouse.com. I think we can all agree that charging $150 for an item that cost the plumber $15 at most is unfair trade practice (the real irony is that I paid $160 per hour for him to supposedly go pick them up at a local plumbing store, so they really cost $460 vs the $30 they are worth). Sad, because Carlos is a solid guy. So watch out. Of course no disclosure of what these parts were going to cost until installed. I have had them done before and knew they were not significant cost items. Had no idea until I finally got to see the bill that this was going to essentially be theft. Has to be an honest plumber in Santa Fe somewhere. Keep looking. read more

A mixed review, but generally beware. Carlos came for multiple problems and for the most part did an excellent job. However, a fix he made for a pipe in the bathroom under some removed tiles leaked. I called James and they assured me on the phone if the problem was with their work the fix would be free. [Later, Carlos said that didn't come from James, but, you know, when you talk to whoever answers the phone, you figure they speak for the company and an extra $75 is NOT free] It was their work, and they didn't charge me for the fix. That was the good news. Here's the bad: they wanted to charge me $75 for the trip even to fix their screw up, because I am "out of town". I am 6 miles past the city line, and though $75 is ridiculous to charge for that, I paid it the first time, but to come back and fix their own mistake? When I argued that is seriously bad, Carlos at first argued I was further away than places they charge like Pojoaque {we are MUCH closer to both the city line and James' office than Pojoaque]. Carlos eventually relented on the trip charge, but while claiming the trip charge was for his lost time making the trip, he stood there and wanted to keep arguing, losing more of his "valuable" time, rather than just take my thanks for fixing the screwup and leaving. So all in all, most of the work was good, they came back, but be prepared to be charged extras and be charged for their "free warranty" work. read more

The issues started with the front desk getting the phone number wrong so that we couldn't be contacted. They told us a different price than what was charged. They included a driving time in her service time which nearly doubled the hourly rate. The plumber who showed up was very rude and unprofessional. He kept interrupting and left without giving us a receipt. He said to my mom that because she's a lady she doesn't know certain stuff. 0/10. Overall it was nearly 500 dollars to turn on and "clean" a swamp cooler. Do yourself a favor and find people who won't rip you off. read more

As another reviewer wrote, pay attention to the amount of time they are actually there. Literally I suggest announcing the time to the guy when they arrive so there's no arguing in the end. The guy was here for 2.5 hours and he tried to charge me for 3.5. I noted the time he arrived and left and complained but unfortunately I had no way of proving it to him. He brought it down to 3 hours at least. He also left (like took his car and left) for at least 15 minutes and was in and our of our house multiple times...apparently I have to pay for this time as well. BE SURE TO REQUIRE A DETAILED INVOICE BEFORE THEY LEAVE. Carlos gave me only a total bill, saying I had to get the invoice from the office. When I did I saw that he charged for 4 hours when was able to prove that he was there for only 2.5. The drive from their office to my place is 13 minutes per Google maps. There were still no details on the names of the parts replaced nor their individual prices. I had to call multiple times to get this info and to get an adjustment on the labor cost ($140/h). The parts, available online for $165 were charged at $370 which is 240% more than their online cost to the public. 2.4 times the cost available to the public is well more than a fair surcharge. Carlos did at least fix one problem that the previous plumber did not know the cause of-hot water getting into the cold lines. However he replaced a boiler zone valve that was not broken because he did not check the thermostat controlling it first to see that it was loose. read more

His problem solving skills are superb for multiple difficult plumbing issues: replacing old and calcified pipes, new multiple connecting parts, valves, water heater replacement, complex toilet installation involving building new foundation for the toilet, complete shower and sink redoing of all plumbing parts. Called them for an estimate based on their good reviews. They charge for an estimate but would apply that towards the job if you hired them. I wrote out very specifically how I wanted things priced because I was not sure if I would do all of the work. I then reviewed the list over the phone with them before they did the estimate. The estimate came with the largest part of work bid at zero dollars and I was pretty sure they were not doing it for free. I called back and again stated how I wanted it to be priced and gave them the chance to fix their zero dollar bid mistake. It was sent back several days later not priced the way I originally asked. I called back AGAIN and requested the price as I had originally requested several weeks before. I never got the estimate I requested. Never heard from them again but they cashed my check within days of first coming out. I can understand if I kept changing my mind about what I wanted but I put in writing what I was asking for and reviewed it several times. It was not rocket science. The next plumber I called gave the pricing I needed without charging for an estimate and took care of it all in a few days. Don't mess with these guys. This charge for estimate thing is their way of ripping you off. One hundred bucks I will never see again. read more

Made an appointment from 1:00 to 4:30. At 4:45 I called to find out where the plumber was. All the operator could do was give me the number of the plumber and she acted like it was my fault. I called the plumber and I could hear the music in the bar he was in. I asked if he was going to show and he said he lost my number. Waited 3 1/2 hours for a no-show and no one at James seemed to really care. Guess they have so much business they can blow you off. Got online and figured out how to do it myself. Call anyone else. Called James Plumbing to replace a toilet for us. My husband , who is handicapped still recovering from a broken leg, went ahead and removed the old toilet. was not easy. Carlos came and proceeded to install new toilet which we had purchased. His first request was for us to open all windows because he was too hot. It was cold outside and we are in our 70's. But OK I did as he requested. Then he found a problem while installing which required more equipment.(More money). Installed the toilet only to find that it had a crack and was leaking. Then he had the audacity to ask me if we had a pump to get the water out!!! Mind you, this is a new toilet with clean water in it!!!! What????? He was going to leave us without fixing anything and no help for us to finish the project. I had to leave the house as I was furious!!!! This project cost us a fortune.
