A lunch outing today (8/04/24) with my wife and son at around noon. Got seated at a table right near the entrance since it was pretty packed inside for lunchtime. Took a look at the menu and noticed the Combo Special prices went up again, since the last time we came to this restaurant! The Beef Bulgogi and Tofu Soup combo showed a price of $37.99! I recall it being $28.99 - $34.99 in the past 2-3 years! Dunno why the prices keep going up, but that's something we realized while checking out the menu, which has been pretty much the same ever since the first time. Our complimentary fried fish and side dishes were dropped off at our table shortly after placing our food order. Then about 10 minutes later, we received the Bibimbap and Beef Bulgogi. Seemed like the meat dish's portion size dropped once again! It used to be a bigger sized plate, if I remember correctly... Anyway, we enjoyed our food and atmosphere while we dined in. Parking in the Ranch 99 Market Plaza is not my favorite because it is a little wonky made, but I am glad it has expanded a little bit since the last time I have visited. Geeez people...what's with some of these hater reviews O_0 So far my experience here has been positive--came here on a Saturday evening around 5:30pm to beat the dinner rush, I heard there's often a line out the door and they will take names and phone #s on a list and call you when a table is available. Saw this in action around 6:30pm. I figure if you need to wait for a table at a restaurant the food must be pretty decent right? We ordered the bulgogi (marinated grilled sliced ribeye) platter $33.99, a kal-bi (marinated grilled short rib) platter $33.99, budae jigae (spicy ramen stew with bacon, spam, hotdogs, rice cakes, tofu, cheese) $19.99 and a seafood soondubu (tofu stew) $17.99. All the food was tasty--there was a moment when we first dove into the entrees when we ate in silence, which is when you know we enjoyed the food enough to forget about talking lol. The overall profile of the meal leaned a bit on the sweeter side for K-bbq, and the budae jigae tasted very homey, though I consider for these parts it's quite good. Each entree came with banchan (Korean side dishes) for each person (four of us)--a small fried fish, a scoop of potato salad, spicy picked cucumbers, regular Napa cabbage kimchi, and lightly pickled bean sprouts. I enjoyed all the banchan, they were on par with Korean places in NYC. The servers were all very friendly and asked us multiple times (like maybe 4/5 times) if we would like to have our banchan refilled. Each dish came with rice, and we opted for the rice cooked in a stone bowl, which gets a crust at the bottom that some people enjoy, though the rice tends to be pretty adhered so it's a bit hard to scrape off. They've fit as many seats as they can into this place, about 40ish I think. It's not a big space so I think 6 maybe 8 people would be the largest party they can accommodate. If you're ever craving a homemade Korean meal, this is a place to consider. I visited around 2 pm, so it was relatively quiet (not a complaint), and the menu was simple, with tofu soups as the main focus. I ordered the A combo with beef ribs and seafood soup (medium spice level), along with an additional dol nak bibimbap. The beef was tender with a sweet marinade. The soup was enjoyable - I was so eager to try it that I forgot to take a photo! Free side dish refills were also provided, and the staff were amazing! The dol nak bibimbap wasn't particularly flavorful to my taste. I think the intention was to highlight the simple ingredients like perilla leaf, finely diced marinated squid, and sesame oil aroma. However, to serve HALF a bowl of tofu soup that's super salty (probably bc they added more water and sprinkled more salt in it) for $20 does not sit well with me. This place is pretty solid. We came on a Monday night and got seated right away. The restaurant had a decent amount of people. The service was decent. Some of the younger staff weren't as attentive and even forgot our water but the older staff were more so attentive and refilled banchan. The food came out pretty quick and it tasted great. It's been a while since we had Korean and I remembered this place. We came in hangry and left satisfied. Ordered bulgogi and spicy pork, bimbimbop, soup, and seafood pancake. Everything was so delish. One complaint is that the meat came with lots of raw onions. This place is packed on the weekends. It's a small place. I'm a thin gal and even I worry about hitting someone while walking through the place. The decor has been the same for the last..I don't know..20 years it seems like -which is fine. I come here for the food. There banchans are good -a little on the smaller side. The variety is so-so. I was a little reluctant getting the pancake because last time, it was too charred for me. I ordered the bibimbap for delivery from Jang Soo via an Asian grocery app. In addition to the bibimbap (rice packed separately), the takeout also included four complimentary appetizers and a soup. Everything was packed carefully. All good was 10/10. When it comes to finding an authentic Korean restaurant, this place nailed it! Their subndubu (soft tofu stew) was absolutely delicious and transported me straight to the streets of Seoul. I love going to this place anytime I'm at Great Wall. They have amazing service and the staff is so understanding and kind. The food is good as well of course. When I went there was this guy who said his food did not fast right and the workers remade it until the guy liked it, which props to the staff. We decided to randomly choose 4 restaurants to get take-outs to cover several days in addition to groceries. Jang Soo Tofu is one of the 4. When we went to pick up the food, the lady handed us a box! I was like, what?! The food: Seafood soft tofu soup, with side of rice - 3.5 Stars This is an a-okay++ type of rating. I suspect the food is actually better than 3.5, just the fact that it's a take-out instead of eat-in. The tofu is more "disturbed"; everything is a bit off. I like that they have spiciness option; mine is 4 out of 5. It's probably not the best option for take-out. Bibimbap (not Dolsot) with side of rice and soup - 3.5 Stars Our favorite is the Dolsot option. This is a reasonable alternative, but it feels a little sad without the hot stone bowl. I was pleased to see the side of soup though. 4 Banchan options - 3.5 Stars I was wondering if they are offering banchan on their take-outs, so this was a pleasant surprise. Flavors are good. Food 4.5/5 - The food here is super tasty. We ordered the seafood tofu soup and it came with side dishes AND fried dish. My favorite was the cucumber kimchee. The tofu soup was very comforting on a cold day and served with rice. You can choose your spice level as well. We also ordered the green onion seafood pancake that was crunchy on the outside and came with the delicious flavorful dipping sauce. My grandma rates the food a 5! Service 2/5 - I will admit, the service is not the best here meaning they aren't as attentive or check in on you often, but I respect the hustle. For me, this usually means the food is good at Asian restaurants haha. It has to shine and speak for itself. Our server did offer to cut our seafood pancake for us and also came out with the perfect amount and size of to-go boxes for our leftovers and even included the container for the sauce without me asking for it. I've been to Jang Soo one time before and I wasn't super impressed (years ago), figured I would try it again because my dad wanted Korean food and I didn't want to complicate things by suggesting somewhere else. We waited about 10 minutes (Friday night around 630pm). Ordered the beef bulgolgi combo with tofu seafood soup and also ordered the octopus bibimbap because our server said the combo wasn't enough food. They brought out one pot of rice for the 3 of us and two side dish trays with really small portions...like a mini ice cream scoop of potato salad. They fill them during the meal but I ate that scoop in 1 bite and finished the rest because I was so hungry and waited awhile for them to come and refill it. Beef bulgolgi was sweet and tasted like a regular, basic bulgolgi. Sides were okay, all really basic options (cucumbers, kimchi, bean sprouts, potato salad and 1 deep fried fish). Seafood tofu soup was good, full of tofu, not too spicy. The octopus bibimbap was not good, just tasted burnt, no flavor. We would have been fine to just order the combo and an extra rice. It's been years since I've been in here, it tastes exactly as I remember and I love their tofu soup. Service is always so so, they do what they can depending on how busy they are. We used to go to Federal Way for korean food in the past, but ever since COVID started, it seemed like all these businesses has been affected: both in price (went up ) and quality ( declined ). The Jang Soo Tofu Restaurant has been doing To Go orders only during the pandemic and just reopened for dine in recently. We were not disappointed, the food they served is authentic, packed with flavor, good portions and priced reasonably. The staff are all trying their best to keep up with the customer flow and moinitoring the vaccination guideline for seating. All their dishes come with unlimited refill of ban chan side dishes. Friday night was supposed to be busy, but to our surprise we were able to grab a seat right away, it was very nice! As usual our cravings were all satisfied with the hot spicy Korean soup which is also perfect for a rainy day. I love all the unlimited sides compared to other Korean places we've tried. I know the best Korean restaurants are down in Federal Way but I'm pretty happy coming here since it is closer to me and the food is just as good. I do miss dining in but I'm not quite ready yet. I am glad that I can take my food to go though. The pricing is pretty decent compared to Exit 5 at the Landing (expensive!). Only gripe I have is that it's in Great Wall and the parking lot is chaotic. Pray to the Universe that you don't get run over or find a ding on the side of your car. The Bulgogi + Tofu soup combo is what I like to order since I like sharing. The Korean restaurant experience is all about family style dining anyway. This is probably the go-to Korean restaurant for the south side of Seattle. If you're looking for all you can eat Korean BBQ, this is not the place for you, however, if you're looking for simple straight forward Korean food, this is it. It is located in the great Wall in Kent and is across from Bambu. We came here on a Sunday right before the lunch crowd which was awesome, otherwise it would have been a wait. We got the combo which came with any tofu soup of your choice and a sizzling plate of either beef or pork. We got the intestines tofu soup and the kalbi beef plate. It also come with 6 side dishes (Kim chi, mashed potatoes, fried fish, bean sprouts, cucumber in sauce and another veggies in sauce). The fried fish was surprisingly good, crispy and not oily and cooked perfectly. The soup was also good, however, the intestines we're barely there. The kalbi beef was tender and has good flavor and the cooked onion was perfect. That combo can easily feed 2 people and we cleaned out the entire thing. One of the few foods I could eat everyday would have to be (soon dubu jjigae or Korean Tofu Soup). After living in Korea, my taste buds are a bit particular. My go to for a few years now is Jang Soo Tofu down in Kent which just opened this month for in-person dining (I know because we went multiple times a month to check )! Their soups are warm and comforting, spicy and savory, and the perfect cure for this winter weather . There were three of us total. I was served hot tea and received menus right away. I placed the orders for all of us before my friends arrived. Once the rest of the party showed up and we had gotten our food it was hard to get the attention of the waiters to get iced waters or to get refills on sides which was slightly annoying since they weren't a packed house and were at a side table eating their lunch. We had beef tofu stew, kalbi, and bibimbap and everything was really good. They got really good crisp on the rice in the bibimpbap. The staff here was very rude towards customers who simply got sat down, waited for nearly 20 mins without being taken orders and not even asking if I wanted to order. Plus, three staff were scolded each other in front of the front house with all customers inside. I completely understand the short staff and such story. The restaurant is located inside of a strip mall of sorts with other restaurants, grocery store, shops and other shops. We decided to give this place a shot since since I had been getting over cold and I wanted soup. My husband ordered #12 mild and he really liked it. I could eat it since I can't handle spiciness of any sort. The meals come with a side of white rice, fried fish and 3 sides. I ordered the combo A and the meat was perfectly seasoned, but it was a little fatty but overall good. The choice of soup I choose was the tofu with beef white and it was perfectly seasoned and overall I think it was well seasoned but I will have to try it again since my tastebuds are not recovered all the way. I'm so disappointed because this is the only legit Korean restaurant near by that isn't KBBQ, and despite being pretty pricey, they have cut down the size of their proteins by a fair amount. I got my usual fish egg soondubu and an order of bibimbap, and could barely detect any slices of fish eggs or meat. My partner initially thought that they left out the meat in the meal altogether until we found tiny scraps of beef. I also only received maybe half of one pollack roe, sliced up. This makes me so sad because I don't feel inspired to eat here anymore. For the price of everything, I might as well drive to Federal Way for the good stuff and including the cost of gas, it would be about the same as eating here. read more
