I've already written an elaborate review about my love for Java in Hyde Park, so I won't carry on again here (although I definitely could)! The atmosphere is phenomenal (as is the atmosphere in the 13th street Java). The drinks and food are high quality (as they are at the 13th street Java). And the service is excellent (as it is at 13th Street Java)! The only differences you'll find between the two are the type of patrons who frequent these spots and the parking. At the 13th Street Java you'll find people in active wear with their pups, and at Java downtown, you're likely to find business folks dressed for work. Additionally, parking downtown isn't always the most fun fete, so Java in Hyde Park has a leg up in the fact that you won't have to pay for parking (unless of course, it's the weekend...free parking downtown on Saturday and Sunday, holla!). read more

This is a cute one-off shop. The drink prices a a few cents more and the vibe is a bit uppity. We popped in here when wandering around down town for the cultural festival. What brought us here was the gluten free goodies and I can't say I would come back. There was one snickerdoodle like cookie which was acceptable. Everything else was crumbly, dry and some items tasted of chickpea flour which has a metallic, bean aftertaste I don't want in my goodies. We purchase two different muffins and three cookies to split three ways and all agreed the goodies weren't worth coming back for. The coffee and tea was nothing to rave about but they get a bump for being a local shop. I hope they find someone who knows their way around gluten-free baking better in the future. They are on the corner of intersecting streets and almost hard to miss if you're not familiar with the location. This is the same locale Flying M used to be. This is the second time I go to Java Downtown, and both times: not impressed. I am from the Wood River Valley, two Java's... both better than downtown. The people aren't kind, the shots run too slow. I am not a coffee expert, but I know when my coffee is not done well. I ordered a traditional cappuccino and was charged more than what a 12 oz cappuccino cost- which makes no sense because I'm using 6 oz less of milk. I really hope Java in Hyde Park is better because I won't be going to this coffee shop again. read more

This is probably my favorite coffee shop downtown. One of the few coffee shops that still has regular iced coffee (they have cold brew as well). Service is always good. Staff is super friendly. When you go enough, they remember you on a first name basis and remember your usual drink order. They have a good selection of house made pastries (and the best chocolate chip scone in town). Get there early or they run out of pastries most days. Usually pretty busy earlier in the day. If you want to get some work done, the best time is usually 5pm-close. read more

I watched the incredible baristas craft my drink and with the precision and passion I saw in their eyes, I knew I wouldn't be let down. Super cute little coffee shop! Delicious food and drinks. I don't normally drink super sweet lattes anymore so I had them only use half the chocolate in the "Bowl of Soul" one of their signature drinks and it was delicious. Best part was the homemade whipped cream. Also grabbed an oatmeal to go and had them add a scoop of their raspberry jam. My friend got a chai and "The Usual". And as usual it was delicious. My friend has been there many times and this was a first for me as we were going through Boise. The gentleman at the counter was super helpful and explained a few of their options to me and didn't seem annoyed by my questions as they do in some places. Java is my favorite spot downtown because the service is on point! Whether I'm walking in and taking my drink to go or sitting down for a meeting or study session, Java is where I go first! Don't question it. Just do it. It will leave you wondering how you ever existed prior to the consumption of this celestial deliciousness. You're very life will forever be divided into two distinct sections that you will come to know as: BS (Before Soul--which, coincidentally, will seem like just a bunch of BS) and AS (After Soul) It is a swirling mix of coffee, steamed milk, and Mexican chocolate. When they ask if you'd like whipped cream on top. The answer to such a question is always yes. Yes, you're trying to count calories. Of course, you're trying to be healthy. I was so enjoying the protein breakfast scramble when I dropped it all over the floor !! It's was a rough to say the least. It was one of those moments where it makes a loud crash and everyone turns to look at you ‍. But really I need to say this- The back staff were ANGELS !!! I explained to the sweet and adorable chef what happened and he was immediately offering me another meal whilst sending out someone to help me clean it! I felt awful but they made me feel so fine about it ! I just adore those two and really am so grateful for their kindness ! The world needs more of these people. I CANT BELIEVE I HAVE LIVED HERE FOR 5 YEARS AND JUST NOW GETTING TO THIS PLACE. Hands down best coffee and service. Every staff member is so friendly and caring- even after the 2nd time I was in Java they started remembering my name! Java also has a very good star program and they send you rewards all the time! Not to mention the big reason I go there is because their coffee is DELICIOUS- I like very dark and strong coffee with almond milk- the latte is never too sweet and it's never scolding hot where you have to wait 32 minutes to drink it. I live pretty close to this Java location, so I recently stopped in to do some studying and grab a cup of chai. It was somewhat late, and there was only one server. She was extremely friendly, and chatted with me about what I was studying. I ordered an soy vanilla iced chai, which was delicious. Perfectly sweet. They were out of pastries for the day, so that was a bit of a bummer. The atmosphere is great here, nice and cozy. There was only two or three other people there at the time, so it was nice and quiet as well. If I was a full-time student, you'd find me here a lot! read more

I love coming here and have been for the past 6 months. Good coffee, good tea, great service. And then today, the woman who took my money, counted out my change from the cash register -- she made my tea. With her bare hands. To be clear: she touched the filthy money and then WITHOUT PUTTING ON GLOVES OR WASHING HER HANDS, touched my tea bag. When I told her that this was really gross at best, she told me that the hot water from my tea would kill all the germs. I guess she is a scientist/barrista. Anyhoo, I know this is Idaho, but there oughta be a law against touching the money and then touching the food. Or at least a policy. And maybe a little education for the employees, eh? After visiting this shop several times I can comfortably say that I have never gotten a bad drink here. A large food menu is offered that I perfect of a break fast or brunch. Prices are on point with what you would pay anywhere with a breakfast under 10 dollars a person. There is a moderate amount of seating with the larger table comfortable seating 4 to 5 people and outdoor seating in the summer. Great spot to study apart from the noise on the weekends. read more

This place is wonderful. It was one of the first cafes I tried when I first arrived to Boise. Their prices are fair, their coffee is delicious, and I definitely enjoy the interior and decor in the downtown location. All of the interior is very warming and welcoming. Cafes should take a note of this because it makes you want to stay here for hours, or makes you want to bring your laptop or book and spend hours and hours inside being productive in a comfortable environment. Their coffee is quite tasty. I have had some really great lattes and mochas here. Also there have been several iced teas that my girlfriend and I have tried on hot summer days and were always fresh, and delicious and did not have the over steeped tea flavor, nor the flavor of it sitting in plastic too long! The only thing that brings this down from perfect is that your latte, like all cafes depends on the barista that makes it, and there can be some really great drinks, and some that are more average. I suggest anyone that goes here on a regular basis, find their favorite barista, and stick with them. I will definitely be returning and will use this as a study spot all throughout the year. I'm a coffeehouse lurker. I do my work at these places for hours on end because my miserable half-walled cubicle in a high traffic area on campus just doesn't cut it when there's beautiful Boise weather. Here, I always feel welcome despite the fact that I'm engaging in the worst type of coffee venue behavior with my constant requests for drip coffee refills and general lack of ordering food items. I usually try to make it up to them by bringing friends who are more prone to ordering food or at least a latte and everyone I've brought has seemed very satisfied. I am giving Java five stars because they have my favorite drip coffee in Boise and I like their atmosphere with the understated decor, comfortable sofas, and high ceilings. I like it best when the staff plays their own music because otherwise it's incredibly generic. The coffee has such a nice robust flavor and it's strong without being overwhelming. The windows let in so much light that it's almost as good as being outside and I can usually find an outlet for my laptop. It does get chilly in the summer when the AC is on, so bring a sweatshirt... As far as food, all I've tried is the hummus and the bagel. Both were good, but since they're such safe choices I won't comment on the menu. read more

Boy some people are picky!! This place is much better than the 1 star other reviewers have given it. Look, Java is better than most shops I've been to. The coffee tastes great across the board. I've never had that bitter, burned taste you get at mass produced shops and drive-thrus that are only concerned by speed and volume. The Keith Richards. That's 4 shots of espresso, any size beverage. Pure genius! The folks who work there are super. When you ask them to go easy on the syrup, they somehow nail it perfectly. So a couple of weeks ago on a flight from Boise to Seattle I sat next to this delightful young lady named Blair. Turns out she works at Java, whose owner I had met just the previous week. Learning that I was new to Boise she also invited to come in and check it out. The most inviting part of both invitations was not the promise of good good or coffee, it was the warmth and vibe of the invitations, like I was being asked over to their homes for coffee. Today, though neither happened to be in the store, I experienced the fulfillment of their invitations. The staff was very friendly and accommodating and it is a very comfortable place to hang. Another huge plus are the sidewalk tables. Of course the atmosphere alone is not enough for any purveyor of food and drink. Thankfully they deliver the goods. My breakfast food sampling was simple yet good and the avocado toast with cracked pepper was surprisingly very good. The key for me though, with any place that stakes it trade on coffee, are the coffee drinks and barista. The cappuccino is the best I've had in Boise, and actually one of the best I've ever tasted. I judge cafes on their coffee and Java is not high quality from what i tasted. I asked for a latte and got an under extracted coffee topped with mostly foam. Java needs to teach its "barista's" how to make espresso/lattes etc. I dont think Java wants to be defined by its coffee but by being a nice place to hang out which it is. I thought the staff were nice enough, the food ok without being fantastic. Head a few blocks to The Crux if you want better coffee. read more
