We just had our first great dinner bite at Java Nation. We stated with a mocha latte and a beer. I almost traded my ice cold beer for the best mocha latte I've ever tasted. I don't usually drink coffee at night but would order this again, maybe for dessert drink next time. For dinner we shared the grilled fish taco and brisket sandwich. The grilled fish was juicy and well seasoned, not dry and skimpy. This taco flavor profile had something differently delicious--whatever magic was there seemed further enhanced by the spritz of fresh lime. I requested sourdough bread for the tender, shredded brisket-jalapeño sandwich. It was was toasted to perfection and blended well with the coleslaw that served as the only condiment added and needed. This sandwich was hard to stop eating even though it was overly salty. (Hence the 4, nit five stars.) The decor is cozy and tastefully thought out. There is a variety of seating, from bar, high-top community table to standard tables. The staff was warm and friendly and seemed to move about busily but with respect for maintaining the social ambience. As we left, we made plans to return for breakfast. I went there at night, for food and drinks, not for coffee. Pros: Overall Experience: Good Live Music, outdoor (a necessity), not too loud. Food/Drink: I ordered "duck confit", and it was indeed duck. The beer was beer, my wife liked the cocktails. Cons: Overall Experience: The social distancing is social, but not really distanced. the center of each tables may be 6 feet apart, the customers are not. Customers wore no masks. The staff do, but too often it is worn "topless" (noise not protected) . I felt a combination of rushed (still working on my plate when it got pulled out), and impatience, when I waited ~20 minutes for fries. Food/Drink: Duck confit and ribs were pre-prepared and just re-heated. Stick to basics maybe: burgers, pizza, etc? Overall, I was overwhelmed by the "density" of customers and by "assembly chain" service:. I did not feel welcomed, I felt rushed, then abandonned. General Manager was rude, disrespectful, wait staff too....and we waited 45 minutes for a simple meal order....we almost walked out. Place is terrible. After seeing all the great reviews, my sister and I was super excited to try this place. We ordered steak and eggs, beef empanadas and Nutella crepes. A group of about eight of us got together for what may well become a monthly get-together. The place is on the west side of Rockville Pike a little south of the White Flint Mall. I must have passed it a hundred times without ever noticing. They have indoor, outdoor/enclosed and outdoor seating areas for any level of Covid concern you have. The menu consisted of numerous dishes that I love but that hide in the nooks and crannies of other restaurants' offerings, so it was especially hard to choose what I wanted. But you couldn't lose: everything looked great, so it was a matter of how much time you have, how much you want to spend, and how hungry you are. I got the avocado toast and a coffee....perfect for me. Others got a wide range of offerings, but everyone loved what they got. read more

Best outdoor dining setup I know of, delicious food and skillful and friendly staff. Java Nation has really upped their game -- and it was very good before. Had the ramen salad and squash soup at lunch yesterday and huevos rancheros for breakfast today. Very tasty! The outdoor dining space features many well-spaced tables and a dozen propane space heaters. There are some open air tables. Most tables are in a covered pavilion with 3 clear plastic walls, two with door sized openings and the third "wall" with a four-door wide opening. read more

Java Nation is one of the only alternatives to a corporate chain in the area. They offer unique coffee and a true coffee shop feel. However, the lack of corporate structure comes with some downsides. That being said, don't even bother with online ordering. First, it's through Facebook. Strange. Second, we placed an order at 9:53 am. Arrived to Java Nation around 10:15. I let the cashier know I placed an online order and she instructed me where it would be when it's ready and where to wait. I waited another 15 minutes for the entire waiting area to clear out to ask what was going on with my order. Still hadn't been started. So they finally started preparing it at 10:33 -- 40 minutes after I placed the order. I was told that my ticket was buried in the stack of in-person orders. Not to thrilled this time around. No coffee, muffin, or croissant is good enough to wait over 40 minutes for. read more

The steak and eggs was bread and eggs with a side of steak. The meager steak was burnt on the outside and undercooked on the inside, and tasted horrible as a result. I found the sauce repulsive but my partner liked it. Nobody told us that our drinks wouldn't come out with the food so they sat at the counter for minutes. Makes sense in hindsight but I'd prefer to have it spelled out to me like I'm stupid. I ordered a "Golden Milk", which is called an "Iced Golden Milk" on the Iced portion of the menu. An iced drink came out. It tasted like they picked some weeds in the back and ground them under a boot. The tables outside were so densely packed that it was impossible to pass through without grazing the back of a seated person. Food came out fairly quickly and the potatoes were good. read more

I have a comment. Why is it that you can order ahead online but still have to wait and extra 25mins for your latte to be ready? I order online today at 12:10pm granted I know it's a Sunday and it's busy the order said it was going to be ready at 12:30pm. So I get there at 12:43pm. My food is ready and my latte wasn't out till 12:56pm :( Keep it in mind that I ordered it at 12:10pm. I think ordering online is pointless if you still have to wait for your coffee way past the promised time. I mean almost 25mins after the promised time. Its the fact that I order a latte and food and the food was done when I got there but it took much longer for the latte to be done. It took 40mins to prepare a latte. People that were eating inside that order while I was waiting got their coffee before I did and keep it in mind I ordered ahead at 12:10pm. Absolutely ridiculous. Great place morning, noon or night. Plenty of outdoor heated space, nice indoor bar and seating too. I love a place where I can get great coffee drinks in the morning and beer/wine/cocktails later in the day. They have a good food menu too with a decent selection of vegetarian options. Table service and reservations some evenings later in the week, and live entertainment on the weekend. Staff is always very nice. The only thing I don't love is the plastic flower decor on the patio, which really detracts from the whole vibe, especially the cotton stalks on the wall--ew, please stop. read more

WOW! This place is as good as it gets, if not better. Cannot stop going here and so glad to have discovered it. My girlfriend got a coldbrew at this place on Saturday and said it was some of the best she has had, so we decided to come Sunday (the next day) for a big late breakfast after a long workout. She got another amazing coldbrew, I got their green power juice, and we split the E.A.T. sandwich, the Monte Cristo, the croissant with brie and fig jam, and the banana nut bread. We gobbled everything up in silence aside from "mmm" and were amazed at the passion put into each item. That night for dinner, we decided we needed more, and had spent most of the day cycling, so we came back and split a tomato pesto chicken sandwich, pupusas, and tacos, and my girlfriend got their chocolate cup cocktail to go. Again, mind blown with every bite, and you can taste the passion and love put into the dishes. The next morning, we needed even more, so got breakfast again. I decided to try their drip coffee which they roast, grind, and brew in house. I was about to add milk, but after a sip, it was so good I wanted to drink it black to appreciate it as it was one of the best coffees I have ever had. For food we split two egg sandwiches (one bacon, one sausage), a bagel w/ CC, cinnamon roll, and a berry muffin. We are both about to enter a food coma and then not eat for a couple days because of how much food we ate the last 24 hours. Outside of the food, the service is friendly and professional, takes the normal amount of time it should to make food to order (15-20min), the establishment is tasteful and clean. The one criticism is online ordering in this COVID era. The website could use improvement. For example the take out special you can't choose the type of meat on your breakfast sandwich, no pastries are listed online, you can't make substitutions to anything, and when we tried ordering for dinner it said they are not taking orders because they were closed (they were open for another 3 hours). It also is a little difficult to navigate. So we ended up calling which worked. Conclusion: GO HERE! read more

Java Nation is our favorite place for coffee. And we live in Virginia! They roast their coffee in-house and let me tell you... it's amazing! We've been following Java Nation since their original location in Kensington because we love coffee! They love coffee too and are passionate about it. This location offers great things too and it's bigger. Their wine, drinks and food selection it's awesome too. Every time I come try new things for food and everything is always on point. My new favorite is their fried chicken sandwich. But between the pupusas at this location and the arepas at the Kensington one... Mmmm mmm mmm! Delicious food! We just went on a Saturday and they had live music. Amazing! Heard they also offer mid week entertainment, so need to stay more tuned to their website. Overall, this place is an awesome addition to the area and has such a nice atmosphere! Both the food and drinks are delicious. The outdoor seating area is adorable, and the inside has a very cute decor, as well. A few comments on things that could be improved: 1.) They always seem to be out of oat milk (when ordering coffees/lattes). As one of the only cafes in the area which offers oat milk on their menu, this is one of the main reasons I like to come here for espresso and coffee. I am always disappointed when I find out they've run out of oat milk by noon (has happened multiple times that I've come over the last few weeks.) Clearly it is a popular option, so I hope they start to stock up and keep oat milk in reserve so this stops happening, as it often defeats the purpose of my trip there. 2.) Since this is a java shop (therefore in some ways competing with the local Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts), I feel they should have a rewards program for coffee/latte drinkers! I would probably come daily if I knew there was some kind of reward or points system that would eventually earn me a free drink similar to other coffee shop chains. Even a punch card would be nice. Otherwise it is more economical to get daily coffee drinks elsewhere and only come here for the occasional splurge. 3.) The register is often unattended and other employees behind the other counter usually won't address you while you're standing there waiting for someone to ring you up. Slightly awkward -- would be nice if they'd say hello or let you know someone is coming to help you soon! Other than these small issues, definitely recommend this place! read more
