Mediocre. Better options elsewhere. My junior year of hs I worked here for about 6 months and they are not very professional. They were not horrible to me and I actually really enjoyed working here. However they did not even pay me minimum wage which looking back is definitely illegal. They also phased me out meaning they never got back to me with a new schedule. I gave up contacting them after about a month so I guess you could say I was fired but you could also say I quit LMAO. That being said, the cafe is super cool inside and is such an old school vibe. However, having worked there, I can tell you that the food is way overpriced for what it is. I kept it clean and washed my hands but the small space in back is not very clean cus it's so small. Overall it felt like the menu was slapped together, but I guess that's what you can expect from a family business. Seriously, so yummy. The Grilled Herb Chicken sandwich is amazing and delicious, as is the Roast Beef sandwich and EVERYTHING ELSE. Reasonably priced too and nice atmosphere. Good for studying. Certainly feels dirty, like it needs a deep clean. Does have that comfy, coffee house thing if you like a dusty, old couch and overpriced soymilk. I do like how the sun filters in the windows. Like everywhere on Ocean Avenue -- you will get a parking ticket. Avoid Ocean Avenue businesses unless you have plenty of quarters and don't want to relax with your coffee. They patrol that street with a vengance and don't take credit cards at the meters. Seems everyone I've asked gets a ticket at least once in a while if they use Ocean Ave. read more

I stopped by Java on Ocean for a quick coffee before I went to the gym. That was one of the biggest mistakes I made this year. The price for a 16oz urn brewed coffee was $2.75. I do not mind paying premium prices for premium beverages. HOWEVER.... this beverage was less than average. The coffee was obviously from a large commercial roaster, and I would guess there were many bean imperfections per pound. Additionally the bathroom made me gag. I've came here a couple of times since it's near by school and the atmosphere isn't too bad at all. They have a really good location. It's not my favorite spot to go because: a) Their internet switches on and off from time to time b) Everything is way over priced. I paid over $5.50 for an iced white mocha drink last time I went there and trust me, I've had better for $3. Another time, I wanted to get their fruit cup but that was more than a regular lunch meal so I said forget it! I think Fog City across from 24 hours fitness on Ocean is an overall better cafe in terms of service and getting your money's worth! read more

I will give the place credit for atmosphere. The guy I've ordered from (I guess the owner) was unfriendly the two times I went in. Today I asked if they have hot yerba mate- he says no, there are some cold mate drinks in the back though. I turn to my left to see two boxes of mate lemon tea bags, and inform him he actually does carry it. His reply is 'you need to grab it for me'. Okay, sure, whatevs. But I can't quite wrap my mind around paying 2.75 for a starved tea bag, since I definitely wasn't paying for service or quickness. And yeah, I know it's SF and other places might charge this... At least Peets tries to hide the huge tea markup with two hefty bags. Needs one more person behind the counter. I decided I needed a quick cup of coffee for the long drive back to Santa Barbara and this was conveniently located right next to my friend's house. As soon as you step into this pleasant looking coffee shop on the street corner, you're hit by the sensational smell of brewed coffee and pastries. There's a huge selection of pastries and bagels, but I had ordered a sweet chai latte (with soy) and a white chocolate mocha for my friend. Lets just say, the soy chai latte tasted a lot like watered down soy milk with a hint of chai tea and the white chocolate mocha tasted a lot like ... sugared coffee. read more

This place is pretty cool, first time actually sitting in here and taking it all in. They have free wifi and pretty cool tunes playing. The guy in front of me is eating a pastry I want a bite of and my coffee is pretty good. Prices aren't crazy and it's not as packed as Starbucks. It's on ocean ave so there's a lot of traffic and parking is kind of hard to find if you don't have a ton of quarters. I parked in the Walgreens lot (tee-hee) and there's construction going on around the shop so your better off checking this place out on foot or on the train! :) read more

I came here a lot this summer, and I became quite a fan. The grilled chicken breast sandwich is amazing, and the drinks and pastries are decent. I really like the atmosphere here: clean, pleasantly worn in, good selection of newspapers, comfortable seats, the whole shebang. I'm not really that into the birds they have, but that's not too big of a deal. This is the perfect spot for a good lunch in a chill environment. read more

I used to live right by here and have frequented Java on Ocean several times. It's a quaint little place on Ocean that isn't a chain, very comfy feel, and great food! The breakfast burritos are bomb. The owners are really nice and friendly. This is one of the places I truly miss from when I used to live in the area, before Blockbuster got shut down and boarded up and Rite Aid went bye-bye...oh, Ocean avenue. Nice neighborhood coffee shop down the street from my house. Love the local vibe this place gives off as opposed to the cookie-cutter type coffee shops like Starbucks and Coffee Bean, which I am guilty of frequenting also. Despite living in the neighborhood for nearly 2 decades, I've never given a second thought to this place (I remember when it used to be like a pet shop or something of the sort at the location) until my friends from SoCal came to SF for a visit and showed them around my neighborhood. jam worthy. i think i have found my friendly neighborhood coffeeshop, and this is it. low key, warm with its lemon walls and tons of sunlight streaming in the windows, high super high ceilings and thriftstore couches, seating areas and tables spread about, it is what a coffeeshop experience should be. i had a soy latte, delicicious. i had one of their mediterranian bages, DELICIOUS. the bagel was one of the best bagels i've ever had. seriously. who knew? food fresh, healthy, staff friendly, pretty great laid back vibe and layout. all types of people up in it . so you don't feel rushed, it doesn't feel sterile, you don't feel like you need a cool card to be up inside of it. you get coffee, you relax, you read the paper you do what you do so well. that is it! read more

I go here on the weekends and notice the comfy couches in here along with the elevator music(although I don't always listen since I use my iPod) and Good selection of coffee, bottled drinks, and Mediterranean food. This place has it's problems but I like it. I don't care what it says about me, I like the atmosphere. It makes me feel like I'm in college again, and sitting on the sofa with a drink, snack, and a book is divine. I'll agree with people who say the chai is subpar. I've seen them make it, and they make is using a syrup that you can buy at safeway and make at home, for the cost of one cup of chai here. However, I've liked the hot cider I've gotten there, and been satisfied with their coffee (though I'm not a coffee afficionado). I also enjoy their "healthy smoothies" and love their baked goods. I will say that the service can be spotty. At times is fine, and at others they have actually forgotten about my order. My boyfriend had to wait ages for a breakfast burrito that was a huge dissapointment. Usually though, when I stick with a drink and a muffin or something, things are fine. read more

Cool place. I live 3 blocks away and like to come here when I need to study as they have 2 hrs of free wireless. Middle Eastern theme to it and they even have 2 canary cages sitting at different ends of the cafe which can be nice during the day if you dont mind the tweeting. Coffees pretty good but over priced like the food. One time I came in during the day and they had a KICK ASS band playing in the corner (forgot to ask their name, was kinda high at the time). Delicious and cute, this little coffee house serves good coffee and nice treats. The red velvet cakes and the chocolate biscotti are my personal favorite with a spicy chai with the finches singing in the back ground. I consider myself to be a coffee fanatic. Even though I go to Starbucks quite often cause it's consistent and quick, I'm always looking for a locally owned coffee shop with a good atmosphere, good service, good coffee, and good food. High standards, but I've found it. Java on Ocean is noticeable right away from the street. I've passed by it many times but never had time to go in. It's right on the corner with a couple outdoor tables. When you walk in, it's nice and spacey with lots of colors hitting you. Don't worry, none of it clashes and it's not overwhelming. The counter when you walk up, is so full of pastries and snack that you wonder how the counter could hold all of the weight. They have two fridges stocked with a large variety of bottled and canned drinks, so if you aren't in the mood for coffee or tea, they have it. The food menu is vast and has a nice spread. I personally haven't had a chance to try everything, but the chicken is my favorite. It's flavored with a nice spice. I had the chai which is Oregon Chai, the only syrup based chai I like. The only two problems I had here, which were very minor, was that their menu isn't fully updated. According to the owner, they just had some things discontinued, so he needs to take it off the menu. No biggie. And once when I asked for no tomatoes, I got tomatoes. For me no biggie. For the people who like browsing the internet or doing homework or reading, there are plenty of tables, couches, and seats here. The shop has a very homey feel to it, so you can feel comfortable here. Also, there is free wi-fi. It's not the best because I assume people outside of the cafe are using it as well. This is a great coffee shop, and you can bet that I'll be here on my lazy days with my laptop and trying something new each time off their menu read more

The gentlemen working were both friendly, and the atmosphere was enjoyable, complete with cute singing birds. I will definitely be back here, for the food and for a great place to study. I always seem to end up at this spot when my husband gets a haircut around the corner. It's a solid place to grab a cup of tea, read the newspaper, or get some work done. It's a little rustic/rough around the edges, and there always seem to be a lot of students there but they are usually trying to get their work done as well. There are a couple of birdies that peep from time to time, but it adds to the quirky ambiance. read more

I am studying here right now and I think the food is good but prices are a little high and not clear about prices or food contents which is why I am giving 3 stars instead of four. For example, my chicken sandwich ($7.00) did not come with sprouts or tomatoes as stated in the menu and I was charged $5.99 instead of $5.50 for my spinach pie as stated on the menu. This is a good study place but the next time I am back will probably just stick to the kabob wrap which was filling (7.99). read more

This cafe is considered one of the bigger cafes in the neighborhood. The cafe is bright and has cozy inside. However, I wish they can arrange the tables and chairs neatly. The tables and chairs are all over the place. Coffees are okay. However, their sandwiches are pretty good. read more

I work on Ocean Ave and there aren't a lot of great options for anything. This place would be mediocre almost anywhere else in the City, but here it's a stand out. Tiki facade, ok coffee and food and an inviting atmosphere with couches and a chirping parakeet. They could definitely take it up a notch but, for now, it works for me. read more
