This is a darling coffee shop. Great place to study/work. Fairly extensive menu - veggie friendly. Excellent coffee and tasty bagels.

Positives: I love the funky, homey atmosphere. The bird is delightful ( but may be lonely--what happened to his friend? He doesn't sing much any more). The day workers (owner? And another guy) are courteous. It's my favorite coffee shop / cafe for these reasons. Down sides: they need to clean better and more often. Food: mixed. I had a cup of soup recently that was mostly broth, though the flavor was good. Where was the barley and the veggies? It was pretty expensive for the tiny amount. The coffee is nothing to rave about. Definitely don't get the baklavah -- it's stale and not great quality. Same for the pastries. I go at least once a week for coffee simply for the atmosphere and nice staff, but the prices are too high for the cleanliness of the place and quality and amount of the food. read more

This cool little coffee shop provides an almost perfect ambiance for sitting down with a nice book, or friend, or just for some studying. The atmosphere inside is chic and hip, yet unpretentious and chill; you'll feel like you can just take off your shoes and kick back on one of the couches for a comfortable hour or two. Just saying of course... take off your shoes at your own risk of forgetting to put them back on! I hope I'm not starting a trend at Java.. I've been going to this coffee shop for about a year and a half now and I feel like now is a good time to review. First off I went in today and the guy at the register (who I heard is the owner) was an asshole. I asked for a pen and napkin then told me "What does this look like a library?" I used to like this place, until today. I had the most unfortunate experience today, while I was on a date, no less. While I have always been treated respectfully by the staff behind the counter, I was very turned off by the service they gave (or more like did not give) to my date. Granted, the prices are high---I paid $2 for a cup of tea, but I was willing to do b/c of the pleasant environment, etc.---and my date was somewhat aware of this. However, the manager behind the counter took offense when my date mildly questioned the price of a cup of coffee ($1.79). The manager started to yell at him and asked the manager (rightfully so), "What the f--- is your problem?" B/c he said that, the manager then told him to leave. I was unaware this was going on at the time, until my date told me that he was being kicked out. When I politely tried to ask if we could stay since he was w/ me, the manager was still telling him to leave. I think that this man acted in an inappropriate way. It's his establishment, and he's welcome to charge any price he likes for his menu...but also, he needs to recognize that good customer service does not come in the form of yelling and kicking people out just because they question those prices (which are high by comparison) or question your behavior. How about, oh, I don't know, politely saying, "That is the price. If you want something cheaper, there are sodas in the fridge." I know that I will not be coming back to this establishment unless I receive an apology and some offer of compensation (e.g. a complimentary drink) for both myself and my date. In the meantime, I will continue to spread the word for folks to avoid Java on Ocean, both for their high prices and atrocious customer service. read more

I love this place. Comfortable for working or socializing. Big windows bring in the light and the high ceiling gives that spacious feel. Nice selection of drinks and food. And birds in cages chirping. It's one of those special places that most reminds me of an earlier San Francisco. Sigh read more

FIRST OF ALL there is a fool that works there that does not have ANY basic and standard food safety knowledge; I'm taking not even wearing gloves when touching foods or washing hands after handling money at the register. This guy was super rude, unprofessional, unnecessarily snappy and kinda gave me the creeps to be honest. Bad, essentially non-existent, customer service. He's an old head with a bald spot and a totally low vibe. But, I'm not gonna be wack and give the whole establishment 1 star because the interior is super chill, designed really well and they got some birds which are dope. Also, the two girls working there are phenomenal workers and have a really good grasp on customer service and overall experience which made my visit a lot more enjoyable. One of them noticed that old head was being weird and stepped in and took our order, im guessing she's the manager. Whoever was working Saturday, December 28th at noon are incredible and I cannot stress enough how important customer experience is, and they totally work hard and understand that aspect of their job. Ok, Where to start....Java on Ocean is an ok place to do hw, read and do your regular coffee place activities, however, whatever you do, DO NOT eat the breakfast burrito, ( i mean its my fault for ordering a burrito at a coffee place, but it was one of the most inexpensive things in that menu at $4.50) it gave me the worst diarrhea of my life and it tasted horrible....i ate it cause i was broke and hungry. So, i ordered my burrito and asked the guy behind the counter to please substitute the gross cheddar cheese for Jack, he said yes, but are u in a hurry he asked, because its gonna take some time, am like ok, i will wait to have the luxury of the Jack cheese. So, i am there with my friend waiting for my burrito and half an hour pases by, then 45 min, and nothing. A woman comes in the door and orders the same thing, i take this oppty to ask the man behind the counter about my burrito, he is like : WHY DIDNT YOU REMIND ME? i was like Say what? is it my job to remind you? so not its my fault? he is like no, i am not saying is your fault or my fault, but u should have reminded me. whateverr. The burrito was watery, with cheese and egg OMG it was gross i only ate half of it cause i was hungry and broke....so, whatever you do dont order that aberration. I can't believe what just happened. I had my toddler with me and it's raining outside, and if you are in SF you know the air is like ICE outside this week after dark. We got it "to go" and I waited around just for the guy to say, "oh, I forgot to make it"! We already missed our train and that's why we came inside (in the warmth) in the first place! I should have known what to expect from this place. Just because the ambiance and warmth made me think it would be a safe haven for myself and my cold and quiet daughter, from the time we walked in to the time we LEFT, the guy behind the counter was on HIS PHONE via ear piece! Of COURSE he didn't hear what I ordered! Just to top it off, I saw a rat crossing the street and get run over by a car right outside, which made me spit out the bite I was chewing and toss the last 3/4 of my wrap into the trash. What a bummer. All before missing the NEXT train. I wish my coffee was "remembered", because my daughter & I FROZE at the muni stop waiting for the 3rd train since we surely weren't making the mistake of taking shelter inside the Java on Ocean Coffee House again. read more

While I appreciate having a local cafe on the stretch of Ocean Avenue I call home, Java's prices are absolutely outrageous. The cost of their (unmarked) drinks, cookies and other cafe staples will shock you to the point of anger. On a recent visit I was told that the same six-ounce Yoplait yogurt that sells for $0.60 at the Target store on the next block would be close five dollars and that a single packaged madeline cookie would cost as much as a three-pack of the same brand of madelines at the Starbucks inside the same nearby Target. As other reviewers point out, having a bird dropping feces in a cage all day long is a questionable hygiene choice for an establishment that serves food. I love to support great small businesses, especially those that brighten Ocean Avenue, but if you're looking for a nice cafe to people watch and enjoy a great espresso drink or sandwich, I highly recommend you walk down to the Fog Lifter Cafe at Ocean and Faxon, where you will find much better food and beverage offerings, far more reasonable prices and a cleaner, nicer place to sit. Ocean Ave has so many memories that I hold dear and close to me, being this is the street I walked everyday to go to school since I was in preschool. Now going to city college a few blocks down from this cafe, I've been brought back and back again to this spot. I don't know when this place opened but I've only ever had amazing memories of it as far as I remember. Ocean has such a diverse and ever evolving community that Hassam (the owner, forgive me if I spelled that wrong) brings together with coffee and food. Somehow he remembers so many peoples names, and seems like he's always meeting someone new. He's very welcoming and his coffee game is so spot on, I've never had a drink that wasn't perfect. The overall vibe is so welcoming, if you like laid back cafes, or somewhere to think, this is the place. And if ya can't vibe here, I don't know where you will. I've explored many cafes and by far this is one of my favorite places in all of San Francisco. I've watched the coffee business expand and become so popular in the city. There's so many new "high end" cafes, with the best technology that still don't meet up to this for me. being a trained barista , and working with coffee almost everyday, I can comfortably say, this is quality. really, really like this place. i have been in a few different times, every time with my same friend. it's a really great place to get comfy and just relax while enjoying your bev/food. today we split a chicken hummus wrap that was sooo good. all the veggies were very fresh!!!! also tried the morning dew smoothie for the first time, mmmm! the owner is a lovely guy. every time we have come in and he is there, he has made it a point to chat to us and make sure we're satisfied with our drinks. i have even brought the little one i nanny in and he was soo sweet when talking to her. very nice spot!! and to all you fellow chai drinkers- they offer both a sweet and spicy mixture. i've only had the spicy but mm, very delish. -1 star for the bathroom.......there is so much foot traffic on ocean, especially with city college right up the road so i don't blame 'em but it's always a bummer when you fall in love with a shop and the restroom is nast. read more

I went here because it looked so welcoming. The warmth and decor makes this cafe appealing. I ordered the green tea matcha latte and a bagel. The price of a bagel with cream cheese was $3.75 which is ridiculous. I still paid it, but that's way too overpriced for a simple snack. Then, the latte never had a recorded price,it was just made up at the the time. The staff was nice, that's a good thing. I did have to laugh out loud when I saw the size of the bagel. It seemed like it shrunk 3x its original size after it was toasted. I just felt ripped off. ....I'm not trying to be a diva but I won't be coming here again. I think the best thing about this place is the space and the location. Like other folks mentioned, it seemed like the dude behind the counter who was there when I went would rather be anywhere else than working there. Maybe his dad forced him to work in the family coffee shop, who knows. . .. If I were in a hurry I would have just left, but I just needed to kill some time so I sat down until the brother was done making someone else's sandwich at a very leisurely pace. I think he may have wished that I would just leave, but then I ordered a bagel -- they have many different options about what to put in your bagel, and what I got was not exactly what I ordered, and again, I'm sure it's b/c the dude didn't give a sh*t, but again, luckily i was not in a prickly mood. It seems like a lot of their supplies are yes from Costco and they're not afraid to show it. It was easy to find parking on a Sunday morning. I liked the atmosphere, but the coffee was horrible. All i could smell was the cardboard from the cup and the sleeve made my hand smell like plastic. The coffee was bland and taste less, I much rather prefer Starbucks coffee. But I did love the way they have actual metal spoons instead of those wooden Popsicle sticks that Starbucks and other coffeehouses have. read more

My buddy Ray and I have been coming to this place for the past 6 months. The owner, Hossam, is always unfailingly gracious and kind. The coffee is great, and their varied food selection is excellent. We particularly liked the Breakfast burrito and the Turkey, egg, and cheese bagel. Ray always get the strawberry, peach and banana smoothie and he thinks that it's delicious. It attracts plenty of customers, but we've always been able to find a seat in the spacious and comfortable layout. Hossam's great demeanor and friendliness is a major plus for us. Expensive drinks. I think they make 10X the profit from selling tea you can get at Target. However, if you need a great place to study, don't mind spending your hard earn money, this is it because Ocean Ave does not have a lot of study friendly area. However, the owner may make a comment about you not buying more stuff and staying there for hours studying. They are just a business after all. The owner is in general nice, but he is NOT nice to everyone. Of course, the more money you spend, the more nicer he will be nice to you. I guess that's just life. The food taste good for people who like non greasy food, but other than their veggies, I don't think their meat are that fresh. I've seem food flies hanging out on their pastries before.
