Unfortunately, this was the low point in my meal. They are measley pieces that don't taste like much. + SOP BUNTUT GORENG ($11): Fried Oxtail Soup. Came with 4 oxtail on the side with rice and krupuk. The oxtail tasted good, but there just wasn't much meat on it. The soup wasn't as good as the one my mom makes (she wanted to order this to compare), and the veggies were from like...a frozen peas and carrots mix. + NASI BUNGKUS: The star of the show and enough reason for me to rate this place higher, even though the other stuff was not great. This is my go to Indonesian restaurant when I'm craving for Indo food and don't want to make it myself lol I guess they have raised the price and given less portion than I remember. But overall it's good not the best but it's not as far as other Indonesian cafes or restaurants. We love the snacks that they have every weekend and basically bungkus. But watch out for the sambel or hot sauce, they are dangerously hot and it lingers lol but it's so good that you keep eating even if you are sweating and crying because of the hotness. read more

Just ok. The nasi campur was not memorable like what I was used to eat in Indonesia, not one bit...the chicken was dry and stale, rendang was strangely flat in flavor. And the portion size was too small for this restaurant being in the US! Service is okay and selections in the menu look quite decent. But there's something missing here. I came here with my husband to try out their famous banana leaf wrapped chicken and rice, but they only serve that on the weekends. We ordered the #1 chicken dish and fried noodles with pork instead. Both dishes were packed with flavor and the noodles had a little sweetness to them, which I'm a fan of. The chicken dish came with a choice of sour or coconut soup. Once you check in on yelp, you get a choice of a free "juice box" sized jasmine tea or soda. I ordered the #1, a combination plate which consisted of coconut soup, a chicken drumstick, some spicy beef, shrimp crackers and rice. Overall everything tasted pretty good especially the chicken but the spicy beef was a little too salty for me. I wish they would include a little more rice so it could help with the saltiness of the spicy beef. Nothing bad, but nothing too memorable... I recommend this place as a Indonesian comfort food restaurant that offers wide range of the cuisine! We ordered the Cha Kway Teow which was really delicious and came in a generous portion. On top of that, we also ordered the Udang Goreng Mentega, I would say this is just so-so but it has a unique local taste. And also pictured was the Ketoprak Jakarta which had a rich but not too thick peanut sauce on top of it. Since we came in a large group, we also ordered other dishes (I forgot to take pictures). Nasi Goreng Combination was my group's favorite but my favorite got to be the Soto Ayam. Java Spice dishes came in big portions for you to share around! I highly recommend coming here. Parking can be difficult in that plaza (Tastea and BCD plaza). The first time I tried Indonesian I got some kind of noodles buy they were a little too oily for me (from a different restaurant) so I decided to try the Gado Gado salad and it did not disappoint! The house-made peanut sauce caught my attention. Lots of lettuce and bean sprouts topped with tomato, hard boiled egg, gado gado sauce (thick peanut sauce), and shrimp chips. I finished the entire thing which surprised me because of how big it was but I must have really like it! Lol. My bf ordered the Nasi Goreng Special and Durian Smoothie. He seemed to like his dish but I think we wanted to try the Banana Leaf item which is what they are known for. A simple and delicious mom/pop restaurant located in Yes Plaza. It's usually pretty empty but don't let that fool you. I ordered takeout and it was ready in about 10 minutes which is quick! I got the bakmi goreng combination noodles and the nasi goreng special that has 2 chicken satays. The portions were HUGE.. which is great since I'll have yummy leftovers. For as long as I can remember, Java Spice has been my go-to Indonesian restaurant. The owners are always so kind and generous. It's nice to be able to feel like you're back home. I've been living in California for almost 10 years now, and Java Spice not only delivers delicious Indonesian food - it also makes me feel at home. The portions are, in my opinion, great. Price-wise, it's reasonable. Of course, back home every food there is cheaper. But in the US, especially in California, like I said - reasonably priced. There is wide variety of selection to choose from. You also get to see the collection of snacks and drinks they sell by the register. Overall, absolutely love this place & always recommend my non-Indonesian friends to check this place out if they want to try some bomb Indonesian food. One thing I'd like to suggest: Please consider using UberEats. I know that people can order through Doordash and Grubhub, but due to location, those food delivery services don't offer delivery from Rowland Heights to Fullerton. First of all, their Yelp check in deal for free teh botol (some kind of oolong tea) is no longer valid. They should have just take it out from Yelp. I was so sad because this was the first time ever I was disappointed with Indonesian food. Really...legitimately sad. Empek empek (see photo): MADE UP FOR THE SOTO BETAWAI x10. It was fried so perfectly and even in the vinegar sauce it was still crispy. The level of spiciness was medium to medium-hot...the spicy/sour taste was perfect. Cah Kangkung (see photo): Served up on a sizzling skillet a simple seasoned and stir fried water spinach was disguised and presented as much, much, more. Second to the pempek (pempek is my favorite Indonesian dish so if that didn't exist, this would've been my first) the cah kangkung was flavorful, seasoned perfectly, juicy, and mouth-watering. Eat it with some steamed rice and wow, it could easily be devoured without a second thought. This is one way for me to describe "love in four syllables:" IN-DO-NE-SIAN. The lasting impression? Indonesian Sweet Sweet Chicken! A great place to get Indonesian. I had the house special Ayam Kalasan (sweet chicken). I am not a fan of fried rice but tried it here. I ordered nasi goreng babat (Fried Rice with tripe). It was a pleasant surprise. It was pretty good! I want to try my favorite Indonesian dish here but they only serve it on weekends. A buddy of mine mentioned that they would take me on the weekend. I tried one of the curry dishes and it was ok. Nothing bad and nothing great. Just something in the middle. I also tried the avocado drink. They have their own style and it tasted chocolately. Maybe it was coffee. The ice coffee I had was a much better choice. Everything was pretty reasonably priced. When all is said and done, I would totally like to come back and try more dishes. Kudos to Yelper Maggie who referred this place to me. Came here on a weekend to eat the Nasi Bungkus. I miss eating this dish and I can't find it done well in OC. The bungkus was pretty good -- rendang was flavorful and tender while the chicken wasn't bad either. The young jackfruit tasted so much like artichoke I was confused for a moment. This is decent Bungkus if you're craving it. We also ordered the kang kung belacan with quail eggs -- so flavorful and it arrives on a sizzling platter. I can eat this with a bowl of rice. I'm salivating just thinking about it. The Cha Tauge -- stir fried bean sprouts with dried fish was SO tasty. I can never get it to stay crunchy when I make it at home. This definitely was a winner! I've been here several times so I will highlight some of the dishes that I've had. Nasi Bungkus- a must order- I love the combination of chicken, tofu, egg, rendang, and all the spices. nasi means rice, bungkus means wrapped. so everything is wrapped in a banana leaf. Awesome! Otak Otak- The fish cake with sauce is decent, its wrapped in leaves to add flavor. Gado Gado- a tofu dish with shrimp chips, veggies, this yummy sweetish brown sauce, and other stuff. Satay- good, tastes like how it should. Lontong Cempur (idk if I spelled it right)- Also delicious. Lontong is basically a rice cake and cempur means mixed, so its mixed with vegetables and all this random deliciousness. Nasi Ayam (Rice chicken)- what I order when there is no nasi bungkus, so basically the weekdays. Soto Ayam- its not bad, but my mother makes it better at home :p There are several more dishes I can't think of right now, but this location definitely has prettty good spices for indonesian food in SoCal. Beware of the green chili sauce ... it's super spicy...amazingly spicy...I love it! That's why their drink #1 goes so well with this dish. There weren't too many people here during peak lunch time which was a little worry-some but also convenient since we didn't have to wait. I'd say that their prices are reasonable and their menu selection is good. They have rice dishes, combinations, soups, and dessert drinks. My coworker got their lunch special shrimp chicken noodles which was really good. I liked that one a lot. I got the Nasi campur, but it was alright. If you're in the mood for Indo food, this is probably the only one in Rowland Heights that I know of. It's worth it to come give it a try.
