Of course, I had to order their rendang dish with their nasi kuning (yellow rice)/coconut rice mix and side of tempe. And of course, es cendol was a must! It was absolutely delicious!! Kedai is a beautiful cafe located in a shopping plaza, there was plenty of parking on Sunday afternoon. I love the decor of the cafe, it's very homey but also exuberates the love for Indonesia. It's a loving mom and pop kind of business! We took our food to go because they looked swamped. We ordered the special plate, the gado-gado vegetarian dish, and a bunch of pastries from their small baked goods section. The special combo rice plate included a piece of chicken on a bed of shredded cabbage, what looked like two types of rice, some beef rendang, a side of curry that had green beans, onions, and chayote. And a nice fried boiled egg. I might be missing a meat, but it was a really wonderful sampler of some of their delicious dishes and thought it was great. The gado gado was actually delicious, I love their peanut sauce that goes great with the tofu, melon/radish, and egg! The cocopandan soda was pretty good, tasted like a cream soda/italian cream soda but when you get that cocopandan froth it's definitely more distinct! I don't think it has a strong pandan coconut flavor but it's good! I actually really liked their pastries--we had the Risole, Lemper, Dutch roll, and banana chocolate roll. When we come back I'd really like to try some noodle dishes and their Kaya toast! Risole was delicious, the roll is soft and tastes like a chicken pot pie, it comes with this absolutely addicting orange sauce, which was my personal favorite from the ones we tried. The lemper was warm, sticky rice well made with a sort of curry chicken inside. We had more of the addicting orange sauce. The Dutch roll is beef and kale mix, reminded me of a meat pie, it was still crispy on the outside. The banana chocolate roll is exactly what you'd expect! Pretty good. I have had my eye on this place for awhile. Conveniently located off Mountain Avenue there's plenty of parking. The interior has so much Indonesian character. It isn't a large place. They weren't very busy on a weeknight. Service is self serve. You order and they bring the food to you. Being from Singapore, Indonesian food brings me back there. I've been to many Indonesian restaurants. I've been to Indonesia. My parents have been here but it's been awhile. I really wanted to like this place. The prices are pretty high for what you get. We popped by and split the Nasi Kamplit Spesial (special combo rice plate) It easily fed two people and was delicious with beef rendang, turmeric and coconut rice, turmeric fried chicken, spicy egg, a stir fried sweet potato and tofu, and a veggie curry soup. The owners are sweet and nice, I was able to speak with them on occasions about my trips to Indonesia and the differences. Sop Bon Tut (ox tail soup) was my lifesaver there so to find a place locally that has the authentic flavors was amazing. They also serve cafe items like coffees and teas, various seating areas and a nice light atmosphere fit for comfort. Curry, authentic (if you've been to Indo) as all the food. I always ask for chopped chilis, Birds Eye for the extra spice, and the turmeric fried rice is always cooked well. Stopped by recently and had a great experience. I ordered a hot latte along with the chicken skewers and rice, and everything came out really tasty. The latte was perfect and the food was flavorful. What I really liked was the environment. It's not too loud, so it's a great spot if you want to sit down, work, or just relax for a bit. I really enjoyed The flavors. However, the beef rendang was a little cold. Actually, I had to warm my food up when I got home and it was only a five minute drive. The chicken was hot though; It was cooked fresh and tasted great. The rice was amazing.The tofu was, shockingly, really really good. I'm not a big tofu person. But this was delicious. Their hot sauce/ chili sauce was really good. It tasted like it had fish sauce in it. I'll definitely recommend this place. The place isn't too big with a couple of tables, mostly tables for two. They do reserved tables. The day we were there, they had a reserved table set up for 8 people. You order and pay upfront. Kedai also sell some pastries. We started off with the Risoles, which is a chicken roll and we also got a banana chocolate roll. Both items were really good. It has good flavors and not oily. We also ordered the Kaya toast which was delicious. For our entrees, we got the Oxtail soup, turmeric chicken wings, beef rendang, and chicken satay. My favorite of all the dish was the chicken satay. The chicken satay was cooked well. It wasn't overly char and you can taste the flavors. The dish also came with a spicy stir-fry tempe and tofu but I thought it was okay but i did love the jalapeno in it. I love that you can choose between regular rice, turmeric rice, or half and half. We went with half so we can taste both. I also enjoy the oxtail soup. The meat just felt off the bone and the soup was very comforting. The beef rendang was okay, it was a bit harder to chew. I really wanted to try their chicken porridge but they were sold out by the time we arrived. Its just something I need to come back for. The service was okay. Be patient. Love this mom n pop Indonesian cafe! I visited this cafe for lunch while on the way to apple picking in Oak Glen from LA and me and my friends' experience here was great! We all opted for family-style since we wanted to try a little bit of everything. Here's what we got: - Iced Pandan Latte w/ Oat Milk: This was a great pandan latte that married the pandan and espresso flavors well. I've had many pandan lattes where I only really taste the espresso flavor, but this one pulled it off nicely. It was perfectly sweet and gave me the boost I needed for the day. - Special Combo Rice Plate (Nasi Komplit): Loved all the components of this dish. The fried chicken had a good chicken fat flavor, but I wish it was crispier, but liked how it easily came off the bone. The beef rendang was tender and had a nice coconut flavor. Came here on a Sunday at noon, and the place was completely empty the entire 1.5 hours we stayed. It's tucked inside a strip mall with plenty of parking. The space has a bright, minimal setup with one long row of tables--more of a coffee shop vibe than a full restaurant. Only saw one worker which I'm guessing is the owner, but service was smooth, and the food came out in a reasonable time. We got the Nasi Komplit Spesial, kaya toast, and a side of sate ayam and bibi to share. The rice plate was a good sampler--beef rendang had good flavor but was a bit tough, fried chicken and spicy egg was solid, tempe was a little too soft and plain, the vegetable curry was a little watery and bland, and tumeric rice was good. **December 2024: Weekend Afternoon Visit** I don't eat Indonesian often, but when I find an Indonesian restaurant I almost always want to try it out since their flavor profile utilizes different aromatic spices than Chinese cuisine. The restaurant is located in an unassuming shopping strip mall in Upland and has beautifully crafted dishes. My friend and I each ordered an entree, but shared everything family style. My good friend suggested we try Indonesian cuisine. We are glad to be able to try it! When you go inside, you will see the vibrant green wall with a banana tree painting. There are also nice wooden windows hanging on the side. Simple yet eye-catching. There is private parking available and also you have to pay for your order/meal first at the cash register. We had the following dishes: * Bubur Ayam - It is rice porridge with chicken, green onions, fried shallot, pickles cabbage and hard-boiled egg. It also has a lot of Chinese donuts on top. This is the first time I tried this. I had side of garlic chips. What a savory and yummy dish. * Sate Babi Plate - This pork satay with pickled cucumber, tomato slices and cucumber slices. My friend opted for Nasi Kuning which is turmeric rice and also instead of sweet soy sauce she preferred peanut sauce. This also came with a side of garlic crackers. It was also delicious. Inside, they have a homey setup with about 4-5 tables for seating. As for their menu, they have a great selection of different rice, soup, and sate dishes along with pastries too. This place is so amazing! It's in a very packed shopping center but it's easy to find. When I walked it I immediately noticed how clean it was. It was immaculately decorated and even had a little market in the front to buy some Indonesian snackies. As soon as we got to the counter a nice gentleman asked us if we wanted a menu and that when we were ready we could order at the counter. We found a seat and looked at the extensive menu. I got the chicken soup and the rest of my party got the oxtail soup. I also ordered the fermented salad and the tumeric wings. Within 15 minutes of ordering we got our food and we dug right in. The chicken soup was well flavored and so fresh. The rice was topped with crispy shallots and all the soups came with it along with some shrimp chips. The oxtail was tender and all the veggies were flavorful. The wings were a dry seasoning but juicy inside. The sauce was spicy but perfect. The salad was a spicy almost gingerlike dressing and it was super good. The owner Stannig came to check in with us and she was so nice. She said she brought her recipes from her mother. The *only* reason I stumbled over this cute little Indonesian cafe was because I was looking for Southern style oxtail. Well, this ain't it, but I suppose you could at least say Indonesia is to the south of us, and they do have an abundance of their own version of soul. I have little to no knowledge of their cuisine, but we have never let that stop us. We hopped in our car without a second thought to the 60 miles we would be adding to our odometer. Stanny and Sebastián, the owners, are a hard-working, soft-spoken, friendly couple who immigrated from Indonesia to this country to discover the American Dream. They both went to Cal State Long Beach, where they majored in subjects that have absolutely nothing to do with restaurants. But lucky for you and me (if you are curious enough to try Kedai), you will be glad they chose to do this instead. Their culinary talents amaze me. Oxtail soup (Sop Buntut). Imagine a lovely big bowl of unadulterated, beefy broth with carrots, potato, green onion, and two huge oxtail bones full of meat cooked so perfectly that Grandpa wouldn't need his choppers put in. Perfect for fussy eaters, this is also well suited for a chilly winter evening. A bowl of steamed white rice accompanies this dish, as well as some tasty, super thin crackers (padi oat) they make fresh in-house. It's a delightful combination that I knew would guarantee Mr B's happy mindset. Beef Rendang (Rendang Sapi). Outstanding and so flavorful, this is described as a curry dish. But this is not like spicy hot Indian curries we know. The rich brown gravy, made of coconut milk along with a complex (but not spicy) combination of herbs and spices, creates an exciting dish. On one side of my plate were tender beef chunks, and on the other side, bites of tofu, tempeh, and omelet, all dressed in the same gravy. I did not realize that I was not eating all meat at first. The plate included my choice of steamed coconut rice or turmeric rice. I chose the turmeric style, which turned out to be a delicious, yellow coconut rice, topped with crispy fried onions. I loved every bite! This is also served with a freshly fried shrimp cracker about the size of a mini tortilla. Sensational, all of it. We also tried a crispy, stuffed potato ball called Kroket. It came hot out of the fryer with a small cup of a creamy, pink, tangy-sweet sauce that I have no idea what it was. Yum! I could not keep my eyeballs from staring greedily at all the other savory and sweet desserts and delicacies in the glass showcases. These, too, are all created from scratch in their tiny kitchen. I have no doubt I will be returning to snack on some of these along with a good coffee drink from their coffee bar. The menu is small but so varied and unique. Not at all your typical cafe. They even have a couple of fun breakfast items I will definitely need to look into further. Ube-Banana or Peanut-Hazelnut pancakes anyone? They also make a shaved ice treat called Cendol (pronounced chen-dal) made with coconut milk, condensed milk, jackfruit, and colorful pandan jelly that is similar to Thai and Filipino iced desserts. The food as always was really really good. Every time I have a chance I come with somebody to know this place. This time my son, we tried the pastel, kroket, steamed buns,kayak toast, honey comb cake. The owner is very attentive. Very happy with my favorite place to breakfast. Authentic and unique Indonesian restaurant. There's no other competitors nearby. Yes, foods/beverages/pastries/desserts are all available. Mom and pop small family cafe type restaurant with a few tables and chairs. Tiny retail space, but you can dine inside this very small restaurant/cafe. Huge public parking lot in a retail/office strip with a Grocery Outlet grocery store down the block. Staffs are owners. You can order strong coffee here, grab a small bite, enjoy some sweets, or you can actually sit down to dine in after you order from their menus and pay at front counter. In Asia and Europe, you can pay upfront before sitting down. Saw some Dutch pastries here. Expect under $4 each pastry/sweets. Under $20 per main entree. Not the cheapest in prices, but decent. They have a huge variety of food items to choose from. Owner is attentive and efficient. Set meals are absolutely delicious and this is the only spot where you can get them. Bubur Ayam chicken porridge was excellent. Vegetarian tofu rice plate was made to perfection in taste. The soup is amazingly delicious as well. Food presentation was on point and portions were generous. Iced coffee was very strong too. Must love everything about this authentic Indonesian cafe/restaurant. Few decorations are on the walls and gender neutral public restroom is available. They really keep it simple here, but food quality is great. Worth stopping here. Indonesian sweets can be found here. Lots of good tea beverages are at front counter display too. It feels original here. I hope they stay in business and continue to provide good Southeast Asia/Indonesian foods for many more years to come. Soup was my favorite. We will come back to try other items in future. 100% recommend this lovely breakfast/brunch/ lunch spot. I am so glad I came here. Indonesian pastries and sweets. And so many lunch options. I came here with my husband for some breakfast. We each got two pastries and coffee. I absolutely LOVE that they have pourover coffees too! Plenty of seating indoors. Really clean atmosphere, friendly service, and lovely decor. read more

I don't live relatively close to this cafe but, considering how few and far between Southeast Asian restaurants there are in the inland area, I decided to make the trek. Kedai is a small cafe but with a very cozy atmosphere and cute piano music playing at your typical coffeehouse level. The male staff at the cashier was so patient and calm. Much appreciated if you are unfamiliar to this cuisine, don't be afraid to ask all the questions! Although it is a cafe per say, you can enjoy a nice dinner and a desert. Their curry was one of the best curries I have ever had. A perfect balance between spicy and sweet. The chicken satay cooked and seasoned to perfection. I'm obsessed with coconut so I loved the touch of coconut flakes here and there. I also tried their rice porridge to go, which is such a great standard for comfort food. If you are still hesitant after all I have had to say, at least try their delectable deserts and snacks! They have a lot of options for those who want semi-sweet pastries like their chewy fried sesame balls and pandan honeycomb cake (rice-based). Honestly, where else can you get these in such a convenient manner! This is one of my favorite spots in all of Socal and I highly urge you to stop by Kedai Indonesian Cafe. read more
