This is one of our go-to breakfast places. We come occasionally for happy hour, but weekend breakfast is where it's at. Highlights include uber-inexpensive breakfast cocktails (Saturdays and Sundays feature $2.50 Bloody Mary's and Mimosas, respectively), solid diner-style breakfast standards, and a massive, gooey and delicious cinnamon roll. As you would anticipate with a breakfast place, substitutions are freely accepted, so with a little creative reading of the menu, you can pretty much get whatever you want. I particularly love the sausage "sandwich", an open faced buttermilk biscuit with sausage patty, country gravy, and egg (scrambled are standard, but I opt for mine lightly poached, rendering this dish almost like a hybrid between biscuits and gravy and eggs benedict). Coffee is standard-issue, but is unfailing fresh, warm, and regularly replenished. Water glasses never reach bottom. Service is relaxed, and in the heart of the weekend rush can be a bit slow, but servers are almost always friendly, and regulars are treated like family. The dining room is typically packed with families and groups of friends--6-8 tops are common, and account for some of the delay you may experience with seating. Ambiance in the dining room is Spartan, but friendly. The attached bar, which (hint, hint) almost never has a wait for breakfast, is "colorful", but friendly. If we are going sans children, this is our preferred option. One note: Jay Berry's make much ado of their "Formaggi" sauce (a sort of extra cheesy alfredo). I find it mediocre and a detriment to almost every item it is served with. Several others I've been here with love it, but for me, it's empty calories: Bland, banal, and best avoided. read more

We came here for breakfast on a sunday morning. They weren't incredibly busy but they had a fair number of people for breakfast. The first thing I noticed was the server's uniforms. They all wore Jay Berry Shirts with somewhat brash statements on the back like "You order what you want, you eat what you get". Not exactly my style. The breakfast menu was one page, and fairly basic. I ordered the Denver omlet, and wasn't really impressed. It was ham, cheese, onions and peppers. Pretty bland, I added salt, pepper and even tobasco to try and give it some flavor, but ended up only eating half. The hashbrowns had potential, but were pretty undercooked. I was taking the scenic route to my friend's apartment (then again, isn't everything in Seattle scenic?) and we spotted this cafe. My friend's coworker had recommended the spot, said he came nearly everyday, so we gave it a try. The place was empty when we entered, since it seemed like it was in the middle of nowhere. There appeared to be a basement for a bar, but we didn't venture down there. The place was clean, a little old fashioned. All we had was a hot tea (plenty of variety here) and a small Jay Berry special pizza. I forget what was on the pizza, but it was definitely delicious. One of the best pizzas I've ever had, still one of the best when eaten cold. It was cheap too. The service was pretty good, since there really wasn't anyone else there. Found this place when googling for local breakfast. Didn't want the traditional chain breakfast places. They have $5 specials, the portion seemed small, but once you start eating, it's not small anymore. I had the "lighter" waffle w/ 1 egg and 2 slices of bacon. Then I added the biscuit and gravy on the side. So yummy. However, if you aren't a sausage liker, you may not enjoy the gravy. Once again the plate seemed small when it arrived, but holy moly. I've come here for breakfast probably 4-5 times this year. We keep giving it a go since it's so close to our house. The exterior is a good example of what you're going to get inside. The outside looks like it needs a little attention, as you will when you enter. Weekends are pretty busy, so I get that there might be a wait. However, don't expect to be acknowledged by any of the staff. I got the feeling that I was bothering them by showing up. On most occasions, it will take anywhere from 5-15 minutes to get your check after you've asked for it. Upsides: Their eggs benedict is pretty tasty, and I enjoy that they offer a "light" menu for those of us who cannot finish a heaping plate of food. Today, I ordered the pancakes. Big mistake. I needed a steak knife to cut through the crispy, dense pancakes. And the bacon was way over-done. Resembled the consistency of Baco's bacon bits. And the first thing I tasted in the scrambled eggs was butter. The pancakes also came with 4 table spoons of butter and maybe 3 tablespoons of syrup. Nice family environment. We stopped by on a Friday around 6pm (wife,me, 6yr & 1yr old) The wait to get a table and first touch by staff were both very reasonable. We ordered calamari and drinks. Manny's, O'Douls and OJ. Everything was just fine. We ordered our meals. I had the lasagna, which was very good and a nice size portion. Wife and son shared the Angle Hair pasta with meat balls and an extra italian sausage. They both gave two thumbs up! Pricing was in line with expectations and quality.
