Had three gentlemen help me in late April of 2018 to move from a 2 bedroom, 3rd floor walk up in Lincoln Park to a 1 bedroom, 5th floor building with elevator in Lakeview. Was extremely seamless and the guys worked hard and moved fast. Have to give major props and credit to Terry who was clearly leading the charge and worked smart. Perfect sized truck, guys were prepared and had good ideas. I will say I was disappointed after settling in weeks later to find several of my nice pieces of furniture that weren't wrapped as well were dinged pretty bad to the point where I will need to sand and refinish/paint them. So, wish I would have bought some more protection or requested it be included in my quote. These guys are extremely friendly and very efficient/prepared but if you have nice furniture that you know will get dinged you should take the extra precaution to wrap your stuff. Assume the guys will get the job done well and quick at a good price but your stuff might get hussled a bit too harshly in the process. read more

I spoke to another company that quoted me at $600+ for our local move, and they weren't really willing to budge on it. When I called Jay Movers, the office manager, BK Lewis, was extremely helpful and friendly, he was able to adjust the expenses of the move to fit our budget, and he kept the lines of communication open for any questions and needs leading up to the move. I hired Jay Movers after receiving a referral from a friend. I spoke with BK in the front office, he gave me a quote and was able to accommodate my requested moving date. We've used Jay Movers twice now. Once when moving from one 2 bed condo to another and recently when moving into a single family home. We had so so much stuff (and some VERY heavy furniture!) and I was worried about not fitting everything in the truck or having enough people to do the move. BK was super flexible and upped our crew and our time slot the day prior to fit two trips and a crew of four instead of three. On top of that, we couldn't find one of our moving boxes almost a week after moving in. I called and BK rounded up the move foreman to speak with me and go over where things were left in the home. Sure enough after his advice, we found the box! Right where he said it would be. With everyone going above and beyond I would definitely use them if we are ever unfortunate enough to have to move again (fingers crossed this was it for at least 30 years). TLDR: Both times the crew was incredibly professional, friendly, quick and efficient. More than that, the crew each time has been helpful in packing and prepping those weird furniture items you don't know how to wrap up so they can travel safely between the homes. We are a small family that moves often, always within Chicago. This last move (in February) was the third time we have used Jay Movers. Obviously, if we have used the same company three times, we are very happy. We have had Jay Movers move us from a tiny coach house with rickety stairs, up to a 3rd floor walk up. Then from that 3rd floor walk up to a bungalow. Then from the bungalow to a mid rise elevator building. I can definitely say we have had them move us to/from just about every type of housing that is common in Chicago. Each time they have moved us, they have been careful to protect the walls and worked quickly and efficiently. As professional movers, they also have carts with wheels, wardrobe boxes, and wheeled dollies. The equipment and experience makes hiring them a no brainer. They have moved six foot couches over railings, up stairs, and even took the door off the hinges to fit them in/out of the bungalow. BK is very accurate with his quotes, there are no "surprise" random charges/shakedown fees at the end, and the crews just go with the flow. For our last move, the street in front of our building was closed and ripped up by the city, as well as the side street next to our building. Then, we found out the tile was being redone in the lobby of our building. They were very mellow about all the work arounds. Our previous move had a few glitches too (a group of scam artists trying to get things off the moving truck). The guys handled it all like professionals. We highly recommend them! read more

This was the single best moving experience I've ever had. Scheduling is easy, and BK (the office manager) is a complete professional. He made the process easy and very clear. I was originally scheduled for the 3-6pm time slot on July 31, but the guys called the night before and said they would be able to come EARLY. I was thrilled! I had an AMAZING experience with this moving company. I was moving a first floor 1 bedroom to a second floor 2 bedroom, so i got 3 movers for a minimum of 2.5 hours. The minimum estimate they gave me was exactly what I ended up paying (plus tip obviously because they were AMAZING.) I was moving on that freaky April 27 snowstorm and it was snowing the entire time and none of my things got damaged. They did an incredible job in the absolute worst weather. Also: I have LOTS of plants (like 50 small plants and 10-20 large plants) and they did an incredible job being gentle with my plants and moving them extremely safely. None of them got damaged which is incredible, because I was ready to lose about ~25% of them to the stress of moving. Overall I would recommend this moving company to the highest degree. They exceeded my expectations and I paid exactly the quote they gave me, plus tip. I am so impressed with Jay movers and will definitely be working with them in the future. read more

I can't recommend the team at Jay Movers enough - from the front office (BK) to the 3 guys who managed my very challenging move (Jose, Oscar & Michael). To start, I moved into a very challenging 4 floor walk up with no elevator access. Every other mover I got a quote from allocated a team of 2 men and a few of them quoted higher. This is important because I got on the phone with BK and he urged me to trust him that this move was tricky and it needs a team of 3 even though everyone else was quoting 2. The price was well within the average (maybe slightly higher) but definitely not the highest. BK was absolutely right!! The 3 all stars showed up on time and like an army of well trained soldiers started and ENDED the move ON TIME. Moved all my stuff up 4 flights of stairs. On a warm day during the COVID pandemic (so wearing masks)!!! This is critical because now, after all my prior moves with competitors, I know why they under quote. A team of 2 would have never ended on time and I would have paid for the overages. My experience was so professional and well done, all furniture intact, nothing broken or missing. Somehow this antique table made it unscathed through multiple moves all over the city, yet one trip with this company destroyed it. The movers said the hit a bump and it broke. They offered to cover it with their insurance, which covers damaged items at $.30 a pound. The fact that they neglected to cover and secure my table properly clearly indicates fault for my loss. I will never recommend them to anyone, and their callous behavior and excuses are signs of a poor work and service ethic. read more

I have used Jay Movers for two of my moves, both between neighborhoods in Chicago. My first move was in 2017, and went so smoothly and quickly. I was injured at the time, and this was my first time using professional movers. My nerves were high, but I didn't need to lift a finger or really say much to direct the guys, which was perfect. I just moved again and was able to call and book Jay Movers without any scheduling conflicts with a little more than month's notice. For this second move, it was a farther distance and BK Lewis gave me two estimations of costs dependent on the time, both were very reasonable. I couldn't move into my new place until 1p.m. for this move, so I needed to request for an afternoon time to move. Unfortunately this was a window from 11-5. The wide window made me nervous, but BK insured me that it's usually more like 12-3, and the movers would call when they were on their way. Luckily, I got a call at 11 saying they were on their way. Armando, Ricardo, and Marcelli were there 30 minutes later. My one bedroom apartment was in the truck in less than an hour. The commute to the new location took a while because of traffic on Lake Shore Drive and Lollapalooza, but once they got here, they were moving fast! One hurdle the guys handled beautifully -- which just goes to show how much they deal with and problem-solve every day -- was my wide couch and my narrow stairwell/doorway. The guys had to disassemble my window to get it in my place, but they did it without any damages. For the total time, it fell in between to the two time estimations, which I was anticipating. I've been so happy both times I've hired Jay Movers, and I will continue to use them for future moves-as well as recommend them to everyone! They arrive promptly at 8:00AM, and had everything in the storage unit by 9:30AM. I was accidentally overcharged for my move, so I called to address the issue and the manager, BK, addressed it promptly and I was refunded within the hour with the absolute best customer service. I used Jay's Movers exactly one year ago to move across the city. They were reasonably priced and completed the move quickly. However, they had a new member on the team and dropped a dresser through the drywall on our stairs and scraped up several other corners throughout the move. They came a repaired this within two weeks, but still a pain. My biggest complaint is that all of the furniture they took apart and put together again (two dressers and a bed) have fallen apart due to their shoddy workmanship putting them back together. These were IKEA pieces of furniture, but by putting the screws in the wrong holes, not using all screws or flat out doing a bad job they have broken within the past year and they were in good shape before. read more

The movers showed up three hours after our appointment window, gave us only a portion of the time window we booked, and refused to refund us back the lost time or pay us back for late fees incurred when returning our truck because the movers showed up three hours late. I'll keep this short and sweet - the company is not trustworthy and the service was average. The owner said he was going to contact me in order to resolve the issue, but lied about that as well. Less than professional! Though the landlord requested that the movers use the back door (as per tenant lease), this group used the front door. When asked in-person, this group of movers tried to push their way past the landlord standing in the doorway. Only after the landlord had a loud discussion with the family moving out, did the moving company start using the back door. Then the foul language being used by the moving company, in front of a 7 year old, was unacceptable. After telling the crew to refrain from foul language, things only got worse. They crew foreman began yelling and screaming down the street while on his phone. All the while his workers went up and down the stairs loudly cursing at the landlord. When asked to again refrain from using such vulgar language or the police would be called, the workers began yelling "You think we afraid of the police?!" "Call the fucking police!" I know this company may not agree with my review, but professional movers look and sound just that....PROFESSIONAL! Oh I didn't mention the damages to the front wooden door and frame as they company wedged a quarter into the door to keep it open. Waiting for my estimate to repair that damage. Warning! Long review ahead! Not the best experience, but not the worst either I guess. The guy at the front office seemed very friendly and knowledgeable and gave us a fair quote for a move that he assured would take between 2.5 - 4 hours. He informed us that we could pay a small deposit and cover the rest in cash the day of, or we could pay the full amount and he'd refund us any time we paid for that wasn't used. We opted to do that, since we don't ever have cash. He gave us a time window and said the movers would call to give us a better idea of when they'd arrive the day of. Not the best: The day of, we hadn't heard anything from them saying that they were on their way, so we ran out to bring our refrigerated food to our new place, 5 minutes away. Right as we're pulling up to the new place, they call and say not that they're on their way, but that they've arrived. So we apologize, saying since we hadn't been called yet, we thought we had at least 20 minutes. They said it was fine, and we hurried back to let them in. Not the best: We had everything packed up and ready to go, but they decided that we needed to rent wardrobe boxes from them to house any item we packed in anything other than a box. They ended up charging us an extra $100 for materials that we didn't want (or need) to rent. Not the worst: The guys took excellent care of our stuff. They meticulously wrapped each piece of furniture more securely than I would have even done, and every single piece was delivered to our new place without any damage. Not the worst: The guys truly seemed to be experts at what they do. They worked very well together as a team, carried way more at a time that I would have thought possible, and seemed to know exactly how to maneuver each piece of furniture to avoid damage to it or the apartment. Not the best: We were moving to a place 5 minutes away, left for that destination at the same time as the movers, and they arrived about 25 minutes after us. We began to wonder if we were paying them to go take a lunch break or something (we wouldn't have cared if they wanted to take a break to eat or get water or something, but we certainly wouldn't have wanted that time added to our total on our bill). When they finally arrived at our new place, we were told that the reason it took so long was that their truck was too big to fit under the Metra and El bridges, so they had to take an alternative route. If this was truly the issue, I can't understand why it isn't someone's job to check the truck's route to see if they're going to come across bridges like this so that they can plan around them. The truck they brought was massive, so this really should be something that is taken care of in the office before the movers ever head our way. Not the best: The total move ended up taking 6 hours and 45 minutes. Though it was only 2 bedrooms and living spaces worth of stuff, we are on the 2nd floor of both places (and the stairs at the first place are treacherous) so we totally understand why it took extra time. The problem we really had was that over the phone, we were told that it would take between 2.5 - 4 hours, but most likely on the shorter end so that we'd be getting a refund for our deposit, and it ended up being significantly longer, despite having all the information about what floor we were on and what furniture we had. The head mover told us that having both apartments on the 2nd floor meant there was no way that time frame would have ever been enough, so they shouldn't have given us that estimate. The guy working the front office needs to get way better at estimating the duration of moves. Not the best (possibly the worst): When they went over time by that much (and used their own materials, which we didn't want them to do, but they charged us for anyway) they then expected us to somehow have $450 on us in cash. Obviously, we didn't have this, because we were told over the phone that with the amount we paid up front, there would be no need to have cash on hand. They then called the owner, presumably Jay, and had him speak to me. He was quite rude and just kept saying "Cash only, cash only on Sunday, cash only." We offered Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, and asked if they could just run the charge on a credit card the next day. I explained that the nearest ATM I could go to for my bank was 20 minutes away, 40+ roundtrip, and Jay was fine with essentially holding his workers hostage in our home for 40+ minutes just so he could receive our payment cash. Truthfully I don't know why, but he suddenly accepted me paying with a credit card and had the head mover take down my card info. Which, of course, means they could have done it this way the entire time. Overall, the customer service end was pretty crappy. The men were expert movers and didn't damage our furniture in the slightest, but the customer service was just so truly terrible that if not for how skilled the men were, I'd truly be giving this a 1 star rating. read more

They weren't that bad, but I had a couple issues with them. They quoted me the minimum $294 for 2.5 hours but my total bill ended up $445 for 3 hours. Here's how: 1. Playing the numbers game. They rounded their start time down 15 minutes to 12:30 and their finish time up 15 minutes to 3:30 and drove by my apt twice before pulling in, killing another 15 minutes. 2. Only 2 out of the "3 person crew" actually worked. One guy (Ronnie) probably only made a total of 3 trips. He spent the entire time mummifying furnture and appliances in clear tape (More about this later). If I hadn't been making trips too, I'm sure it would have added even more time to my bill. 3. No ride included Unlike other reviewers, they did not offer me to ride with them. This added a $20 cab ride. So that's how they squeezed extra moolah out of me. That earned them a 2-star rating. Here's how they brought it down to 1-star: 1. High pressure to tip Lots of sob stories about "This is how we eat - we dont' have a choice - I have three kids at home so I need the money - we will work hard but we expect you to hook us up at the end boss" I tipped them $45 and got no thank you. And honestly they were anything but fast. 2. Packing tape mummification I had the choice of $40 shrink wrap or using blankets with tape. I chose blankets with tape. However, on most of my stuff, they didn't use the blankets at all - they stuck tape directly to my hardwood desk, stainless steel microwave, all of my dresser drawers, and other large appliances. I spent the next 2 days with a bottle of Goo Gone, hoping the finish wouldn't come off of my wood desk and dresser. 3. They forgot an entire closet Maybe it was my responsibility to re-check what they had done but they told me they had gotten everything. I had to take a 2nd $20 cab ride to take a closet full of suitcases, coats, and books to my new place. Come on guys, YOU're the professional movers, not me! lol So. $294 plus 45 minutes of dicking around ($60) plus tip ($45) plus cab ride to apt ($20) plus cab ride to pickup what they forgot ($20) plus one bottle of Goo Gone ($5) = $445 and some very sticky appliances. When I called Jay's movers they were professional and the quote was clear enough that I felt comfortable using their services. When they arrived at my house one of the movers introduced me to a guy that he called his "helper" and he insisted that I pay him hourly or provide this additional man with a tip. After an extensive unnecessary conversation I politely declined several times. I had three movers and I didn't see a need for a forth guy in a one bedroom apartment! The man did help occasionally carrying one or two items. It was hard for me to miss the fact that the gentleman did not speak English and seemed desperate for any money that they could get. I'm almost certain that he was an illegal immigrant. They worked very hard to move the furniture to the truck down two flights of stairs, through a backyard and a garage they managed to move my apartment into the truck in an hour. So, I'm still trying to figure out why it took them two and a half hours to move my furniture into my apartment after we arrived when they had a reserved elevator? When I was watching them they worked extremely hard, but when I was at my new apartment sitting in the apartment waiting for them to make trips upstairs they were extremely slow sometimes making a trip in the elevator with just a fan in their hand! After paying more in hourly fees as a result of their relaxed attitude, I was given the high pressure tip routine! All four guys were standing staring at me as the leader of the group once again begged me to pay their "helper" the illegal immigrant. Overall, this is a company that I will avoid in the future. I do not like to be pressured to pay extra for something that I'm not getting. The illegal immigrant hardly lifted a finger. These gentlemen will work extremely hard when you are watching, but please do not turn your head! I feel duped! I didn't want to leave the door of my new apartment unlocked with some of my items in there while watching them unload the truck. Nothing was broken and I learned a valuable lesson! read more

3.5 is what I'm truly giving. I needed movers within the week, but was moving on a weekday and I felt there wouldn't be much issue in booking some. I haven't hired movers since around 2007, so I was out of the loop on the current practices. I came on Yelp to find a place, and decided on calling Jay Movers. When I called to get a quote, I spoke with a nice guy that answered all my questions. I'm a veteran mover and was able to give a really good estimate of what all I had. I was told that any extra materials, like cling wrap and tape, would be extra. Ok, I feel I'm good in this area cause I have cling wrap. I'm given what I believe to be a good quote, check some things and then book. I like how I received an email to confirm my move and a call the day before to re-confirm with us the time the movers would arrive. All good as far as this goes. I was quite pleased. Then moving day came. The movers came on time, which again was great. However, the foreman guy came in right away with a very strong sales pitch. I do mean right away. I've worked in sales and I know when someone is coming on too strong; he was. He started with telling us how beautiful of a job he would do and that he hopes we'll give them a nice tip at the end. I. Hated. This. Did you really just pander? After the The Tip Sales Pitch, he gets started on how he wants to wrap different items in cling wrap and tape. Talking about $30 for it. Now, in the years I've moved before, movers would simply wrap stuff up in blankets. This whole cocooning things in cling wrap is absolutely new to me. This reminded me of when I was told about extra fees for materials. So, this is what that's about. I was then worried that they were so used to moving stuff this way, that if I didn't opt to have the stuff wrapped, it would possibly be damaged. We settled on $20, but I wasn't happy about it. Next the move. The quickest way to move out of the place I was leaving was the door at the end of the hall (just mere steps from my door) that led to the staircase that led to the back of the building where the truck was. That's how I mostly moved in. The foreman was dead set on using the elevator, which meant going through 3 doors, across the garage, and a narrow passage, to get to that same back door. Dead set. I didn't like that either. I knew how hard it was to get the couches through that door when moving in. I felt doing it this way would eat up too much time. A combination would be fine, but not just solely relying on the elevator. The move started at 1pm, estimate of 4 hrs which I thought was doable with maybe a half hour over. They got to the new place at around 4pm. I got a pit in my stomach as I worried about how long they would take here. New place had a freight elevator, which I'm sure the foreman was happy about. They were able to back right up to the door to where the elevator was. I had beverages ready for them so they could stay hydrated. I will say that they definitely moved quickly, but it took two hours at the new place which took it an hour over the quote. I feel like it would have most likely taken even longer if I hadn't helped. Things wrap up at 6pm, I start working out the payment with the foreman. I tell him I can do a $15 tip per person (3 guys), he tells me people usually give $20. At this point, I had to really maintain my composure. REALLY. When he starts to tell the guys in Spanish that I'm only giving $15 and he tried to get them $20 in front of me, I almost lost it. I didn't lose it because the two guys shrugged their shoulders and were like whatever they were happy with what they were getting. Those two (Carlos and Fredi), were so cool. I liked them period throughout the whole thing. The foreman, I wanted to tell him off so bad. How rude is it to tell someone who just spent damn near $600 on a move, but is still giving a $45 tip that her tip really isn't good enough???? I don't give a rat's ass what other people usually give, I give what my pockets can afford and what I feel is appropriate. OR I could just pay for the move and not give a damn tip at all!! I wanted to tell him to give $10 of his tip to them then if he's so offended by me offering $5 less PER PERSON than what other people do. I honestly feel like being against using the stairs at the first place led to the moving go an hour longer. I didn't want to move a thing, but had I not, who knows how much it would have cost me. I also feel if you do good work, and people feel it's good work, they'll reward you without you having to say a thing. Also, the cost of the move was a necessity. The gratuity is not. This isn't me leisurely dining out. No one determines for me what I can give as part of my disposable income but me. For these reasons, I wouldn't use Jay Movers again: Strong arming me in the beginning, having an issue with using the stairs, and throwing up his nose at my gratuity later when I helped and the move went an hour over. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I wouldn't waste 5 minutes of your life reading further. I am a project manager I have used Jay mover for multiple jobs. I have referred probably 15-20 contractors and friends to them over the last couple years. This last time I used them for a personal job, to move my things to a new apartment. They showed up at my place with 4 guys. They told me that I needed to tip them before the job started. I deal with various contractors EVERY DAY and this is complete B.S. and poor business practice. I promised the guy that I would tip hip at the end. He then stated that he brought his "friend" along and if I didn't tip him, he'd charge me a couple hours extra which would amount to hundreds of extra fees. They smashed our mirrors, broke window frames, and REFUSED TO REIMBURSE us for any of the damage. I pay movers $600 so that I can have a stress free day and see my things moved to a new location. This guys complained the entire day, and reminded me every 30 minutes that he would need extra tips. At the end of the day we gave a $150 cash tip and a bottle of bourbon and he had the nerve to complain. After calling and emailing Jay movers numerous times we were promised a refund. Never happened. I called and emailed again, and I think I finally got a useless refund of around $50. 15 referrals x $400 = $6000. Thats how much money I've single handedly brought their company (not to mention the future referrals they will lose) Someone over at their office isn't too business savvy only giving me a $50 refund! I scheduled two seperate moves on two different days with Jay's--one move for most of my property to a storage unit and a second move to a high rise apartment downtown. The first move went very well. The move took the estimated time and there were no problems. They crew used a dolly and ropes to carry multiple boxes on each trip. They used a ramp up to the back of the truck. They were very efficient. Unforunately, the second move was not pleasant. The movers arrived with a small truck. They did not use a dolly or ropes. They did not have a ramp up to the back of the truck. The aforesaid caused the move to go very slowly. While there was way more stuff to be moved on the first visit, the second move took more than 2 hours longer. While I told the staff that I only had the freight elevator at the high rise apartment from noon to 2 p.m., by 11:30, they had still not moved any large items into the truck, yet they started the move at 9:15 a.m. We also had 30 mins travel time to account for. Then I was told they could not take the coach, table, or wine frige. What? They complained the truck was too small (even though they saw everything that had to be moved at the start and were told in advance that I had a 2 bedroom apartment). I demanded that the staff take boxes off, or have another truck come over, as the sofa had to be moved. They did end up getting the sofa on the truck, but not the table or wine fridge, which I had to move myself. Apparently, management gave this crew the smallest truck, which is not used for a 2 bedroom move. The movers did not arrive at the high rise apartment until about 1:10 p.m. and I only had the freight elevator until 2 p.m. This of course caused numerous delays and they did not finish until around 3:30 p.m. While I was reluctant to do so, I gave each crew member a $40 tip as they had worked for six hours. Someone from Jay's called me at around 3:15 p.m. asking me why the move was taking so long and I told him the aforesaid. After the movers were finished, and I started to unload our boxes, I noticed the glass inserts for my coffee table were missing. I called Jay's. I was told by the person answering the phone that he would check with the movers and get back to me. He failed to do so. I couple days later, I sent a detailed email to Jay's, via their website, which was ignored. No response at all. I spent over a $1000 for two moves with this company and this is the treatment I get? I now have a useless coffee table as the glass tops are missing sitting in my living room. Looks ridiculous. Thanks Jay's. Needless to say, I will not use them again. read more
