I go there every Saturday morning for bagels. They are always very fresh and they really don't skimp on the cream cheese. Yelpers weren't too far off on this one, and having experienced deli's from the Northeast and Florida, Chicago is not particularly the best with this stuff. Though they still have a decent amount of good food and deli, it's just not good enough for a city in any capacity. They do have a great location and could become a staple for many but start pricing better as well as providing Northeastern flavor. read more

The corned beef sandwich I had here was great, a lot of meat comes on their sandwiches, served traditionally and delicious. But at about $8, it's totally overpriced in my mind (for 2 slices rye bread, corned beef, yellow mustard), so I probably won't be coming back, which is too bad! $10 is a lot for a sandwich so it would be hard to make this an everyday lunch spot. There are quite a few places where a sandwich that expensive is large enough to split between two people and still be full and this isn't one of them. The pastrami sandwich is very delicious though and the service was very friendly. There is a huge selection of teas, sodas, chips and ice cream. Sandwiches come with a pickle and a side. This is not a place like Kaufman's - a Jewish deli wonderland - but it is fast and fresh and the potato salad is awesome. read more

I tried the matzo ball soup today. Really good. Have been disappointed by others in town, but, this is definately the real deal.

The Reuben was really good, just the right proportions of ingredients, that was I was not fan of their chicken soup (spicy in a way almost designed to mask the chicken flavor) and the matzah balls were like cannon balls. One of us was here three years ago and had a tasty pastrami sandwich. We kept talking about coming back. Finally yesterday we stopped in after a friend canceled dinner plans. Walking in to this nice throwback Jewish deli. We ordered three sandwiches pastrami, corned beef and roast beef. We also got a potato pancake. All sandwiches were their made for two people size. We asked for the pastrami warmed. All were delicious on thick sliced marbled rye with mustard. Pastrami was tasty and a lil peppery. Corned beef was nice n fatty. Roast beef was medium rare and tender. Sandwiches were so big we saved some of the meat and will make more sandwiches today. We should have asked for the potato pancake to be warmed but it was still tasty with sour cream and apple sauce. The sandwiches came with nice deli pickles and chips. We talked with Laura (who was warm and inviting) while sandwiches were being made. She gave us samples of their banana bread and lemon squares. Yummy. We also got a loaf of banana bread to go. I can't say we will eat this heavy meal everyday but it was certainly a belly filling meal. Price was a bit steep but considering we will get two meals out of all the meat it's not so bad. read more

One of my favorite delis to go to hands down. Great sandwiches and subs, and the most amazing Veggie cream cheese I have ever had the pleasure of eating! The only sad part is that the times listed on here are different than the times they're open. I'm not sure what their hours of operation are, but you should be solid if you go around noon. I'm not sure if they're open at consistent hours, but their food is to die for! And the people there have always been very kind to me! Would definitely recommend. read more

Do not order delivery from this place. They didn't deliver half of our order and when called about it said they couldn't deliver the missing food because they were closing soon (it was 20 minutes before they closed, and not complicated food to make, because... it's a sandwich shop.). The food that arrived was cold. The spinach pie was frozen and not at all cooked. This is the second time we ordered from them and the second time they got the order wrong. The last time we just asked for a credit for the missing item (we were charged for an entire loaf of banana bread and not a slice of banana bread which is what we had received. If it hadn't been a $10 we probably would've just let it go.) This time we ordered $60 in food. $20 of which wasn't delivered and the rest cold. Unbelievably poor service. read more

Calling JB's an authentic Jewish deli is akin to calling Olive Garden an authentic Italian restaurant. It's a very sub par deli. I just got home with a pound of extra lean corned beef and they cut it with the grain instead of against. It's such a rookie mistake and I'm going back to return it tomorrow. It's awful. Their selection is super limited.... no lox spread... no smoked salmon.... no mandel bread. I live so close to there and so want it to be decent but there's no way around the fact that it's just not. I'm typically not a know it all kind of guy but the people on here that claim it's good obviously just don't know what a good Jewish deli is. Go to Fannies in Lincolnwood, Mannies downtown, Max's in Higland Park, the Bagel in Skokie or Chicago. Those are authentic Jewish deli's. JB's is basically the same as the deli counter at your super market. read more

I've tried over and over again to give this place business, and all I ever get is the worst attitude from the employees who work there. I go back wanting to support a local place, but all I get snarky workers who seem pissed off to help me. The food is sub par at best, and highly over priced. $15 for a sandwich is way too much. The first thing you notice coming to this deli is the filthy floors. Underneath the counter is a mass of grease, ancient cold meats and who knows what else. Then the people working there are not friendly. Being there too long, they don't care anymore. A tall male possibly the manager pretends to be funny but he is rude. All smokers with their cigarettes in their apron go to the back patio and smoke as soon as they have a break...anyone can smell the nicotine a mile away. What is worst I never seen them washing their hands, not only once. This deli also believe that they should sell the old first vs the new. So don't expect to have the fresh croissants...the old ones need to be sold first. Sandwiches are generous but I will be afraid to go to the back counter and see the filthy preparation area. All pastries are covered with old plastic, not very appealing. Not worth your time. read more

Fantastic! The staff there (Jo) was very helpful and courteous, offering much information and recommendations. We were lucky to be there when they could spare the time to do all they did for us. Can't imagine any restaurant being that helpful during dinner or lunch rush. The food was delicious and plentiful, one sandwich is enough for two meals. Matzo ball soup was very tasty, corned beef was to die for, my husband had the My Cardiologist needs a new car sandwich, that was also very delicious. They're making sandwiches, so its kind of hard to mess up the foodm considering there isnt a lot of cooking going on. i find the staff to be very friendly, down to earth people and the food matches those characteristics. The 3 stars is due to overpricing. i ate the same meal everyday for about 2 weeks, but i got it from different delis/diners/cafes throughout the area. The same exact meal, portion size and all. There's was the most expensive, by far.... i mean by a huge gap, we're talking almost 5 dollars. LOL, it tickles me every time i think about it. Nonetheless, i'd still come back. Food was really good and it wasnt my first time coming there. i've eaten here about 5 times now. Hadn't been in a while before my little 2 week experiment. Im giving J.B.'s Deli a five star rating for their location in Andersonville. Its the best deli in the neighborhood, not the best deli in the city of Chicago. And thats OK.........because, ...I love the fact that a Jewish deli and an independently owned pharmacy (very rare in any city) joined forces to keep a business alive. I think they compliment each other very well. J.B.'s Deli makes theee best sandwiches! At first you might think its pricey, but it beats "queasy's" and "subpar" sandwiches hands down. I love their salads....everything is fresh, and they sell HALVA!! Please keep the HALVA!!!!!!!! Consider the neighborhood and give J.B.'s Deli a chance. You will be pleasantly surprised. To the people who complain about a Deli/Rx mix, keep in mind back in the day pharmacy's used to have "soda fountains" in the front of their stores. hands down, best bagels in the city! I am pretty much here all the time. Great people working there who are always smiling and being nice, and you can't beat the location. Nothing better than a good bagel and a stroll down Clark street to start the day! They were also great when we needed to have a brunch for a large group of people. I can't speak for everything at the deli because I only just moved here. I did move here from a very prominently Jewish neighbourhood and no, this is *not* the kind of Jewish deli you'd find in NY or one of the other major Jewish metropolitans, like So. Florida. That said, it's still a Jewish deli (and apparently it really is one of the few around), the selection is fantastic and the food was great. I highly recommend the My Cardiologist Needs A New Car sandwich, provided you don't already have a heart condition. It's amazing! If I could give less than one star for this review, I would. I've been in this establishment many times over the past 10 years. The food is great, but the customer service I experienced today was utterly disgusting. I went in there today to buy a few things, and there were two guys working behind the counter. One of the guys looked at me, and then proceeded to help a customer that came in *after* me. The other guy (who was helping another customer at the time) looked over at me. He smirked, and then proceeded to slow down his work to a snail's pace. It was clear to me that I was not welcome in the establishment. I will NEVER to go into this place again. read more

I went in today for the first time. I ordered the corned beef sandwich. The taste was good, the meat was a little too fatty. In my opinion the size of the sandwich was small, which was disappointing after reading the reviews about huge sandwiches. I would say over priced at 12 dollars and I laughed when I pulled out the 25 cent chip bag out of my Togo bag. The service was alright, it felt like I was getting stared at and talked about when I was in there. I gave them a shot but I won't be back , if you are going to charge that much for a sandwich come up with a way to make it feel more worth it. I would definitely get rid of the quarter bag of chips as a side, the ones displayed in the store (the ones I thought would be in the bag) would work in your favor. read more

I will preface this by saying, I didn't even get to try the food. But after the atrocious customer service, I never will. I placed an order through Seamless, and I got a call from the restaurant saying they wouldn't fill my order because it was 1.80 under their delivery minimum. Got it, fine whatever. I called to upgrade my order, and everything seemed fine. I check with the restaurant, they say we're good to go, even though "it's barely over and we're about to close, but I'll fill it". An hour later, I get another call saying that my order is ready to go, but they got a notification saying the order was cancelled. Again, ok, not their fault. I try to give them a credit card over the phone, that's not acceptable since their driver can't come back to the restaurant. I don't have cash. I try to get Seamless to fix it, and they're told they don't have delivery drivers to send it out, even though 3 minutes before it was going to be delivered. Whatever, my Progresso is probably just as good if they give their food the same amount of care they give potential customers. I won't annoy this place any further by trying to pay them for the service they're supposed to render. read more

I came here a few years ago for a Reuben and did not have any bad memories. So my husband and I came in a couple weeks back on a Sunday afternoon to satisfy our Reuben cravings. It took 5 minutes for at least 2 employees to assemble the sandwiches. Then we were told it would be 8-10 minutes to heat them. Um, ok, guess that's fine. Add 5 minutes to that because the person put the sandwiches NEXT to the grill press, then later I hear another employee say, "Should these go on here?" We settled in for a longer wait. So going on 20 minutes, a guy behind the counter says to us, "Come on, guys, it can't be that bad." Basically the equivalent of telling someone on the street to smile. Maybe consider why your customers, who were all smiles when they walked in, look less than happy now. Finally they're done, and I go to pay. The sandwiches and two bags of chips (we wanted the good kind, not the ruffles) are $32. I stop and ask if that's right. Guy says they are really big sandwiches. They aren't that big. They tasted...ok? Kind of bland. I won't be back because of the poor service, wait, and price. read more

If you are ok with waiting for 3 hours to eat a chicken Caesar salad and ok with horrible customer service, this is the place for you! I ordered 2 sandwiches and a salad from this place on Grub Hub at 1:05pm on a Wednesday. At 2:23pm I receive a call from the restaurant telling me they forgot to include the salad with the order that went out already and asked if I still wanted it or if I want a credit. Because I actually wanted to eat the food I ordered I asked for it to be sent still. 10 minutes later my 2 sandwiches arrive. At 3:35pm my salad still has not arrived and because the place is only 3.6 miles from my house I decided to call to inquire the whereabouts of my salad. The woman told me it was going to be sent soon and hung up on me. Furious, I called back and told her she was rude and unprofessional for hanging up on me and that it was poor costumer service to not communicate to me that they did not plan on sending my salad for over an hour! Still no apology, I decided to hang up on her! This place is a joke and I will make sure everyone knows it!! read more

Here is my philosophy about The Sandwich: unless it's so colossal that I can't properly fit it into my mouth, it's not worth my time. Based on this requirement, JB's gets a solid thumbs up. My pile of roast beef was so massive that the pitiful rye bread could not contain its girth; it cascaded into my nearby pickle and chips in an affectionate sort of way. It wasn't quite the level of a Manny's Mile High, where the bottom slice of bread is completely hidden by meat, but still a solid effort. Unfortunately, JB loses some points for quality. The corned beef was too fatty for my taste, the pastrami too salty, the roast beef too dry. They were all a bit overseasoned, demoting the flavor of the meat itself to a piteous C-list status. But the ingredients were fresh, service was fast, and atmosphere was classic. Certainly a better choice than the Potbelly down the street. I'll come back for the matzo ball soup! read more

I am here for lunch carry out several times per week. This place reminds me of something out of NYC here in Chicago. It is a mix of deli, drug store, pharmacy, and ice cream shop all in a small corner storefront. The bagels, sandwiches, spinach pie, knish, kreplach, and matzo ball soup are all great. I highly recommend if you are a fan of traditional jewish deli fare. read more
