came in with my family , guy brought his dog inside , the manager or owner asked him to wait out side with his dog, his dog was a service dog. wasn't hurting anyone . the dog was just laying down on the ground as he took his order. not sure why people have such a problem with service animals. dog was friendly and adorable. not sure if I'll be back if this is the way people are gonna be treated. been coming here for years. read more

I'm new in town and have been here a few times in the past month. The ice cream quality is good, Umpqua brand, but the service has been mediocre at best. The young ladies working the counter were not particularly welcoming or friendly, and they seemed annoyed that I wanted to sample the ice cream to find a combination that would go well together in my four scoops that I was ordering for friends and I. The girl serving ice cream cut me off at 5 tastes and indicated I could not taste any more flavors and needed to decide- even though I was the only customer at the time and was trying to find complimentary flavors for the multiple scoops. Further insult was her scoop sizes. They were quite small in comparison to other similar establishments and she seemed weirdly concerned about the weight of each scoop. In the time she spent ensuring each scoop was precisely a certain weight, she could have served multiple customers (had there been). I understand that restaurants need to watch the costs, but this is quite a ridiculous practice and/or adherence to policy. Overall, I'd say the establishment is overpriced for the level of service and product offered. If they focus more on providing a more warm and welcoming environment centered on customer service rather than worrying about the weight of ice cream and how many flavors a customer tastes, it may be a more positive experience that encourages customer loyalty and return visits. That being said, customers are equally responsible for not abusing the privilege to taste ice cream before buying. If Jem 100 must limit tastes, it might be worthwhile to politely inform customers that they're allowed to taste X number of flavors before purchasing. read more

Old school ice cream fountains, burgers, and good service.... that's the Jem for ya! It's been in Newberg a long time, great little ice cream shop for a cute little town! I've been bringing my kids here ever since they could say ice cream, and now that they are teens, we still stop in on ocassion! Ice cream flavors vary from time to time, great banana splits, and greasy burgers too! Price is still on the low end, and the service is always great. In the summer months or anytime the bright yellow thing shines outside, there always seems to be a line, but the line moves quickly. No exotic flavors here like in Portland, but good ole' fashion ice cream is hard to come by these days. The place is small, probably the original size from back in the day, an old jukebox in the corner and 50's style diner booths decked out in red and white gives the place it's "old school" feeling. Along the back wall are baseball team photos from the past many years that Jem has sponsored. Definitely gives the "little town feel" in here. I would rather support our local small businesses instead the huge chains. That's why I choose Jem 100 nearly everytime. I can call in my order and swing in there on my way home. The service is always great, and my order has been correct every time except once, and that was a LONG time ago. I strongly suggest this little place for lunch. read more

First time going to Jem 100 walked in with a big group of people they took our order did all the orders in our group except 2 people's waited for like 10-15 minutes while we watch 7 girls doing different things taking other people's order completing everyone's order expect ours we watched our ice creams melt, one girl was counting tips right in front of me, then counting receipts, while every other girl looks at our order and grabs a different item for our order then finally other girl finishes our order, we ordered a Sunday and got it on Monday. By the time we got outside to eat with our group they were done and ready to go. I asked for strawberries on top but got a cherry instead it was really weird and I was confused what was going on the whole time. 2 stars for the 2 flavors of ice cream. read more

Wanted to support local, but wish I would have just gone to Sonic. Chili dog was a sloppy mess, with runny and vinegary chili dumped over an open faced dog. Grilled burger had rubber for cheese and a chewy burger that was like those premade frozen burgers you get at a grocery store. Fries were soggy and boring. Shakes never came, asked for a refund. I've been there 3 times, and I REALLY want to love it. It's been there forever, family run, gives jobs to school/college kids, retro theme attempted, all the stuff you hope for in a local business. But the food to me just seems all very generic of the restaurant supplier frozen variety (especially the flat chicken strips and regular fries). The counter workers are friendly, but each visit has taken forever to receive the order. The ice cream is weighed in front of you which seems very odd to me, as I've never ever seen another place do that to save a penny? Would I go back? This place is a local icon. I'm fairly new in town and thought I'd give it a try. It's an ice cream parlor that also serves sandwiches and burgers. I ordered a basic cheese burger and fries. The fries were great hot and crispy. However the bottom burger bun was stale and hard. I took it back and they put a new bun on the bottom instead of making a new burger. No Customer Service!!! no greeting, no letting us know to sit anywhere. Nothing but teenagers and stoners serving and cooking. Finally adult comes out and she just as gross getting her bare hands on the ice when serving herself. The cooks looked backed while the other servers touch doors, windows, clothes, hair etc while serving our food. No one wears gloves or hats. Few of them breathing over our food while trying to figure it what goes where. The food took forever for only 5 booths occupied and over 6 employees. Many customers orders wrong. Cleanliness: Nasty Windows and hand prints all over the ice cream station, sticky on tables, benches, even where the food was served. Dirty moldy looking floors, baseboard to dirty counter and dispensers. My husband even noticed dead bugs and pills on the floors. Food: Pastrami Sandwich soggy Hawaiian Burger gross with a mountain of lettuce and juice Jem Burger was good but way to much bbq sauce (one star review) Sweet Potatoes Fries burnt Ice cream scoops portions not worth the price especially with how soft and runny it was. Food is alright and prices are decent, but don't visit if you are in a hurry. This is a hometown restaurant, adored by locals, but run by young adults who do not know how to operate efficiently. There are 12 tables and with 6 employees, still took nearly 30 minutes before part of our lunch order was brought out. Corn dogs for kids were hot, though my burger was cold. We were told it would be another 5 minutes before the last of our burgers would be ready. Took 10. Several "to go" orders placed after our dine-in order was placed were brought out before ours. To their credit, the restaurant is fairly clean and staff is friendly. Nonetheless, it will probably be a while before I visit Jem 100 again. read more

Came here a couple of times when visiting my daughter who goes to college at nearby George Fox . Well it gets five stars for nostalgia, four stars for the ice cream . The kids working here are high schoolers mostly, first jobs for most it seems. The kids were polite and eager to serve. I chalk it up to the experience. Can't say much about the food, as I haven't ordered but ice cream and shakes. Kinda feels like the malt shops in fifties and early sixties movies. Seems fine for a quick stop. read more

I have been going to Jem 100 for over 20 years. Over the last couple years though it has really gone downhill. Service is painfully slow, they mess up orders often, customer service is poor and sanitary procedures seem nonexistent. Last week called in order, came to pick up it up when they said to. The food wasn't ready for another 20 min. Opened the bag, everything was stone cold. Came back in, showed them it was cold. They plopped the fries back in grease and put my Hamburger in the microwave for 60 sec then gave it back to me. Um no... I can nuke a burger at home. I will not be returning. They also were prepping all the food in the back with no gloves or hair nets or anything and have heard people complaining of hairs and such in their food. I won't stick around to find that in my food. read more

First off I had a horrible experience at this place, I called ahead of time to see if they had cotton candy ice cream, the girl I spoke to on the phone told me they absolutely had it. I get there and asked for cotton candy ice cream and she told me they were out. She was completely rude, and it was really irritating that I called to make sure they had it before I drove all the way across town & they didn't.. I am not happy with their service. Jem 100 Ice Cream Saloon has been a Newberg hamburger joint for 30 years, with the current owner Tom keeping up tradition for 20 of those years. It's like a movie script, Tom took over right after high school, this makes me think he went to school in Newberg and Jem was a favorite burger hangout. No matter how the story goes he is doing a great job. Our first time in was a jolt from the past, Jem looks like it stepped right out from the mid 60's right down to Brenda Lee's - Sweet Nothings on the 45 rpm juke box for a quarter. We ordered a Double Burger trimmed out nicely plus a Bacon Burger (w/Swiss cheese) run through the garden. The burgers were on sesame buns that had been placed on the flattop, nice, very nice. Both were good quality beef but I don't think the beef was ground there, I'll ask. At any rate both burgers looked and tasted great! So good the minute they hit the table we chowed down and forgot the picture thing, ok we'll return to get those shots later, that'll work! A side of onion rings and Tater tots made the lunch complete, again they didn't look homemade but both were perfectly made and fried to a "T" and of course tasted great. For drinks I had a Root Beer float and my cohort had Malt, well made and just like in my soda jerking days. Lastly a scoop of well made licorice ice cream left us wanting more, in fact ice cream is one of Jems fortes, tons of flavors with all sorts of fix'ens and homemade sugar cones. The staff was young and super friendly, very small town America, a great touch. Even Tom came out from the grill area to say hello, again not only a nice but a personal touch lost today in the drive up and go burger world. Jem is in the middle of Old Town Newberg on the corner of 99 and 240 heading out to wine country. In fact one should make Jem a must stop before wine tasting, not only good but a nice tummy full of food helps the head when tasting. Jem, old fashion? Maybe. A family place? Yes, Good food? It was pretty bland, the ice cream is over priced considering they serve Umpqua brand ice cream (pretty cheap). Seriously go to any corner store and pick some up for half the price. I figured okay whatever I'll give it a second try and have a burger, surely this will be the redeeming quality.. nope. It tasted like a cheap freezer burnt burger. I then realized that nothing on the menu is made in house, its just heated there after it comes off a Sysco truck. I'm sorry I wanted this to be my burger place down the street but no.
