I discovered Jen's Bakery over the weekend, and I'm so glad I did! I was waiting for my pup to get his vaccines at the mobile vet clinic nearby and decided to walk around when I stumbled across this hidden gem. I learned they're only open on weekends, which makes it feel even more special. I had to try both the savory and sweet pastries, and everything was delicious! My favorite was the sweet bacon croissant--it had the perfect balance of sweet and savory with a wonderfully crisp, flaky texture. I also loved the almond poppy seed cake. It reminded me of Whole Foods' Chantilly cake with its light, delicate flavor and moist texture. You can really tell everything is made with care. I'll definitely be back to try even more pastries. Instagram can do wonders in bringing people places they wouldn't have otherwise gone but not every place is worth visiting and this is one of those places for me. A business usually has some redeeming qualities if the food isn't great but Jen's pastries lacked in those areas as well. I drove out on a Saturday an hour before closing and they were out of most things. This was my fault for going late. The guy who helped us wasn't very friendly. He wasn't rude but not nice, maybe he just had a long day. I grabbed a few items anyway because I was there (a chocolate chip cookie and a pastry). It was just okay. Definitely not worth the trip. I really wanted to try the cake so I went back the next day about an hour after opening and they were already sold out of most cake flavors. I expressed disappointment and the lady helping us just said yeah you need to come pretty early since they sell out quickly and all I could think of was how much earlier do I need to be there?! I guess maybe at opening? Luckily they had one flavor left but it was pretty dry and crumbly so it was enough to let me know this place isn't for me. I think a lot of people like this place based on what I see on instagram and how quickly they sell out so try it if you're in the area but don't go out of your way especially in the winter because you'll be ordering and standing outside. read more

The pastries are tasty, but I don't know if they are tasty enough that you literally have to queue up at opening in a parking lot to get anything. I got there at opening time and there was already a huge line and by the time it was my turn, half the items had run out. They have a very large menu so maybe they are making only limited runs of everything. And it doesn't help that they allow single customers to literally purchase up entire stock. There should probably be a per person limit on popular items or something to ensure everyone gets something. Their poptarts are very tasty, but the other stuff didn't wow me that much at least for their price (they are VERY expensive -- 4 items put me over $50) and the general hype this place gets. The cakes were a bit too buttercream heavy for my liking. I might have liked other menu items better but as mentioned price is a limiting factor. Maybe inflation is hitting them hard as it is everyone. The servers were very nice. No complaints there. But the line was very slow. Overall a nice pastry shop but I think the hype is a little overblown. There are many nice pastry shops and coffee shops in town with pastries that are just as good but not as expensive and you don't have to rush to get anything and still have to wait 30-45 minutes. 4 stars due to the pastries being high quality but subtracting one star because of the purchasing experience and cost. read more

What a neat place... sort of an underground pastry movement in Johns Landing. This shop might seem grassroots but apparently there is a major following in the area. I just found out about it and I'm very glad I did Basically, you show up when they are open... currently only on weekends from 9-1. Then, you get the difficult task of picking something from a ridiculous list of amazing options ranging from donuts to scones to croissants to cakes. Choosing only one thing seems impossible. But isn't that true about every great bakery? Be sure to show up early because they do run out of things as the day goes on. I unfortunately was not able to try their donut option when I showed up just before 11 AM. I tried a scone and cookie and both were fantastic. The prices are a bit high for the market. But it's nice to be supporting a local person. Also, there are currently no seating options available so it's just a walk up and buy from the window type of experience. They did recently acquire the space next door and I was informed that they are turning it into a sit down type of café area. I think it will be a better experience overall when that is available. Overall, a fun experience and a great way to support a local shop that is currently in the process of expanding. I went to add an update for Jen's and it said I haven't written a review for them yet!!! What?! No way. That can't be. I know I have emailed with the company a few times, and we have stood in line there many times. The update I wanted to share was; both my wife and I agree this was the best strawberry shortcake we have ever had! Great job Jen's! it has such a good balance of sweet and a little salty. The line took an hour, we got there about 30 min's before opening. Every time we wait... it's slightly annoying but once we get our pastries and get to enjoy them, we always say it was worth it. They are consistently great! A few great items: Earl grey donut (baked) Banana bread They have chocolate banana loaf sometimes, this was amazing! Scones, very good Sometimes have Portuguese tart, great Bolos, Portuguese slightly sweet puck shaped item, great for breakfast Many cake options They have so much more than this, check out their IG. They are building next door a coffee and seating space, which will be great. Currently you can only order outside at the window, and then they bring you the items. So there is just a line outside, and nowhere to sit or stay out of the rain. They do sell out, so keep that in mind. I wish they had a better ordering process, but anyway we can get it, we will support them. One more thing to add, I read up on their website and blog, I was very surprised to find out, she had a really tough period with a partnership that went very sour, it sounded terrible. The flavor combinations and presentation are undeniably creative, and there's clearly a lot of talent here. Unfortunately, the sweets are often too sweet for my taste, and I've found some items to be overly dry, flavorless, and inedible. The bigger issue for me, though, is the combination of wildly overpriced items and the immature, unprofessional social media posts and responses to criticism I've seen over the years. Everyone is free to decide what they're willing to spend, but at these high prices, it's simply no longer worth it to me. What's most disappointing is that this business seems to want to be part of the community, yet the inflammatory responses I've seen have really turned me off. Talent only goes so far when the way a business engages with its customers leaves such a poor impression. I'm sure this review may invite a hostile response, but that only reinforces why I've decided to take my business elsewhere, and why I don't feel this establishment is what I look for in a business within my community. First off, the pastries are really good. Slightly expensive, but good. Given that it is just a window to order there is little to no ambiance. I guess what was hard for me to love is that their menu is so extensive, however they clearly don't make a lot of each of the items. We got there 30 min after they were open and all the cakes and all the specials were already sold out. It's hard driving far, paying a lot for your 3rd or 4th choice item. Ok where do I even start?!?!! My friend recommended this place when I was looking for a wedding cake. I had no idea how or where to go and Jen helped me through every step via email and phone call. I went with pistachio cake, raspberry curd filling, and earl grey buttercream for the guest cake and poppyseed vanilla cake, with passionfruit curd, and mango buttercream for the cutting cake. Oh my GOD. First of all, they were so incredibly beautiful it made me sick to even cut into them, but the flavor. The guest cake was just insane. My dad couldn't stop gushing, he said it was the best cake he's ever had. It was evident by the entire thing being almost gone by the time we left. We got the biggest available option 14" 4 layer for around 100 guests. The best part was, I had no idea what they would look like. I had never even been to the bakery to try anything . We discussed florals and piping and color but beyond that, I left it in their hands and I'm so glad I did. What a wonderful surprise!! A few weeks before the wedding, I went in to actually try some stuff and I ordered, the Thai tea cheesecake, jalapeño cheese croissant (amazing 10/10 my husband was like this is the best croissant I've ever had), and the miso pound cake (so different but so good). I knew that I had made the right choice choosing Jen's after trying some pastries and I was right!! The best part is, none of it is too sweet. I'm visiting Portland and my gracious host got up early on Saturday morning to get on line and wait for Jen's to open. What a delightful surprise when she arrived home with a box of delicious cakes and pastries. I don't generally like cake because it can be too sweet for me and I don't like frosting. But Jen's frosting is one of the best I've ever had -- creamy without being oily and sweet without being overly so. My favorite though was the lemon Earl Grey raspberry knot - it was spectacular. Stopped in on a cold & rainy day just after they opened and almost had the place to ourselves (I think this is probably quite rare). Friendly staff walked us through the menu and we had a really tough time deciding what to get. We ultimately went with a pretty cake, an earl grey cookie, and a maple roll. The cookie was excellent - doughy and flavorful. The roll was good, though my favorite style of cinnamon roll is gooier with more frosting. We are still so full from the first two that we haven't tried the cake yet, but it looks wonderful. I finally went back to Jen's Pastries after having their cake at a wedding two years ago. I lived my dream of getting a whole big box of pastries like an instagram person. (Except when people buy the last of my favorites right in front of me :/ get there when they open for the day for sure! ) If you've never had the opportunity to try this absolute Portland staple, definitely don't skip on the lemon earl grey cookies, they are what allowed me to discover Jen's since they sell them out at the Helvetia Market! This last weekend I also had to grab a cinnamon roll because of how delicious their social media manger made it look being made, and I think I may have found a new favorite pastry! Really tasty bakery that is open on the weekends! Be sure to stop by at opening or check out their instagram to see what they have in store. Or in my case sold out! We came an hour after opening and their savories are definitely sold out pretty quickly so if you have your eyes set come right at opening. They have the sign and the pastries visible as you walk by as they don't have an indoor area. They'll cross out anything already sold out but once you place your order the team inside packs your goodies for you to take to go. There isn't much seating there either so enjoy your goodies in the car. I've tried their bolo buns, bacon rolls, biscuits, and earl grey cookies. All had such different textures and nice flavors without being too sweet. I would probs pass on the bolo next time but my favorite was the bacon roll. This feels crazy but I'm giving 3 stars. 4.5 for food, 1 for service, and honestly rounding down. Food: obviously this place is highly rated for a reason. Their sweet goods were heaven. 5 stars. We got a s'mores pie because the cake we wanted sold out and wow were we not disappointed. Everything sweet was amazing. The savory pastries were less impressive. We got one with egg and one basic ham and cheese croissant. They were both flakey and amazing but honestly low flavor and I ended up adding spicy chili crisp to the egg one and that I think took it to its full potential. Service: terrible. Yes we knew about the line. No we honestly didn't mind. But what I did mind was that the line time isn't just a function of the folks in front of you. Its that the people working there just take forever. I get it, I like my coworkers too but getting closer and realizing they're just chatting, standing there, not doing anything while theres a giant line around the parking lot was a bit much. Like you're only open 4 hours twice a week, would it be so hard to hustle during that time? And it would all be forgivable if they actually provided service or smiled or at least acknowledged the line but the person who took our order was more or less indifferent to us, neutral at best. I don't know where to begin... I almost don't want to post a 5 star review because then even more people will line up before open on the weekends and the shop will run out of some things before you get to the front. In the same breath, I want more people to go -and sell them out- in hopes of maybe more hours? That's being really greedy though. But I'd still hope! Everything that we tasted was absolutely delicious (even the 'didn't pass quality assurance' bonus), but there were definitely some standouts for me. As a self proclaimed lemon dessert connoisseur, that lemon earl grey cookies is the stuff of nightmares, specifically the kind of nightmare where there are no lemon treats *the travesty* The cookie had an amazingly soft interior, without being TOO soft, and just the right about of bite to the exterior to compliment. The lemon flavor was definitely there, without being overwhelming, and if you're a lemon fan, don't pass this by The other two BIG wins for me were both vegan options: the maple shortbread bar and the ginger molasses cookie. For you non-vegans, you'd never know they were. Shortbread (hey Ted Lasso) has always been a favorite of mine, and I also love maple, so this was a match made in heaven. The bar itself wasn't too sweet, so partnered with the sweet maple glaze, it was perfection. I was sad when it was gone, and kicking myself for not getting another. Even though I'm the only one who ate it, so I really shouldn't complain since I got a whole one to myself. But I digress. Where was I? Oh, the star of the show... that's right. I kid you not that the ginger molasses cookie is probably the best I've ever tasted, and I'm a GMC snob. I don't have words other than GET IT YOU WON'T REGRET IT. It was spicy, sweet, chewy, crispy... I could wax poetic 'til the cows come home. But don't eat with milk... that would defeat the veganism. Or do: it's your life. The staff were so sweet, more than willing to answer questions, patient with all the people waiting to get their paws on some goodies, and went above & beyond (from what I saw) when they could. All in all, if I could give 6 stars, I (begrudgingly) would. I highly recommend you take a weekend morning to head over the Jen's. Take it from me: get there earlier than you need to, dress warm (at least if you're going in the next few months... Portland weather), and maybe bring along something to warm you up from the inside (I won't tell if there's a little somethin' somethin' in there for extra warmth). I like to sleep in on the weekends so it means a lot to say that I'll get out of bed early to be in line at Jens at 9am on a Saturday morning. PNW residents love their carbs so don't be surprised if there's a line when you get there. I went on a Sunday around 9am once and they had a sign that said they sold out the day before. Jen's serves deliciousness in a box. Prices are pricey but the quality!! Top tier. If I ever see Jen's pastries at local coffee shops (which I so often do) I pick one up. I recommend arriving before opening if you don't wish to be part of a long que. You order from an individual standing outside and someone else brings you your order. We ordered two scones and two pieces of cake. The jalapeño and cheddar was a scone of a softer texture style. Nice fresh jalapeños but my taste buds were searching for the cheddar. The lemon ginger scone had a complete different texture. More on the short style and quite pleasing. Didn't expect though a heavy hand of frosting smothering the scone. I'm not used to scones with frosting. It was a very dense tangy frosting that my tongue felt what seemed to be powdered sugar. The scone itself with the frosting scraped off was nice. The two cake slices were a sight to behold! Large 4 layer slices quite ample in size. We were disappointed though that they weren't fresh baked slices but seemed to have been refrigerated from the texture of the cake and frosting. Leaving them to room temp didn't change that aspect. The strawberry, lemon, lavender piece was hard to detect lavender at all. The passion, strawberry, rose was a delightful combination of flavors. I paid by tapping a hand held POS the order taker had and wasn't given the choice to add a tip and was surprised when I got the txt for the charge they had added 15% without asking. My bad if they have it posted somewhere but I didn't see any notice. $31.62 for two scones and two slices of cake I feel deserves some thorough pondering about what I got for my purchase and it just doesn't work for my bakery experiences. read more

Advantage of course with going to this location (weekends only) is better variety and when we got up there still had a decent selection to choose some (some items were sold out). This place is Portland's hidden gem. I am a pastry chef, and this place is one of the best around. Jen creates such amazing pastries and it's so worth going. They are only open twice a week at the time, in a pop up location, they write their menu on a piece of paper and bake fresh and then close up for the rest of the week while they sell wholesale to other places. I love that they also have vegan offerings as well. We love to tell people about this place and send them this way. I can't tell you how many times I have been in line waiting to get seated for breakfast, talked about where we are headed next, and then we see them in line at Jen's later! Waited about 30 minutes which I expected, when I got to the front I mentioned that I had been dying to come here but my work schedule never allowed it and after I ordered I debated getting something else. These goodies are dec-a-dent! I feel like I'm in on a not-so-well-kept secret whenever I come by the half-hidden little bakery to fill up on sweet & savory baked goods - and I can never walk away without wanting to try half of the menu. The menu is typically quite extensive, ranging from cake slices to laminated pastries to savory scones to cookies and everything in between. I've tried a wide variety of things, and have enjoyed them all. The cakes are perfectly moist (yeah, I said it) and not too sweet, with flavors that are creative, yet melding perfectly together in harmony. In fact, none of the things I've tried have been too sugary, despite being sweet treats, with a good balance of sweetness and richness. The hot chocolate cruffin is out of this world, as is the salted honey pie, caramelly with a soft, pudding-like texture. The only minor letdown I've had was the apple cider kouign amann - it lacked the sugar necessary for proper caramelization, which is what makes that particular pastry crunchy and delectable. Would love to see a proper kouign amann from them sometime! Some of the more popular ticket items do tend to sell out earlier in the mornings, but I've come later in their opening hours and still had a wide variety of options to choose from. I think they are busier in summer since there's no inside portion of the bakery space/no storefront. So give Jen's a visit in winter and warm up with some delicious bakery treats! read more

I always thought I wasn't the biggest cake person until I first experienced Jen's Pastries. The pastries themselves are all great, but the cakes are what won't leave my mind. The creative and harmonious combinations of flavors and textures they put together each week will never cease to amaze me. I'm so used to avoiding the frosting on cakes because it's overly sweet, but I've never had that issue with Jen's. I love how they have thinner cake layers so the ratio of frosting, filling, and cake is more even. They're always perfectly moist and have such depth of flavor. Worth every penny spent and every minute waiting in line. Every special occasion in my life for the rest of time will include a cake from Jen's as far as I'm concerned. It seems like both the available selection and the freshness of certain pastries is slightly better on Saturday than Sunday, so just keep that in mind. I recommend coming right when they open (or 10 minutes early) to avoid long lines. The woman we spoke to was really nice and gave us some tips since it was our first time. It's fun seeing the bakers inside working while you're ordering with the menu on the outside a simple decor. We got the maple bar, vanilla bean pie, lemon earl grey cookie, Oreo cake, and jalapeño cheddar scone. In order I would rank: 1. Vanilla bean pie: the crust was a little bit tough but the filling and frosting ball on top was amazing. The custard gave a condensed milk sensation that just lingered on the tongue and roof of the mouth. 2. The lemon earl grey cookie was delicious. It had some bits of floral toppings on top which I thought would be overpowering as I also don't really like floral tastes but it was mild and added a bit of texture. The earl grey flavor comes through really nicely with a hint of lemon. The cookie itself held together well too. 3. The maple bar was different than what I was use to but I did appreciate the lasting flavor of the bar even though it wasn't too sweet. For a vegan bar, was pleasantly surprised and also the square cut was very satisfying in my opinion. 4. The pop tart was good but was so stacked at first. After I learned to compress it to get the frosting and filling all together it was pretty good. 5. The Oreo cake was good but didn't stand out too much for me. Wished the cake was a bit more moist and maybe some more creme to balance out the semi-sweet chocolate cake. 6. Cheddar jalapeño scone was good but needed more of both flavors. Overall a great visit and definitely wanna come back to try some of the other items. read more

Unbelievable delicious pastries.... I never leave reviews but after getting this spot a few times they truely deserve 6 stars. Unique flavor, not too sweet or buttery. You can tell these pasties were perfected to a science. The flavor and consistency is UNREAL. The staff is always friendly and cheerful as well. read more

This was such a fun adventure. Majorly out of the way for me but in such a cute area that I'd love to come back for a special occasion. So many options something for everyone and lots of unexpected flavors. Definitely a chnace to try a new flavor combo. Someone in line was gassing up the cruffins so I tried and was so good! The orange vanilla honey cuffin was perfection. Im a chocolate dessert person so didn't think I'd love it but so great not a sharp orange and the cream inside wow! Great little pastry shop, but you have to order outside as I thought you could go in as I had never been there before... lol. The service is very kind and they're very helpful and tell you everything about every pastry they make fresh there and you can see the making there right in front of you behind the window. Which is great because then you know it's fresh obviously and local. There's so much to choose from at the window, especially looking at the menu. You don't know what you want so it's best that you take a few things unless you're there for one, but I had to grab four when I only came for one originally. The person that was helping me inform me about a lot of the food there so I can make a decision easier even though it was kind of difficult because I wanted it all. For savory, the egg pesto was a great choice, but everything is good. read more

Ordered a cake from Jen's pastries for a celebration and was not disappointed in the least! The online form was easy to use and I got word back quickly with recommendations about size as well as the price. It was suuuper easy to pay online and then woosh, time to pick up the cake! We went with one of their popular cakes listed on their site -- poppyseed with passionfruit curd and mango buttercream. What an absolute delight; the cake was delicious without being too heavy or too sweet and the passionfruit and mango were both amazing. Aesthetically it was a BEAUTIFUL cake as well. Would absolutely get more cakes from this place in the future with a good bit of planning ahead for this already happening in my head. My husband also could not resist himself wen he went to get the cake so he also grabbed a maple oat scone, caramel maple croissant, and a poppyseed muffin and these were also INCREDIBLE. The croissant was lifechanging imo and I would eat it again in a heartbeat. Honestly, this spot is an absolute gem and the people are so kind. Could not recommend Jen's pastries enough! read more
