The jerk chicken was decent but the stewed chicken didn't have much flavor. The mac n cheese was cheesy enough but again the flavor was nothing to rave about. The chicken has the most scrummy smoky flavor. I really loved the chicken and you get quite a lot. I was surprised that it didn't have any spice. I'm used to jerk chicken being a tad on the spicy side but this was not. That's ok though, it was still excellent. I also ordered the yams. They weren't as sweet as I'm used to. The chicken was good and there wasn't a long wait BUT........extremely overpriced. Normally a jerk meal comes with chicken, rice and beans with gravy, two sides and bread. My meal only came with chicken and one side, NO bread and NO rice and beans. I ordered rice and beans as a side. The gravy on the rice and beans was jerk sauce, not gravy. Plus I had to pay $4 extra just to get all white meat. Not sure if I'll be returning because $14 for chicken and rice is too expensive. read more

The Jerk Chicken Wrap was very good. The mango sauce spice was just right. This was my first time there and I wasn't sure what to try. I told the young lady that I had a 30 minute drive and I wanted something that I didn't need to heat up when I got home. She suggested the wrap. When I got home it was still warm and just right. I had to put my fries in the air fryer for about four minutes, but I do this with anything that I order out. It was clean and the staff was very pleasant and helpful. THE PLACE TO GO WHEN YOU ARE WAITING FOR A PATIENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS HOSPITAL! I will never forget the time I spent at Jerky Jerk while waiting for a family member to get out of surgery. This is a community institution where people come to hang out and have fun together. Everyone who works there is passionate about it and loves to be there. I have worked in food service (an industry known for its bad working conditions) and never seen an environment like Jerky Jerk. From the moment I got there everyone was so nice to me, helping me figure out a complicated order (an actually flavorful vegetarian pasta for me to eat right away, and a proper but allergen-free Jamaican takeout to comfort my Caribbean patient) which was made by a truly committed chef who takes pride in perfecting both traditional and fusion dishes. But "great customer service" would be a shallow, disrespectful description of what takes place at Jerky Jerk because in practice, this cafe is more than a money-making enterprise. The owners and other workers are a close-knit group of lifelong friends for whom the restaurant is a space where they can offer friendship, belonging, true hospitality, and Caribbean culture to community members and even strangers. They welcomed me, an out-of-towner from a different background, into this space and took an interest in the wellbeing of my family member whose discharge from the hospital was delayed by many hours. They even welcomed me to stay in the restaurant with them after closing when I had nowhere else to wait (because of Covid policies, I couldn't wait at the hospital). What could have been a horrible night in the Chicago winter was rescued by the warmth and generosity of truly good, kind people, who continued to check up on me after I left to make sure I got back safely and everything was okay with my family. I was so grateful I wrote them a long thank-you note on paper. When it was time for me to do my pickup at the hospital, I felt like I was leaving old friends after all the fascinating conversations and genuine human interactions that had helped distract me from hours of uncertainty. While I do not normally write reviews, I hope that this humble expression will let people know that Jerky Jerk is more than a business, it's a happy place to spend your time, and you might be sad when it comes time to leave. Jerky Jerk folks, if you're reading this, I may never understand the magic of how you are able to pull off what you do- but I will never forget your generosity and friendship on that snowy night in Illinois. My first visit to this establishment was disappointing as far as food presentation and taste. It was simply inauthentic. The rice and beans were bland as traditionally coconut milk would have been part of the recipe. Service was tolerable and the wait time fairly quick. Environment was hygienic and comparable to some other "quick eats" places.
