You would go broke selling cheesesteaks like that in Philadelphia, but it was kinda sorta half decent. Maybe. The cheeseburger was the worst ever. I told my girlfriend the onion slice was the best part of it. The patty was small and tasteless. Was it microwaved? Seemed like it. Bun was lousy and not toasted. Lettuce and tomato - trash. The cheese was okay. McDonald's, Wendy's, and Burger King aren't any good, but this burger wasn't even close to those low standards. The Jigger Shop has existed in Mt Gretna for probably 100 years at this point. My grandpa, who was born in 1911 came here, my mom, now 88 came here, and I brought my boys here. It is named for its large sundae concoction that contains a jigger of this and a jigger of that. It is french vanilla icecream, butterscotch or chocolate syrup, creamy marshmallow and malt. It is sickeningly sweet! My grandpa always got their peach icecream. My mom likes the sandblast. But for me, I gotta get the butterscotch jigger! They have an extensive icecream and sundae menu. In a separate line you can order food including hotdogs, fries and other summer fare. The jigger shop now has expanded with a large outdoor patio and a covered patio section, tables under the canopy of trees and decent indoor seating as well. We were there when the rain was just holding off, so we sat outside in the covered patio area. Up there on the mountain it tends to be cooler much of the time. Mt Gretna has been a summer cottage vacation spot for many decades with a lake and beach area, mini golf, roller skating and the playhouse with all sorts of performances. My mom remembered seeing Charlton Heston sitting on one of the cottage porches back in the 1940s. So in reality, the Jigger Shop is a multi generation family tradition and for that reason alone it is always a special treat to come here. And the consistency of icecream offerings means I can enjoy an old fashioned sundae that my great grandparents once enjoyed, made just the same way. The experience is really cool but the prices, food and ice cream are expensive and mediocre. The baked Alaska was very disappointing and not made correctly. The "beignets" were not beignets. More like funnel cake donuts. 5 onion rings for $9 and no sauce or taste. $12 for a spicy chicken smaller than what you would get at Wendy's. $5 for a diet coke. None of it was particularly good. We went mid-afternoon on Mother's Day and thankfully, it wasn't too crowded. It was also more organized because they had specific lines for ice cream and hot food. It's still the cute shaded space that hasn't changed much in years, but I love it. This was my first visit this season and I don't remember the pricing being as high as it currently is. Sundaes were over $10. My SIL got a peanut butter milkshake that was over $8. Because it was Mother's Day I chose the S'mores sundae complete with a fire. So cute, but for $24 I won't order it again. Yes, you get to keep the mug, but it isn't worth $24. I still love this place even with the high prices. Went here since the mid 60"s, as a teenager, father and grandfather, until 2 years ago when the prices skyrocketed and portions & service plummeted. The final straw was the owner forcing the ice cream gals to WEIGH each ice cream dish and sundae (check ALL of their website & online reviews, many folks are pissed to see the weighing of ice cream). It's bad enough that they still use cheap Jack & Jill ice cream but weighing each serving?! I have never seen anything so petty in food service, especially in front of the paying customers! There are other choices. Try Patches, a couple miles towards Lebanon for super great ice cream, right on their farm or Colebrook Crossings, a couple miles towards E-Town, for good food & cold treats and they are reasonably priced! read more

The Jigger Shop is not a Mt. Greta hidden gem-- it's a well-known destination in the area. Offering a food menu, hand dipped ice cream, soft serve, and other treats like beignets, there is something for everyone. Mt. Gretna is a summer resort/vacation town, so prices are a little steep (especially when it comes to specialty sundaes) but portions are large and definitely sharable. Avoid peak times, like super hot days and afternoons and evenings, when the shop is absolutely filled to capacity with long lines. Service is still fast, with a lot of workers behind the counter, and there is quite a bit of indoor and outdoor seating. If all of the seating is occupied, there are also benches available nearby. The classic "Jigger" sundae was loaded with homemade marshmallow, toasted nuts, vanilla Icecream, and your choice of butterscotch or chocolate sauce (I went with butterscotch). Overall, the sundae was extremely sweet but a bit overpriced (there is definitely a touristy aspect to the place). The beignets were good, and the service was friendly and speedy. The Jigger Shop. This place was POPPIN' when we walked by so my buddy and I knew we had to give it a try. There was a line wrapped around and almost through the door when we got there, but it went faster than my decision on what to get off the menu. With a bunch of teenagers working their butts off behind the counter, they were servicing the customers like a well oiled, friendly, smiling machine. The shop looks like it was pulled straight of the 1930s - cute, quaint, well lit, welcoming. Tons of seating inside and benches outside to enjoy your dessert on a nice warm day. I saw someone carrying out something on fire, so I attempted to get that. I ordered the flambé apple dessert, which she proceeded to light on fire behind the counter. Her work, nothing short of Picasso-level artistry. I'm t tasted phenomenal. That perfect mix of hot and cold. Such a great shop in the middle of Mt. Gretna. My wife ordered the peanut butter cup special sundae that was over $15 (that ended up having a couple scoops of ice cream and a huge pile of whipped cream) and the kiddies ordered milk shakes at over $8 ea. I then ordered a flambé sundae that was made before the other Items so by the time the rest of the order was filled and I paid, all I was left with was puddle of melted ice cream soup. I'm giving one star for the ambience since that hasn't changed and is nice. Given the ridiculous prices ($15 for a sundae, over $50 for the four of us), the meager serving of ice cream in my wife's sundae, and the fact that I couldn't tell how much ice cream was in my flambé since it was completely melted by the time I paid, I'm going elsewhere with my hard-earned money and will NEVER go back there again. read more

Ahhh the classic standby for ice cream or a quick meal in Mount Gretna. Only one big problem. The food and the ice cream are basically ok and average, but it is the only game in town so it's pretty popular at all times. The problem seems easy to solve with just a little bit of creative effort. In this beautiful natural setting, and among the members of this environmentally, friendly community, it seems absurd that the servers behind the counter each separately handle each order and the payment transaction, there's very little opportunity for efficiency and, they have to change gloves after every order! As a fourth-generation patron of the Jigger Shop it gives me tremendous displeasure to write this review. Since Chuck Allwein left, the quality and service have plummeted while pricing recklessly soars. The current management has the audacity to charge $15 for a sundae. You stand there like a complete idiot as employees WEIGH out your ice cream. I can't recall ever being so insulted by an establishment. I can buy a half gallon of their cheap ice cream for half the price. I ordered an iced cappuccino and watched them charge me $8 to run coffee through a keurig-like machine, then pour it over ice and milk. My $8 went straight in the trash. For years the Jigger Shop would be heaving with patrons day and night, eager to have the opportunity to enjoy fine ice cream and sundaes paired with the nostalgia of Mount Gretna. Visiting over this Memorial Day Weekend the place was quiet. Hopefully the MGMT figures out how they've ruined the Allwein's hard-earned reputation. Until then...I'll be heading straight to Fox Meadows Creamery for amazing food, service, and ice cream. One mans bust is another's opportunity. read more

A place for ice cream, not for food. So I'll just go ahead and get the negative out of the way. The food is overpriced and really bad. The fries are great, but other than that, be warned. This is not a place to go for a good dinner. If the prices were cheaper, the lack of quality might be justified. The food is about the quality of a community college kitchen. That being said, the ice cream and sundaes are fantastic. I've had almost every sundae on the menu, and let me tell you, they are ALL delicious. If you want alterations, the serving girls are attentive and go out of their way to make sure you are happy with your order. They made me a S'mores Milkshake, something they had never made before. So, I went in with high expectations. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I found this place to be a pretty run of the mill ice cream shop with a retro vibe. The whole area of Mt. Gretna feels like a wooded hideaway, which is quite nice. We stopped by on a Friday around 1:30 or so thinking it would be an off time for much traffic. There were still a LOT of people around. Everyone was abiding by mask and social distancing guidelines, so that was nice. There were multiple signs reminding guests of both masks and distancing. Getting through the line to order took probably 10 minutes, which isn't bad, but something to keep in mind if you have kiddos along. My initial plan when I was checking out their website was to go for a CMP (chocolate, marshmallow, peanut) sundae. I used to LOVE them as a kid and haven't had one for years (decades?!). When we got closer to ordering, I saw the CMPs were nearly $8! No thanks. Instead, my husband and I both got regular (two scoop) ice creams in dishes. I got toffee bar crunch and he got mint chocolate chip. Both came with two mini pretzels on top. Our total was $7 something - MUCH more reasonable. We ate outside - there are ample benches and tables in the nearby wooded area. Even for being pretty busy, people were still able to find tables a good distance apart. I am an ice cream fanatic. I love visiting new places and the vibe of the Jigger Shop is pretty darn amazing. I am very fond of the whole vibe of the Mt Gretna/Campmeeting area. The Jigger Shop has so much history in the area (over 100 years!) and lends itself well to the small town feel. I love it's inside/outside set up. The sundaes are serious business. These kids will flambé, make brown butter, or fresh donuts TO ORDER. The item pictured is an off the menu creation. Fresh donut on the bottom topped with mocha-something ice cream, hot fudge and whipped cream. Yum. No issues with doing a custom order. I am reserving 5 stars until I've tried the kitchen side of this joint and can make an overall assessment. The Jigger Shop will definitely become a summer staple for me from here on out! read more

Awesome food and ice cream follow up to the beautiful hiking trails! I got the key lime smoothie, which was phenomenal. It wasn't too icy, which I often find with smoothies. They fresh squeezed the key limes in front of us and tasted delicious. I also got the summer salad with chicken which was fresh and flavorful. My friend got the mango smoothie and said it was also delicious and agreed was the perfect amount of ice. My sister got the chocolate milkshake and said it was smooth, the perfect consistency, and tasted great to dip her fries in. The fries were also amazing, not too greasy or soft, and perfectly salted. My dad got the death by chocolate sundae and said that it filled his chocolate obsession needs. My parents shared the pulled pork cheesesteak with hot sauce and said it was so good they wanted another. It was the perfect combo of meat, cheese, sauce, and was a good mix of flavors bringing everything together. I recommend checking out the jigger shop! read more

The yelp reviews had me wanting to try this place but it was definitely a miss. The sundaes and pictures of food all look much better than they are. We got 2 sundaes, a salad, and a wrap. The food was fine, we got what we expected. The sundaes looked great but were poorly put together with cheap ingredients. The whipped cream was awful and there was way too much of it. The marshmallow scarred us from ever getting a sundae with marshmallow again. It was just gross and way too much. We got a s'mores sundae too. Thought it would be pieces of graham cracker and some chocolate. No... it was a half sheet of graham cracker stuck at the bottom and a full size chocolate bar broke in half. I'm sorry but explain how you eat that? Wish the experience was better. Wouldn't recommend. FYI expect long lines. Ok folks let's talk ice cream. So I was on vacation in Pennsylvania. The family wanted to take me here and so we went. I can't compare this place to what it was before. This was my first time here. I got to say I LOVED IT! It's like walking into the ice cream shop from your childhood that you visited everytime you were camping. It's set by a lake and hiking trails. It's ABSOLUTELY Beautiful. Super relaxing atmosphere. I ordered the chocolate malt shake. It was AWESOME! thick, chocolatey and malty. I have pictures of some of my family's other deserts. My mom and dad took my husband and I to the Jigger Shop one evening when we were visiting them in Lancaster. I grew up going to this little joint: we would have dinner, dessert, play on the playground next door, and walk the neighborhood. Such fond memories! My experience this time was fairly different. I chose The Nutz, vanilla ice cream with various types of nuts, chocolate syrup, with whipped cream and a cherry on top. First of all, the ice cream was french vanilla (which I do not like) and half of the nuts were stale. I did like that some of them were candied, making it a little less noticable. My husband wasn't too pleased with his sundae either and my parents always opt to share due to price and portion. Bottom line: I should of stuck with my usual - A scoop of Mint Chocolate Chip with a pretzel on top. Because of the long-lasting memories and its location, The Jigger Shop will get my business once a year if we are in town over the summer. I first visited this place when I was two years old. This was back in 1986. I believe the last time I visited the place was back in 1996. The place is still there (it's been there since 1895, along with the Mt. Gretna cottages dating back to the Civil War) and is a local favorite, especially during the summer time. Whenever we stayed at our cottage, we would walk there in the early evening along the small paths, as I would hop around on the curbs and bumps in the paths caused by giant, ancient trees. If you ever visit this small, obscure little community, you MUST visit this local favorite. it's quaint (at least it was when I was last there) and a great treat on a summer night. read more
