Got referred to this place by someone at a coffee spot in Eastern market. For what it is - it is excellent. I read a couple of reviews on the way over, so let me explain. If you find yourself asking for almond milk, and to add the poached egg to the avocado toast, this place YOU WILL NOT LIKE. This is an old school diner place, I got 3 eggs and bacon with toast for 8.50. And if that's the type of thing you like, hangover cure style, then this is the place for you. We had 4 people for breakfast with coffee, and it came to 47 dollars and it was fantastic. But it is old school style. Feels like you went back to the 70s but I really liked it. Just don't go there with expectations of Williamsburg or something. Get off your high horse. Enjoy the experience, and enjoy the price. read more

This little diner is located down the street from my mom and stepdad's apartment in DC and has quickly become a favorite breakfast spot for them. So of course, when I visited a few weekends ago, they took me here before I departed Capital Hill. I always love a casual/divey breakfast joint and Jimmy T's did not disappoint in that regard. Coffee is served in random mugs that look like they are straight from the owner's personal collection. I wound up with the "VIP Las Vegas" mug complete with cartoonish animal images and palm trees. Not bad, Jimmy T, not bad. As for the food, I chose the huevos rancheros with poached eggs. They come piled with black beans, salsa (a choice of red or green- I went with red), and cheese, served with a tortilla on the side. Pretty standard huevos rancheros with basic flavors and without any fancy angle. I probably could have done with a few less beans, but all in all the dish was just the fuel I needed to take on the day. It's not a large space, and in fact you just might end up brushing elbows with your neighbor while eating. But this just adds to the down-home casual vibe of the joint. No frills, no fuss. read more

If you're looking for the small town diner experience of Danby, NY or Middlebury, Idaho or Bradford, Vermont, this is the greasy spoon for you. The service is slow but friendly, the place is almost entirely filled with regulars, and they keep the coffee coming. The ambiance is wonderful and as unstuffy as you can get in DC: there's a stack of today's WaPos by the door, people talking to their neighbors, young Hill staff on BlackBerrys & Capitol Police officers clapping each other on the back over eggs. For starters, when you walk into the joint it smells like the bottom side of your grandma's couch cushion that's been saturated in cat urine for years. The place smells terrible, probably due to all of the old dusty shit from the 70s that is "decorating" the "diner." I get that it's supposed to have a hipster vibe and all, but come on, I'm pretty sure hipsters don't appreciate roaches crawling across the counter right before their food comes out. I ordered a BLT with avocado. It sure was a BLT alright - bread, lettuce, tomato. The sandwich had one dinky piece of bacon on each half of the sandwich. Call me crazy, but where I come from, the main part of a BLT is the BACON!! I figured a BLT was a pretty basic demand for a diner style restaurant, but apparently it's as hard for the cooks to make as creme brûlée. To top it all off, the server was super stressed and when we asked for the check he was like "yeah, give me a minute, I'm clearly busy doing x, y, and z." I didn't take it personally. I thought it was more of a shot to the manager to be honest. The place is clearly mismanaged and you've got a bunch of people running around like chickens with their heads, arms, and legs cut off. It is all part of the greasy spoon experience at Jimmy's. Depending on the day, service can be really quick or excruititingly slow. Grab a Post and wait for a table if you have to. You'll be hard pressed to find this kind of food served all day on the Hill, especially at such a good price. The eggs benedict are surprisingly good here. They give you a good hunk of ham and a LOT of sauce so you may want to ask for the hollandaise on the side. TIP: Bring cash. On my last visit here, they did not accept credit cards. read more

I love Jimmy T's Place because it's cozy, casual, and they serve grits! It's a local diner at the corner of East Capitol and 6th. The prices are moderate, and food ranges from straighforward brunch fare - including scrapple! - to fancier omelettes, waffles and frou-frou French toast offerings. Coffee is just diner coffee, so come with low expectations. By far, the WORST thing about Jimmy T's is that you can't get a seat. Hill rats tend to linger in there, so if you step inside and there's not an open table, you could be waiting a while. If you step inside and one or two other couples are waiting ahead of you for a table, don't even bother wasting your time. Overall, though, I really like the place (when I can get a seat). It's a small place and there is a wait when it's busy. Make sure you have have cash because it's cash only! We enjoyed french toast, waffles, eggs, bacon and sausage. 4 meals for $28. They try to cross it out if its unavailable but I ordered two things that were both sold out, just my luck maybe. At 11 am on a Saturday, the wait is 10 minutes or so. You will be in and our in under an hour, especially if you sit at the bar. But first, some rules. Jimmy Ts is CASH ONLY. There is no waiting list; it's first come, first serve. You will have to stand or sit outside and wait for people to leave before going in. DO NOT sit down at a dirty table. You will piss off the wait staff if you do and they may not come over for awhile. Once you know these rules, you're fine. It is not a place for groups of more than 4, and I wouldn't bring kids. As for the food, it's cheap, cheerful diner food. They have a number of egg combos that are very filling. The eggs benedict is very good, and the pumpin pancakes are utterly delicious. If that's a special, get it. Don't look back. The best part about this place is the quick turnover and the prices. You can walk out of there spending 7 dollars on a sizable breakfast. Bob's Burgers! That show is exactly what I think of when I think of this place: a small family-run restaurant that proves why your kids shouldn't work in your restaurant. Avoid this place like the plague. Terrible service, lame food, dirty-dirty-dirty tables and dishes, and altogether unocomfortable. Stretching the analogy out--we were waited on by the oldest daughter who we think was going through her "I hate my family and guess I like boys" phase. When I asked for a fork, she said "you'll have to ask my little brother." No, I won't. When I asked for a spoon for my friend's coffee she said, "No." I think she thought she was funny. (She legitimately did not bring us a spoon.) After I placed my order, she stood behind me staring at the nape of my neck, making us uncomfortable before running off to shout at her brother. I ordered a burger and fries. The people I was with ordered breakfasty-stuff (pancakes, etc.). Luckily I had a fork and spoon with me, because we never received a place setting for each person, no one who had coffee got a spoon. My burger came out about 15 minutes after my friends got their food, and my fries came out 15 minutes after that. How does that make sense? AFTER I was done with my burger, our "waitress" brought over the ketchup and mustard I'd asked for BEFORE I ordered and said, "Happy now?" This isn't blue collar humor. It's bad service. Absolutely loved Jimmy T's. Very small with 3 or 4 booths and 6 tables so expect a wait. The staff was very friendly and down to Earth. I ordered the basic eggs over easy, bacon (best I've ever had), and toast. The waiter filled my coffee 3 times ("I want my coffee filled 6 times." -Steve Buscemi, Resevoir Dogs). The only bad thing about my experience was that another rude customer came in arguing about some non-sense. It was so ridiculous that I will not even take the time to go in to detail about it. I am sure he will be writing a negative review on here some time soon so IGNORE HIS REVIEW. His parents obviously forgot to teach him a thing or two about manners.
