Was once my favorite place to eat in DC. I've been eating here since the mid 90s and always stop here when I'm back. The love for preparing the food is long gone. No more oddball coffee mugs, just paper cups. At least the coffee was good, but despite being offered a refill two times, it never came. Never got my water. And the simple two eggs over easy with wheat toast and bacon was about as sad as a school lunch. The potatoes for $2.50 were a comical five slices. I never minded that the place was run down, but the dust in there is older than my adult children. The food prep was always unexplainably slow, but the inept server just made the experience painful. Keep me in coffee, and everything would have been tolerated. read more

Time to set expectations, do not go if you like the places that charge $20 per egg and they use table clothes. This is the real deal mom and pop small diner breakfast place. Do not show up in a hurry, the awesome waiter- host-buss boy and Covid administrator working the front of the house is by himself and is working his butt off for everyone. Its small, clean and takes Covid serious. It's also full of funky decor and I highly recommend the window seat if you sit inside. They have a nice outdoor seating as well, in total there are not a lot of seats inside and out. It's small place, come early or expect to wait a little bit. Let's talk food, expectations guys... there is one cook and all the food is made fresh. It may not all come out at once. My perfect sunny side up eggs were served hot and runny. The side of corn beef hash was authentic old school like my Granny used to make with pulled corn beef and crispy hash browns, vs the "dog food" like corn beef hash you get in most breakfast joints. The fruit bowl was fantastic, blue berries, strawberries and bananas. They actually give you "good" fruit. ... and the moment you have been waiting for... the coffee. Yes, it was good, very good. For those of you who are wondering why I am calling out the coffee, please read my other write ups on breakfast places. We had a nice cross section of plates; french toast, pancakes, bacon ...even toast. There was a variety of grits as well. The cheesy jalapeño rocked. All was good. The only thing I want to call it is they only take CASH. Please be aware, there are ATMs close by. We had 5 big meals with coffee and juice and spent $20 a person including the tip. Not bad for DC. I love a good diner where the coffee flow is endless and the eggs are cooked mere feet from where I sit. I found a good diner eating at Jimmy T's Place. The menu was simple and cheap, and the food was simply delicious. With prices so affordable, I would strongly recommend ditching any needless diet and ordering all the food Jimmy T's offers. I can testify that I wish I had tried more food from the menu before I left (cough, cough the pumpkin waffles). The staff made everyone feel like a regular and the restaurant itself made the place feel like home. Visiting DC and staying in Capitol Hill area. Not a ton of restaurants in the area, but found this breakfast place nearby on a Saturday morning. Incredibly slow service for very basic breakfast food. Took 45 minutes to get a couple of omelettes and toast. Portions fairly small as well. Surprised to see a line out the door (who will be waiting a while!). read more

This little place is so charming and affordable. The line is out the door. People who are waiting hang out by the door until a table frees up. The room is cozy and I appreciated the retro vibe. The wait staff are super friendly and joke around. The menu is typical diner fare, but extensive. I appreciate that it's also affordable. Jimmy T's is my favorite neighborhood spot to cure a hangover or hang with a friend for breakfast. It's a little cash-only diner on the Hill that serves basic diner food. For less than $10, you can fill yourself up, and they have great pancakes and breakfast sandwiches. They actively refill your coffee too. It's not fancy or worth a trip out of your way, but it's perfect if you live nearby! It's not a huge place. There is a counter, a handful of small booths, and some two top tables. You might have to wait a couple of minutes, but I haven't had trouble finding somewhere to sit. Service at the counter is fastest, but the booths are great for a relaxed morning. The tuna melt is a 5 star tuna melt. Perhaps the platonic ideal of a tuna melt. Gooey as all hell. Really top notch. But the breakfast potatoes are terrible. They're just comically undercooked. Like I don't think I've ever met anyone who likes their potatoes crisped on one side only, and I'm using crisp here liberally. You might as well just microwave them. I don't think I've ever had breakfast potatoes that were that bad. The only explanation for it would be that they literally ran out of gas but I don't think that's what happened? read more

Kind of rude staff that yelled at customers who were standing in the door to "get the f*** out of the way and close the door". Which is kind hard to do when you have a crowd/line leading out the door. Would have been nice if they advertised that they only have tables for parties of 2. Unclean practices when it comes to cleaning and cooking. Watch the waiter just wipe the table down with his hand and no towel/disinfectant. If you're looking for 20-min in and out, fancy, DC uptown food, don't come here. If you're looking for a nice place to drink some coffee, decent coffee and a place to sit for a sec, this is your spot! Friendly service, friendly people, small, hometown diner feel. If their full with a line out the door, your food wait will be 30 minutes. If you come with more than 2 people, your wait time can be anywhere from 5 minutes to 15 minutes. Definitely don't come with more than 4 though, cuz there's no room. This is your old time, neighborhood spot that's been around forever and isn't t changing anytime soon. The food, service and vibe seem like it's been this way for all the 50+ years they've been in operation. Reminds me of my Grandpa's old diner and I'm happy to give them my cash. I want to give Yelp a 4 if you live in DC because there's something refreshing about an all American, no thrills breakfast place just a few blocks away from the US Capitol Building. I'll settle on a three. Jimmy T's Place is a corner breakfast spot on the corner of a neighborhood in a row house. There's one floor with three booths, bar seating, and a few other tables all squeezed into a small space. The staff are all business so don't expect an outgoing introduction or smile to go with your morning coffee. The food is basic American breakfast fare with zero thrills. I ordered the #5- one piece of French Toast, a very small sausage patty, and a half of an egg scrambled. All for $4+. It's cheap and you pay for what you get. If you try to squeeze one too many people around your table, it's a little much. If you're in a group, walk over to Barracks Row and to Ted's Bulletin (if you get get in). That said, Jimmy T's Place is a landmark on Capitol Hill and in a city where people are on time and in suits, a place like it is refreshing. I think that's why Capitol Hill residents flock to it. So, if you're from here, give it a try at least once. If you're visiting DC, do NOT go here. Went to this place with mom and sister. It was a few blocks down from the Airbnb we stayed at during our visit to DC. What I liked most about this place was how personal it is. Got to talk with the owner a bit about the history of the diner and learned about some other things around the area too. Sadly though, the pumpkin pancakes - featured in some of the photos posted on Yelp - were not available. They have different breakfast and lunch specials featured on a whiteboard behind the counter of the diner. Drawbacks? Small space (booths can fit four people if you're all skinny-minnies) so if you're a large group, you can attempt to pull tables together; single tiny unisex bathroom the size of a broom closet (but stocked with toilet paper, paper towels). I was also surprised that our food seemed to take a while to come out. Or maybe the amount of time was seemingly lengthened b/c I was pretty hungry. Once the food arrived though, I gobbled it down. Honestly, I loved the place. My only complaint was the fact that they only accepted cash!! Aside from that, this quaint little hole in the wall was one of the few highlights of my trip. So much so that we went there twice. We had the number 4 which is half a waffle, eggs, and bacon. The waffle was yummy as well as the rest of the food. The first day we got there we waited for a little bit, but we didn't know we were supposed to go inside to order. Once we placed the order it was smooth sailing. This restaurant was perfectly placed in the neighborhood of Capitol Hill. Walking distance from the Capitol Hill building, and everything else. Also they practiced good health measures which was a good thing. And above all I love how kind and welcoming the staff was. It was like coming over and visiting friends. I'm betting you've almost never seen anything on a menu in DC for a buck and change, but at Jimmy T's, that's a very real thing. This is a greasy spoon diner in the most classic sense. Simple food, sweet people, incredible prices. Wide selection of breakfast foods, but they've got many of the other lunchtime diner staples as well (patty melt, blt, etc.). We went for lunch around 1pm on a Friday and there were plenty of seats (booths and tables). Service was very pleasant and brisk. The food isn't anything fancy, but for the cozy atmosphere and cheap prices, I'd give it a strong recommendation. Pro tip: CASH ONLY PS. They've got a leg lamp, so you know they're legit. read more

Pros: great chill neighborhood vibe that contrasts with the pretentiousness you tend to see around here, food is above par for the price, quick service, good coffee, parking wasn't too hard to find in the neighborhood and it's free (!). Fantastic breakfast spot in Capitol Hill! It is pretty much an old school diner (cash only) with classic breakfast foods at a wildly low price for DC. The inside area is small so it can be hard to get a seat if you come at a busy time, but there is also outdoor seating that I will be back to enjoy in nicer weather. Plus, the prices can't be beat for basics (more "normal" pricing for their specials). A combo of pancake, bacon, eggs will set you back maybe $5 + tax +tip. Creamsicle milkshake=nom. Wasn't a big fan of their home fries (I like mine browned, with onions), but all of their other breakfast food I've tried (eggs, coffee, pancakes, grits, bacon) is solid. Cash only. DECOR/AMBIANCE I especially like their "Prices subject to change based on customer attitude" sign. There are a few booths that can squeeze in 4 people, a seated counter, and a lot of 2 person tables. Beautiful view of East Capitol street houses if you can snag a window seat. This is a straight up greasy spoon, so don't be going in expecting a diner with shiny lights. Lots of regulars here for a mellow brunch. SERVICE No problem getting a table for 4 at 10am on a Sunday (perhaps it was too hot outside to be crowded?). But I have seen this place get crowded before, and there's very limited seating. Food takes a while, and it might be hard to get a refill on your water if the place is busy. They're usually short staffed, but I'm not usually in a rush or too concerned about it. Overall, I'm glad to have found a neighborhood joint that is reliable and low key. I really don't have much good to say about Jimmy T's besides the fact that it's historic which is cool, I guess? They are cash only which we weren't notified of until we were already seated and had to leave to go get cash. We end up waiting for forever to be seated because there are only like 5 tables on the inside of the restaurant and then social distancing on top of that. Then all of the meals are only half portions of food which I truly didn't realize the extent of until the food came out. Like who really has a menu centered around a single egg and a half waffle? Even in the midst of all of this, I still had hope because often times hole-in-the-wall diner style breakfast is the best! Unfortunately, I was sadly mistaken. The food took a very long time to come out because there was only one cook and then, I was with 3 other people and all of our food was cooked differently, and the half portions were even smaller than I thought. To the point that we ended up immediately leaving here and going to have lunch. I see a lot of good reviews so I'm not sure if this was just a bad day for Jimmy T's but, this was not a good experience and I wouldn't recommend. read more

It's hard to rate this place with just one scale. I guess that's why the reviews are either 2 stars or 5 stars. If you grew up blue collar, you'll probably like this place. If you're a food snob and grew up spoiled, you'll probably say "ugggh, terrible. how can anyone like this place?" I think some people really like it because it brings back memories of a small diner-like dive from the 80s with mediocre food. That's why I like it; reminds me of the local coffee shop/diner in Jersey I would go to for breakfast with my 'ol man before a hard day's work roofing. I just finished my meal from Jimmy T's Place and felt that a review was NEEDED. I can't remember the last time I had a breakfast this good. Waffles here are amazing! I got the #4 with an extra side of grits, sausage, and home fries. It's worth it to keep a $20 bill in your pocket just in case you stumble upon an amazing place like this. Not carrying around cash is a MISTAKE. You will miss out on fantastic, down to earth food and sweet staff. 10/10 would absolutely come back and bring all of my friends and family. read more
