I knew that I wanted to snag a Yelp review today, a day off from work and a surprisingly warm and sunny day in Indy for early October. While I considered snagging a new restaurant, the simple truth is I didn't want to spend a ton and I really just wanted to hang out and be comfortable. So, I looked up the "cheap eats" search options on Yelp and noticed Jimmy's Diner, a place I'd seen before but had never visited. I really wanted to head to the Southside anyway, so I decided to drive by Jimmy's and check it out. I have a strong affection for the neighborhood that Jimmy's is in - when I first became independent, I lived for about a year in a retirement village about two blocks away. While the area has grown up considerably, it still has a casual warmth and working class feeling to it. Jimmy's Diner is definitely on the "dive" end of the scale, a no-frills kinda joint not too far from a place like Joe's down the street. It may remind some folks of a place like Oasis, but Oasis is pretty touristy and has definitely been decorated to be a destination spot. Jimmy's, on the other hand, is really just a neighborhood diner. Jimmy's has the look of a place that has been around forever, but it has actually only been open since 2016. It sits on a street corner, a decent-sized parking lot offers two accessible spots and ample other places that should make parking easy for most folks. There's a gently inclining ramp into the restaurant - it's not quite ADA, but it's pretty workable. I was able to open the glass door that leads into the dining area without any problem. There's a handful of booth/table options and a lunch counter. The dining room is fairly well packed in, but those in wheelchairs shouldn't have too much of a problem unless it's truly packed. My arrival around 1:30pm created almost no problem finding an appropriate space. It may seem weird, especially for someone who takes critical reviews seriously, to give a no-frills diner a 5-star rating. Let me explain. First off, if you need everything to be shiny and new this is not the place for you. It's an old school diner. While one review commented on it being dirty, that wasn't my experience. The floor/carpeting is pretty worn and kind of grubby, but the rest of the restaurant is pretty close to spotless. I would consider it clean and comfortable. It's simply decorated, a combination of neighborhood photos, kitschy diner decor, and a few quiet, truly subtle symbols of faith. There's a television over by the lunch counter, while a chalkboard advertises the daily specials. I truly felt quite comfortable. I really loved my server, though I never caught her name. She was super friendly, very real, and made sure I got a couple refills of iced tea. She seemed in no rush to get me out the door - a surprise and absolute delight for someone who wanted a quiet lunch. The menu is mostly breakfast/lunch items and their all served all day. They have a pretty broad menu of both breakfast and lunch items - I didn't get the sense that they specialized in one or the other. There's even a statement on the menu that if they have the ingredients they'll try to accommodate your taste buds. I thought that was cool. I was tempted to try a tenderloin, but I ended up going with a burger, fries and my usual unsweetened iced tea. The burger was made from obviously fresh beef on a lightly toasted bun - certainly not gourmet size, but a decent burger. The fries were crinkle cut - again, not a humongous order size but perfectly fair and a terrific value. As has been noted, the prices here are almost stunningly low. I ate for under a ten spot. I actually ate for considerably under a ten spot. I could have added a piece of pie and still been slightly under $10. Seriously. While it's possible to go over $10, it's the exception and not the rule. They do take credit cards and they do have free wifi. They have single-user bathrooms that looked fairly accessible, though I did not actually use one. In a lot of neighborhood diners, you can easily feel like an outsider. I never did. My server was incredible, Jimmy was mostly behind the counter cooking but friendly, and most of the customers were also friendly. So, that's the 5-star rating. I loved everything about this experience from the food to the service to the atmosphere and the efforts at accessibility. I'd easily go back, which would be out of the way for me, and am already thinking "When can I go back?" So, if you're comfy with a casual neighborhood dive then Jimmy's Diner is definitely a worthy stop. read more

This no-frills diner has fast & tasty diner food. The menu prices are insanely cheap. 1 egg is 75¢! A breakfast sandwich is $3! It was pretty tasty and I loved the crispy potatoes aka home fries. Sit at the bar to be entertained by the incredible multitasking skills of Jimmy as he cooks ALL the orders. It was mesmerizing. Service was very pleasant. I'm rating this as a what is is....a serious pearl of the 'Greasy Spoon' genre. First, I was concerned with the allegation that Covid-19 safety measures were not in practice and I called to check. After reassurance and upon arrival, I found the negative claims to be false. Jimmy's is owned and operated by Jimmy and his wife and provide a wide range of breakfast and lunch menu options with something to satisfy every taste. A real local foodie dive...I mean it! Good coffee, excellent omelets, nicely grilled hash browns and very well seasoned biscuits and gravy (though I also add sauce). My interest was piqued by the review for Hobo Stew and, though early (8a), I was hopeful that this lunch item was ready. OMG! Did I say OMG? The portions are substantial and the prices are good. Jimmy, the owner and cook, came out from behind the counter to ask how everything was. I have gotten take out from here a couple times. It's always been quick and easy. The waitress on duty is a seasoned one so the service is good just not at warp speed. The cook/ owner is always friendly. Greets me as I enter. Mind you I generally order at off peak times so it's easy for him to chat with me for a moment. The food is good. I have only had breakfast but have never been disappointed. In fact, I appreciate how close they are to downtown with reasonable prices. Sometimes a girl doesn't want to pay $15 for breakfast. In fact $10 will get you a big enough breakfast you can have left overs for lunch. Looking forward to checking them out for dinner soon! This is a no frills, diner. Reminds me of diner back on the east coast. I am happy to have this place only a few miles away. I just don't have the heart to give a business a 1 star, even if it well deserved! I'll just start it by saying that they ABSOLUTELY do NOT follow cdc guidelines for restaurants. Owner was walking around talking to customer, also he's the cook and handles the money doing all of this without wearing a face mask and gloves. The waitress was also massless as for 70% of the customers that walked and out. Very disappointed excuse the food wasn't bad and prices were reasonable! Guys... Food is really good, and you can't beat the prices. This is a locally owned place, obviously, and the owner is also the cook. We have been four or five times and have yet to be disappointed. I usually get a breakfast burrito with a side of potatoes and my wife usually gets a few a la carte items. If you're on the south side, definitely check it out. Pro tip- bring cash, as they are charging a 3.49% credit or debit card fee. This added almost $1 to our last meal there. read more

If your aunt started up a diner with her great food and modern decor, it might be like this. Jimmy's just reopened today after being closed almost a month for a remodel! Before, you might have stumbled into Luke's in Stars Hollow, with a much friendlier proprietor than Luke. The friendly service and great cooking remains, but now the decor is updated! It looks like something you might see in Fountain Square now. The food remains excellent. There's a daily special which might be one of several Manhattans with homemade mashed potatoes, or it might be steak or meatloaf or pasta. They have a huge list of sides, and always have a couple of homemade pies and desserts like Blackberry Dumplings or Apple Cobbler.
