We've been here many times but our most recent visit might be our last. We've enjoyed many Peruvian meals here and good customer service. Our last trip we weren't greeted. After staring at the menu for a few minutes we had to tell them we're ready to order, apparently we interrupted their conversation. The food on our last visit was subpar by anyone's standards. Wanting to finally try their Mexican food, I ordered the fajitas. This came out as almost a soup floating in the iron plate. Her mixed Saltado was missing any sauce / gravy. It was always so good but this was so heartbreaking. I received the Chica morada, a drink I made daily in Peru when I used to live there, in a plastic tub that is meant for takeout. The other dish which is an epic Peruvian national dish, papas a la huancayo, was so bad that I ended up leaving most of it. It's really hard to find Peruvian food and also expensive. I've eaten here a few times now and the food is delicious. The Peruvian fries are delicious, especially dipped in the creamy sauce. I'd do without all the salt though, especially because they are already deep fried. I don't eat all, because they serve such a large portion and it's heavy. The Vegan tacos are flavored well, they just fall apart due to too much moisture, the rice, bean and veggie burrito is also flavorful, massive in size, can't finish all! When you walk inside, you go to the counter to place your order and the tables are self seating. The interior is outdated but don't let that fool you from their delicious food. My boss and I ordered the lomo saltado and chicken saltado. It was DELICIOUS! The dishes were so flavorful and the amount that you get is fair for the price that you pay (although it is a bit on the expensive side). Look no further if you are in the mood for Peruvian food. Ok, I am not an expert on Peruvian food...I had it a bunch when I was on the east coast but not so much on this coast. I will say at the chip bar there is a habanero salsa that is straight up no joke. It's hot but addicting. When I first tried it. I was like oh I was not ready for that but throughout my meal I kept going back to it because it was really good. They also had this avocado salsa that I really liked. It. Helped like cut the burn. I just came in for a quick bite because I've been meaning to try this place for a long time. I just never really got the chance because I'm never in this area but we split the lomo Saltado and we are still pretty full. Really tender good pieces of beef in a wine sauce with rice and fries. Solid. I really maybe want to try some of the other stuff on the menu. They had a really big menu which I guess would be my only complaint and I know that's a weird thing to complain about, but I was looking all over the wall online and the paper menu they had. None of it really aligned so I just picked what I thought looked good. Luckily, it was really good. We had the Aji de Gallina (shredded chicken in a unique creamy yellow sauce) Birria tacos (with crispy cheese and a thick, almost gravy like dipping sauce) and Lomo Saltado (beef in a delicious, mouth watering sauce). The food here is so heavily infused with different cultural ingredients. Their habanero sauce is fire! I mean literally! It's so spicy yet it pairs so well with the entrees. The way they fry their seafood is so nice and light on the crust. Wait time for the food does take awhile compare to typical Mexican restaurants, but it's a good thing because the food will always be made to order. I love this place! Jimmy is very personable, and he makes one of the best salsas I've ever had. It's common for me to stop in and get an absolutely huge portion of his salsa to go. It's that good. The ají de gallina is really tasty, too, and the lunch special is a good value and very filling. I know this is a Peruvian place, but their Mexican menu is also good, and the street tacos are amazing. I have some coupons from "Restaurant.com", so I am using them to try new places. I like peruvian food, and was thrilled to find a place in Sacramento that does it. If you were to look in the dictionary under "Hole in the wall", you'd probably find a picture of this place. Just an unassuming place on Auburn Blvd, between Howe and Fulton. But while the atmosphere is simple, the food is not. I started out with a small ceviche mixto. Shrimp, mussels, calamari and swai fish. I love swai. It's a white southeast Asian fish, that has a sweet, mild taste. For a "small", it was still a very large portion. The seafood was marinated beautifully. It came with purple onions, and a soft piece of sweet potato on the side that was so delectable. For my main dish, I had the "Lomo Saltado." Basically, beef stir fry. Stir fried with onions, tomatoes, and herbs. It came with both french fries, AND rice on the side. The rice was great, the french fries were just OK. The fries were the one mis-step of an amazing meal. Peruvian food is heavily influenced by Chinese immigration, to which the fusion has it's own name. "Chifa." This was a Chinese style stir fry, sure, but with very complex Latin flavors. So very very good. So much food, I had both some of the ceviche, and some of the main dish to take home. This has to be Sacramento's best-kept secret. And considering its one of the ONLY restaurants to offer authentic, homemade Peruvian food, this was a place I had bookmarked for a very long time. Which takes me on a trip to "Jimmy's Peruvian Restaurant & Catering". Located directly on Auburn Blvd. (right next to Morse Ave.), this place is parallel to the Capitol City Freeway (Business 80). I came here with my lady on a Saturday afternoon around 12:00pm. Parking was relatively easy to find as we parked right outside the business. Don't let the location fool you; it looks like its in a very questionable area considering this part of town isn't the safest. But once you walk inside, all of that will quickly diminish. The inside itself isn't quite as spacious as there is seating for only 5-6 parties. There is no outdoor seating either so if this place is filled up during the dinner hours, you may have to take your food to-go. However, we came before lunch and there was only one other party enjoying their food. The aromatic smells of the Peruvian food was already a sign that this place would be unique. Let me tell you about their menu. They offer both Peruvian AND Mexican food! This made the ordering process simple as I wanted to take my first try at Peruvian while my lady stuck with Mexican. Since I had not eaten this type of food, our waiter highly recommended their "Lomo Saltado" entree. This consisted of beef that is sauteed in red wine vinegar, soy sauce, red onions, tomatoes, and topped with fresh cilantro. I chose a side of white rice and beans. My lady opted for their "Chicken Enchilada" entree complete with beans as her side. Both our entrees came out simultaneously and were piping hot. After taking the first bite of my Lomo Saltado, I was pleasantly surprised with the uniqueness of the seasoings; especially the beef that was coated well in the sauces. Its a much different twist than Mexican food but in a good way. The white rice was moist while the beans were creamy but not too salty. It was definitely a breath of fresh air but it didn't stand out as being off-the-wall amazing. I do want to come back to check out some of their other offerings, primarily their Jaleas (fish offerings) and Aguaditos (soups). With that said and done, "Jimmy's Peruvian Restaurant" is worth checking out. As I am a strong supporter for local family-owned businesses, the service, prices, and food was overall a good positive experience. When I factor all of these together, I will give this place an above average four-star rating. read more

I had the lomo saltado which was pretty good. My preference would be more gravy/sauce and less purple onions, but that's a personal preference. They have a self serve chips and salsa bar.. after eating at Mexican restaurants the past few months--I am glad to finally have a decent salsa. We got the 3 birriatacos and 2 supreme asada tacos and they were soooooooo delicious.
