How anyone walks into this place, looks around and decides it's a good place to buy food is beyond me. The place is DISGUSTING!! Why haven't they been shut down by the board of health? The floors in front and behind the counter are filthy. There are flies everywhere. The booths look like they have never been cleaned at all. I've worked in or with food-service type things most of my life. This place could use a FOH/management reorg- the product is *always* high quality, but the service *always* seems incredibly disorganized. THAT SAID, the donuts are amazing, and while they don't have any creative offerings, the run of the mill selections are outstanding and higher quality than even the boston area boutique spots; I've sent many a day-tripping hipster here- right off the train- and they all agree. The basic cinnamon/sugared donut is analogous to a scratch made, perfectly handled, hand-tossed brick oven Neapolitan pizza, allowing the simplicity of high quality ingredients and proper prep shine through. Go ahead, laugh, but, for real, it's a true story. A rando weirdo/offbeat weekly special would keep me coming back more often, however. Baked goods are standard and of good quality. I like how they offer individual cake slices in the cold case. The bagel-dogs are also great! Maybe stuff some cheese in there, but whatevs. They are almost never available- does the limited availability make them taste better to me? I'd like to not have to wonder about that. Bagels are good, cream cheese blends are fantastic and properly applied, great balance. The sausage on everything bagel will beat anything else in town for drive through service, especially the boring national brands. Lunch-type sandwiches are great as well, deli meats and wet salads on bagels, all good quality and pretty much what you'd expect for a place like this. The coffee scene is a total disaster in general. Hot they are on-par with low end coffee-shop / convenience store level which honestly is just fine for us in this blue collar town, it's great in the winter. Butttt, Iced is all wrong, very bitter, I cant find the right way to order it so that it tastes like actual coffee without being all cream or all sugar. I don't know what they're doing for iced- are they brewing ahead and cooling? Leftovers? It's cool, I dont judge, but I wish they offered a cold brew. They'd get better results by simply steeping their same ground coffee in water for a day, then filtering and later diluting with appropriate amount of water at time of pour. It's not difficult, expensive or even *fancy* guys come on! Yet, I persist, because the food is that good. Having to order 2-3 times used to annoy me but I've grown more tolerant with my years. It's not the workers fault, they just work there. They're trying their best to get my order right and they usually do, in fact I cant remember a single mistake on my food in decade and a half of living here. I bet they get plenty of attitude from customers having to re-order so many times, so mad cheers to them for remaining pleasant throughout the entirety of the experience. So. Yeah. This place is a true-hidden gem. Absolute brilliance BOH, total mess FOH. It kind of baffles me how they do the DIFFICULT things so well but the easy things so poorly. But if that's what keeps it hidden, and if that's what keeps the prices affordable, then I'm so with it because I sure as hell cant afford to eat at the kind of places I'm comparing this place to. I loved the bagels we got here. Asiago and spinach. Their veggie cream cheese is filled with real veggies. Just really, really good. My husband also got donuts from here, and they are just how I like them, dense and chewy. The ordering was a pain in the butt. We had to order everything many times. We ended up with an extra coffee. Jim's baked goods are fresh. Their doughnuts are delicious. What turns me off about Jim's is that they do not post prices for 99% of there items. For this reason I usually avoid not only Jim's but most stores who take this approach. Because the train is across the street and I have a half hour wait I will put my principals aside and do business there. Often I will purchase a coffee and a bagel w/ butter. Today I purchased just a bagel and realized that they charge $1.00 for butter on your bagel. Now a dollar is not going to effect me however it's excessive. I blame myself for not following my own principals. Sorry Jim's but my money does not " spread" like that. read more

I had a doughnut, a bagel, and a coffee. Forget the fish, the next time I go to Gloucester it will be for these guys's breakfast treats, it was AWESOME. I consider myself somewhat of a bagel and doughnut fanboy, I've been known to drive up to 2 hrs away any given morning for a good doughnut or bagel and these guys definitely make the cut, we swung by here on our way to an early am whale watch and we were not disappointed, the service might have been slow but we didn't really notice, it seemed par to us but we weren't in a big hurry. We sat inside so I can't speak to the drive through speed or service. The coffee was piping hot with the perfect amt of cream and sugar added for me (I dislike having to add my own), the bagel was crisp on the outside, baked to perfection but warm and soft on the inside just the way I like it. They had a great selection of standard cream cheeses but they also had a few house flavors with their own spin (such as maple walnut instead of the standard honey walnut). The doughnuts were terrific as well, I got the boston cream which was similarly cooked to perfection, golden brown outside with a soft inside, the doughnut was cold when I got it so I don't know if these guys cook in house or if getting a warm doughnut is an option here (my favorite doughnuts are the ones right out of the fryer where the inside literally melts in your mouth). The cream was perfectly spread throughout the middle so there was some in every bite (not just a little line of it going from one side to the other like you get at some places) and the chocolate topping generously covered the top, it was the kind that turns completely solid when it hits room temperature so that it made a type of hard-ish chocolate shell on top (my preference to the gooey chocolate top you find on many other boston creams which, although tasty, is a mess to eat through) In sum, I had a terrific experience, I will definitely return and these guys are well worth the 5 stars! read more

I must admit, the baked goods are outstanding and the coffee is delicious but there are a couple things that drive me nuts. For one, they need to work on their consistency, Coffee and bagel quality specifically. Two, there are only two people that act as if they enjoy their job and make me feel like a valued customer. Three, is the price of the large iced coffee. Yes, the large coffee is very large but if you pour their size medium into a large cup you don't have much space left. The price of a medium coffee is about 250. A large coffee is 375. So I'm paying an extra dollar and $.25 for not that much more product. On the plus side, I cannot resist their bacon and chive cream cheese. Everyone needs to try it. read more

Way better than Dunkin'--dense and chewy bagels, all of the usual suspects when it comes to bagel and cream cheese flavors plus some fun ones. I can't believe no one has mentioned that the servers, at least two of them, are deaf or hard of hearing. I think that explains a lot of your service issues. I speak my orders slowly and clearly, make sure they are looking at me, and if I have a large complicated order I just write it down before I go and hand it to her. They are the nicest sweetest girls and I haven't gotten an order wrong yet. This morning I went into Jim's Bagel. I had a wheat bagel, and it seemed to be that there were little nats in it. I was looking in the cases, and they were absolutely filthy!! There were flies everywhere, walking the dusty blue light fixtures like a tightrope. The old bat that was waiting on me, was extreamly rude, as she was talking to someone else, and seemed disinteredted in taking my order. My order was messed up, as I asked for a spinach bagel with bacon cream cheese, and I got veggie. As I tried to pay with my credit card, the machine did not work, as well as apparently the cream cheese station, seeing as there was a bucket of filthy water under it. The owner of the place seemed very un-sanitary, and he was picking up cakes with his bare hands, and placing them on the filthy, disgusting table. The floors had gunk all over them, and a few of the girls found it un-necessary to wear gloves! I don't know how this place isn't shut down by the Massachusetts Board of Health. I plan on calling them as soon as possible, and will never come back to that filthy establishment again. I will let all family and friends know about this obscene place, and will be sure of it closing down. read more

Jim's offers the convenience of a drive-thru, without the crappy food, & mediocre coffee served up by Dunk's. My bagel sandwich was very tasty, served on a bagel that tasted fresh from a bagel shop (unlike the chains). Coffee was also very good & flavorful. I'll definitely be back. read more

One word to describe that facility is disgusting! I have been back and forth with that place for years because of the nasty amount of trash they have lying outside the back enterance, the hanging speaker for the drive thru, the trash on the floor, the boxes piled high every where and the unsanitariness. Today, I decided to give them another shot which in turn was my last time. I walked through the back enterance and there was the usual trash, as I walked through the back hallway there were boxes piled high- definately not safe for anyone to be walking by. As I stood in line I looked over and saw the cake decorating area was a mess. Once I was waited on I got Jim -the owner and I thought I would be getting great service well although he was pleasant, he rang me up took my money, gave me my change and proceeded to make my bagel with no gloves and no handwashing!!! Now I'm sorry but that was the last straw it is state law that when handling food you are to wear gloves and you are not to handle money and food unless you wash your hands and wear gloves. I have been going to this donut and bake shop infrequently over the years. Their baked goods are excellent; especially, the lobster tails and the coconut donuts. However, in my last three visits, something strange is going on. When paying for my order, I feel like I am playing three card monte. The first incident is when I handed them a $20. There was a delay in cashing it out, since they lacked the necessary $1 bills. After moving around between two registers, they made change, but the attitude of the counter help during the process was not friendly. The second incident, I presented them with a credit card. My $9.40 purchased was entered into the credit card approval for $34.90. They would not process the credit, but gave me the cash difference. The most recent incident involved cash again. After my recent credit card experience, I decided it would be better to use cash. A mistake. After ringing up the order, they again played with the cash between and envelope near the register and the second register. Once they had my change of $11.10 they gave me $11. No big deal right. What's a dime. Beyond the principle, just image over the course of a week with hundreds of customers, what this could total. Bottom line, the food is good, but watch your change. It had left and uncomfortable feeling and I will not longer frequent this local merchant. I like to support local business, but this will be definitely an exception to my rule. read more

Went in this morning for 3 coffees and a half dozen donuts. There were a minimum of 4 people behind the counter. One obviously new and training. It took 4 different times and 3 different people to get my coffee order straight. When the new girl needed assistance other employees stood there and started arguing with each other about who told her to do what. Meanwhile we were left standing there for a good 5 minutes while they had their ridiculous discussion. Very unprofessional, and NOT the way to train new people OR to behave in front of customers. read more

It's crazy that this place has only three stars because everything here is delicious!!! Everything is made fresh, the bagels, donuts, pastries, and cakes! It is our favorite place for breakfast and our kids love it too! The bagels are delicious, and I've never managed to stray beyond our favorite flavors of sesame and everything. The chocolate, Boston Creme, coconut and butternut donuts are incredible, we haven't tried the others yet. There's a maple bacon one that looks interesting. The muffins are great, pistachio is our favorite. Our kids love the lobster tails for pastries. Some stuff does sell out fast, but if your favorite is sold out, you are sure to find a new one! You can also order breakfast sandwiches, delicious! They have lunch sandwiches which I have never tried, but I am impressed by the personal service and dedication to quality here, so I am sure those are good too. They have a drive through window which is convenient, but if you've never been, you should go inside just to see the array of goodies. The staff is friendly and helpful. The coffee is great, with a variety of choices. There's a decent amount of seating inside and it's a place where people gather. NECN is usually on the TV with the sound off. Donuts have that freshly-fried taste, and they are that more dense, crispy donut that I like rather than the light, yeasty donut, though that is a matter of preference they are done well. This is a tasty place for bagels, muffins & cakes. The bagel are not like the ones at New York but they are still delicious. My favorite is the the Asiago cheese bagel. I made a sandwich with sliced turkey & avocado. It was delicious! I also recommend the veggie cream cheese. Sunday morning was my first trip to Jim's Bakery. I thought it was great! There were limited bagels there when my dad and I got there but within 5 minutes the bagels were hot and ready! I wish that this place had competition. I love their bagels, but the Staff needs training in customer service, etiquette, but most importantly, proper food preparation and hygiene!!! There were flys crawling all over the "free sample" next to the register. There were cookies squished-up against the display glass and one on the cooling grill below. What really turned my stomach was watching an employee sneeze into both of her hands and then continue pulling muffins out of the display case and place them into a bag for a customer. Every time I go into this place, I always get disgusted. No one else in Gloucester makes a great bagel, and that is the only reason I go back a couple of times a year.
