First time at the new location with a big group of friends. Given the unbelievable popularity of this place it is not a good place to go on a weekend for breakfast with more than four people since most of the seating is four person booths. I had only gone to the old location once so it has baffled me on why this place is such a hot spot - the food was decent but did not seem head and shoulders above other diners around town. I think this is more about it being the trendy place to go. The owner and the staff are super friendly and efficient getting the masses seated but I gave up asking for another water after three times... My Monte Cristo was good and so were all the other dishes ordered by our big group. Again I am not sure it is worth the long waits when there are so many other diners in town serving similar quality of food. read more

I have been here twice since it transformed from Jim's Too and yes it does live up to the hype. It's so hard not to lapse into superlatives and hyperbole when describing this place, but it is without a doubt one of the best diners Roch has to offer. Everything I order here, be it simple scrambled eggs, buckwheat pancakes, OJ, hash browns is all SO good. I am one of those that always leaves a little on my plate when I go out but not here. The servers are so incredibly efficient at turning the tables over here and with the prices being so ridiculously cheap I go out of my way not to linger and chat after I'm done so that they can get some new customers in quickly. Thank goodness it's back! Jim's has always been my favorite diner and I can't wait to overindulge on their hash browns once again. The new renovations make this place look like a much fancier establishment. It's very bright with the sun coming through the big windows facing E. Main. Super sound proof too - there were workers running a wood chopper outside and you couldn't hear a peep! The setup looks great - about 10 booths and a larger L-shaped counter area (compared to the former Winton location). Clean and organized. Still cash-only. ATM onsite. As for the food - perfect. It's the same as it's always been and the menu features the majority of dishes from the old menus with a few new updates. All the staff are the same too - great to see familiar faces. The hash browns continue to be what I say are the best in Rochester. The ideal crispy exterior - thin pancake-like preparation so there isn't an excess of mushy shredded potato. My go-to is the late riser: sausage (2 patties) or bacon depending on my mood, 2 eggs over easy, sourdough toast, and hash browns. Other favorites include the biscuits and gravy special when it's available or ordering lunch - a simple club sandwich done right every time. I tend to opt for the tuna sandwich or the turkey club. The reason this place is so good is because they use quality ingredients and it's consistently prepared. It's affordable too - $5-8 per dish. I learned about this place from my Yelp friends. I saw them review and bookmark it so we decided to give it a try. I've never been to the other Jim's, never knew it existed. The place is a decent size but when you're waiting and there's usually a wait, it can get uncomfortable because the waiting area is Tiny. You feel like you're on top of people who are eating and staring at them waiting to leave. That aspect reminds me of fishers station. The part that reminds me of James Brown's place on Culver, is that you can watch the cooks make your food. They are very busy and very good at what they do. The hashbrowns were crispy, just like i like them, and probably the best I've had in an extremely long time. I asked for well done and they were perfect. My breakfast sandwich was also great. The egg was over easy, just like I asked for. I like my sandwiches sloppy and it was! The ham was thinly shaved, not thick slabs that I don't like. Jim's from Winton and Jim's Too from this Main St. location have combined. Everything you loved about either Jim's is still the same. Same staff, same amazing breakfast foods, Same long line (if you were used to the Winton place). The food is as good as any diner in town but gone is the dingy diner feel. They dumped some money into this place and while it took over a year to reopen, it's back and it's awesome. You won't recognize it inside. They really did a beautiful job. The layout is changed, pictures of Elaina and her kids on the walls, beautiful lighting and paint colors. Just an awesome job. Digital signage has replaced the handwritten lunch special board. Even the cushions have been recovered! I hate the fact that everyone from original Jim's has apparently heard of this place. The beauty of Jim's too is that it was right down the road and you could walk right in and get a table. That's history. by 9:45 there was a massive line. I freaking love this place. Disclaimer: I have never been to the previous location. This was based solely on a visit to the new location on E. Main St. The Good: Walking into Jim's, we were greeted by a friendly hostess (and a long line). Even though she kept calling me some random name, she was very sweet. The staff at Jim's were the best part of the breakfast experience. They were very friendly and helpful. My coffee mug never got below the 2/3 mark because of the extremely attentive servers. The food was quite cheap. I got a shaved steak, egg, cheese on a roll for $4 and added home fries for $1.10. The sandwich was exactly as described and tasty (I really liked the roll). I also got the carrot coffee cake as a side. Yes, you can get coffee cake as a side. Oh, America, you're the best. The Bad: My husband said his buffalo chicken wrap was ok and nothing to write home about (he was told the crispy chicken option was unavailable as they do not run the fryer on Sundays). Also, I can't believe I married a guy who gets a buffalo chicken wrap during brunch hours. Seriously, dude? My other dining companions were underwhelmed with their french toast and thought the granola/yogurt was store bought. My home fries were (quite) under done and needed salt/pepper. I was not thrilled with the carrot coffee cake. It didn't taste like much except the cream cheese frosting on top. The Weird: This is not a negative remark - just an observation of something odd: We stared at the check for quite a while, trying to figure out where the server wrote in the total. We then asked a passing server where the total was. She informed us that since tax has to be added (?!), the hostess totals all checks and collects payment. I have to say it is the first time I have ever seen that system. We just totalled the check ourselves and dropped off cash with the hostess. So, if you can't figure out where the total is...it is not your fault. In summary, it is a classic American diner owned by/staffed with incredibly nice people. I believe it is the service/low prices that make the experience special and not necessarily the food (which was okay but not great or unique). p.s They accept cash only. Best brunch spot in all of Rochester. Went on a weekday and it was still really packed, although my friend and I were seated pretty quickly. I got the Frittata #3 which was the perfect amount of food, and it was vegetarian. It was super tasty, and a fun breakfast dish. Certainly one of the more unique vegetarian brunch/breakfast dishes in all of Rochester. Just doing the two eggs and toast can get boring for vegetarians - this place was absolutely more exciting! Had kind of a disappointing breakfast here this morning. My artichoke and swiss omelet was dry, over-cooked, and kind of an unappealing grayish-brown color. Could not taste the artichokes at all. The hashbrowns were undercooked (not crispy) and super bland. Server at the counter did not check in, otherwise I would have let her know.
