I just moved into the area and needed to find a good place to get my pants shortened. I've driven by this place a few times and after reading all the good yelp reviews, I decided to take my pants and my boyfriend's jeans here. The owner (sweet Chinese man) was super nice. Unfortunately I think their services are way overpriced and take forever. Like another reviewer mentioned, they charge $15 to simply hem a pair of pants. The guy also said he wouldn't have my pants ready for 2 weeks. Elsewhere I've only had to pay $8-10 to hem pants and it's never taken more than 5 days, tops. When I went to pick up my pants in the morning before running some errands, the owner said he didn't have a credit card machine and that I had to go the liquor store's ATM next door. Was 10AM and the liquor store wasn't open. Ended up leaving and coming back later in the afternoon. Pretty annoyed they don't take credit cards. My fault for not paying attention to the yelp review but these guys need to get with the times, for real. On a final note, my boyfriend's jeans smelled like MOTH BALLS when I picked them up. WHY? Even after several washes, his jeans to this day still stink of moth balls. read more

Imagine someone showing up at the door of an alteration shop on an electric bike, with a 21" luggage bag on his back, full of clothes to alter. That was me. (Guys Business Shirts) I recently purchased six button-down semi-dress or chambray shirts from three leading online retailers. I require tall-XL size for overall body length, etc., and flexibility in the shoulders especially to support cycling, but the (original) shirts were all WAY TOO HUGE in the body (mid-torso and below). Could I have all these shirts tailored to remove 3"-4" in the body (depending on the shirt), without making the shirt patterns look strange, and without ruining the fit in the upper chest and shoulders? Yes - and JJ Alterations did it. (Suit) Next, I have a custom-made suit and the pants had to be let out a bit in the waist, and the jacket required repair of a small hole on the shoulder top. JJ Alterations fixed this $700+ suit better than I would have thought possible. (Wedding Dresses) As for wedding dresses, I've never been fitted for one of those (grins), but he used a method of tailoring on my shirts that (he said) vaguely approximated wedding-dress methodology, and he did a very fine job. Take what you've got to JJ Alterations to have it custom-tailored to fit better than anything on the market, for what you might have spent on gas and/or tax. This place is just 2 easy blocks from the Hillsdale Caltrain station. You don't need a car, a taxi, or even a bike, but my money says you'll be satisfied at very reasonable or outright best-of-class prices. read more

This was by far THE WORST experience I EVER had. She is completely unorganized and clearly mismanages her business. She quoted me a time and date that my bridesmaid dress would be ready. When I had returned a week later, she asked that I come the next day to pick up because she wasn't finished. Unable to argue, I was forced to make time the next day to pick it up. I called her that evening letting her know I was unable to pick up before her shop closed. She told me the dress was done and that I could come by anytime to pick up. I asked my boyfriend to grab it the next day and she was unable to find the dress as he described and gave her the phone number associated with my ticket. She then told him that I had to call her and verify the phone number. So I called from work and gave her my phone number reminding her of the conversation we had last night and that she confirmed my dress was done. She STILL COULD NOT FIND MY BRIDESMAID DRESS. She had mixed up the tickets and refused to give him my dress even though he could see it hanging from where he stood. I texted him images of my ticket, the receipt, a photo of me in the dress and she still gave him a hard time. At that point, she had to admit she mixed up the tickets and hand over my dress. She then asked if we had paid, which we did, the day we dropped off my dress (HUGE MISTAKE ON MY END) and accused my boyfriend of not paying even though I had an image of the receipt. At that point, he walked out as she continued to accuse him. DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOU WANT YOUR ITEMS TO BE POTENTIALLY LOST OR GIVEN AWAY BECAUSE THEY SWAPPED TICKETS. OR IF YOU ENJOY PEOPLE FALSELY ACCUSING YOU OF THINGS. Then go here, it specializes in those two areas. read more

I've had many alterations here and have always been happy. They've even fixed the hem on some pants that another place messed up. Recently, I had a dress altered - straps shortened and sides taken in - and asked to pick it up in only a few days. She had it ready and it fit perfectly! She also always suggests I try on items when I come to pick them up to make sure I'm happy, which most places don't do. Definitely recommend for your everyday alterations. read more

Wow, I guess YMMV or someone was having a lousy day. Rude, condescending and just straight mean. This lady told me what I wanted was wrong so I said ok, this is her area of expertise. I told her that i wanted the jacket length shortened a little, she says that's $35 more dollars, implying that her price was high or I wouldn't pay it or something. I'm still not sure what she was implying, it was an Armani suit. Never once had i asked about costs. Then she ignored what I asked for on the pants but luckily someone I was with caught it and when I asked her if she was putting a cuff on the pants like I requested , she said no there wasn't enough fabric. I said alright then I'll take the pants back, since that's all that was being done to them. She angrily grabs the pants and gives them back then proceeds to grab the jacket and pulls all the pins and hands it to me all huffy. I asked her what he was doing she said "well,you wanted it back." I told her just the pants but forget it. Got it done for a lot less, in half the time and WITH THE CUFF that couldn't be done. Guess the other tailor must know magic, or maybe she's just a real tailor. Regardless, I see many positive reviews so your mileage may vary. I hope no one has the experience I did. read more

i'm writing this review as i sit (well stand) and wait for her to correct 2 of the 5 items altered (and none of them i am pleased with) for $67 total. you HAVE to pay first and she kept asking me if the price was okay as if she knew it was too high for a sweater to be taken in, two t-shirts altered and the arms on a cardigan made tighter (around the wrist). english is not her 1st language but she speaks money just fine, work was sloppy and nothing irks me more when you speak shit in your language thinking others don't understand what you're saying. Yelpers, save your time and money and go to a place of business that understands your requests, takes pride in their work and is fair with their pricing. no highway robbery shit - never again! read more

This place gets 3 stars for being clean, spacious, and alterations always well done, but loses two for prices that I find to be a bit too expensive and a tailor whos a bit too nosy and over opinionated for my taste. Since moving from Southern Cal I've been looking for a great place to have my clothing altered because I tend to never quite fit my clothes correctly and decided to come here after reading the Yelp reviews....I believe myself to generally be a very pleasant, if not civil, person but when I was told that I buy too many clothes followed by a flurry of questions regarding my schooling and job (as he gave me very skeptical looks) I got a little irritated. And to top it off, on one occasion I was told that I wanted my dress too short (which I did NOT...I like to keep it classy, not trashy)! About hemming jeans - service was VERY poor! I sent in a pair of jeans to be hemmed; was told to pick up in almost TWO WEEKS. Went to pick it up but he had lost my measurement! He told me to come back the next day. I did, and he still was not finished. I had to wait around for 20 minutes for it to finally get done. Hemming in 2+ weeks, after 3 visits. Horrible! read more

I've had pants shortened here a few times, the seams were high quality and I was pleased. John must be overworked or something now, because he royally screwed up my latest job. I brought in a pair of jeans on Friday, again for shortening, he said it would be 1 week (I guess that's his standard turnaround these days). Went to pick them up, and he tried to give me someone else's jeans! Apparently he had switched tags and someone else walked out with mine earlier. Well, by Monday that customer figured out the problem and returned for the swap, so I went back to pick mine up. He didn't even offer me a discount for the hassle of going back there twice and getting them 3 days late. Then when I tried them on, they are at least 0.5-1 inch too long!! I mean, dragging on the ground. What a waste of time and money on my part. Not going back. read more

They charge TOO much!!! I would not recommend this place. There were 2 ways to alter my dress, the more expensive, more difficult way (b/c of the lining underneath my dress and the way the dress was made) and the cheaper, less difficult way (just to shorten it and take out some of the colored material). When she priced it out she said it'd be $45 and that's including her so-called $5 discount (and that was for the cheaper, easier way to alter the dress). I took it somewhere else where they charged me $25 for the cheaper way to alter my dress and $30 for the more difficult alteration. She charged $20 more for the same dress. Ridiculous! I think JJ Alterations has fairly good prices (hem pants for $15, shorten jacket sleeves for $25). He seems to have a high level of integrity and did a good job on the basics. I brought my prom dress here to be hemmed and to fix the zipper from bunching up. The women helping me had the dress for about a week and a half and called me almost every other day to come try the dress on for her again. I agreed with her on my last fitting that the dress would be ready by 2 the next day. I went at 5 to get it and it still was not finished. She then told us to come the next day at 5 to get it. So knowing she was very unreliable I called to see what time it would be ready knowing now it was a day before the event and she told me 8 I explained to her that I was planning on 5. now couldn't make it at 8 to pick it up so she then literally screamed at me over the phone about how much work she had to do when I hadn't seen her do anything at that shop except eat and watch tv. Long story short my dress was ready the night before it was nice work but not nice enough to deal with that women. Would never go back. read more

This guy is awesome. He re-tailored a leather jacket for me and did a great job. And he just re-covered the collar of a jacket using a piece of cloth from the hood and did an amazing job. Far better than that female seamstress shop owner in San Mateo who i was very disappointed with in their service. I had the very simple straps on a dress shortened by about 1 inch, and it cost $20. I am not sure if that is typical for this area, but that seems a bit steep to me for such a small thing. I have paid close to that to have more major alterations at other places before. Also, he takes cash only. DO NOT GO HERE! The only reason I went to this place is because it received good reviews. Despite the fact that I knew it was going to be a little more expensive than most places, I was willing to take the risk. I needed an expensive pair of jeans taken in about 2.5 inches in the waist, including the leg part so they look even and more tight fitting. When I picked them up today, of course I was expecting the jeans to be a better fit. I WAS WRONG. DO NOT GO HERE! I am so dissapointed with this guy, it's like he didn't even alter my jeans at all...ANYWHERE ON THEM! They weren't tight fitting at all! AND I'M NOT EXAGGERATING. And I didn't lose weight. I'm so confused and upset that I paid $25 and waited over 2 weeks to get the worst "alteration?" DO NOT GO HERE! I completely agree with the other people who gave this guy poor reviews because I've seen it myself. So if you want to pay ridiculous prices, wait 2 weeks and not get what you ask for, it's up to you. I feel like I wasted my time and money and I wish he would have just told me from the beginning that he couldn't do my alterations because honestly that's how I felt when I got home today and tried on my pants. brought a dress here and was very happy with the work that was done. john is very friendly and personable and offered to fix any part of the dress if it did not fit well after the original alteration. i was a little nervous because he made a recommendation that i should not take it in at the waist/hip area but since i had seen the dress on other bridemaids and knew how it should fit i pushed and he agreed and it turned out beautifully. the cost felt a little high ($60) but i hear that is about average for a bridesmaid dress. easy to find parking. right off el camino. jus make sure you bring cash though so you don't have to pay the fee at the generic ATM next door. no cards accepted. read more

I mean what a nice Asian lady she is! Gave my expensive fabric (200 $) for making 2 pieces of curtains. I wanted the print of both sides to be the same, so wanted to make sure she would do this exactly the way I meant it, cause I was afraid language barrier, so as I was explaining to her, we went through this process together right when I came, she could have said no, I am busy or make excuses, or fake as if she understood etc., but that is how I know a good worker is, when she dedicates herself to her client and does her best, no matter what, that is an excellent service. The price was great for me, 40 dollar and I paid even some more just for her good service and doing her job well. This was my first time here and I took a risk to give my expensive fabric and it paid off very well. She also ironed them, which I liked. Also we found common interest to talk, as Asian food, as she just noticed I bought Asian cookbook. :) For me it's always fun with Asians, no matter language barrier but we do understand by hands and mimics. :) If you have any language issues with her, write or draw it on paper, it helps. :) Now I don't know if this would be as good for you as for me, but worked for me well, and would take again there if anything else comes out. read more
