JJ's was the first Yelp recommendation that I've used after moving back to the Bay Area from overseas. We needed our couch cushions mended before we moved into our new home and I needed a pair of jeans hemmed. In the past, I've had some really bad luck having my jeans taken up. These were an expensive pair given to me by a friend so I really wanted them done well. When I picked up the jeans a week later, which I think is fair for a place obviously so good, I was really happy. They looked fantastic done with the "original seam". The couch cushions were beautiful as well. The only hiccup was that when I was looking over the biggest piece, I noticed that one hole hadn't been stitched up that we had marked with a safety pin. It was easy to miss as it was such a big piece of material and when I mentioned it, they were obviously embarrassed and fixed it on the spot even though another customer was there. It only took five minutes and I was able to take everything home with a smile on my face. They are also open on Saturdays which is fantastic. Bring cash as most of the other reviews suggest! Overall, a great experience and I will definitely take all my alterations back to JJ's. read more

Whenever I get a nice pair of jeans I try to have them hemmed at a well known referred alterations place. Based on the good reviews given on yelp I decided to try this place and was disappointed. I chose to get an original hem on my super long Madewell jeans and was shocked to be charged $18 bucks! Also, they didn't bother to ask by what date I needed them by and told me that they would be ready in a week. I don't know about everyone else, but for $18 bucks I would expect them to be done quicker. I haven't gotten the jeans back yet, so I can't say anything about the workmanship, but for the prices they charge, I will not be returning. I am pretty sure there are other places that charge less for original hem that will have the same results. Also, they accept credit cards but the guy that took my payment was complaining about how they get charged every time someone uses their card so he insisted that I pay cash. Annoying! Update: After receiving and inspecting the jeans I was very disappointed because I could see the stitching of where the original hem was connected, which is not what I wanted. I have gotten previous jeans done in original hem at an alterations place in NYC and they did it correctly, so I know it can be done. It's very unfortunate that I paid so much for them to ruin my jeans. Never again. read more

So John sold this business a while back and now this place is under new owners. They still do a decent job, but the customer service isn't quite the level that John provided. The women seem to always be stressed out and very busy. I asked about getting some work done on an unique garment and the short version is that I left and went somewhere else to get the job done. She just didn't seem to have any interest in tackling my job. That's fine by me. I'd rather find somebody else anyway. read more

Usually I'm a lurker on yelp as opposed to reviewer. I know I know, it's people like me, apathetic voters and what not, that ruin the country. Anyway, today I went to JJ Alterations and was so pleased that I just had to review for the first time in a while. JJ is seriously such a cool guy. He's a little old, not quite elderly, but getting there, but he's old in that wizened, awesome kind of way. He had trouble finding my pants from the racks full of clothing and to see him flip through each hanger so calmly was so refreshing. Usually I run out of patience when these types of things happen because the employees are no doubt frazzeledly flipping manically through all the clothing on all the racks and looking around, but JJ was just so calm and watching him was a nice reminder that flipping through stuff crazily is not as effective as just taking one's time to focus to find something. He eventually found them, and there they were, my pants all perfectly hemmed. As a quick backstory, I had brought these same pair of pants in before to get hemmed to a 32.5" inseam. That was wishful thinking on my part, just like how sometimes people buy a size slightly too small thinking that the clothing will stretch a little with time and then it'll be perfect when really, it's just too small. I wish my legs were 32.5" long. SIGH. So I brought them back to JJ to ask for a 31.5" inseam instead, and I knew it was my fault so I was definitely ready to pay for a re-hemming. Guess what! JJ did it for free! I tried to insist on at least paying half his usual charge for a hem since it was my fault to begin with, but no, he just sent me away with his usual nice, calm smile. Definitely come to JJ. He's understanding and will listen to what you want done for your clothes. read more

It's been almost four years, and I still go to JJ and JJ only! In fact, I just went there today! I don't even live in the Bay Area anymore. I work and live in Asia, but I come home every 4-6 months to visit family and friends. Every time, I would buy new jeans, and I would drop them off with John-the-awesome-tailor. JJ Alterations WORKS MIRACLES -- A rare business owner that operates with great skills and a kind heart! My aging mother is suffering from early stages of Dementia and is incredibly attached to her black wool pants. The pockets were so worn from her carrying her valuables that they were literally shredded. I took the pants to three places to repair the pockets -- no one would do it -- too much work. Caroline hesitated as well, but when she heard my story she didn't think twice. She painstakingly removed the pockets, reinforced with more durable fabric, repaired the lining of pants (even when I didn't ask her to, but because she thought it was the right thing to do). I WAS BLOWN AWAY - these 30 year old pants looked new. These wool pants are irreplaceable to my Mother. I AM SO GRATEFUL. Thank you Caroline from the bottom of my heart. read more

I'm very satisfied at the first time but I paid over $20 to change my favorite running short's elastic waist. I thought they knew all about alteration. They transformed my split running short to loose waist booty short. Disappointed :( read more

I've gotten my jeans shortened twice here (for only $12) and I have been happy both times. He does a really good job saving the original hem: it's really smooth and barely noticeable.. much better than places I have gone in the past. JJ's does high quality work for a reasonable price. My experience there has been 5 stars all the way. They've done a perfect job on the many pants I've brought in to be shortened, and they did a flawless alteration on one of my husband's coats that we thought was way too complicated to be done well. CASH ONLY!!? I took some suit pants in to have them cuffed, fine. I go to pick them up. $14 No problem, whip out the old debit card and he says sorry cash only. CRAP! needs sign in the window or by the counter that says in BIG BOLD LETTERS CASH ONLY!! Went to the liquor store next door. ATM $1.75 surcharge. Other than that Looks great! read more

So far, I'm completely happy and just dropped off another 5 items to JJs to get transformed and have another bag of items sitting in my car to bring in when I pick up my last drop off. I've had so many clothes in need of alterations sitting in my closet I finally had enough and went on to Yelp to see if I could find myself a tailor who could do more than just hem a pant leg. When I'm talking alterations, I'm talking about transforming a dress 2 sizes too big to something that fits and make it look like it's professionally done. JJs exceeded my expectations on all fronts with the 3 dresses I brought in - one item could have been adjusted a little for the placement of the elastic, but with a belt, it looks fine. All my ill fitting or almost fitting clothes purchased on sale (we're talking too good of a deal to pass up situations) now have new life! He and I talked about different ideas that could work and ultimately, I figured I had nothing to lose. Either I let JJs work his magic or the alternative is Goodwill's getting some nice designer donations... As far as time it took - I was in no hurry for my clothes since they've been in my closet for so long anyways, it was definitely ok to wait. I'm sure if you asked him to do a rush job, he'd do his best to accomodate. Also...their hours opened shows up incorrectly on Yelp - they're actually open until 6pm... read more

I've had jeans too long, shirt sleeves too big, suits too small, broken zippers, etc. John's able to do them all at the best price in town. He's always willing to stay extra late to make sure I'm able to pick up or drop off my apparel. If I'm not happy with an alteration, John will take it back and redo it till it's perfect. Carol helped us with 2 night gowns and one suit for our wedding day. Everything turned out to be perfect, I had SO many compliments wearing the night gowns that she altered. During the alteration process, she took us in without an appointment and she was flexible with our pick up time and date. I enjoyed EVERY time I see her and her great smile. My now husband's suit fitted him perfectly as well, and she gave him good advice on how to make the suit look great on the wedding day. Update: Ava C is correct - John has retired and the place is now run by a Chinese couple. I do not know what their skills are like as I was quoted a pretty stiff rate to hem a dress and pair of pants and ultimately decided to do it myself. But they seem like nice people so I will keep my current rating until I am able to assess their services for myself. read more

As advertised, John is the man. Very friendly and accommodating. The man has a great skill set and lots of experience so he knows what he is doing. Had some shirts altered perfectly, did a slim down and sleeve reduction on some nice shirts. Will go to this Master of Linens for all future alterations. read more

This is my go to place for all my alterations, which tends to be numerous since I am tall and nothing seems to be long enough without the help of a tailor. I went to JJ's on a Monday (holiday) and even though he was closed, he was able to meet with me and look at the khakis and pair of jeans I wanted to hem. Fast forward one week and I pick them up. I highly recommend this place. John, the owner and tailor, is very patient, knowledgeable, and talented. I have been here 3 times and have consistently left very satisfied. My last trip required alterations to 4 new suits. He took up the sleeves, nipped tuck the sides of the jacket, and worked on the right arm hole area. The jackets came out looking really good and fit much better. The pants just needed cuffs and they turned out well. He did all 4 suits for me over the course of 4 days and even opened early for me to pick up on the way to the airport. This place is great! I've had the hem of my husband's designer jeans shortened here (matched the original hem perfectly!), the hem of a pair of my slacks shortened, and the lining of a vintage jacket replaced as well as a seam fixed. They do great work, and have a focus on doing the job right. I came in with my slacks but forgot to bring the right pair of shoes (for length measurement) and he wouldn't let me guess on the length -- he sent me home to bring back the shoes. I appreciate this attention to detail, their quality of service, and their professional and courteous staff. It's also a great location -- I always find street parking within a block or less. read more

I have brought jeans to be hemmed, shirts and pants to be altered and have been satisfied every time. The lady here always makes sure I'm happy with the final product. It definitely helps to speak mandarin or Cantonese. I have also found that I get the best results if I bring a sample (for fit and sizing) for her to copy. Be warned that this place isn't cheap, but having gone to some other tailors and been disappointed, I personally feel the price is worth it. read more

I didn't know John had retired. I went in to get the bottoms of my pants hemmed for my suit. The lady, who is running the place now, didn't measure correctly and as a result left too much fabric on the pants. When I told her that the pants were still too long she tried to convince me that it looks better than what I wanted. Instead of arguing, I just paid her and left. Very disappointed with the work done. Very sweet lady but i think she may be a bit overwhelmed. Definitely going to another place from now on. read more

This place is great. I've never gotten anything tailored before, but my bridesmaid dress for a wedding I'm going to be in was way too big. I called David's Bridal (where I got the dress from) and they said it would take 5 weeks to complete alterations. Well I only had three and was starting to panic thinking everyone would take that long, but I called JJ and he said that he could do it in three no problem. He even had it done a little earlier than expected. Makes me wonder why DB needs two extra weeks to do the same thing. Quality was AMAZING. When I tried the dress on it was like he made it just for me. I couldn't even tell where he altered it, and there was some pretty delicate stitching needed to make it look right. This is the only place I go for alterations. I have taken several pairs of work pants and jeans and a dress here to be altered. My husband has also had a suit altered here as well. Every time the results are great and the prices are just right. Parking and hours are convenient. read more

I found this place on Yelp, and saw some good reviews so I decided to try it - I didn't have much time and needed a bridesmaid dress shortened pretty quickly. I was worried about how it would turn out because of the layers and the thin fabric, but it turned out great - you couldn't even tell it had been shortened. I was a little nervous when I tried it on and he was so quick to mark it up for the new length, but, it was perfect. I'll definitely return when I have other things that need to be altered...only downside is that you need to bring cash. read more
