We decided to give John a try after reading all these raving reviews about him. We have been so amazed with his work. Anyway... John has fixed ginormous holes (in our sweaters) so well that I am unable to find where these holes originally were! He's hemmed our dress pants and jeans and they come back fitting and looking great. He's even altered my husband's suit and again, it was perfection. He is very meticulous across the board - from taking measurements to the detailed stitching. His turnaround time is a bit longer because he is really busy (yes, Yelp has had a very strong influence!). I believe a week is standard now. He and his wife have been in the area for over 20 years and they are really friendly people. This place is a rip off. I was charged 35 dollars just to shorten 2 pants...15 dollars a pair. The OTHER 5 dollars was because she complained she had a lot of work and she was busy because I told her I needed them in 2 days for work. I literally brought them to her the first day they were given to me so I couldn't have brought them sooner and for something as simple as shortening length to pants I'm sure is very easy and quick for her to do now. BUT what really pissed me off is when I went back to pick them up and I tried them on..I noticed one of the zippers to the pants was BROKEN and I showed her and she claimed she didn't do it when both pants were in perfect condition when I brought them into her. She acted suspicious and gave me a bit of an attitude when I told her they weren't like this when I brought them in. I asked if she can fix it she said for 20 dollars mo! I'm thinking "What the hell she wants to keep charging me extra and extra and none of it is my fault!" I'm sorry but kinda typical for Asian no offense. I paid the 35 and left! Caroline took me (without an appointment) when I had an urgent need to get alterations done to a BM dress because my original seamstress didn't pull through. So, definite brownie points for that. She did a good job, and with a smile... the only issue I had was that the alteration job ended up costing more than I had expected (almost half the price of the actual dress)... when I asked her why it was priced so high, she said she had actually given me a good deal because the alteration job required more than just shortening the length of the dress. I sort of wish she had laid that out from the get go so that my expectations were aligned with the outcome. I just wanted a simple shortening job, and I felt that she took it the more difficult route without confirming anything with me. With all her experience, I'm sure she had made an assessment from the start, which I felt she could have done a much better job at relaying. Anyway, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and update with an added star if I find that her prices are more reasonable the next time around.. but I likely won't return unless it's another emergency. read more

Wow, when I first started going to John, there were maybe 5 reviews on Yelp about him. Now, there are a slew! Yes. He's amazing. Everything all the good Yelp reviewers are saying is true. We bring our pants, our designer jeans, our shirts, our jackets, everything that needs fixing there... And everything always come back great. He even altered my niece's wedding gown for much less than what a "bridal seamstress" charges, and it turned out really well too. Granted, he didn't know what a bustle is at first (so don't ask him if an over bustle will look better or an under bustle... just bring someone who knows how to explain what you want well) but when it's all said and done it was perfect. read more

Came in with a bridesmaids gown that had taken 5 months to ship, leaving hardly any time for alterations, right at Christmas time. I made an appointment and she had me try the dress on, we took our time with the details, she delivered on time and again had me try on the dress to make sure everything was perfect. Very easy to work with and highly professional. To begin with, the dress barely zipped but had a huge skirt so she was able to use that material to add to the bodice. As a professional, she insisted on adding material to each side of the dress which I thought was strange but it was absolutely the right method as another bridesmaid added to only one side and her dress was wonky (not done at JJ). Living close by, I see that she stays late in the shop and is almost always at work so please pay what she asks and don't try to haggle!! I would definitely return when i have an occasion to turn the bridesmaids dress into an evening gown :) read more

I've been going to JJ's for a very long time. He is very professional and excellent at what he does. I've taken many dresses, pants, and shirts to get altered and he has always pulled through. There have been some cases where my pants needed more altering and he was more than happy to get it done right away. Overall, he's efficient, fair, and professional. I started bringing my premium denim here a month or so ago as it is closer to my office than my old place and easy to run in and out at lunchtime. John is very friendly, has reasonable rates and is pretty quick. This is a real tailor - not a dry cleaners who does some alterations. I have brought about 6 pairs of jeans here for original hems and he does a great job on all of them. Plus he is very easy to get to and plenty of parking on street. read more

Coming from a below average height male in the US, I think I know a thing or two about alterations / tailors. I've yet to see the finished product, but I have to say their prices are expensive. Really? $15 for non-original hem for a pair of cotton pants. $20 for a light jacket where it's just hemming? Super over-priced and it's not even fast. He didn't even ask when I want it by, he had already put down when it will be ready. Most places would ask, and try to work around it (if not charge more if you want it tomorrow). I'm sure the guy is really nice. I just think the prices would be better, particularly since he charges even more than SF tailors! read more

Ive been going to JJ alterations for about 2 years now. Thus far Ive had many, many jeans tailored at the hems (typically keeping the original pre-distressed hems). He (John) has always done a great job on these and when I changed my mind about the length (going from a boot heel to a lower height heel) he did them for free even though I didnt ask and offered to pay. I have also had a few shirts taken in via darts in the back. He has done a great job here as well. Lastly, I have had two over sized wool coats reduced at the body and they turned out great. Yes, John can take a week to finish the job, but I really don't have an issue with that. And yes he does charge $14 for original hems but that doesn't seem outrageous to me. "Nice" jeans are $ so its worth a few bucks right? John is extremely nice and honest. I highly recommend his work. P.S. Cash only! read more

Thanks to all you YELPERS, I found a good place to get alterations. I had seven pairs of pants that needed to be altered. He charges around $10 (fold over cut) and $12 (original cut) for each pair. He was very friendly and the place was very clean. It took about 1 1/2 - 2 weeks to get them back (I wasn't really in a rush either). They all turned out pretty nice. NOTE: HE ONLY TAKES CASH!!!!, NO CREDIT CARDS!!!!! Street parking is not to hard to find. read more

I bought an LL bean puffy down hooded jacket with downtek. 850 fill power down. It's a really nice jacket but it had cheesy elastic cuffs. I dropped by JJ Alterations based on the reviews here on Yelp, and I wasn't disappointed. John was polite, prompt, and professional (oooh: an alliteration!). He's previously worked for Men's Wearhouse and won tailor of the year there (and has the plaque to prove it). I took some button-down shirts for him to take in because shirts off-the-rack down to make me look like a sailboat because they have a lot of extra material. He added "vents" (I'm not a clothes person, so I didn't know that word until he wrote it down on my bill) and also shortened one of the sleeves to fit better. He took a week to do the work, and I'm much happier with the shirts. Not sure he takes credit cards (no credit card stickers anywhere) but I happened to have cash on hand so no big deal. Anyway, highly recommended -- just like all the other Yelp'ers here. read more

I've had jeans/slacks hemmed before at other places, and they came back either too long or too short. And the original hems that were done on my designer jeans looked like crap from the inside. So they came back too long, but now I couldn't roll them up cuz of the ugliness going on underneath. I paid over $25 for each pair. After those experiences, I decided to just buy really high heels, fold my jeans up, or tape up the hem in my dress slacks. Which works, but you're screwed when it's raining. So, I brought 3 pairs of jeans to John at JJ Alterations last week cuz I decided it's time my clothes fit properly. This was a test run. 2 needed to be hemmed shorter to wear with flats, the other to wear with 3 inch heels. They all came back perfect. PERFECT. Hems look exactly like the original, actually, better because I all three had been ripped up from dragging on the ground. And it was about half of what I paid in the past. I'm pretty excited, I feel like I'm about to get a brand new wardrobe. Cuz John's about to get real familiar with my clothes. I thought his prices were crazy slick deals relative to my past experiences. But even if he charged me what the others did, I'd still go back to him. Cuz paying a fraction of what you pay for designer jeans, a jacket, a suit, or a dress to tailor them to fit you right and look good is so worth it. He accepts cash/check, there's easy no-meter street parking, and I thought his turnaround time was reasonable (10 days) since I wasn't in a rush. Caroline saved my senior prom! With just a few days notice, smack dab in the midst of crazy prom season, she fixed my dress from a HUGE size 8/9 to a size 3. I ordered my dress from China, and of course it got lost in the mail and finally showed up on my doorstep 4 days before prom. Freaking out, I called her and took it down that same evening, and had it ready for me by prom. I was surprised that she even took my dress on such late notice because she must've had AT LEAST 50 prom dresses to fix in just a few days!! Love that she has you come in before she finalizes the hems and zippers so that you can try it on again and see if the clothing is to your liking. She charged me $75; I don't know much about alteration services prices, but I was happy with that because I gave her 4 days notice and she brought my prom dress down 4 sizes. The dress was altered quickly, ready when promised, and came out amazing. The price was extremely reasonable and since I was forewarned that I was cash only, I was prepared. After the great work on my wedding dress, I brought a few pairs of pants to be shortened (I got my dad's short legs rather than my mom's modelesque ones...) and the original hem came out perfect. I've been meaning to write a review for JJ for awhile now - apologies! I was referred here by my cousin, and I take family recommendations seriously. Fortunately, JJ did not disappoint. I brought him my four pairs of jeans to be hemmed, and also.. having the waistband taken in and he did them all for me within a week - original hem too! The price overall was wonderful, about $60 or so. That's amazing, seriously...how is that even possible? Anyways, I was even more impressed by JJ's professionalism and just overall kindness. He was very honest with what he could and could not do, and he just knew exactly what to do with the jeans. The only reason I don't give one more star is that one of my jeans came back a little too short.. but just barely so it's fine..he did such a great job overall that the next time I make the trek down to San Mateo, I will bring a lot more clothes for him to adjust. JJ Alterations is the only place I go for any alterations. Not only is John extremely kind, but he does excellent work! I've had numerous pants altered here and John will make recommendations on length or whether or not the pants will benefit from original hem - even if it will cost me less. John also made alterations on a bridesmaid dress for me, which were extensive (taking in the sides, shortening the train, skirt, and liner) and beautifully done. When I told her what I wanted she argued with me! The only reason I didn't walk out is because I needed the jeans alternated. I took the jeans to Le's alterations in Sunnyvale and he did me up right. It was Thursday afternoon and I had some Rock and Republic jeans I needed to get hemmed before Friday night. And of course I wanted the original hem. Anyway, I work near JJ and decided to go here based on other Yelpers. I called to make sure he was able to get the jeans done in a day. On the phone he asked when I can come over. I didn't confirm whether or not he could do it, I just drove over. To my surprise, the original hem rush job cost the same if it was not rushed... $12! A steal if you ask me. The next day, I came back, tried it on and it was perfect! The original 1/4" hem was intact and the new "hem" was invisible. I will definitely come back here again. read more

JJ is amazing! He is such a friendly man and his talent is remarkable. I went all over Atlanta to all the wedding boutiques but just couldn't find the perfect wedding dress. My mom had a crazy idea to get it custom made. My mom sews herself so she knows quality when she see's it. His men suites were beautiful so I took a whim , had him take my measurements, showed him pictures of different dress I'd liked and he make me my custom wedding dress! I couldn't be happier! And he did it in a month. I asked for samples of silk and he orders everything from Italy- the fabric and sewing guality is just beautiful! His lovely daughter was amazing and was there to help with the communication barrier so that was extremely helpful! I am having him make my fiancé tuxedo for the wedding too. So me being my normal last minute self, had a dress I needed a bunch of seams repaired on and needed it in about a day. I bought the dress with the flaws thinking it would be no big deal to fix flash forward to me driving around to a bunch of cleaners to see if someone could fix it fast. The first place I went to quoted me $12 for just one of the many repairs needed!! and that it would take at least 2 weeks. I grabbed my dress and goggled the next alterations place and found JJs. I ran in and the kind man behind the counter looked the dress over and asked when I needed it I told him the next day but he said he could have it back to me by 5 the same day! and to top it off he only charged me $20 total. I was shop around stop by JJ Alternations look for tailor who able to fix my real leather jacket. I just need to cut short the sleeve which is 3 inches longer. Spoke to the tailor her self. But at the end I have to shop around again, because she said the leather jacket I have is very heavy and durable, hard to fix it, so she quote me $100 per jacket, and she also told me it'll get done within 1-2 months. Well thats not work at all for me. And finally I found another tailor that work for me is I&T's Tailoring located in San Mateo Downtown, spoke with the owner and he fix it for me. The price quote was $75/jacket all done within 3 days. If you have high quality and durable of leather jacket need to fix, JJ Alternations is not a right place to bring, thats all I could say. read more

I had bought a very expensive "Barn" coat, the fit was good however, not great. The sleeves were just slightly shifted, if you know what I mean. The coat was usually $2300.00 but, I got a steal at just a shade over $700.00 so, could not pass it up! Anyway, I took it to JJ and OMG Alex did an unbelievable job! He actually, took the sleeves off and then re-sewed them back on and the coat looks Fantastic! I just returned and bought several Etro pieces that need to be hemmed and would not even consider going any place else! I have had three different bridesmaid dresses this year that I've needed quite a bit of altering work done on. I have been impressed EVERY single time I have taken my garments in. The owner has had great suggestions of how to fix every problem that came up in regards to the dresses. The price may seem high compared to others, but I consider it well worth it because the fit is done exactly to your body type. She works late hours to make sure that the jobs are completed on time, and she will be honest with you if she is running a little behind. I enjoy that she keeps me informed of her progress. Her calls come a little late for my preference sometimes, but that just lets me know she's doing her best to get the job done! read more

I found this place on yelp and have gotten a few pairs of pants hemmed already. The good: the location is convenient and there is plenty of free parking. The shop is fairly large and clean. The owner is a nice guy and his prices are fair. His turnaround time can be as fast as same day, but usually two to three days. The so-so: he seems to go long with his fittings, which might be my fault, but better safe than sorry I guess. He always seems to be in a rush, even though I look behind me and there is nobody else in the store...just hoping he's a bit more relaxed with the sewing machine. And are these really "original hems"? I'm not sure, but the way I got them done here is not what I'm used to, plus they were oh so slightly crooked. read more
