Just stopping by this popular Taiwanese bakery this morning to pick up a cake for my co-worker's farewell party. They are open very early every morning & are well prepared with freshly baked breakfast and luncheon goods to choose from. I've picked out a nice black Forrest cake with amazing cherries on top ! Went in at 10:10 AM on Wednesday morning and the cashier was super rude. We asked her if they still had a breakfast item and she said there's only one left so I said "Oh, last time they said breakfast items were sold until 11?" And she replied soooo rudely and bluntly with a big attitude "well, we sold out!" I had the opportunity to come here to grab some breakfast on a weekend. Let me tell you this: make sure to come early because there will be long lines! The bakery inside has lots of pastries, bread, and other baked goods for you to choose from. If you want to order some food to go, there is a menu at the cash register for you to pick up along with a pencil. You basically write in your order, wait in line, and present it to the cash register and they'll prepare the food as you wait. I ordered the hot soy milk, supreme rice ball (fan tuan) with egg and chinese sausage along with pan-fried daikon rice cake with egg. I highly recommend all of these items! The hot soy milk had just enough sweetness to get you through the morning. The rice ball is huge so it's great for sharing. The chinese sausage and egg was a great addition. I saw many good reviews on this place so I thought I give it a try. I ordered some cream puffs and egg tarts through Grubhub, trying to save some time. However, I ended up waiting for 15 minutes since the lady in charge was busy trying help someone customizing a birthday cake. The line was very long for the other cashier so there was no way that they can help speed things up. There were only three people working so they were definitely short staffed! It's possible that this review is inflated because I come from the Bay Area, where bakeries like this are pretty much nonexistent (except for the recent 85C that opened in Newark). The JJ in SF is a sorry sight and it's hard to believe that that location is even remotely related to this one. The excitement begins when you first step into the store and are greeted by a dizzying array of impressive cakes on display behind glass cases. Taro, mango, fruit tart, chocolate, etc. Taste the rainbow, indeed. We had no occasion, unfortunately, for an entire cake, so we opted for their mini green tea mochi-cake desserts instead. On the outside is an unassuming thin fluffy layer of white mochi skin...but inside are globs of green tea flavored cream, patches of cake, mousse, and sweetened red beans. So freaking ridiculous. The only other time I had a mochi this divine was in Japan. Except that mochi was, in good Japanese fashion, tinier and not as sweet. JJ's mochi represents American well: unapologetically obese. The Oscar bread is also a favorite of mine, with its thick delicious exterior that's pregnant with cream cheese and cranberries. It's very similar to the Rose bread at 85C but without any physical trace of rose or black sesame seeds. The taro breads here are also crazy: fluffy and filled with chunky taro paste! We also tried their homemade mochi which has no preservatives and it was sooo delicious. Oh and also this small yet dense swiss roll made of cream, cake, and orange marmalade. Best swiss roll of my life. Beyond sweets, they also have savory snacks like steamed dumplings and rice rolls with pickled vegetables and pork sung inside (fan tuan). We ordered a simple fan tuan (with no sausage or egg or anything fancy) for lunch and it was SO good. The rice was perfect, the ratio of filling to rice was perfect, everything was perfect. It was as good as the ones I've tried at Taiwanese markets. In summary: I loved literally everything we bought and tried. While in the area, I decided to give JJ bakery a visit last week. It's situated inside a small shopping center on Baldwin Ave. across from Din Tai Fung Dumpling House. It has quite a resemblance to 85 Degrees, but selections and offering were slightly different. In addition to traditional Taiwainese sweet buns and pastries, JJ also offered bento lunch boxes, sandwiches and more savory baked items. I was delighted to discover they had 3 types of taro buns on-hand - taro berry custard, marble cloud taro and taro buttermilk bun puff. All were equally yummy, but buttermilk and marble cloud were better suited for me. Not overly sweet, buttery and fillings weren't too overwhelming. Their cream puffs, macarons and mochi were a nice surprise find as well. The mango mochi was huge and filled with mango flavored whipped cream. It was like chewing a soft gewy, mango flavored marshmallow and was quite yummy. The cream puff was delicious. For 95 cents a piece, it can be quite dangerous to my figure and had to scale back to just one. Other fabulous treats to land on my tray included Hokkaido butter toast, maple fig and Oscar bun. All were amazingly good and reasonably cheap $1-$4. Accumulating mass quantities of pastries on my tray, I couldn't help smile as my fixation for sweet delicious buns and bread was once again appeased. There is a dead fruit fly in my drink!!! I used to come here pretty often before before the pandemic. Today I went and get a cold soy milk which I don't usually get. It has this burnt taste and I felt like I bit into some weird stuff but I thought it could be the soy bean so I just spit it out and tried to not think about it. The burnt taste is so gross that I decided to just dump it down the drain and guess what.... A DEAD FRUIT FLY BODY APPEARS!!! And I finally got to taste JJ's fan tuans. My favorite so far! Better than Si Hai and so much better than Huge Tree (for millions of reasons). I really like that the you tiao is still crispy when I get to it, and the pork sung and picked daikon combined with the sticky rice makes for a super fabulous combination. Sometimes the fan tuan itself has an odd smell, but doesn't really affect the taste. My one complaint is that there is a lot of rice packed into the roll, and overwhelms all the other ingredients. If only they could cut the rice ratio down just a little. Their pork sung puffed pastry bread is also a favorite of mine. I got to try it right when it came out of the oven, and the puffed pastry was incredibly flaky and melted in my mouth. Lots of pork sung as well. Have to say this one was better than Taipan bakery. The popular bread always run out fast but they always constantly restocking the bread as soon as possible. There is usually a line at check out but the line does move pretty fast. This place is also known for their wide dessert selections. They have sliced individual cakes, tiramisu, chocolate cake, mousse, and even creative birthday cakes with different cake flavors already made for pick up. They also serve sandwiches, milk tea, soy bean milk, rice burrito, egg tart, and bento lunch box. The prices for the bento lunch box are very reasonable. They serve popular rice bentos boxes like pork chop rice, Taiwanese stick rice, mince pork rice, Taiwanese sausage over rice, fish rice, red pork belly rice, etc. The food portion is decent, really good, and authentically made as a Taiwanese dish. My family has been coming to JJ Bakery for decades and are usually satisfied with their bread and pastries. 3 weeks ago, my mother brought a bag of croissants and there was a bug inside. Since we are long-time customers (and were busy at the time), we've decided to give them a chance and not mention it on Yelp. Today, we bought a chocolate cake roll that we've always bought. I like the JJ BAKERY chain, probably even better than the "85 Degrees" in terms of both selection and price as well as the all important, food taste and quality. Where 85 C is currently the hot spot to go to and is a bit crowded, JJ Bakery still has its crowds and loyal regular fan following, but is also much more manageable to get in and out of generally speaking. I like nearly everything they have here. They have a nice selection of warm / hot baked goods as well as cool / cold deserts including cakes. They have great cookies and the checkerboard cake is d'lish! The have a Croissant Donut with Custard which is essentially what's similar to the trademarked New York fashion food, The Cronut. Where locals, even in the So Cal LA area charge anywhere from $4 to $6 for this, but make it more of a unique delicacy with special flavors, here at JJ's it's only $1.60 but is very basic (sort of bland and kinda oily, similar in taste to those "Chinese Donuts" (youtiao / yàuhjagwái) served for breakfast with Jook / Congee / Porridge / Rice Soup). It's not close to what the Cronuts taste like, so don't use this as the barometer, nor get seduced by the low price. At face value it's okay for $1.60, but it's no Cro'nut by taste other than look and description. There's way more and better food items here 'tho. I got a bag of 8 items for $11. Most of the stuff are in the $1 to $2 range, so it's affordable fresh and tasty. During covid 19, I was thinking that I could grab a quick snack but when I walked in there was a very limited selection, good for almost closing but then I walked down into the store and found a swarm of flies just hanging out in the middle of the store, there was one cleaner dusting the cabinets not caring about the ten flies behind him. I've been coming here for years and I love their bread! Their bread is very affordable, delicious and never greasy. My favorites at JJ Bakery are the danish croissants, the coconut twist, the hot dog buns, the dinner rolls, and sometimes I'll get their French garlic bread. For pastries- the fruit tarts are a must try! I also enjoy their egg tarts and to go mini pastries like the tiramisu cup and cappuccino mousse. There's only two reasons why I am not giving this location 5 stars. The first reason is that by 2:00 PM, a lot of their popular breads are gone. In comparison to other Asian bakeries, they bake throughout the day until closing. The second reason why I'm taking off a star is because they have messed up on a few of my cake orders and they forget to give me birthday/holiday decorations as well as candles. But the cakes are definitely worth it- they're inexpensive in comparison to other bakeries and taste amazing.They're in the $30 range.
