This is one of my favorite cake and pastry store. Always get their Japanese chiffon cream filling cake. And like the others described: the cake here is not too sweet which is a good way to keep healthier. Basically ordered cakes for all events. I really love their pastries! My favorite is seaweed roll! I always get at least 2 when I came by. I was craving for boba, so I just stopped by and get my usual favorite, seaweed roll, and an oolong boba fresh milk tea. The seaweed roll was amazing like usual! I ordered my drink with no ice, and the lady who prepared my drink put ice in it and I approached her by telling her that I do not want ice in my drink. The cashier said that she forgot to put "no ice" in the order. The lady who prepared my drink looked at me and said "you didn't say that you don't want ice." I was shocked and think "didn't the cashier tell you that she forgot to put that in the order? How could you blame me for that?" Speaking about the drink. It was watery and tasteless. **PLEASE CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS BEFORE LEAVING, OVERCHARGED AGAIN** I know most people don't bother to check, cause you honestly don't notice when a bread/ few extra dollars are added, but please be aware. This is my third consecutive visit, where I was charged for bread I didn't purchase. I have been a customer for countless years and I will continue to come back because I love their bread and pastries, but I wish the cashiers were more honest to paying customers. This time, I was charged for a garlic bread, which I never even brought up to the register. When I notified the cashier, she then looked at me like she didn't know what I was talking about, and dug out my whole bag, even though I only purchased 3 pieces of bread, to make sure I wasn't lying. Sugar level was perfect & not too sweet (I typically do not like high sugars in my foods). Visited around 11 afternoon & pastries were coming out nice & warm from the oven. I didn't check the receipt but hopefully did not get overcharged. Purchased Coffee Walnut sliced breads ($4.50), cheese stuffed puff bread ($2ish), green onion/dried pork buns ($3ish?), and sticky rice w/ sausage , fried chinese donut, & dried pork stuffing) ($4.50)--$24 total/4 items. -All breads wrapped in clear plastic bags. Trays & tongs located beside the front entrance. -Hand sanitizer on site. -Credit cards & cash accepted (even Amex) -Currently located beside Sallys Beauty Salon & TJ MAxx -You'll find fresh birthday cakes & desserts on display at the front, shelves of various breads, refrigerators filled w/ cold desserts (cheese cake etc.) & cold drinks (herbal, soy, milk tea, mung bean, etc.), bento boxes with freshly cooked hot meals served w/ rice (grilled salmon, grounded meats, pork slices, etc.) (about $10) Overall unique finds. Great Taiwanese bakery! Pricing is reasonable, but some items can be a little pricier. I like the breakfast items like the fan tuan, turnip cake, and curry pie. I tried their salty soy milk, but it didn't taste like what I am used to at some of the other breakfast places. My husband's favorite is a tamale though! It's close to what his grandma used to make. Best re-steamed for the right texture. The bread items are good too! I like the pineapple bun, taro bun and red bean with mochi bun. The almond croissant is just a touch sweet for me. Overall, I really enjoyed the cakes for my family gatherings. It's not too sweet and always tastes fresh to me. I've been coming here ever since they opened. Even with all the competition that sprung up later, JJ is still my preferred bakery for Asian breads. I've sampled almost their entire offerings and my favorite has got to be the Taiwanese pork burger. It has a pork patty sandwiched by lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and a fried egg inside a soft bun. Their various white or wheat toasts are generally good as well. The only thing I haven't tried is their Taiwanese breakfast menu. read more

From the perspective of food quality only, they are top notch and comparable to (or should I say even exceed) 85 Degrees' quality. However, their service quality is nowhere close. We made a phone call during the 10% discount period to pre-order a Mother's Day Coconut Taro Cloud cake to be picked up in the morning of the day before Mother's Day. As expected, the lady on the phone wrote down my name, the kind of cake that I pre-ordered and my phone number. I asked whether I had to pay on the phone for the pre-order and she said I would pay when I would pick up the cake. Then when it was the day and time to pick up the cake, I was asked by the staff for the "order number", which I was not given when I called to pre-order. Then the staff asked me whether I paid, and I told her whoever wrote down the order for me on the phone said I would pay when I would pick up instead of instantly. In return, the staff asked me my phone number when I called to make the pre-order, and I gave accordingly. As a result, she checked and told me they still didn't have my pre-order. Thankfully, there was a Coconut Taro Cloud cake in display which they were OK to let me buy it. However, due to "no pre-order", I had to pay in full instead of getting the 10% discount even though I was able to show my iPhone call record. What's more ridiculous is that, on the same day when we were having dinner in the evening, they kept calling me and left me voice message that they were still "waiting for me to pick up my pre-order". Finally, I decided to call them back and when the lady on the other side of the phone told me I "haven't picked up my pre-ordered cake" yet, I had to tell her that I already picked up mine and had to pay in full. She checked with other staffs on her end instantly and confirmed that I had paid for my cake in full rate. She apologized but the damage has already been done!!! My advice to JJ (not just this location but every location in general): If they have plans to expand their business base, they'd better hire people with much better fluency in English. Those who don't know or are not fluent in Mandarin will have a very hard time communicating with them at least on the phone if not in-store. Besides, they need to make sure every staff knows and executes the same process and procedures for phone orders, because obviously in my case somebody (the pre-order staff on the phone) had a disconnect and missed some steps in the call (e.g., giving me the "order number"). Until they can correct these issues and provide better service quality, their business areas can only be restricted to the Pan-Asian (or particularly Mandarin-speaking) communities only instead of the business success currently enjoyed by 85 Degrees. read more

Along with its famous cakes, JJ is known for their Taiwanese stuffed sticky rice roll aka Fan Tuan. Basically, you can get your Taiwanese breakfast craving satisfied here. Opens early in the morning, for all those who need to travel far to work, JJ has quick and ready to go breakfast for you, I normally get a hot soy milk drink, a You Tiao ( fried dough) and a Fan Tuan for my to go breakfast. As we go on a trip, we would stop by here first to stock up on breakfast with the normal Taiwanese breakfast items and some pastries for the road. Yesterday we got ourselves a Fan Tuan with Taiwanese sausage and YouTiao, Shaobing ( Taiwanese pancake with egg), and some pastries including a coconut turnover and a almond danish for a trip to the Central California. They were all delicious and yummy. We had a good time eating them on our trip. Besides Taiwanese breakfast, JJ has decent birthday and wedding cakes. It's been a while since my last review is this place. I have to say, that the strawberry mochi has remained great. I felt the cake has gotten a bit smaller, and. I love JJ bakery's baked good. All super delicious and yummy. Cake is great, breakfast food is great too. So why two stars? Because most time their shelves is nearly all empty or only got a few types only. I went there mostly in the morning around 9am. They barely have anything at all. I understand maybe most sold out in an hour? But isn't it their responsibility to make sure that the supply line keep flowing?!?! I now go to the JJ bakery in temple city. The different is night and day. The Temple city is bigger, way more types to choose from. (Mind you, they got a LOT of customer as well, but their kitchen keep pushing new one our all the time). Went today and it still a very chineee place. It I got the fresh fruit mochi and it is so good but really not good for your blood sugar. The mochi is extremely soft and soft yummy. The cake and cream is to die for. The fresh fruit just made it that much better. I like the mango better than the strawberry one but then I don't like strawberries. Treat you pallet with the flavor. The ladies working here are so nice. I was really impressed by the variety of baked goods available however, will have to wait for next time as I stuffed my self with dumplings from Din Tai Fung which is just across the parking lot. I was longing for some boba tea so ordered the golden oolong tea with boba. Well, it was way too sweet for my tastes and had a strong flavor that my taste buds didn't care for, so maybe if you've never tasted this tea, perhaps ask if it's possible to have a sample. The good thing is they do brew all their own tea, so was told no powders are involved. The baked goods really fairly priced and the variety is incredible. I absolutely love the puff pastry & pork sung pastry. This particular location also has a lot more in the way of savory lunch boxes at reasonable prices. This JJ Bakery has been around for a really long time. I honestly haven't had a bad cake from there We've gotten the taro cake and fruit cake that has pudding inside and they were both good. I love going to different bakeries but I feel like JJ bakery is one of those places where you trust to have consistent taste and quality. Their dry pork bun is still one of the best around. It's not too sweet or too oily. Very balanced. I'm a sucker for bakeries. Because JJ Bakery is in the same plaza as Din Tai Fung, I invariably stop by JJ. Lately it seems like the selections are not as diverse and the shelves aren't full. Prices have gone up as well. The breads here are all individually wrapped, a common practice at Chinese bakeries nowadays. They do have trays to hold your bread selections but no tongs. Strange. The refrigerated case has cakes and pastries but nothing outstanding. They do sell 2 types of fan tuan (rice rolls), which I sometimes pick up when the craving strikes. Service here is on but not especially friendly. While I won't go out of my way to visit this bakery, it's nice to visit when in the area. read more

Egg tart kings, no contest! At least in southern California. Koi Palace up in Daly City has the most pastry-like tarts but the warm thick ones from JJ Bakery are in a class of their own. See pics. One thing I enjoy about the diversity of the region, and this is my eulogy for Jonathan Gold, the eminent LA Times food critic, food DOES bring us all closer together. Social psychology experiments show that reducing biases, especially implicit bias, can be performed by encounters with other groups outside one's own. In that regard Mr. Gold paved the way for ethnically diverse cuisine that does not require a reservation months in advance or a shirt and tie with dinner jacket. Thus, I have embarked on various food-oriented missions. One is to find the ultimate Cuban Sandwich, the other is the ultimate egg tart. For now, I only have to test the theory for consistency over a period of time. There are many Asian bakeries popping up. It seems like a good start-up business venture in a growing monied demographic. But what about taste? Integrity? Value? On all of those points I feel that this very small, compared to the 85 Degrees Bakery chain, store has it all and more. The first visit demonstrated that they're not cutting corners. The sponge cake has a lovely coconut oil undertone in lieu of butter like other companies. Back to that egg tart, the warmth and creaminess of the filling was outstanding! No air pockets or bubbles (see cross-section shot). The crust was marvelous too. Easily twice the thickness of everyone else but more flavors concentrated than any tarts I can recall recently. It's small in there, the parking lot is crowded but the quality of the food is worth it. Consider eating at the dumpling house in the same center first. For now, I'm salivating while thinking about the next time. RIP Jonathan Gold, your spirit and memory lives on. read more

Picked up a couple breads recently and they have all been just ok and a little pricey. Breads can run $3-$5 here now (crazy right??) - so I generally turn to 85 bakery now. JJ bakery has been a family favorite for Arcadia locals for almost 2 decades now. They've expanded to new locations and also to include Taiwanese breakfast options. But sadly, the current quality and limited selection of breads just don't live up to the price. Also, I reserved a 6" strawberry cake the other day but they actually reserved an 8" cake. So I had no choice but to pay the extra $$ for a larger cake even though there was only 4 people eating it... their cakes are yummy - the sponge cake they use is the best in the neighborhood but their cake designs definitely aren't the cutest. Paris Baguette, Tous les Jours, and 85 Bakery have the nicest cake decorating. Parking is always ample and free inside the plaza. There's also security guards that walk around so it's generally safe. There's also street parking nearby. read more

3.5 Stars Pros: 1. The baked goods are decent. I've had several items and they were good - above average. The BBQ pork bun has a very good meat-to-dough ratio. 2. I went in the morning and the BBQ pork buns weren't out yet, but I asked and they were just coming out of the oven so they went in the back and got them for me. 3. Parking is pretty easy (esp. ever since DTF closed). Cons: 1. The BBQ pork bun is a little too salty (and I'm someone who generally likes salt). 2. Stay at home equals carbs and comfort food. We have came to this location quite a few times before, but it was a first during Covid19 and we took advantage of their 20% off. Not sure if they actually gave us the discounts since we didn't get a receipt. I do appreciate they gave us gloves as we walked in, and the line to pay was marked for social distancing. We came around 10 am and there were many choices to choose from for fresh bread. I really enjoyed the matcha croissant and the seaweed roll with pork sung and egg. JJ Bakery has been a family favorite for the last 5-10 years! We love stopping by before a road trip to stock up on fresh buns and breakfast. I enjoy their Earl Grey croissant which reminds me of a sweet flavored croissant. My favorite breakfast item to get is their rice ball with sausage inside. On mornings, they have premade rice balls, buns, and radish cakes that can easily be grabbed. You can also order them to be freshly made in the kitchen. We also have gotten several cakes from JJ. Our favorite is the Chocolate Symphony which is a chocolate cake with an Oreo and blueberry filling. This time, we tried the Strawberry Creme Brûlée cake for my Grandma's birthday. The inside is a white cake with a layer of pudding and a layer of strawberries. Definitely a solid cake but the Chocolate Symphony cake is definitely the must-try! read more

JJ is one of my favorite soCal Asian bakeries of all time, if not the favorite. My family and I have come here for years. They are generous with their fillings, the overall taste is better than 85 degrees bakery in my opinion, and is more uniquely Taiwanese in some subtle ways. The quality of their baking is also very good in my opinion. The cakes are a bit pricey, sure, but they are honestly very good and I also like them better than the cakes at 85 and Paris Baguette - they are fluffy, not too sweet, and well-balanced. I also love their cookies, breads/pastries, etc - basically it's hard for me to choose every time I come here! Tip: the time of day that you come can matter. Too early or late in the day, and there will be less stock. Like any bakery! read more

Such a gem of a bakery that offers a variety of unique flavors and bread combos compared to other businesses! I LOVE bread so I might always be biased, but every single item I got was super soft and fluffy. I got their Black Sesame Mochi, Red Bean Mochi, and Earl Grey Croissant. Their Mochi bread is SO good and chewy - the Black Sesame was definitely a standout because the flavor came through strong! Earl Grey Croissant was a bit disappointing because it didn't taste like much, maybe a slight tea taste but that's about it. Nevertheless, I bought the breakfast fan-Tuan (sticky rice roll), but there was a part of the ingredients inside, yo-tiao (not sure how to translate that into English), that I liked which was a disappointment. I suggest that if any item was past 3hours old, don't sell it. I can tell from trying to chew on it.....MeThinksNot. I had to throw most of that piece of yo-tiao away. Too bad bc that's my favorite part of the fan-Tuan to chew on.....yet failed. Can't anywhere get these authentic Taiwanese foods made right?! Can't honor the 2 extra stars even though they bake the egg tarts fresh....and the green tea tasted a bit funny but better than yesterday's completely failed trip to San Gabriel. This bakery was always Taiwanese to me but since Kee Wah was closed on Tues we came here. I noticed some Hong Kongese items and tried them. So impressed with Dan Tats and baos. Baos were fluffy and a seaweed roll was delish! The seaweed roll had ham, egg, pork floss wrapped around flatten bread and nori. This was a huge hit with the kids and good portion for $2.80. My SO loved the hot dog buns and even better than 85! We always enjoyed their cakes compared to the other chains. The chocolate cake tastes like chocolate and the fruit one is my fav although it's $48 now! Inflation! Fan Tuan was so yummy with Chinese sausage, egg and fried dough usually eaten with jook. It was super crunchy even wrapped around rice. Price has gone up but why not once in awhile. Definitely returning and happy our usual spot let us venture here! read more

I don't usually give 1 star ratings but this place really sucked. Especially the service. I had a horrible experience here in my first visit and I doubt I will be coming back here ever again. Shelves were almost empty, very pricey and not much selection. The cashier kept staring scornfully at me and my sisters and then while we were paying, she was throwing my sister's card and receipt on the counter instead of respectfully giving it back to us. Also, she kept talking in Chinese to the lady in front of us who clearly couldn't speak the language.
